Notes: Ran 8.97 at Maple Grove, 9.13 at Pomona, 9.083, 9.20 at Columbus, 9.17 at Englishtown, 9.12 at Indy. | Scott had one of the strongest Pro Stock Vegas in '74. At Pomona, he had one of three of the Vegas that qualified. His 9.19/149.50 put him in the #12 spot for the show. In the first round, he beat Ken Dondero's 9.31/148 in Don Nicholson's second Pinto with a 9.18/150.75. He beat "Dyno" himself in round two where his 9.13/149.25 stopped Nicholson's 9.24/146. In the semifinals, he came up against his third straight Pinto of eliminations. This one was the "Gapp and Roush" car with Wayne Gapp behind the wheel. Scott fell off to 9.22/144.92 and it wasn't enough to beat Gapp's 9.00/150. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was the "Gapp and Roush" team that stopped Scott again. This time it was Jack Roush behind the wheel when the two met in the second round. Jack's 8.97/152 put the little Vega's 9.083/149.50 on the trailer. That was Scott’s best NHRA national event ET for the year. He won the Cecil National Open with a final round 9.04 over Frank Iaconio. Shafiroff was back at Cecil County in April for the Spring Pro Stock Championships and while he didn't win, he did run a strong 9.03/151.54 in the first round. On May 5 he was at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Grand American Nationals. He was the quickest Chevy qualifier with a 9.02 (#3), but he lost early. Another win came on May 11 at Maple Grove's Dutch Classic. He qualified #1 and then beat Al Joniec in round one, with a 9.03/149.50. In the semifinals, he dropped into the eights with an 8.98 at only 143.34 to beat Dondero, who was now driving for Bill Jenkins. In the final, he was up against the big-block Camaro of Richie Zul. Scott got the holeshot and held on to win. The following week had Zul get some payback when he beat Shafiroff in the final at the NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga, Ontario. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 9.20/149.50 qualified #6, and he advanced past a broken Sonny Bryant in round one, with a 9.25/148.27. Unfortunately, he fouled against eventual winner Bob Glidden in round two and slowed to 9.61/146.10. He won over a sixteen-car field at Maple Grove's All-American Pro-Series race. Everyone was there. Scott won his first-round race with a 9.12 when Zul had his throttle stick open on his burnout. In the second round, he beat Herb McCandless and, in the semifinals, he got to the finish line first when both he and Gapp ran 9.10. He beat Dick Landy in the final for the title. On June 22, he was back at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. Scott qualified #3, but made it into the final against Zul. Shafiroff’s final round 9.15/148.76 lost to Richie's 9.08/149. The next NHRA event was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Scott qualified #13 with a 9.15. In the first round, he faced Jenkins' new driver, Larry Lombardo. Scott was down on power here as his 9.17/148.51 lost to Lombardo's 9.07/150. Like most of the Pro Stock cars that were at Englishtown, Scott made the trip to Maryland International for the second annual Pro Stock Open. He qualified #6 and lasted until round two where he broke against Glidden. Shortly after that, he was at Cecil County for an eight-car Pro Stock show. In round one, he had a close race against Nicholson that saw his 9.06/150 beat "Dyno's" 9.07/148. In the semifinals, he got a great start and his 9.07/150 beat Zul's quicker 9.02/151. This put him into the final against Gapp. Scott ran another good 9.04, but he lost to Gapp's 8.98. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. | We need to confirm the 8.90 best time for 1974.

Notes: Ran 8.76/155.70 at Indy in a runner-up effort. Zul was at Englishtown on May 9 for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #2 with an 8.83/155.70 (Top Speed) just behind Larry Lombardo's pole-winning 8.82/150. In the first round, his 8.82/155 beat Rich Simone's 9.07. A semifinal 8.86/154.37 cut Paul Blevins 8.98/151 and set up a final round between the two Low ET qualifiers. Even though Zul ran a consistent 8.83/154 in the final, it was not enough as Larry took the victory with an 8.74/155. At the end of May, he was at Great Meadows for an NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race. He qualified #1 with an 8.94/155.80 (Top Speed). Because only seven cars showed, he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and set Low ET at 8.90/150.50. Don Campanello got crossed up in his Monza in the semifinal, and Zul advanced with an 8.99/141.95. He faced another big block Camaro in the final, Carl Hobson, who had run 8.98 in the semifinal. The two had a great race, but Zul's slightly quicker 8.97/144.09 lost to Hobson's 8.98/153. Richie had the second quickest Camaro to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.93 got him into the #5 spot. In the opening round, a 9.03/152.02 beat John Theofiles' 9.19/147. But in round two, eventual winner Wally Booth's 8.84/154 beat his 9.04/152. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals in July. His 8.77/156.79 qualified #7, and an opening-round 8.92 beat Frank Iaconio's 8.98. Zul beat the quickest Ford from qualifying (#3) Wayne Gapp in round two, but he fouled away an 8.88/152.80 against Lombardo in the semifinal. He had to take the chance as Larry ran 8.74/154. He stopped off at Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Championships, and while he beat a fouling Bill Clayton in the first round, with an 8.83/154.37, he lost soon after and failed to reach the finals. The following weekend (July 18), he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division Two race. While he was neither the quickest nor the fastest, he managed to win the event. His final round 8.79/153.84 beat Roy Hill's 8.79/154. Early in August, he went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He was always the second-fastest Camaro qualifier at the NHRA national events; he was again as his 8.79/155.97 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. In the first round, his 8.86 lost to Booth's 8.68. Lombardo and Zul continued their battle in Division One at Maryland on August 15. The two faced off in the final, and Larry's 8.69/156 got the best of Richie's 8.92/153.84 runner-up effort.

