Notes: Indy 5.985 was the second entry into the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club (Eddie Pauling’s 5.973 had been disallowed as it was run at a match race). The team had a fuel tank issue that vexed them all season. The car was hurting itself on every pass. After the team found and fixed the faulty fuel tank, they went on a tear, winning 32 car match races In Seattle and Boise, and running the five at Indy. Finished the year with a win at the World Finals. | The Arrow debuted at the NHRA Winternationals, but the team failed to qualify. They also failed to make the show at the Gatornationals. Raymond qualified #1 at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals with a 6.74, but in round one, Beadle and Gene Snow both lost traction and Gene's 7.36/176 came out on top over Raymond's 7.58/143.31. On June 4, for the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis, Beadle qualified second with a 6.46/207.86. He set Low ET with a 6.39/211.77 pass over Jim White in the first round, but a 6.55 by John Collins in the semis beat the Max's 6.62. The following week (June 11), the team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where once again they failed to qualify. At Alamo, San Antonio, on June 18 for the AHRA Nationals, a 6.60/204 qualified the team sixth in the eight-car field. Tom McEwen's 6.36/219 beat Raymond's 6.73 in the first round. The "Max's" next stop was at Byron's Funny Car Championships. All cars made two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Beadle had trouble in the first round, against McEwen and he shut off to a 9.14/106.38 loss. In round two, Beadle’s 6.37/224.43 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.55/184. It was around this time that Raymond put an order in to Keith Black for four aluminum KB engines. The "Blue Max" had been running Milodon engines and would continue to do so while awaiting the delivery. The NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown didn't go so well as a 6.35/230.17 best was only the first alternate for the field. Beadle took a win on August 20 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He qualified second with a 6.37/223.88 and set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.28/220.90 over Gordie Bonin's 6.60/222. In the semifinal, a 6.35/221.66 beat Snow's 6.40/230. In the final, a 6.29/229.59 beat Tom Hoover's 6.36/221. Another win came at the Nightfire 500 at Firebird Raceway. It was another show that had two rounds of racing with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Beadle beat John Collins in the first round, and he ran a solo 6.58 that guaranteed him a spot in the final. He faced John Lombardo who had gained a final round spot with a 6.45. After five years of trying, Beadle won with a 6.60/206.82 when Lombardo had troubles and shut off to an 8.51. Shortly after that, he stopped off at Seattle and won by beating Ron Colson with a holeshot 6.21 over the "Hawaiian." Then came Indy where their 5.98 qualified #1. Beadle lasted until round two where McEwen's 6.18 put the Max on the trailer. At the NHRA World Finals, they qualified fourth with a 6.13/234.98 and then ran a 6.20/232.55 in the first round, over Henry Harrison's 6.81/227. In the second round, a 6.15/233.76 beat Pat Foster's 6.23/239.36 in the Super Shops Arrow. A semifinal 6.27/228.42 beat a tire-smoking Denny Savage. In the final, Beadle's 6.18/234.98 beat McEwen's off pace 7.18.

Notes: Willie was in New England for the Eighth Annual Funny Car Nationals. Unfortunately, a 7.04/207 in the first round, lost to Fred Bickford's 6.90/196. Borsch was at Warner Robins for a best of three match race against Shirl Greer in August. It was reported that Willie was running a Donovan in the race coverage. Willie went into a wheelstand in their first race, and he shut down. In the second race, his 6.78/212 beat Greer's 6.80/207. The third race was never run as the weather became a factor. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. Also ran 7.99 at Milan.

