Notes: After driving the successful "Super Ford" Torino in '68 and '69, Foster had this new 118" Logghe built Mustang for '70. The car used a stock displacement 427 SOHC with M/T rods and pistons. A pair of Joe Lunati cams were also used with the stock heads and valve train. Up top, a Cragar intake manifold supported the 20% overdriven GMC 6/71 blower. Enderle injectors were used. A Coleman and Taylor prepared C-6 transferred the estimated 1,500 hp back to the Detroit Locker with 3.70 gears. The Mustang weighed in at 2,180 lbs. Cammer-powered Mustang set a short-lived track record at Gainesville at 7.296 (193.13) on February 13 for the Gatornats. The record was beaten the same day by Larry Arnold. On April 12, Foster was at Delmar for a match race against Charlie Allen. Sid had handling problems in their first race, and his 11.54/168.66 lost to Allen, who blew a transmission at 10.22/125. The Mustang lost a transmission in the second race and slowed to 10.32/78.12 to lose to the Dodge's 8.01/188. Sid blew his engine in the final race, and Allen ran 7.94/182 to win three straight. He then went to Connecticut for another match race. This time he was up against Jimmy King, who was driving Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette. Both had problems on their first run, but Foster's 8.43/178.57 beat the 'Vette's 9.61/160. King fouled in the second race, and Sid saw it, so he coasted through for the win. In the final race, the Mustang broke while Jimmy ran a great 7.64/189. Sid took on "Jungle Jim" Liberman in a best of three match at a 1,000-foot track late in May. In the first race, the Mustang lost second gear and the race. In their second race, JJ took the win. They decided to run the third race anyway, and Liberman fouled while Foster got the win with a 6.14. Near the end of May, he was at Huntsville, Alabama, for a match race against Shirl Greer. In the first race, Shirl's 7.45 held off Sid's 203.77 top-end charge. In the second race, Greer broke, and Foster's 7.50/204.66 got the win. Greer could not return for the final race, so Sid soloed with a 7.42/205.87 for the match race win. - RH | Sid was the first alternate at the NHRA Springnationals (times unavailable). Columbus and Gainesville were his only two NHRA national events this year. Sidney also ran 6.18 at 1,000 feet at Humboldt IA 9/70 | Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. – RT |

Notes: Hoover's first funny car. Woody Gilmore chassis, Fiberglass Trends Challenger body. Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. | After running a SOHC Ford-powered Top Fuel dragster for the last couple of seasons, Tom switched to FC's for '70. It was definitely a learning experience. His first time out with the car came at Irwindale shortly before the NHRA Winternationals. The first time they lowered the body, he was claustrophobic; he "got over that weird feeling after a few runs." He failed to qualify the car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals but had transmission trouble in the first round and lost to Frank Federici in the "Shark." Tom had one of only two FCs that showed up at NHRA's third Division 5 race held at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD. Unfortunately, in their run for the money, his 8.13/187.50 lost to Art Ward's 8.05/175. He competed at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where all cars were to run three rounds. He fouled (8.16) in his first race, but a 7.47 in his second race beat Marc Susman in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car. He also won his third race with a strong 7.28/206.42. He had a bad day in August at Minnesota Dragways. It was a four-car race, and he soloed in his first race with a 7.55/197.36 when John Collins, who was now driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car lost fire. Hoover was to race Bryan Teal in the "Super Chief" in his second race, but while backing up from his burnout, Tom's brakes failed. He tried to stop the car by swerving it into the sand that ran alongside the track. Everyone got out of the way except for one boy who escaped with just some bruises. He repaired the brakes in time to make a final run against Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. Safford lost a rod on their run, and Tom's 7.34/200.89 got the win. His next stop was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. An opening round 7.99/164.23 got past Bob Sullivan's ailing Camaro, and in round two, his 7.67/187.10 beat Dick Harrell's 7.94/184. In the semifinals, Don Prudhomme's 7.18/204 sent Hoover's 7.56/198.96 packing. Hoover ran a career-best since joining the Funny Car ranks of 7.048/209 in qualifying #7 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A first-round 7.209/204.54 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.22/206 in the "Super Duster." A National Dragster article stated that he had run a best of 6.90 this season. Tom's known best IHRA ET was a 7.04 at Rockingham. |

