Notes: Dave was at Irwindale on March 14 for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 7.55 at a ridiculous shut off speed of just 65 mph. In the opening round, he ran a track record 7.30 at 204.08 to beat Lee LeBaron who lost a blower belt. In the semifinals, opponent Bob Hankins went up in smoke and Dave ran 7.36/189.86 to advance into the final. There, he would face Willie Borsch. Willie's best run that day was only a 7.71 so it looked like it was an easy win for Hough. But it was never easy when you faced Borsch. Dave spun the tires in the final and his 7.84 and an amazing 210.28 finished second best to the "Winged express" 7.71/201. On July 25, Dave was at Irwindale for a best of three match race against Dave Beebe in the "Dodge Fever" Challenger FC. Beebe won the first race with his 7.55/190 beating "Nanook's" 7.59/196.92, but the fuel altered came back to win the next two and the match with times of 7.34/207.36 and 7.35/206.88. He won the Labor Day Championships at Irwindale over an eight-car field. A 7.67/141.06 beat the "Scrounger" in the first round, while in round two, he advanced with a 7.88/139.53 when Gary Essman shut off after having a small fire on the line. In the final, he set Low ET and Top Speed while winning over Roger Garten with a 7.38/203.60.

Notes: Changed competition number this year. Tom was the first alternate at Pomona but in the Speed Racer Vega. He did not run the Jim Wemett car in NHRA national event competition. This was the former Mr Norm's funny car.

Notes: Dale lost an engine during qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The resulting fire burned up the car. But rain postponed the race a week, and Dale had time to repair it for eliminations. Lost this body in a fire at Columbus race. Qualified it #13 at 6.253/229.59 and lost in round one, to Kenny Bernstein, 6.18/238.72 to 6.238/226.70. Not sure when the fire occurred. on the first-round loss? Dale ran 6.175 for the first alternate at Atlanta. Was that in the Challenger or the Omni? (The Omni ran at Gainesville).

He lost to Bob Pickett in round one, 6.48/229 to Larry's close 6.506/196.07. That was Larry's last NHRA national event. Did the team run 6.29/230 somewhere this year?

Notes: Dale started his NHRA national event season at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was having all kinds of problems in qualifying and, at one point, field-stripped the car down to the bare chassis in the Gainesville Hilton Hotel parking lot. Even after all that, he could only run a 7.380 best (speed unknown), far from the 6.03 "bump." He went to Baton Rouge, where he was the third alternate for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 10.98 (speed unknown) shutoff pass. He was at Columbus on June 10 for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 6.194/207.37 (fourth alternate) failed to crack the 6.00 "bump." Shortly after that (June 24), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.12/231.95 qualified #6. He lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the first round. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Grandnationals at 6.400/180.36 but lost to Frank Hawley in round one when he fell off to a 7.799/111.38. The following week (July 8), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Dale's 6.11/225 qualified #11, and in the first round, he ran a career-best (to this point) 6.02 at 236. The problem was that Don Prudhomme was running 5.82/250 in the other lane. Dale qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a new personal best, a 5.980/233.76. In the first round, he lost to Tim Grose, 5.941/243.90 to 8.315/113.92. That was Dale's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Dale started his national event season at Gainesville, where his 6.350/214.08 was the fifth alternate. He was the third alternate at Atlanta at 6.692/193.71. Those were Dale's only two NHRA national events. He went to Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, and the car caught fire during a 6.22 run. Notes: The '81 season had an interesting start for the "Blue Max" team. They showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Beadle ran a track record 5.97 at 245.90 (Top Speed) to qualify first. He beat Dennis Geisler with a 6.01/238, and in round two, Mike Dunn with another new track record 5.93 at 245.90. In the semifinals, he again went 5.93 at 245.23 to beat Don Prudhomme. But the win came at a price as the engine blew and tore the roof of the Horizon body. The team didn't have a spare body, so Kenny Bernstein offered his spare. The roof of Bernstein's car was grafted onto the "Max's" topless body for the final. After all that work, he came up to the line in the final to face Billy Meyer, who had been having his own troubles (used up four engines), but the two both had problems, and Meyer's 6.52/205 got the victory over Beadle's 6.66/236.22. The next stop was at Fremont for the East/West meet, and while Beadle didn't win, he did set Low ET at 6.04. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, the team qualified unusually further back in the field with a 6.05/230.76 that was good for the #10 spot in the show. He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.20/234.37, but an off-pace 6.31/230.76 in round two lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.27/237. The next event they attended was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. Raymond made it to the final before losing to Bernstein. Green Valley Raceway was their next stop for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. A 6.45/227.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, and he picked up to 6.32/233.76 in the first round to beat Chris Berg. A 6.25/228.42 beat Bernstein in the semifinals, and he went into the finals to meet with Hoover. Beadle got another runner-up finish as his 6.45/231.36 lost to Hoover's 6.32/231. Atlanta hosted the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 26, featuring eight-car fields in the nitro classes. Raymond qualified #1 with a track record 5.96 at 230.17.
