Notes: Warren debuted Jerome Bradford's Monte Carlo at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals on March 22. He qualified #2 with a 7.93/171. He picked up to a first-round 7.87/172 over Sam Carroll's 8.17/168. A 7.91 took care of Paul Gant in round two, and in the semifinal, he beat Roy Hill's 8.17/167 with a 7.92/172. Unfortunately for Johnson, when the car was weighed after his semifinal run, the car was found to be too light. He was disqualified, and Hill was reinstated into the final. At the second IHRA event, the Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham, he qualified #4. He made it into the semifinal before losing to Rickie Smith's 7.96/173 with an 8.05/173.74. On May 17, Warren grabbed a big win at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He qualified #4 with an 8.01/173.41 behind the seven-second Mustangs of Smith, Ronnie Sox, and Harold Denton. Johnson dipped into the sevens with a first-round 7.97. In the second round, a 7.99 beat Hill's 8.24. Sox was caught napping in the semifinal, and Johnson's 8.10 beat Ronnie's 7.99. Denton's former Don Nicholson Mustang lost the clutch in the final, and Warren motored to a 7.99/171.42 victory. In June, he was runner-up to Smith at the IHRA World Nationals and then traveled to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 7.93/172.09. No one else ran quicker than 8.10. He beat Jim Feurer's Zephyr in the first round, with an 8.03/170.13. In the semifinal, an 8.13/169.18 beat Chuck Aronson. A final round 8.37/167 gave Warren the win over Gary Duckworth's 8.61/159. Another win came at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he stopped Sox in the final. At Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals, Warren used an 8.08/171.42 to qualify #3. He ran 8.09, 8.23, and 8.09 to make the final against Sox. Ronnie reversed the finish of the previous IHRA race by downing WJ's 8.11/168.85 with a 7.99/172. Sox kept the heat on Johnson by once again beating WJ in the final at the IHRA US Open, where his final round 7.89/174 thumped the Monte Carlo's shut off 8.25/161.87. Warren was running 8.0's there while Ronnie was running 7.8's. Warren also won the Atlanta Mountain Motor Challenge in October. He qualified #2 with 7.91/174 and won a critical semifinal race against Smith. Smith ran a quicker 7.92 but lost to WJ's 7.94. Warren beat Gary Brown in the final for the title. The car was too radical for NHRA tech. The 7.93 at Gateway was the first AHRA seven. Won IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with a 7.999 at 171.42. Also ran 7.93 at AHRA Gateway Nats 81 and 7.90/174.20 in Atlanta Mountain Motor Challenge race on 10/10/81 (won over surprise finalist Gary Brown). |

Notes: Won the 1975 Winternationals. Won IHRA Bristol over Beck in June, 6.10/238.72 (IHRA speed record) to 6.18/225.56. On 7/01/75, ran first IHRA 5-second, 240 mph run at Union Grove with a 5.89/244.48 (need to confirm if this was SR21 or SR22). Runner-up to Beck at IHRA Dragway 42 in August 1975. Ran 6.03/245.23. Was that Swamp Rat 21 or 22? If 22, return this entry's speed to 244.56. Swamp Rat 21 was originally built for "Jungle Jim," but he changed his mind before it was finished. Garlits ran it until mid-year, then brought out 22. The easiest way to tell the difference in photos is that 21 had a black roll cage, and 22 was chromed. Pretty sure the Union Grove/IHRA record was set by 21. Werner Ch. Guillory. Photo: Big Daddy's 1975 Rear Engine Dragster - 'Chute Out at Phoenix. |