Notes: Stan ran well at the IHRA Nationals at Dragway 42 in August. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.60/221.13. An improved 6.52/212.76 beat a tire-smoking Ron O'Donnell, and in round two, his 6.36/220.58 took out Kenny Safford's 6.58/214 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He lost in the semifinals when his 6.61/200.44 fell to Denny Savage's 6.42/222 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." After such a good showing, it was surprising to see Bowman DNQ a week later (August 24) at the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. His best of 6.63 failed to make the eight-car show. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #4 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.244/226.13 (behind only Beadle, Prudhomme, and McCulloch). Unfortunately, he lost to Bob Pickett with this huge wheelstand in the first round, 6.43/229 to 12.83/70.20. That was the team's only NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Dunn started his season at OCIR for its Grand Premiere race. It was an eight-car show that had all eight cars make two runs, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. He and Kenny Bernstein both got out of shape and shut off in their first race, and Mike crossed the stripe first with a 16.11. In the second race, he had to shut down again when the "Hawaiian" went up in smoke. He lost to Trip Shumake's 6.65. Mike attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.493/233.16 (fourth alternate) failed to make the show. After qualifying second, he won the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.08/240.00 behind John Force's 6.03/237. He set Low ET in the first round while beating his dad with a 6.00/240.64 to Jim's 6.19/241. A 6.07/240.4 in the semifinal defeated Tim Grose's 6.26/223. In the final, he beat Henry Harrison with a 6.04/238.09. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 5.93/245.90. A 5.879/247.25 beat Billy Meyer in the first round, and he advanced into the semifinals when Force fouled against him in round two. But in his semifinal race, Mike's 6.06/233.76 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.94/240 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The "Hawaiian" team was at OCIR for its 64 Funny Car race in April. There were 22 FCs, and all made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.05/243.24 time in his first race lost to Shumake's 5.93/233 in Joe Pisano's car, and his 6.32/230.76 over Bruce Iverson in his second race was still nowhere near quick enough to qualify for the final. The following weekend(April 9), OCIR did it again; they held another race run in the same format. Dunn still didn't reach the final, but he won both his races. A 6.27/234.37 beat Gary Densham in the first race, and his 6.24233.76 beat Mert Littlefield in the second one. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 6.05/243.90 best was the second alternate. Early in May, the team made a stop at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Mike's 6.81 qualified #6. In the opening round, his 6.53/230.17 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.22/236. In mid-June, things went bad at Columbus during the running of the NHRA Springnationals. Mike had the throttle stick wide open during qualifying, and the car's supercharger exploded. The car then went up in flames, and Dunn drove into the "catch net" at around 130mph. The right rear slick had blown out and the body shredded upon impact with the net. Mike was ok, but the car was wrecked. Car owner Roland Leong immediately purchased Steve Chrisman's BB/FC Omni for racing the following week. Mike ran his best NHRA speed while qualifying at the World Finals. Unfortunately, he crashed on the run and could not compete.

Notes: On March 23, Goldstein was at Irwindale for its Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car show and his 6.57 qualified second behind Ed McCulloch's 6.56. In the first round, both he and his opponent, Dale Pulde, ran 6.93 (Leroy at 210.28), but Dale crossed the stripe first in the M/T Grand Am. He was back at Irwindale in mid-April for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, he was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.47 lost to Larry Christopherson's 6.88. Leroy was driving the "Mr. Ed" car at the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #7 at 6.612/221.67. He got out of shape against Al Segrini in the first round, and shut off. That was Leroy's only NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Al was at Bristol on June 22 for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.86, but he lost to Norm Wilcox, who was driving the "Hawaiian,” in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at New England for a race and while he didn't reach the finals, he did run a best of 6.69/207. Al qualified 14th at the 1975 NHRA Summernationals (Englishtown) with a 6.57/213.77 pass. But he was unable to run eliminations and first alternate Al Segrini took his place in the field. Notes: Dick had his new Camaro at OCIR for a best of three match raced against Fred Goeske in February. In their first race, Harrell fouled and slowed to a 9.13 loss. He came back to win the second race to even the match. But in the third race, he was slightly late off the line, and his 8.14/174.75 lost to Goeske's 8.17/171. He lost to Al Vanderwoulde in a match race at Kansas City on April 7. He went to OCIR on May 4 for the Funny Car Team Championships. He won his first-round race with an 8.17 but lost soon after and didn't reach the final. Vanderwoulde and Harrell had a rematch at Minneapolis a month later (May 12) that had Harrell come out on top. Both Al and Dick pulled wheelstands in their opening race, but Harrell won with a 9.37/170.13 to Vanderwoulde's 9.48. Harrell made two straight with his track record 8.01 at 184.04 over Al's 8.39/179. Dick set both ends of the track record at Detroit Dragway while winning the AHRA Grandnationals later in May. His final round 7.84/184.04 beat Dick Loehr's 8.16/160. He ended the month at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 7.99/178.92 beat Don Biggers. His 8.02/170.13 defeated Ron Leslie in the "High Country Cougar in the semifinal." He faced Larry Reyes, driving the "Super 'Cuda" in the final. The two had a great race, but Larry's 7.93/177 got the victory over Harrell's 8.03/182.54 (Top Speed) runner-up effort. Shortly after that (June 2), he was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, for a six-car show. All the cars were to make three runs. His 8.25/178 beat Ron O'Donnell's 8.25/173 in the "Mr. Norm" Charger in his first race. He ran his best time of the day, a 7.91/180, in winning his second-round match against Arnie Beswick. His only loss came in the third race, where Dick's 8.20/173 lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 7.76/180. Harrell ran 7.79/184.04 at Bristol, but on July 10 at Atco, he set both ends of the track record with 7.68/188.68. Also ran 7.68 at Detroit. Flip-top Camaro. Photo at New York International Speedway.

