Notes: Smyser's "Terrifying Toronado" was a contemporary of the Hurst Hairy Olds exhibition machine, and by all accounts lived up to the "terrifying" part of its name. Handshakes with the guardrail were reportedly a regular occurrence, from the debut ('66 AHRA Winternationals) to the final appearance ('67 NHRA Winternationals). Like the Hurst car a separate supercharged Olds mill drove each of the axles. Smyser's Toronado differed in that the front engine utilized a Toronado-like FWD Turbo-Hydro trans, while the back one drove through a conventional Olds rear end via a dual-disc clutch (direct drive). - RT |

Notes: Won A/XS at the 67 Winternationals. Also, set the A/XS record at 8.61/171.10 at Phenix City, Alabama, on 4/01/67. Hubert started his season at Houston on January 15 for a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay's "Infinity" GTO. Late in '66, Platt set the track record at 8.48, so he hoped to improve on it. The Mustang's brakes failed in the first race, and he could not stage the car. Gay made an easy solo for the win. After fixing the brakes, the two came out for their second race, and Platt was late off the line. Although he reset the track record with an 8.45, he lost to the Pontiac's 8.55. Platt ran really well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran in A/XS, and he ran a best of 8.49/171.42. He was to race Dick Loehr's similar Mustang for class honors, but Loehr's car broke. Hubert was at Lakeland on March 5 for a best two out of three match race against Eddie Schartman. Platt won the first race with a 9.59/159.01 to Ed's 9.72/151, but Schartman came back to win the next two races and the match. Platt had fouled in both remaining races running a best of 8.82/162.74. Another match race was run at Detroit on March 12 against Roger Lindamood's "Color Me Gone" Charger. Hubert won this match two straight with a best of 9.12/168. At the end of April (30), he ran Lew Arrington's "Brutus" at Aquasco and beat him two straight with runs of 8.39/166.97 and 8.74/161.57. Holman-Moody chassis? |

Notes: Edmunds started the year at Bakersfield on January 2 for a Jackpot Circuit race. He got out of shape against Tommy Allen in the first round and lost. At Lions on February 26 for the UDRA Winternationals, a 7.65/200.00 qualified John eighth, but he failed to make it into the finals. He won at Half Moon Bay on March 13, running a 7.85 in the final. John ran 7.75/203.16 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/66. He was at Carlsbad for the NHRA Division Seven opener on April 3 but lost early. Fremont held a race on April 24 where Edmunds was runner-up to Don Cook. Another runner-up finish came on May 1 at Half Moon Bay for the next NHRA Division Seven race. There, his 8.04 in the final lost to Jim Dunn's 7.94. On May 22 at Sacramento for an NHRA Division 7 race, he qualified fourth with an 8.04/194.88 but failed to make the finals. At the HRM Championships, a third-round 7.62 beat Connie Swingle's quicker 7.46. In the semi, Tom McEwen's 7.67 beat John's close 7.70/206.42. A week later, on August 14, he won again, this time at Bonneville for an NHRA Division 7 points race. He set Low ET at 7.80 and beat a fouling Dave Beebe in the final with a 7.81. On September 14 at Irwindale for the Division 7 final, he ran a first-round 7.61/200.88 over Tommy Allen, a second-round 7.59/197 advanced to the semi's where he fouled against Rick Stewart. On October 22, he ran a first-round 7.71/207.84 over Tommy Dyer at Irwindale's Grand Prix, but he failed to make the finals. On November 19 at Irwindale, a 7.48/201.78 qualified fifth in an eight-car show. He made it to the final before losing to Hank Westmoreland's 7.37/214. A final race was run on December 26 at Irwindale, the UDRA Championships, and John's 7.53/205.00 qualified #14. A first-round 7.44/194 from Mike Snively in the Hawaiian ended Edmunds' '66 season. Notes: This was a Bill Thomas race car. Sold to Denny Syar in 1967. Dick Harrell and his '66 Chevy II were famous match racers in the early funny car wars. This was Harrell's second match bash Chevy II. Chevrolet's Chevy II was supposed to be an economy car, but became Chevy's best competition for Ford's Mustang on the nation's drag strips. The injected big block 396 Chevrolet was not the perfect engine for racing, but Harrell made do. Dick ran the engine on low levels of nitro. Harrell was still based out of Albuquerque, New Mexico at the time. Nickey Chevrolet, the famed high performance car dealer, sponsored the lightweight Chevy II. Harrell ran a known best of 9.44 at 144 with the little car. - BS | Dick was at Fremont on April 25 for a best of five match race against Hubert Platt and his SOHC powered Mustang. Harrell won three straight with times of 9.96/141.06, a 9.98/145.39 and a 9.69/144.69. Platt was having trouble with his "Georgia Shaker" and could not get out of the ten second bracket on this day. ET Cordova IL 1966 (6/24/66 Drag News) MPH Green Valley 1966 (9/09/66 Drag World) | Dick Harrell. March 1966 Bakersfield. Funny cars ran in two classes. Harrell's car was one of three entries in the "2600 lb." class. The others were Kelly Chadwick and Del Heinelt in 'Seaton's Shaker'. Del ran a 10.14 @149.18 to defeat Chadwick, and raced Harrell in the final. Harrell won with a 9.98 @145.86 to the Shaker's 10.41 139.36. Paul Hutchins |

