Notes: Menacing and hunkered down, this chopped, full-fendered coupe ran in the Fuel Coupe class years before the term FUEL altereds came into use. When the NHRA instituted the fuel ban in 1957, Montgomery sold the Deuce and built a '41 Willys B/gasser that he ran from 1959/72. - RT; Photo: Pomona Progress Bulletin, June 4, 1955 - MB |

Notes: He turned 113.92 mph at Bakersfield on July 11. He set a new track record at Pomona on Nov. 14 of 114.94 mph. Newspapers recorded him turning 120.16 mph at Pomona on Aug. 22, indicating that he may have been using a supercharger then, as all his other speeds during the year were below 115 mph. Notes: On May 6 at Pomona, the dragster, formerly powered by an Ardun-Merc run by Bob Armstrong and Hal Williams, debuted with a new 341 Chrysler Hemi engine and a new co-owner, Maurice Richer. For that race, it was called Armstrong-Richer & Williams. Armstrong drove it to a Top Eliminator win at 141.28 mph-ten miles per hour quicker than it had been doing with the Mercury motor. Williams dropped out of the picture in the ensuing weeks, and the car was just called Armstrong & Richer; no more Williams. Sometime in the following weeks, Armstrong and Richer Got sponsored by a popular California bottled soft drink-Nesbitt's Orange. At the July 4th San Gabriel "Dragorama" race, the Nesbitt's Orange Special took a Top Eliminator victory, with Armstrong driving. The time was 11.9 at 145.23 mph. Armstrong and Richer traded off driving the car during the '56 season, both doing equally well. On July 8 at San Gabriel, Richer became the eighth man in drag racing history to turn 150 mph. He turned exactly 150.00 mph, setting a new track record, but blew a clutch early in eliminations. On September 1 at Colton, Richer turned 151.25 mph. Two days later, at Lions, he won Top Eliminator at the Drag Racers, Inc. World Championships with a best clocking of 10.34 at 151.25 mph. At the 2-day Lions 1st-year anniversary race on Oct. 27/28, Richer ran a best of 10.10 and 150.50 mph. At the 2-day Grand National Challenge Drags at Bakersfield on Nov. 3/4, Richer set Low ET of the meet with 9.44 at 155.20 mph. On December 2 at Colton, he set a track record at 151.00 mph with a time of 9.97. A week later, he copped Top Eliminator at Lions with best clockings of 10.06 and 149.00 mph. Photo: Pomona Progress Bulletin, March 1, 1957 - MB | Bret Kepner confirms Maurice was the 8th over 150 at San Gabe on July 8 - 150.00. |
