Notes: Photo from Columbus, Ohio. Malone qualified 3rd with a 6.83/205 and defeated Norm Day (7.01/204 to 7.47/189) and Lee Zeinert (6.93 to 6.93/203) to meet Ken Veney in the final. Veney redlighted away a 6.75/207, giving Malone the win at only 7.07/196. Note misspelled car name. This was on purpose, but who knows why?

Notes: Mandoline was at Byron for the UDRA season opener in May. Twelve cars showed, and in the first round, all cars were racing the clock as only the four quickest times advanced to the semifinals. Surprisingly, Fred's 6.99 failed to advance. Fred won his first NHRA National event at the Springnationals in June. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 in the eight-car field with a 6.55/205.01. In the opening round, his 6.60/209.30 beat Vern Moats, and in the semifinals, a 6.67/208.81 beat Dick Bell and put him into the final against Frank Manzo. Frank was pretty tough to beat at this time, but Mandoline was up to the task, running 6.58/207.85 for the victory over Manzo's 6.70/206. On August 28, he also won the NHRA Division Three final held at Beech Bend. He had qualified second with a 6.66/209.30 behind Don Gerardot's 6.58/209. These two would both race their way into the final. In round one, Ronny Young broke, so Fred ran 6.69/208.81 to advance. In the semi-final, he ran 6.64/208.33 to defeat Dan Nimmo's 6.74/205. He then set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.50/212.00 to beat Gerardot's 6.81. Shortly after that, he went to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. His 6.50/213.77 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he was upset in the first round, where his 6.78/210.28 lost to Gary Henderson's 6.68/205. Bac-Man Heads.

Notes: Fred was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May. It was an eight-car field and his best of 6.62/206.51 failed (third alternate) to make the show. At the NHRA Sportsnationals, he qualified #5 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.51/218.12. A first-round 6.53/215.20 beat Carol Henson's 6.67/210, but his second round 6.61/217.39 lost to eventual winner Vern Moats at 6.45/217. The following week (June 9), he was at Quaker City Dragway for the second NHRA Division 3 race. His 6.51/212.26 qualified #1, and he went on to win over the eight-car field by beating Mark Thomas in the first round, with a 6.48/213.77 and a semifinal 6.55/214.79 beat Pat Austin. He faced Steve Group in the final and Fred set Low ET of the meet with a 6.42 at 214.28 to get the victory over Group's 6.50/213. He was running really well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His two passes in qualifying were 6.33 and 6.322. The 6.322/218.97 qualified #2 behind Moats' 6.28. There were the only two cars that qualified under 6.40. Unfortunately, Mandoline broke in the first round, against Terry Mullins. Fred followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where he again qualified #2 with a 6.33/222.88. He defeated Ken Veney in round one, with a 6.36/221.78, but lost to Dennis Bedrosian's 6.43/219 in the semifinals when he fell off to a 6.57/219.94. | At the NHRA WWCW at US 131 8/85 Mandoline qualified #1 with a 6.49/215.82 & would use a 6.44/215.82 to defeat #5 Qualifier Don Gerardot in round 1, a 6.60/217.91 on a semi-finals solo when #3 Qualifier Dan Nimmo was a no show & defeated #6 qualifier Terry Mullins in the final 6.54/210.77 to 6.79/205.01. Fred would Run at Bowling Green a couple weeks later where he set Low ET with 6.42, but finished runner up to Bob Newberry 6.44/221.67 to Mandoline's quicker but losing 6.43/218.92. Mandoline would qualify #11 at the US Nationals with a 6.429/219.61. He would defeat #3 qualifier Charlie Byers on a holeshot in Round 1 6.436/218.97 to Byers's 6.432/220.15. Unfortunately Mandoline red lighted away a 6.456 against #15 qualifier Fred Hagen. At The NHRA Winston Finals in Pomona, Mandoline qualified #3 with a 6.334/223.32. He defeated #11 qualifier Chuck Phelps in round 1 6.591/218.97 to 6.745/215.52. But would lose in Round 2 to #7 qualifier Bucky Austin with a 6.411/222 losing effort to Bucky's 6.366/218.65.

