Notes: Hagen's 7.538/200.84 was the fourth alternate for the NHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.860/212.26 qualified #10. In the opening round, his 6.87/212.76 lost to Bob Gottschalk's 6.66/196. On May 8th, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Division Three opener. Hagen's 7.01/207.37 qualified #6. A much improved 6.69/210.28 (Top Speed) in the first round defeated Rick Kraft's 6.85/203. Jim Bailey fouled against him in the semifinal, and Fred blasted a 6.61 (Low ET) at 208.33 to win. Unfortunately, he kicked the rods out of it and could not make the final round against Don Gerardot. Shortly after that, he was at Byron for the UDRA season opener. There were 12 alcohol FCs there that ran the first round. As UDRA rules, only the four quickest qualifiers advance to the semifinals. Hagen's 6.76 easily advanced. In the semifinal, he ran 6.83/208.60 to defeat Bob Elliott's 6.84/208. He faced Bailey in the final, and Jim qualified with a 6.76. But this was Fred's race as he ripped off another 6.76/210.40 to beat Bailey's 6.91/207. Fred repeated his 212.76 best at NHRA Indianapolis, where he qualified #6 with a 6.53. His 6.60/211.26 in round one beat Bob Newberry's 6.81/208, but an off-pace 7.09/182.55 lost to Gerardot's 6.77/199 in round two. |

Notes: It was unusual to see Clayton Harris behind the wheel of this alcohol FC after spending years behind the wheel of a TF dragster. And to tell the truth, the car was not very competitive. He was at Warner Robins for the rain-delayed NHRA Division Two race in the first week of April. His 6.91/197.80 was the slowest qualifier on the six cars that showed. He improved to 6.79/207.37 in the first round, but it was not enough, as he lost to Terry Mullins' 6.68/209. He was at DeSoto Memorial in May for the next NHRA Division Two race. His 6.98/193.96 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bogie Kell. Harris' 7.01/192.71 fell to Kell's 6.64/212. He was at Beech Bend early in June for the NHRA Sportsnationals, where his 7.24/191.08 ended up as the seventh alternate for the sixteen-car field. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9 |

Notes: Don qualified #5 at Columbus for the NHRA Division Three opener on May 8th with a 6.89/198.67. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Gerardot. Haywood's 7.00/196.93 lost to Gerardot's 6.74/200. Haywood was runner-up at the 1983 AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City. On June 19,he was at Central Michigan for the third NHRA Division Three race. His 6.74/205.94 qualified #4.In the opening round, his 6.82/203.16 defeated Gary Southern's 6.94/207.In the semi-final,Don's 6.74/205.47 fell to Don Gerardot's 6.54/210.The following week(June 26),he was at St.Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. His 7.01/197.37 qualified second to Mandoline's 6.77/207.These two would work their way into the final. Haywood ran 6.99/199.12 in round one to beat Jack Wyatt and a all-over-the track,7.76/192.31 beat Gary Henderson in the semi-final.Both Haywood and Mandoline were having all sorts of troblems in the final but Don's not so pretty 8.39/180.73 got the victory over Fred equally poor 9.51/113. |

Notes: Arnie was at Maple Grove on August 2 for the NHRA Eastern Regional. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.91/198.67. He had to run low qualifier Ken Veney in round one, and his 6.78/203.16 advanced when Veney fouled. In the semifinals, Jerry Gwynn broke and Arnie advanced into the final with a 6.96/201.34. He met Carl Ruth there, but Carl also broke and Karp ran 6.79/202.42 for the victory. He was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals the following week (August 9). A 6.82/205.01 qualified #4, and he improved to 6.75/199.11 in the first round, over Bob Elliott. A semifinal 6.79/193.96 beat Veney's 6.99/205 and moved him into the final against Frank Manzo. The two had a good race, but Manzo's 6.78/206 got the victory over Arnie's 6.81/201.34. He won the All-Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown and then won the NHRA Division 1 race at New England Dragway on August 23. There he qualified #1 with a 6.70/204.08. The field was short so Arnie got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 6.94/207.37. He met Manzo in the semifinals and got a good leave with his 6.82/206.42 beating Frank's quicker 6.69/206. He was to face Gary Southern in the final, but Gary had broken in his semifinal win so Karp soloed for the title with a engine saving 7.11/132.15. |

Notes: Kell was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Atlanta on March 10. The field was supposed to be an eight-car show, but only six showed up. A 6.63/206.42 qualified #3 and a first-round 6.62/210.28 advanced when Bob Newberry shut off. John Paris also shut off in the semifinals, and Bogie moved into the final with a 6.91/206.89. He faced low qualifier Darrell Amberson, and he fouled away a Low ET of the meet 6.55/209.79, while Darrell got the victory with a 6.96/200. A week later, he was at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.63/207.75. He met low qualifier Brad Anderson and upset him with a 6.74/206.42 that covered Brad's 6.88/215. In round two, he improved to 660/208.42 to beat Carol Henson's 6.64/213. But in the semifinals, Kell slipped to an off-pace 7.14/205.47 take lost to Ken Veney's 6.46/215. Still, it was a good showing for the team. On March 31, he was at Warner Robins for the second NHRA Division 2 race. They only got the qualifying done before rain washed out the race until April 6. Bogie qualified #2 with a 6.71/208.81. Back for the rain date, Kell faced Barry Paton in round one, and he was late getting out, and Barry's 6.62/207 beat his 6.57/210.77. He was back at Atlanta on April 21 for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he ran 6.55/212.26 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. This set up a first-round match with low qualifier Veney. Bogie ran well, but his 6.62/212.76 lost to Ken's 6.49/215. The third Division 2 race was held at Desoto Memorial, and Kell qualified #1 with a 6.64/212.26 (Top Speed). He was consistent as he ran 6.64/212.26 in round one, over Clayton Harris, and in the semifinals, another 6.64/211.76 beat Paris. This put him in the final against Terry Mullins. However, this was Kell's day, and a final 6.61 (Low ET) grabbed the victory over Mullins' 7.16/178. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Bogie qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.57/210.37, but a 6.67/205.76 in the first round, failed to get past Vern Moats' 6.56/214. Shortly after that (June 2), he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. His 6.60/212.76 qualified #11. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.05/174.89 lost to Brad Anderson's 6.75/207. |
