Notes: Former Dyno Don Nicholson car. Ran at an Englishtown four-car Match Race where Denton lost to Joe Lepone and Frank Iaconio but beat Don Campanello with 7.92/176.47 bests. At Darlington, for the IHRA Winternationals, Harold qualified #5, and in the opening round, Chuck Aronson fouled against him. in round two, eventual winner Lee Shepherd ran 7.70 to beat his 7.89. He ran a better 7.76 to qualify fifth at the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals but lost early. Denton was at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of competition, his 7.86 beat Carl Hobson. In round two, a 7.97/181 took out Bob Harris. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, he fouled against the eventual winner Rickie Smith. The car had new paint in 1983. |

Notes: Bob did really well at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. It was a sixteen-car field anf=d his 8.07/165.75 qualified #8. He made it into the final against Chuck Aronson only to have his Camaro break and slow to 14.68/36.59, while Aronson ran 6.58/162 for the victory. Morton was at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.529/162.16 failed to qualify. Bob qualified #15 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with an 8.039/168.22. He lost to Dave Hutchens in the opening round. The team also did not qualify at Indy (no times available.) Bob also ran 8.07 at St. Louis on 6/83 and 167.28 somewhere. Did Morton live in Des Moines, IA, or Independence, MO? |

Notes: Early in June, Shirley was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 7.65/179.64 qualified #13. In the opening round, his 7.72/180.36 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.48/185. He also qualified #13 at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. He upset Jim Ruth in the first round before the Camaro broke against Smith in round two. He qualified on the "bump" at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 7.64/185.56. In the opener, his 7.64/184.42 fell to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 7.36/191. Edgewater was the next stop on the IHRA tour for its Summernationals race. A 7.65/181.81 qualified #14 there, but Smith stopped him in round one. The PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, were run under IHRA rules in '86, and Barry's 7.56/183.29 qualified #6. In the first round, his 7.65 defeated Gary Hajek's 7.78. Glidden went into hard tire shake in round two and shut down while Shirley advanced with a 7.76/177.16. In the semi-final, his 7.70 lost to Billy Ewing's 7.56. Barry qualified #13 at Bristol for IHRA's season-ending Fallnationals. It was a tough show to make as the "bump" was a 7.67. Notes: Rickie qualified second with a 7.63/182.92 at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He went on to win, beating Lee Shepherd in the final. Another win came at the IHRA World Nationals, this time dropping Warren Johnson in the final. A 7.80/177 qualified Rickie second at the IHRA Springnats, and he went on to win over Shepherd in the final. The winning continued with a victory at the MIR Mountain Motor Nats over Johnny Downey. At the IHRA Fallnationals, Smith qualified fourth with a 7.70/181.08, but he lost to a Warren Johnson holeshot 7.70 in the semifinals that beat Rickie's 7.65. Another win over Shepherd came on September 11 at the IHRA US Open. Rickie qualified #4 with a 7.73/180.72. He had a burndown with Johnson in the semifinals that saw Smith advance when Johnson had problems on his run and slowed. Rickie was sharp on the tree in the final, and his 7.73/181.45 held off Shepherd's 7.71/180 for the win. Going into Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals, Smith held a slight points lead over Shepherd. He qualified #4 with a 7.70/181.08, and he beat Harold Robinson in round one, but in the semifinals, his late 7.65 lost to Johnson's 7.70. Shepherd went on to win, taking the IHRA Pro Stock championship. Smith finished second in points on the IHRA tour. Notes: Don qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.91/205.47. Unfortunately, the team hurt some parts and could not race Ken Veney in the first round, of eliminations. Enriquez ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet. In the opening round, his 7.04/196.07 beat Rich Galli. A quick-leaving 7.10/195.65 beat Derry O'Donovan's quicker 7.02/197 in round two, but a 6.98/193.54 lost to eventual winner Dale Armstrong's 6.76/205 in round three (32 car field). |