Notes: Steve qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.46/222.11. His speed was a career-best (to this point). A first-round 6.57/218.87 beat Chuck Phelps' 6.65/206 while in round two his 6.48/220.58 took out Hans Kuesel's 6.55/211. He had a close race in the semifinals where he just beat Mike Grieco's 6.54/216 with a 6.52/218.76. In the final, he faced low qualifier Brad Anderson. Steve had problems and slowed to 11.95/75.77 while Brad ran 6.55/219 for the victory. He was at Famoso on May 5 for the NHRA Division 6 race. His 6.44/216.89 qualified #2 behind Anderson's 6.39/217. A 6.50/214.28 in round one beat Phelps, and in the second round, he used a 6.45/218.44 to trailer Bret Williamson's 6.63/214. In the semifinals, Kuesel had problems and slowed to 7.82/116, while McGee moved to the finals with a 6.60/191.08. There he met "Bad Brad" for the title. Once again, Anderson got the win when Steve's Camaro broke. These two would qualify one-two at the next NHRA Division 6 race, held at Fremont, as well. Brad's 6.29/223 got the pole while Steve followed with a 6.42/223.32. But in the first round, McGee broke against Tom Lemon. On June 23,he was at Sears Point for the next Division Six race. He qualified #5 for the sixteen car field with a 6.46/218.44. He was upset in the opening round where his 6.69/220.58 fell to Bob Miner's 6.53/210.

In round one, he beat John Armstrong with a 6.90/173.14 and a second-round 6.48/211.16 advanced when Wayne Stoeckel fouled. In the semifinals, he ran another 6.48/211.16 to beat Bob Newberry's 6.70/217. In the final, he faced Ken Veney, who had not even qualified but had gotten in as an alternate. Vern had problems and shut off to 12.43/59.03 while Veney ran 7.27/207 for the victory. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he dominated. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 6.41/217.60. In round one, Dave Sebring's 6.95/159 lost to Moats' 6.46/218.55. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.38/220.91 that took out Veney's 6.62/214. In the final, he ran Newberry, and he ran his slowest time of the day, a 6.72 at 217.07, but it was still enough for the win over Bob's 6.79/205. On May 5, he was at Amarillo for the NHRA Division 5 Opener. It was another eight-car show, and Vern qualified #1 with a 6.79. A first-round 6.73/222.31 beat Mike Fialho, and he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.62/225.20 in the semifinals while defeating Dal Denton. In the final, he went up against Charlie Byers, and Vern's 6.70/220.50 grabbed the victory easily over Byers' 7.18/205. Another win came at Brainerd's second NHRA Division 5 race on May 19. It was more of the same story; he qualified #1, Low ET, and Top Speed at 6.49/220.04 in the semifinals over Darrell Amberson, who broke. And then ran 6.53/213.27 in the final to win over Richard Smith. Things didn't go quite as smoothly at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.52/215.31 qualified #4 in the eight-car show. He beat Bogie Kell in the first round, with a 6.56/214.38, but in the semifinals, his 6.64/213.87 lost to Denton's 6.48/213. He got back into his winning ways at the Pueblo Division 5 race. It was a rained-out event that ended up taking six weeks to complete. On the original date, Moats qualified #1 with a 7.12/183.25. He ran 6.98/210.30 and 7.25/199.27 to advance to the final against Smith. Then it rained to the final was run at Brainerd six weeks later where Vern's 6.49/216.08 got the victory when Richard Smith was unable to show. The wins kept stacking up. On June 2, he won the NHRA Sportsnationals at Beech Bend. It didn't come easy as his 6.56/216.45 qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he faced low qualifier, Newberry, and he stepped up to a 6.47/217.07 to beat Newberry's close 6.48/216. A second-round 6.45/217.70 beat Fred Mandoline's 6.61/217 and a 6.48/216.86 in the semifinal advanced when Denton fouled. His final-round opponent was Steve Group. Steve had troubles and slowed to 8.00/138 while Vern motored to 6.50/216.03 for another victory. On June 8, Bandimere hosted the next NHRA Division 5 race. It was an unusual 12 car show. Of course, Moats qualified #1 with a 6.83/208.33. The next quickest qualifier was Amberson at 7.04! Another 6.83 at 206.89 beat Jim Eberley in the first round, and a solo 7.11/151.00 advanced in round two when Kyle Green broke. He got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 6.84/205.94 in the semifinals. Brad Anderson was waiting to run Vern in the final, and Moats got left on as Brad's 6.81/207 won over Vern's Low ET of the meet 6.76 that was good for the runner-up spot. The story continued at the NHRA Springnationals. He made six passes at National Trail, with the slowest being a 6.41. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.28/222.44 qualified #1. In the first round, his "slow" 6.41/218.97 beat Dick Bell. Veney's second round 6.60/207 fell to Moats' 6.36/220.69 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 6.37/219.83 took care of Newberry's 6.52/207. Final round opponent Pat Austin fouled against him, and Vern's 6.38/218.55 got yet another victory. Vern qualified #1 at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 6.271/221.56 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.35/219.40 beat Carol Henson's 6.51/217. In the semifinals, a 6.37/218.97 beat Bob Newberry's 6.40/219. In the final, he ran Frank Manzo. Unfortunately, he broke a blower pulley, and Manzo took the win a 6.39/221 over Vern's 7.82/110.73.