Notes: Qualified on the bump at the 1972 NHRA Supernationals with a 6.518. Lost to Danny Ongais in the first round. Ran 6.58 at Beech Bend. | The '72 version of the "Super Duster" used a 118" Don Hardy chassis. The transmission was a Lenco 2-speed that fed the power back to a Dana rear with 4.10 gears. The car weighed in at 1,875 lbs. Bill Taylor and former driver Larry Reyes built the 426 Hemi. It used a Reath crank that supported Brooks rods. The pistons were by Forged True. Lunati supplied the roller cam, the lifters, and the springs. Up top, the Bowers 6.71 blower sat on a Cragar manifold. Cragar was also the choice for the blower drive. The injection came from Enderle. The "Super Duster" of Taylor and Stanley Wolff was still in primer when it showed up at Miami-Hollywood on February 13 for the Winter Championships. Gary Henderson drove the car to a 6.95/182.92 on its first full pass. That was good enough to qualify low for the eight-car field. He made it into the final against Jim Liberman, but the car broke, and he had to watch as "Jungle Jim" soloed for the victory. The team was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Gary qualified #7, which was pretty good considering that almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but in the first round, he slowed to 7.33 that finished second best to Joe Jacono's 6.92. Early in April, he was at Chandler Raceway, Indiana, competing against Dale Pulde, Preston Davis, and the "Chi-Town Hustler" in a four-car match. He did not turn any outstanding times there, but on April 9, he won an eight-car show at St. Louis. An opening round 7.02 beat the "Phantom" Corvette driven by Paul Gordon, and in the semifinals, he beat Grover Rogers in the "Motivation" Mustang. He faced Rogers again in the final as Grover got back in on the "break rule," and Henderson set Low ET to win with a 6.91. He got another victory at Atco's Funny Car Championships run on April 23. There he set both ends of the track record with a 6.61/216.00. He stopped Bill Leavitt in the run for the money. He competed at the Connecticut Memorial Day Funny Car Championships, where he won his first-round race with a 7.06, but he lost soon after. Early in June, he was at Maple Grove for the Pennsylvania Dutch Classic. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Roy Harris in the "Frantic Ford," who was having his own problems and sputtered down the track with an 8.45 to win. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Gary qualified #11, but an off-pace 7.24 in round one, lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 6.73. The following week (June 18), he was at Rockford for the East-West Meet. A 7.07 qualified #4 there, but he failed to reach the finals. Henderson failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He was back at Connecticut for the Summer Funny Car Championship where his 7.15 beat Tony Wahlay's "Warlord" in the opening round, but in round two, he lost to Liberman. In August, the "Super Duster" was at Atco for the CARS Magazine Championships. Gary ran a 6.95/207.37 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to stop Leavitt, who ran a track record 6.47 at 219, to send Gary home. At the NHRA US Nationals at Indy, he lost to McCulloch in the first round, after qualifying #10 with a great 6.59/223.32. He was disappointed at New England's Funny Car Nationals, where the Duster broke in the first round. Dallas was the next stop for the IHRA Nationals. Gary’s 6.79 qualified #12, and he improved to 6.63 in the first round, to beat Billy Meyer. In round two, he thumped Connie Kalitta with a 6.66, but despite running a strong 6.61/214 in the semifinal, he lost to Dave Condit's 6.55/222 in the "L. A. Hooker."