Notes: Bryan was at Minnesota Dragway on May 31 for an eight-car show. He lost to Tommy Grove's 7.32/196 in the first round, with a 7.60/181.45, but got back into the show on the "break rule." He made it into the final, facing Grove's Mustang again. Once again, the results were the same, but it was a little closer, with his 7.47/196.06 finishing runner-up to Grove's 7.44/193. The following week (June 7), he was at Tri-City for another eight-car show. He pulled a wheelstand in the first round and lost. He ran a strong 7.21/202.70 in his second race to beat Charlie Allen's 7.40/199. Teal didn't have a very good day at the Funny Car Championships at Martin, Michigan. All the cars there made three runs. In his first race, he crossed the centerline and lost to Pat Foster, driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" Maverick. He got out of shape in his second race and clicked it early to a 9.94 loss to Grove's 7.35/205. In his third race, he lost to Larry Arnold. In July, Teal was at Suffolk for the Tidewater Funny Car Meet. The car still had handling problems, as in the first round, he crossed the centerline against Phil Castronovo. In his second race, his 7.62/168.85 lost to Lew Arrington's "Brutus" at 7.53/190. He got it squared away enough to run a 7.54/175.78 in his third race to beat Malcolm Durham's 8.03/182. Bryan made it into the final at an eight-car show at Edgewater. He beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 7.58/180 in the first round, with a 7.46/182.18, and in the semifinals, Grove got out of shape and had to shut down while Teal ran 7.60/154.10 to advance into the final. There, he faced Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Teal smoked the tires while Minick set Low ET and Top Speed, winning at 7.32/201.46. He was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. All eighteen cars ran the first round as qualifiers, with the lowest eight ETs getting to run in round two. Bryan's 7.32/206.89 qualified, but in round two, his 7.41/180.00 lost to eventual winner Minick's 7.26/199. Late in August, he was at Minnesota Dragways for a four-car show. A first-round 7.58/181.08 lost to Kenny Safford's 7.17/207 in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the second race, Teal soloed with a 7.54/168.22 when Tom Hoover lost his brakes. In his last race, he made his best pass, a 7.38/210.28, but he was slow off the line and lost to John Collins' 7.41/209 (Atlas Oil Tool Special). In early September, Tri-City held an eight-car show that had Teal's 7.47/161.57 lose to Roger Lindamood's 7.26/202 in the first round. He then went to Iowa for the Humboldt County Funny Car Championships. It was a 1,000-foot track. He lost to eventual winner Mike Burkhart in the first round, then returned on the "break rule" only to lose with a 6.29 to Paula Murphy's 6.21. He frequented US 131 at Martin, Michigan, quite a bit as he was back there for another eight-car show. He ran really well, beating Gary Bolger with a 7.42/199.11, and in the second round, his 7.33/199.55 beat Larry Reyes' 7.51/199 in the "Hawaiian." He went up against Leroy Goldstein, driving the "Ramchargers" Challenger in the final. Unfortunately, it wasn't close; Goldstein's 7.04/206 got the money over Teal's 7.51/170.77. Minnesota held a Labor Day Funny Car race, and Bryan was there, but an off-pace 8.63/144 in the opening round lost to Terry Hedrick's 8.34/131 in the "Super Shaker." At Suffolk for the Dixie Drag Classic, he ran a best of 7.38/208.80 but failed to reach the final. He went up against Fred Goeske on September 19 at Maple Grove for a best-of-three-match race. He won the first race with a 7.30/204.30 over Fred's 7.64/196, but in the second race, Goeske won, but he blew the engine, and the car turned into a fireball. Fred ended up with some burns around his neck, and he and the car were done for the day. Teal soloed with a 7.33/205.96 for the match win. The speed was a new track record. Notes: Clare had nothing but problems went he showed up at Miami-Hollywood on February 22 for a best-of-three-match race against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster." Not only did Sanders lose all three races, but his best pass was also only a 9.02/95.54 shut-off run. His first run was an out-of-shape 9.29/167.91, while his last was another bad handling 12.51/144.00. Rowe won the match with a 7.46 best. In mid-May, he was at Capitol Raceway for its Mr. Chevrolet race. Ten cars ran the first round, and his 7.96/187.88 advanced when Bruce Larson fouled. In round two, his off-pace 8.60/190.26 lost to eventual winner Kelly Chadwick's 7.67/182. Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. |
