Notes: Don qualified #9 at the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.51/157.34. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Bob Glidden. Coonce fouled against him. At the NHRA Western Regional Opener at Green Valley, Don qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.44/158.17. He ran a career-best (to this point) 8.41 in the first round, to beat Don Patrick's Arrow. In the semifinals he lost to Lee Shepherd. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had only eight-car Pro fields so qualifying was tough, but Don managed to qualify #7. He lost to Glidden in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.65/155.17 qualified #11. He met Frank Iaconio in the first round, and fouled away an 8.68/154.90 while Frank advanced with an 8.55/158. Next stop on the NHRA trail was Denver for the Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car field and Don's 9.25/143.54 held for the #7 spot. In the first round his 9.28/143.31 lost to Pat Musi's 9.22/148. He qualified #8 at Indianapolis for the NHRA Eastern Regional held there in July. An 8.84/152.02 in the first round, lost to Bob Ingles' 8.56/156. Next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Coonce qualified #15 with an 8.64/155.17. In round one he fouled with an 8.81/150.25 while Ingles advanced with an 8.58/157. Don did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he was at Martin, Michigan's, US 131 for the PHR Championships the following week. He qualified #5 with an 8.55/156.25 in the eight-car show. Once again he would have to race low qualifier Glidden in round one. Don ran 8.52 in that first-round encounter and won when Bob's Fairmont slowed to 8.67. Don improved to an 8.50 in the semifinals, but it wasn't enough to beat Andy Mannarino's 8.43. Still, it was a good outing - he had beaten Glidden! This was followed by a win at Beech Bend for the NHRA Eastern Regional. A holeshot 8.58/158.73 beat Dave Hutchens' 8.53 in the final. At Indianapolis for the NHRA Nationals, Don really jumped up in qualifying. His 8.45/158.73 held for the #4 spot in the field. He lasted until the semifinals before losing to Shepherd. Only five cars showed at Houston for the NHRA Western Regional final. Coonce ran 8.60/154.37 to qualify #3, but he fouled away an 8.84/153 in the first round, against Doug Messner.

Notes: Alban qualified #12 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, he lost to Randy Humphrey. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.72/157.34 qualified #5 in the field, but he lost to Don Nicholson in the first round. He continued to qualify well when he showed up at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, hitting 8.65/158.73 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, by qualifying #9 that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Gauthier ran a strong 8.67/157.61, but it wasn't enough as Glidden moved on with an 8.51/158.

Notes: Gauthier failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran really well at Cayuga on May 17 for the NHRA Eastern Regional. He reached the final against Frank Iaconio. But his 8.62/158.45 finished runner-up to Frank's 8.45/160. Alban qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals in July with an 8.57/159.29. He slowed to an 8.75/155.17 in round one, that lost to Mark Yuill's 8.54/158. NHRA held its next Eastern Regional race at Maple Grove on August 2, and Gauthier was there. His 8.60 qualified #5 and gave him the honor of running low qualifier, Iaconio, in the first round. Alban gave it a good shot, but his 8.58/159.01 finished second best to Frank's 8.53/158. The following week(August 9), he was at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran a great 8.48/162.45 to qualify #6 in the eight-car show. This time he lost to the eventual winner Lee Shepherd, in the opening round, but his booming 162 held up for the Top Speed of the event honors. 37 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Alban ran 8.57/160.42 to get the #11 spot in the field. He faced Bob Glidden in the first round, and had the car break on the line. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. It was a great showing for the Canadian.