Notes: Larson debuted his '70 Camaro on March 15 at York US 30 at a match race against Ken Safford in the Mr. Norm Charger. In his first race, he ran 177.12 that lost to Ken's 7.50. An improved 8.05/187.11 in the second race was still unable to beat the seasoned Charger's 7.44/189. And in the last race, the Camaro broke. York US 30 held an 8-car show on April 5. The finalists were based on the two rounds of competition, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Larson's 7.71/187.50 beat Arnie Beswick's 8.24/173 in the first round, and in round two, he fouled away a 7.71/185.95 opposite Charlie Allen. He still made the final due to his ETs, and there he laid down a 7.56 (Low ET) at 189.07 to beat Malcolm Durham's 7.64/191.89. A week later (April 12), he was at Columbus for a four-car show. In his first race, his 7.76/190.26 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster.” The second race had him up against Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Minick's 7.45/197 beat Larson's 7.71/190.26. In his final race, he faced Johnny Wright in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. Bruce's 7.59/193.12 beat Wright's off-pace 8.00/165. On April 26, he ran a match race at Englishtown against Ron Rivero. Both cars ran 7.79 in the first race, with Ron's slower speed of 185, getting the win over Larson's slightly faster 186.33. Unfortunately, Larson could not run due to his engine quitting after the one race, and Rivero took the match. Bruce ran the Super Stock Nationals but lost early both days. He went up to Cayuga Dragway in Canada for an eight-car show in May and finished runner-up. He had beaten Clare Sanders' 7.81/188 in the Super Camaro with a 7.67/191.48 and a semifinal 7.71/191.48 advanced when Don Schumacher broke on the line. In the final, he ran a good 7.59/194.88 but lost to Phil Castronovo's Low ET and Top Speed run of 7.52/196.92. Phil got him again at Connecticut for a 16-car show on May 31. This time, the two met in the first round, with the same results. Castronovo's 7.56/175 beat Bruce's off pace 8.45/184.42. On June 7, Larson was on his way to the final after setting Low ET with a 7.14 at the New England Spring Funny Car meet. Unfortunately, after a strong burnout, his transmission let go, and this reinstated Rowe with the break rule in effect. Maple Grove hosted a match race between Larson and Tommy Grove on June 27. Larson's 7.75/173.41 won the first race when Grove blew a head gasket. He then won the second race and the match when he beat the backup Corvair of Ken Poffenberger with a 7.65/181.80. Grove got his car fixed in time for the third race and blasted a 7.39/190 to beat Larson's 7.49/190.26. On July 5, Connecticut held a 16-car show. In the first round, Paula Murphy's 8.10/189 lost to Larson's 7.54/192.71. He had to race her again in the second round when she got back in on the break rule. This time a 7.45/189.47 beat Paula's 7.79/192. In the semifinal, a 7.81/186.72 lost to Paul Stefansky's 7.69/195. National Trail hosted a match race between Larson and Rowe. A holeshot-aided 7.67/187.88 beat Rowe's quicker 7.55/202 in the first race. In the second race, Rowe came back with a 7.47/192 to beat Bruce's 7.54/195.22. In the deciding match, Larson's 7.54/195.22 beat Rowe's better 7.53/195. He competed at the NHRA Summernationals on July 19. A 7.67/191.89 qualified #5. He won his first-round with a 7.81/192.71 over Poffenberger's 8.28/186. In the second round, his 7.74/193.13 was far behind Gene Snow's 7.32/207. The Chevy-powered cars were feeling the pinch as it was getting harder and harder to run against the Mopars, especially once they started stroking the Hemis. Bruce was holding out exceptionally well, but even his "Rat" motors were being hard-pressed. Budds Creek held an Funny Car show, and Larson managed to make it into the final. He had beaten Pee Wee Wallace with a 7.96/190 and an 8.05 beat Al Graeber in the second round. He lost to Larry Reyes' 7.35/196 in the semifinal but got back in on the break rule to face Reyes again in the final. Reyes took the win. Another runner-up finish came on July 25 at the 1/8 mile Sunset drag strip's Funny Car Nationals. Larson ran 5.04, 5.08, and a semifinal 5.05 over Stefansky's 5.49. In the final, he ran his best ET, a 5.01, but lost to Kelly Chadwick's 4.97 Low ET of the meet. Larson was back in New England on August 9 for a match race against Lew Arrington. Both cars were off in their first race, with Lew's 8.21/191 beating Bruce's 8.85/166. Lew won the match when he beat Larson in the second race with a 7.57/188 over the Camaro's 8.1/183. Maple Grove held a 16-car show in August, and once again, Bruce was runner-up, this time to Leroy Goldstein in the Ramchargers Challenger. Larson really made the Chevy fans stand up and cheer at the NHRA Nationals. He was the only non-Mopar-powered qualifier with a 7.24 that held on for the "bump spot." He beat Tom McEwen's 7.21 in the first round, with a career-best 7.17/205. He improved his all-time best in the second round to a 7.161/205.94 while beating Bobby Wood's 7.22. All good things have to come to an end when in the semifinals, he fouled against Goldstein. Larson was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. It was an eight-car show, and he beat Pete Hill in the first round, with a 7.69. A better 7.46 in the semifinals lost to Jim Liberman's 7.31. On September 20, he was at Epping for the fourth annual New England Funny Car Championships. It was a 32 car show, and Larson beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round, with a 7.66/202. In the second round, a 7.36/199.50 beat Paul Stefansky's Mustang, but in round three, he lost to Larry Reyes in the "Super Duster."