Notes: Ruth started his '77 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals on January 23. He qualified #6 with a 6.55 and in round one, beat Lyle Fisher's 6.59 with a 6.50. In round two, he stepped it up to a 6.31, but lost to Jeb Allen's 6.25. Jerry got back into the race when Clive Skilton broke while winning his second round race and was unable to return for the semifinal. Ruth had been the Low ET loser from the second round and got in on the "break rule." Unfortunately for him, he ran Allen again and once again lost with his 6.38 being second best to Allen's 6.34. A week later (January 30), he took a big win at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.04 to qualify #11. A first-round 5.98 beat Hank Johnson and in round two, a consistent 6.00/234.37 beat James Warren. In the semifinals, he outRance McDaniel's 6.34 with a 6.02. In the final, he met the "old man," Don Garlits. Don ran a sub-par 6.38/238 in the final that gave Ruth's 5.99/230.76 the victory. On March 6, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He didn't run very well there; he qualified #23 and went out early. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he again went out early, as his first-round 6.28/230 lost to Paul Longenecker's 6.15/240. He won the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway. At the Division's next stop, Seattle, he qualified #5 and lost to Hank Johnson's 6.12 in the first round, with a 6.46/222.22. Ruth had a bit of bad luck at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #16 with a 6.16/200.89, but blew a rear end. He was unable to run in eliminations and first alternate Johnny Abbott took his place in the field. At the second PDA race held at Fremont on June 23, Ruth qualified #2 with a 5.92. He failed to make the finals. At the fourth NHRA Division 6 race held at Woodburn, Ruth made it into the final only to be stopped by Johnson who ran Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.95/240 to top Jerry's 6.61/202.04 runner-up effort. He raced at the NHRA Summernationals, but drove Don Garlits' car there. |

Notes: Ran Grumpy's ‘70 Camaro while Bill still ran the ‘69 machine. Photo from Maple Grove. Car was not as successful as the ‘69 Camaro. | Dick debuted this car on July 19 at the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #14 with a 10.18/135.33 (one spot behind Bill Jenkins' 10.16). In the first round, Ed Miller fouled against him and his 10.13/136.77 advanced. But in round two, his transmission broke and Dick Humbert soloed in Billy Stepp's Challenger. |

Notes: Ran match races and AHRA and IHRA events. Don was dissatisfied with the NHRA weight breaks for the Mopar Hemi-powered cars, but when NHRA lowered the weight break to 7.10 lbs per cubic inch at the NHRA Gatornationals, he thought he would show up and give it a try. A 9.06/150.25 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field and I'm sure he wasn't too happy when a 9.09/149.50 in the first round, lost to Ron Hutter's Vega at 9.06/149. He went to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals where he ended up as first alternate for the eight-car show. Things didn't go much better at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Clyde Hodges' 9.41/147 in the first round, with a 9.43/147.54. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. |

Notes: Went 7.14/204.54 as runner-up at NHRA Englishtown 1974, where Jungle wheelstood all the way down the track. Also 6.76 at Seattle, but no doubt ran better numbers this year. |"Jungle Jim" performed really well this year, and he had to rank in the top ten of anyone's Funny Car list of '74. On May 11 he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. He had two of his cars there, the second one being driven by Roy Harris. Both cars made the final and it was strange to see "Jungle Jim" vs "Jungle Jim." Liberman started his march over the eight-car field by beating Joe Jacono in the opening round with a 6.69/192.30. In the semifinals, his 6.59/209.79 beat Jake Crimmins' quicker 6.55/215 in the Swensen-Lani Vega. The all JJ final was won by Liberman with a 6.55/210, but it was an easy win and Harris' transmission refused to shift out of low gear. The next day, Liberman was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified #8 with a 7.12/202.24. He failed to reach the finals. He won the Englishtown Memorial Day Classic Funny Car race by stopping Paul Smith in the "Fireball Vega" at 6.64 in the final with a 6.63. His next stop was at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. Things did not go his way there. He lost all three of his races. In his first race, he faced Don Prudhomme and Jim's 6.54/204.08 lost to the "Snake's" 6.49/217. He got out of shape and shut off in his second race against Charlie Proite and a 6.67/215.82 in the third race lost to Tom McEwen's 6.57/221. From there he went to New England for an eight-car show. He qualified #4 with a 6.67/192 and in round one, his 6.79/175 beat Pete Hill's 7.01/190, but he burnt a piston and was unable to run in the semifinals. Jim was back at Englishtown on July 3 for the Funny Car Spectacular. Ten Funny Car's were on hand and after the first-round, the four lowest ETs advanced to the semifinals. JJ won his first race with a 6.90/210.28 over Smith, but his ET wasn't low enough to advance to the semis. In a consolation race, he ran 6.87/208.33 over Roy Harris. Jim didn't run a lot of the big races, instead concentrating on his lucrative match race schedule, but he did race at the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.51 qualified #6, and he ran 6.85/177.86 over a tire smoking Smith in round one. A 6.54 beat Don Schumacher in round two, and he moved into the final by downing Tommy Grove in the semifinals with a 6.56/216.34. He lost to Al Segrini in the final where a full track wheelstand slowed him to a 7.14/204.54 that lost to Al's 6.83/152. On July 25 he was at Maple Grove for it's All-American Series Funny Car race. It was a sixteen-car field and Liberman showed up using a aluminum motor for the first time. He had a close first-round race with Bob Parmer that had both drivers run 6.68 (JJ at 200.44), but Jim got the win light. It round two he lost to Ed McCulloch. As you can tell, JJ was frequently at Englishtown. He was there again on August 14 for its Race of Champions event. Unfortunately, he lost an engine in the first round, while racing Raymond Beadle. He made a stop at New England for the Eighth annual Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32 car show. Jim beat Sammy Miller in the first round, with a 6.54/212 and in round two he and Pee Wee Wallace both ran 6.58 (Jim at 212), but once again Liberman got there first. In round three, his 6.68/187 lost to eventual winner Bill Leavitt's 6.47/214. He was at Bristol in September for IHRA's All-American Nationals. Jim qualified on the pole with a 6.53 and in round two he beat Ron O'Donnell in the "Damn Yankee" with a 6.56. In the semifinals he lost to Smith. Maple Grove held its Funny Car Grand Finale in October and JJ won it. It was an eight-car field and Jim started his day by beating Crimmins in the "Swensen & Lani" Vega with a 6.67. A 6.52/201 in the semifinals beat a crossed-up Bob Lagana and in the final, he set Low ET with a 6.44 at 207.30 to win over Leavitt. Connecticut was also holding its Funny Car Finale in October and JJ was there, but his ailing 7.13/182.55 in the first round, lost to Joe Jacono's 6.73/205. As the season wound down, Jim was still able to score another victory by winning the Lakeland National Open in November. There he set Low ET in the final with a 6.71 at only 167.91 to win over Segrini's 6.97/191. |