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis, and a 426 Chrysler Hemi powered the car on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198.46, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196.69. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info courtesy James Ibusuki). | Reyes raced Ed Schartman on March 3 at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race. He took the win by winning the first two races with 8.22 and 8.27 times. In the last race, Schartman won with an 8.35. On April 7, Reyes had a tough best of three match against Tommy Grove at Kingston. Both cars were strong runners in early '68, with Grove's Mustang being the "killer car" on the match race circuit. Grove went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Reyes won with an 8.12 at a track record speed of 187.50. Tommy got a holeshot win in the second race with his 7.99 beating Reyes' track record 7.98. These were the first sevens even turned by an Funny Car at Kingston. In the final race, the "Super 'Cuda" got the holeshot, and its 8.10 beat Grove's 7.98. On April 13, Larry beat Terry Hedrick in a best of three match at Houston, and the following day (April 14), he downed Kelly Chadwick three straight, running a track record 7.94. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for an eight-car show. A first-round 8.02/167.28 beat Bob Sullivan's 8.30/181, while in the semifinals, he soloed with a 9.54/104.40 when Ted Detar's new car broke. In the final, he faced Dick Harrell. The two had a good race, with Reyes' 7.92 (Low ET) at 177.16, beating out Harrell's 8.03/182. Early in June, Reyes took on "Dyno Don" Nicholson in a best of three match at Milan. In their first race, Don's 7.81/175 beat Larry's 7.88/183.66, but the "Super 'Cuda" came back to win the next two races for the match race with runs of 7.84/178.57 and 7.78/182.92. He won the Norwood, New England, 1/8 mile Funny Car Championships on June 21. Going into this race, the track record was held by Grove at 5.08. It was an eight-car show, and Reyes ran 5.12/146.34 in the opening round to beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 5.23/142. He broke the track record in the semifinals with a 5.03/149 over Lew Arrington's 5.86/115 in the "Brutus" Firebird. He faced Dick Loehr in the final. Dick's Mustang had engine trouble and slowed to 10.4 while Reyes lowered the track mark ever further with a 4.99 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was back at Milan for another match race with Schartman. Reyes won the first race with an 8.02/181 over Eddie, who blew a transmission. But the Comet was strong on that day and, after fixing the trans, beat Larry in the last two races. In the second race, Larry's 7.99/179.79 lost to Schartman's 7.81/181, and in the last race, Ed reset the track record with a 7.73 at 184 over Reyes' 7.87/189.64. Near the end of June, he went to Detroit for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and he opened up eliminations by running 8.07/176.81 over Tom Smallwood's 8.24/159 in the "Kingfish." But a second-round 8.13/177.51 lost to Hedrick's 7.83/179. Another win came at the Supercharged Invitational at Capitol on July 13. There he ran 7.77/191.88 to beat Lyle Fisher's 7.88/188 in the first round. In round two, his 8.07/185.94 advanced when Fred Goeske blew a transmission. A semifinal 7.68/189.06 beat Arrington, who got out of shape and shut down. He faced Nicholson in the final, and he covered him easily with a 7.54/192.03 (Top Speed and Low ET), taking the win over "Dyno's" 8.05/181. By this time, the "Super 'Cuda" was considered one of the top FCs to beat as it was almost always setting top times everywhere it ran. Yet another win came at the Super Stock Nationals. There a final round 7.53 beat a blower exploding Schartman in the final. Reyes had set Top Speed of the meet at 193.12. | Confirmed 7.54/192.03 at Fremont 1968 - Mick Coyne |

Notes: McEwen was at Fontana on September 25, where he made three exhibition runs. His times were 9.63/152.54, 9.60/154.63, and an out-of-shape 11.89/145.16. Rear-engine blown fuel. This replaced the Cuda he crashed earlier in the year. Tom sold the car to Fred Goeske in 1966. The photo is actually from early 1966 but reflects the late 1965 second car. Don Montgomery's "Dragster and Funny Car Memories" book quotes unattributed times of 8.88/178.92. Per Chris Martin, Tom ran 8.82/171 at Lions on the night that Dyer ran the great 8.63. Long Beach CA 1965 (2/66 Super Stock & Drag Illustrated). |