Notes: Tom started the '74 season by qualifying #4 in the sixteen-car field at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race on January 12 with a 6.57. His first-round 6.64/203.16 beat Joe Lee, but he and Gordon Swearingen, driving Jim Terry's Mustang, both broke in round two. McEwen's coasting 14.95 lost to Swearingen's 12.77. Another 6.57 qualified #13 at the AHRA Winternationals. He improved to a 6.49/225.00 in the first round to beat Richard Tharp's 6.50/204. In the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.47/195. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's best of 6.70/215.31 failed to qualify, and to add insult, he crashed into the safety net during qualifying. Early in March, he was at Fresno Dragway for its Winter Race of Champions event. It was an eight-car show, and Tom qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. Tom lost their race with a 6.71, but the "Ace" did not get an ET on his run. He won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 31, beating McCulloch in the final with a 6.41/212. In getting there, he ran a 6.50 over Mike Van Sant's 6.66 in the "Hawaiian," a single (6.43) over Don Schumacher, who had lost fire, and a semifinal 6.42 over an out of shape Danny Ongais. It was a strong showing for the "Goose." In mid-April, he had one of the 30 FCs competing at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. Clarence Bailey broke against him in the opening round, and Tom advanced with a 6.91/187.61. He also got a solo in round two, but he hurt the engine during his run and could not return. The following was (April 27), he was at Seattle for the fifth annual Northwest Open. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified #6. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round and shut down against Kenny Goodell. Tom ran 6.705/215.31 at Pomona, 6.624/220.58 at Columbus, 6.620/216.34 at Englishtown, 6.474/231.36 at Indy, and 6.515/229.00 at NHRA Ontario 10/74.

Notes: Sunday October 12/1975: The "Snake" makes history on a pit lane drag strip no less, at Ontario: 5.987 at 237.46 in the semis against Raymond Beadle at the Winston World Finals. Also went 241.53 for the sport's first 240 fuel FC. - Ricko. | Strange thing about the 241. It was not possible on the 3 decimal clocks of the day, which only displayed 241.28 and 241.93. It is likely that Prudhomme actually ran 241.93, but the clock was misread as 241.53. Inaugural member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. Won 6 of 8 NHRA National events in '75 - biggest loss was Indy to Beadle and the Blue Max. | Started the '75 season with the 'Cuda, but the Monza debuted at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Things didn't start so well for the Monza. First off, the tow rig broke down outside of Phoenix and had to be towed in. Then once it arrived, Don went to make the car's first pass ever and the rear end broke. After getting it fixed, he ran a 6.40 to qualify #3. He lasted until round two where the Monza got crossed up and lost to Billy Meyer driving Gene Snow's Vega. With the bad luck behind him, Don towed into Pomona for the Winternationals where he ran a 6.25/228.42 to qualify #2. In the first round, he beat Meyer's tire smoking 8.15 with a 6.39/189.87. In round two, a 6.37 beat Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's potent Mustang. In the semifinals, a 6.28/212.76 beat Charlie Therwhanger in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. He picked up his first win of the year with the Monza with a 6.24/226.70 in the final over Mike Miller who broke in Jim Green's "Green Elephant" Vega. On March 2, Prudhomme shocked everyone when he laid down a 6.08/235.60 to qualify first at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. The times were good for Low ET and Top Speed as well as new track records. But after qualifying, his times weren't so good. He singled in the first round, with an easy pass when Gary Burgin's Mustang II broke. In round two, a 6.51/212 beat Leroy Chadderton's quicker 6.48/222. A tire smoking 7.91 in the semifinals beat John Lombardo. And in the final, he ran a 7.17/141.28 to take the runner-up spot to Dale Pulde's 6.53/196 in the "Eastern Raider" Mustang II. At Gainesville for the Gatornationals, Don got the pole with a 6.39 (Low ET) at 205.47. Tommy Grove's Mustang lost to Prudhomme's 6.61 in the first round, and Tom Raley's Vega lost to the Monza's 6.53/198.23 in round two. A semifinal 6.87/167 advanced to the finals when Shirl Greer got out of shape. In the final, Don got his second NHRA national event win of the year with a 6.52/172.74 getting the win over Tom Prock whose "Custom Body" Dart broke a rear end. Portland held the Seattle Opener and Prudhomme made it into the final before losing to Ed McCulloch. At the NHRA Division 6 Opener on May 31 at Seattle, Don qualified #1, set Low ET, and won the race over McCulloch who broke in the final. Don