Notes: Paul qualified #10 at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown with an 8.702/151.00. He improved to an 8.601/156.25 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to overcome eventual winner Lee Shepherd's 8.58/159. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where his 8.820/150.50 best was good for the third alternate. A week later (August 10), he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships. Paul qualified #5 in the eight-car show with an 8.71. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round match with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Bob won their race and went on to win the event. He failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Notes: 339 W-2 Wedge Small block, not a hemi. Set national ET record at 8.48 at Gainesville, then reset it at Fremont at 8.43. Tested 342 Ted Spehar engine. | Bob parked his championship-winning Fairmont and went to Chrysler for '79. Racers thinking it would take him some time to adjust to the new combination, were not too happy after qualifying ended at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There at the top of the ladder, was Glidden's 8.56/159.57 (Top Speed). An 8.59 at only 147.05 beat Brad Yuill's 8.83/154 in the first round. He picked up to an 8.50 at only 144.69 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.70/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro in round two. His speed continued to drop as in the semifinal; Bob ran 8.58 at 140.84 to drop Don Nicholson's 8.83/156. That put him in the final against Joe Satmary. Bob lost a freeze plug and had to drive through his own water, and still set an 8.49 track record at a paltry 150.75 to beat Joe's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was more of the same for the other Pro Stock drivers. Bob qualified #1 at 8.52/159.57 (Top Speed). A first-round 8.58 beat Nicholson, while his 8.55/149 advanced when Satmary fouled in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with an 8.48/150 over Mark Yuill. It was good to see long-time Pro Stock campaigner Ronnie Sox up for the challenge in the final. Sox was also running a 340 based Mopar car, and this was the first all Mopar NHRA final in six years. But it was apparent that his hasn't as stout as Glidden's as in the final, Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.53/147.29 as Sox fouled with an 8.75/156 attempt. Things didn't change when the teams pulled into Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again, Glidden headed the Pro Stock qualifiers with an 8.54/158.45 (Low ET and Top Speed). It was an eight-car show, and Bob breezed past the first-round with an 8.59 when Jim Kinnett fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.61/151 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.66. In the final, he ran Lee Shepherd. The two left together, but soon Bob took control, and his 8.59/149 beat Lee's 8.71/155. At the NHRA Springnationals, there was some hope for the other Pro Stock racers when Bob didn't quite win all the accolades. Sure he set Low ET, was first in qualifying, and won the race, but someone else got Top Speed (Larry Lombardo at 159.85). His 8.57 (Low ET) was tops in qualifying, and he ran 8.69, 8.66, and 8.66 over Satmary, Shepherd, and Frank Iaconio to reach the final against Lombardo. A final round 8.61/157.61 copped the victory over Larry's 8.76/151. Bob was now undefeated for a full year in NHRA National event competition. He finally lost at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals. He had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 9.08/148.27. In the first round, a 9.12/141.73 beat Nicholson, but he fouled against Randy Humphrey in the semifinals. He made it one round further at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #1 with an 8.52, then set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.51/160.14 on his way to a final-round meeting with Iaconio. Bob's Arrow broke in the final, and Frank got the victory with an 8.60/156. He got back to his winning ways at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Glidden qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.49/158.17 (Top Speed). He beat Mark Yuill in round one, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET at 8.46 over Nicholson, who fouled. In the final, he met Iaconio again, and this time the little Arrow didn't break. Bob ran 8.47 to take the win over Frank's 8.53. In August, Byron held an interesting best of three match race between Nicholson's Mustang and Glidden's Arrow. They were said to be legal weight, but the times were pretty quick. Dyno beat Bob three straight with a best of 8.34, while Glidden's three runs were 8.46, an 8.36 with a red light, and an 8.37. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Bob was running some special carburetors from Holley. Once again, he qualified #1 with an 8.58. Another 8.58 at 157.34 beat Kinnett in round one. He set Low ET in round two with an 8.56/157.61 that took out Andy Mannarino. In the semifinals, another 8.58/156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.71/157. In the final, he faced off against Lombardo in Bill Jenkins Camaro. Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.61/143.50 over Larry's 8.72/154.

Notes: Also 8.74 at NHRA Columbus 6/80. Roy qualified #10 at the NHRA Winternationals but lost to Bob Glidden in the first round. He did better at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he was runner-up to Randy Humphrey's 8.54/154 with an 8.72/156.52. He was runner-up again at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins, where he fouled away an 8.78/154.37 in the final. Roy had the misfortune of qualifying #9 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.74/156.24. It was unfortunate because he again met Glidden in the first round. This time Roy's car broke on the line giving Bob a single into round two. Roy was at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals, where he used an 8.71/156.24 to qualify #13. Unfortunately, he could not run in the first round, and alternate Sam Gianino took his place in the field. Lee Shepherd beat him in the first round, at the US Pro Stock Open at Maryland International. At Indy for the US Nationals, Roy just made the field with an 8.71 that held for #16. He lost early. Hill spent a lot of time with his big match race, IHRA motors, and skipped many NHRA events, including the High Nationals, the Grandnationals in Canada, and the season's final two events, the Fallnationals and the World Finals. He was one of many that were unhappy with the weight breaks for the Chrysler cars.
