Notes: Chrysler dominated the Funny Car ranks in '71, and the Chevy campaigners were having a really tough time keeping up. Chadwick was loyal to the Chevrolet cause and refused to switch to a Hemi. His performance was hurting for most of the season, but he turned the quickest time for Chevy-powered cars near the end of the year. The Camaro was built at Don Hardy's shop, and it had a 118" wheelbase. The body was a product of JE Fiberglass. Chadwick and his crew chief, Ray Sullins, put together the 427 Chevy engine. As much as he was a Chevy supporter, Chadwick did run a Mopar rear end with 4.56 gears. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but failed to better the 7.30 "bump." Kelly was one of four Funny Cars running at the Amarillo Opener in March. On an early check-out pass, he warmed up with a 7.23. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, but his 7.53/184.04 lost to Snow's 7.02/209. In his second race, he ran Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max.” Once again, he lost. Another four-car race was run at Southland. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, who was debuting his new Charger. Chadwick's 7.35/187.11 beat Snow's new car blues at 8.19/128. Unfortunately, the run cost Kelly a rear axle, and he was done for the day. Also, early in the year, Chadwick faced Art Ward driving the "Avenger" Challenger in a best of three match at Cornhusker. He had problems in the first race and shut off on the line, but he came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.36 and 7.46 with a best speed of 196.07. He was at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships in May. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.14/190 in the first round, beat Sam Miller's 7.29/207. Chadwick fouled against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" in the semifinals. But Rowe burnt some pistons and could not run the final, so Chadwick got back into the show. He faced another Chevy-powered car in the final, Bruce Larson's. Kelly ran 7.31/177 for the victory when Larson blew a transmission. Chadwick was running really well at Oswego on August 8 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. He ran three 6.8's to win the event. He was at Bristol on August 29 for the IHRA All-American race, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. Kelly was Low ET qualifier with a 6.734 at OCIR's annual Manufacturer's Meet. He ran several more 6.70s during Saturday night eliminations, but parts breakage kept him from having a chance at making the finals. Won NHRA Division 3 event at Bowling Green on 9/19/71 when Al Marshall crossed the centerline in the final.