went 3 for 3 at NHRA's third national event of the year, the Springnationals at National Trail. He ran Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 and then ran 6.31/200.44 over Jim Liberman's 6.59, a 6.40/219.51 over Jim Nicoll's 6.56, and a 6.84 over Greer in the semifinals when they both smoked the tires. In the final he ran Raymond Beadle behind the wheel of the "Blue Max." It was an interesting final when the "Max" had its Mustang II body come unhinged and blow off shortly after leaving the line. Don went on to score a 6.46 victory. Beadle got back at Prudhomme at the third Division 3 race at Cincinnati when he beat Don in the final with a 6.43/219 over the Monza's 7.19/147.29. He was runner-up at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 21 as well. He qualified #1 with a 6.53 and made his way into the final to run Harlan Thompson in the "Fireball Vega. Harlan ran a Low ET and Top Speed 6.36/222 to beat Prudhomme for the victory. He lost his first NHRA national event of the year at the Summernationals on July 13. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.22/205.01. But in the first round, he got crossed up and shut off to a 9.55/89.46 against Tom McEwen. Don wasn't down long as he picked up his fourth NHRA National event win of the season at the Grandnationals in Canada on August 16. Once again, he qualified #1 with a 6.46/207.37. He beat Burgin in the first round, with a 6.47/212.26 and in the semifinal, a 6.59/222.22 beat Bob Pickett. In the final he ran Prock again. Don set Low ET in the final with a 6.45/224.43 getting the win. He won the fourth Division 1 race at Maryland International, as a final round 6.79/225.00 (Top Speed) beat Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" Mustang II. Another win was added to his long list when he won the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Michigan. He qualified #1 with a 6.28/233.76 then ran 6.12/213.27 to beat Greer's Mustang II in the first round. A semifinal 6.28/220.04 beat Denny Savage in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the final he ran a 6.12/222.77 to beat Vic Cecelia's 6.35/225 in Charlie Proite's "Telstar." Prudhomme and Beadle staged their own little war at the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. They qualified #1 and second with Don's 6.17/232.55 (Top Speed) getting the #2 spot. In the first round, Don beat Ron O'Donnell in the "Damn Yankee" with a 6.16. In the second round, a 6.21 beat Pulde's 6.94 in the "Arizona Wildcat" and in the semifinals, a 6.45 beat Pickett's tire smoking 7.89 in Mickey Thompson's car. In the final, Prudhomme got beat. Raymond shot to a 6.16/226 for the win over the "Snake's" 6.26/224.44. After that, Don went to Portland International for the NHRA Division 6 final. He qualified #1 with a 6.44/196.50 and advanced past the first-round with a 6.69/175.78 when Miller broke in the "Green Elephant." A semifinal 6.20/193.96 beat Rich Rogers and in the final, he unleashed Low ET with a 6.12/211.76 getting the win over Gordie Bonin.

Notes: By '72, Chevy-powered FCs were done. Therwhanger had put up a good fight in '71, but the new "stroker" Hemis had no problem putting away the Chevy-powered cars. The "Rat" motored cars were lucky just to qualify. Just don't tell that to Therwhanger. He had Pete Bagnard build him a new Vega that sat on a 115" chassis. Charlie knew how to build big-inch Chevy engines, and the 440 that powered his car was based on a truck block. The internals included Arias 6:1 pistons and a Howards cam. Up top sits a 30% overdriven GMC 6/71 built by Air Research. The 90% nitro load was fed to the motor by a Crower eight-hole injector. The power was transferred to the 3.90 rear by a two-speed Lenco transmission. Charlie was at Green Valley Raceway in May for the AHRA Nationals. In the opening round, he lost a blower against Don Schumacher. He also ran at the New England Open but lost early. Early in June, he was at Dallas for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. Charlie had the only Chevy-powered car to qualify as he ran 7.27 for the #14 spot. Unfortunately, the parachute fell out on the line in the first round, and Dale Pulde soloed into round two. A couple of days later, he was at Capitol Raceway for the Mr. Chevrolet race. But he had more bad luck there as he broke against Charlie Wilson in the first round. In July, he raced at Atco for its Funny Car Championships, but he lost to eventual winner Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" in the opening round. He went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals but was the sixth alternate (times unavailable). He also lost to Tharp in the first round, at the IHRA Empire Nationals. He qualified #7 on the Western team and #17 overall at the Amarillo World Finals (times unavailable). He hit the guard rail and lost to Butch Maas in round one. Charles was a DNQ at the Ontario World Finals.