Notes: Gapp and Roush were cornerstones of Ford Pro Stock racing. From their Boss 429-powered Mavericks through their 351-powered Pintos, Mustang IIs, and this Maverick. But '76 was the beginning of the end for the team. NHRA rules all but factored the Fords out of existence, and the team was forced to go elsewhere to be competitive. They found the IHRA rules more to their liking and raced more under that organization. Wayne started the year in the four-door Maverick. Wayne qualified #6 at Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic with an 8.96. In the opening round, he improved to 8.92/152.54 to defeat Brad Yuill's 9.25/146. In round two, he beat Bob Glidden, but he lost to eventual winner Larry Lombardo in the semi-final. He had a great outing at the Pomona Winters. He qualified #6 at 8.831/153.58. He took out Gordie Rivera in round one, 8.86/153.84 to 9.05/152. In round two, he eked out a win over Warren Johnson, 8.92/152.80 to 8.95/154. He easily defeated an off-pace Dyno Don Nicholson in the semis, 8.87/153.32 to 9.30/135. But he faced Glidden in their ninth NHRA final round match-up (and their last). Bob won a definitive victory in the final round, 8.821/155.70 to Wayne's 8.916/153.32. Wayne debuted a 1976 Pinto at Gainesville (see the other entry). |

Notes: Jim drove at two NHRA events in 1979. Did Jake Crimmins drive at IHRA Milan? The car reportedly went 238.09 there. Jim was at Englishtown in the spring for the NHRA Division One race. In the first round, his 6.65/210.77 defeated Bob Seifert. A 6.50/164.53 beat George Johnson in the semifinals. He lost to Jake Crimmins in the final. Qualified #14 at NHRA Columbus at 6.300/216.34 and defeated Trip Shumake in round one, 6.282/216.34 to 6.322/236.84. Raymond Beadle and Jim were both off the pace in round two, but Beadle was less so and won a 6.61 to 6.93 contest. Adolph Improved to a #5 qualifying 6.194/231.95 at NHRA Englishtown. He won another first-round contest with another 6.28. A 6.280/231.36 took out Bob Pickett's 11-second shut-off this time. Ron Colson's 6.27/230 took out Adolph's (blown transmission) own 11-second shut-off in round two. He was back at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. This race had all ten cars competing, running two rounds with the two Low ET cars advancing to the final. Jim didn't reach the final as he got out of shape in his first race and shut off against Jake Crimmins, and his 6.36/226.13 lost to Roy Harris' 6.29/230 in his second. This was the last NHRA event for the team. Jim showed up at the World Finals in Pat Johnson's Playboy-sponsored Corvette. | R/U at the March Meet to Menzies/Jackson. - Joe Mooore |