Notes: Wayne Gapp was one of the few Pro Stock racers that was able to make the Boss 429 run. It would have been interesting to see what he could have done with this combination if NHRA hadn't given the mini-cars the breaks they did for '73. The car just got stronger and stronger as the season progressed. He qualified #13 with a 9.90 at the AHRA Winternationals, but a blown rear end halted him in round two. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13, and again lost in round two. At the NHRA Springnationals, Gapp failed to qualify. He was at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event where he lost to the eventual winner Joe Satmary in round two. It was also Satmary who stopped Gapp in the final of the UDRA circuit race at Saginaw. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals. In July he was as York US 30 for the USRT American Challenge race. An easy 10.06 advanced over a broken Hubert Platt in the qualifying round, but his ET failed to get him into eliminations. Melvin Yow's 9.77 stopped Wayne's 9.88 in the first round, at the NHRA Summernationals. At the IHRA Summernationals, a 9.71 qualified Gapp #11 and in round one, a 9.75/145.63 wasn't enough to stop Stuart McDade. He was back at National Trail for the USRT race where he qualified for second place honors. A 9.71/141.99 lost in the semifinal to Dave Strickler's Vega at 9.67. Edgewater hosted an eight-car show in August and all the cars ran three races. Wayne lost to Bill Jenkins in his first race and he ran his best time in round three where the Maverick's 9.71 beat Arlen Vanke's 9.75. The next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA National Challenge race. He didn't qualify so well there as his 10.18/134.93 got him the #28 position in the 32 car field. Best NHRA times for this combination was a 9.828/142.40 at the Pomona Winters.

Notes: AKA the Juana Taxi. Four-door long-wheelbase car had 100 lb. weight advantage. Ran 8.78 at Winters after qualifying #1 at 8.81. Lost final round to a Glidden holeshot, 8.79 to Wayne's 8.78. Ran 8.94/153.06 at IHRA Bristol June 1975. Was that in this car or the Mustang II? Won Indy 1975 over Zul in this car. | Gapp continued to run his trick four-door Maverick into '75. The season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January Gapp's 8.97 qualified #2 behind Bob Glidden's 8.96. Unfortunately, Wayne fouled in the first round, against Joe Satmary. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, an 8.81/154.37 qualified #1, just in front of Glidden's 8.82. These two would work their way to the finals. In early Sunday morning time trials, Wayne improved to 8.79. No one else was able to run 8.7's that morning as the closest was Glidden's 8.81. Gapp's first-round 8.81/154.63 beat Larry Huff's Mopar at 9.16/148. A second-round 8.89/154.37 took out Wally Booth's 8.98/152 and in the semifinals, he almost lost with clutch problems. His opponent, Bill Jenkins, helped out by fouling. This put the two long-wheelbase Fords in the final. It was as close as it could get as Gapp's 8.78/154.37 lost by inches to Bob's slower 8.79/154. These same two would qualify one-two at the NHRA Gatornationals with Glidden's 8.76 leading Gapp's 8.76/153.84. Once again, they would meet in the final. Gapp beat Kenny Hahn in the first round, with an 8.88/152.54 and in round two his 8.87 advanced when Reid Whisnant fouled. He slowed to 8.91/153 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Dave Kanners' AMC at 8.95/151. Once again, the two long-wheelbase cars squared off. And again, the results were the same. They both ran 152.80, but Glidden was sharp on the lights and his 8.96 beat Gapp's quicker 8.89. The NHRA Division 4 Opener was held at LaPlace and the "Taxi" dominated the event. Gapp qualified #1 with an 8.95 (Low ET) and ran 8.98 twice to reach the final. Kelly Chadwick was his final round opponent and a 9.06/150 got the victory over Chadwick's 9.23/146. In match races and at the IHRA Winternationals, the Gapp and Roush team used a Pinto, but at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo in April, Gapp was in the Maverick. He set Low ET and Top Speed and in the final, he faced Don Nicholson. Gapp ran an 8.76 to get the victory over "Dyno's" 8.85. The Pinto was used for the next couple of IHRA events before Gapp was back behind the wheel at the NHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with an 8.94/151.51. (For a change, Glidden was not second; Kanners’ Hornet was at 8.99). Mike Fons fouled against him in the first round, and Wayne advanced with a 9.01/151.00. In the second round, Warren Johnson got a great light and his 9.13/149 held on to win over the Maverick's quicker 9.10/149.25. The car’s next outing was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Gapp qualified #1 with an 8.89/152.28 and then ran 8.96/152.62 to beat Roy Hill's 8.99/152 in the first round. A second-round 9.03/150.00 beat the Pontiac Astre of Bert Straus at 9.18/151. In the semifinals, he picked up the pace to an 8.84/153.32 over Kanners. That put him into the final against Jenkins. Gapp capped off the weekend by setting Low ET with an 8.80 at 154.63 to win over Jenkins' 8.93/154. Another win came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Again, Gapp was low in qualifying with an 8.98. His times kept improving with an 8.94/153.06 in the first round, to trailer Sam Gianino. He ran a solo in round two and recorded an 8.93/149.53. Richie Zul fouled against him in the semifinals and Gapp set Low ET with an 8.86/150.00. He faced Kanners in the final and an 8.91/152.28 got him the victory over Kanners' 9.00/151. On August 16, Gapp was driving the Maverick at Maryland International for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He beat Booth in the final with an 8.90/147.05 to the AMC's 8.97/149. At the PHR Championships, Gapp wasn't one of the top two qualifiers. He was back in the #4 spot with an 8.89. This was unusual, but what was even more unusual was his first-round race against Larry Ford. Gapp ran 8.97/151.51 and lost to Larry's 9.25/144! That was more than a little snooze on the line. But that trailed the Maverick in the first round. Gapp made up for it at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.85, and he made his way to the semifinals of the 32 car field where he faced a strong running Booth. Booth had reset the NHRA Pro Stock record to 8.75 in qualifying #1. Wally must have been a little nervous facing Gapp, and he fouled away an 8.80 while Wayne motored into the final with an 8.87. In the final, he ran Zul's big-block Camaro. Zul ran 8.95/151, but Gapp took the victory with an 8.83/153.32. At this point in the season, the points chase seemed to be between Gapp and Booth. Shortly after Indy, the final NHRA Division 3 race was held at Bowling Green Kentucky. Gapp qualified #1 and made it to the final against Glidden. Any time these two ran, it was bound to be close and this was no exemption. Gapp's 8.91/153.58 finished runner-up to Bob's 8.90/154. The following week, NHRA was at Seattle for the Fallnationals. The end of the season was starting to look like it had in the beginning, with Glidden and Gapp qualifying one-two. Gapp's 8.748/154.90 qualified behind Bob's new NHRA record 8.72. Of course, these two would meet in the final. Mardy Maltais fouled against Gapp in the first round, and a 9.99/104.04 advanced into round two. This was not so easy as the Maverick lost an engine on the run and the team swapped in another one for round two. There, Gapp's 8.83/153.06 beat Lee Hunter's 9.01/151. In the semifinals, Huff fouled against him and an 8.90-51.77 moved into the final. Bob was starting to eat his way back into the points race and his final 8.84/155 beat Wayne's close 8.85/153.06.

Notes: Swept both IHRA races at Bristol in 76. Won Springs with an 8.68 at 154.63, then won the All Americans at Bristol with an 8.65 at 156.25. Set National Record at 156.25 at NHRA Gators. Ran 155.44 at NHRA Pomona Winters. | Bob was not happy with the NHRA's Pro Stock weight breaks for '76. The 351 powered Fords were carrying a lot more weight compared to the '75 season. More weight meant more breakage of parts. Glidden started the season at the Phoenix Winter Classic on January 25. He qualified #2 with an 8.90 and lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's four-door Maverick. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, these two would meet again only this time in the final. Bob qualified #3 with an 8.80 and he beat Wally Booth and Roy Hill in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he came up against low-qualifier Bill Jenkins. Bob got a bit of luck when Jenkins fouled away an 8.77/153 while Glidden advanced with an 8.86/155.70. Gapp and Glidden met in their ninth NHRA final. Glidden got his ninth NHRA National event victory with an 8.82/155.70 beating Wayne's 8.91/153. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.78 qualified #3. He scored an easy first-round win and then beat Lee Edwards in the second round with an 8.87/154.63. In the semifinals, he met Jenkins' Monza again, only this time it was Larry Lombardo behind the wheel. Bob tried hard, but his 8.83 was no match for the Monza's 8.74. He did leave with a new NHRA speed record of 156.52. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #4 and in the first round, his 8.89/152.28 beat Shelby Jester in Andy White's Monza. An 8.92/152.02 beat Bob Ingles' 9.12/147 in round two while another 8.92 at 153 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.83/153 in the semifinals. While Bob wasn't happy with the NHRA side of things he was dominating on the IHRA circuit. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the Summernationals in July. Glidden's 8.77 qualified #7. He made it into the second round where his 8.87 lost to Wally Booth's 8.73. Best NHRA ET was 8.772 at the Summers.

Notes: Former S/S. Photo from Maple Grove PA 1970. Can-Am block. Grump definitely had this car at Ontario, but did he start racing it as soon as Indy? We are listing it that way. He qualified #2 there but broke on the burnout against Dave Strickler in round one.

Notes: This car never ran Pro Stock and was only raced as a heads up match racer. Don raced the car for 6 months between April and September 1969. While researching the Dyno Don book, I found the quickest times for the Cougar were a 9.99 at 138 mph recorded during a match race at Thompson, Ohio in September.