Notes: First national event seven-second run with a 7.999/172.41 at IHRA Rockingham. Smith was the first member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.99 at Rockingham on 4/20/80. - Danny White | This car became the IHRA's first seven-second Pro Stocker with a 7.99 clocked at the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham, NC, on Sunday, April 20, 1980. - Bret Kepner | Smith changed engine builders for '80. Now he had Jon Kaase preparing his motors which ranged in size from 527 to 652. The engine size most commonly used was the 588. Started the season by qualifying #1 at the IHRA Winternationals with an 8.05/172.41. The times were good enough for Low ET and Top Speed, with the speed being a new IHRA record. Unfortunately, he failed to make the finals. Rickie was again the #1 qualifier at the next IHRA event at Rockingham; an 8.08/171 got him the spot. He ran the first seven-second time at a national event when he won his first round with a 7.99 over Billy Ewing. The race was stopped while photos of the historic time on the scoreboards was photographed, and he was congratulated for the feat. An 8.04 in the second round over a fouling Sam Carroll backed up the 7.99 for a new IHRA record. But in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Ronnie Sox's 8.13/168 with an 8.17/170. Smith made it to the finals at the IHRA Dixie Nationals but had to settle for runner-up to Warren Johnson, a position he would again have at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol on May 18. An 8.19/168.22 qualified second to Johnson's Low ET 8.09. Smith ran a best of 8.14 in the first round to beat Keith Albritten. An 8.19 in round two took out Bob Glidden's 8.37, and a semifinal 8.22 turned back Pat Musi. The two low qualifiers would meet in the final, where Johnson's 8.13/166 beat Rickie's 8.32/164.47. The next stop on the IHRA tour was Milan, Michigan, for the Northern Nationals. Smith's 8.04 in qualifying was the Low ET of the meet, but William Paris's holeshot aided 8.15 in the semifinals stopped his quicker 8.09. He finally got his win on August 3 at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. An 8.17/168.47 qualified #2. He got revenge on Paris by beating him with an 8.22 in the second round. In the semifinal, an 8.30/165.44 beat Roy Hill's 8.59/159. In the final, Don Nicholson fouled away a strong 8.20/167, and Smith motored through to an 8.321/164.83 victory. On August 13, he was in Maryland for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He qualified #7 with an off-pace (for him) 8.29. He picked up a tenth in the first round with an 8.19. An even quicker 8.15/170 in the second round lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.24/165. At the IHRA US Open, Smith again reset the speed record, this time to 174.08 during qualifying, which came with an 8.02 that was good for the #2 spot behind Johnson's 7.91. Both Johnson and Smith made it to the semifinals before losing. Rickie's 8.24/169 lost to Mike Kennedy's 8.25/164. The best times reported for the year were 7.95/175.12. We need to confirm where those took place.

Notes: Sox started his season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 7.98/173.07, becoming the fourth member of the Holley Seven-Second Club. He lasted until the semifinals before eventual winner Rickie Smith's 7.96/173 beat his 8.04/173. At Rockingham, for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Sox ran 7.86/174.90 to qualify #3. Again, he lasted until the semifinals, but this time a broken driveshaft yoke stopped him in his race against Don Nicholson. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals at Bristol. Sox ran 7.92/173.07 to qualify #2 just a tick behind Smith's 7.91. Ronnie improved to a 7.91 in the first round, and he set Low ET in round two with a 7.89 that beat Mike Kennedy. But for the third race in a row, he lost in the semis. This time his late 7.99 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.10. Everything clicked at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.92; he won his semifinal race over Keith Albritton, and in the final, he scored the victory with a 7.91/175 that dumped Johnson's 7.99/167. Early in July, he was at Connecticut for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.07 but fouled against Don Campanello on the run. He made it into the final at the IHRA Northern Nationals but had to settle for the runner-up spot as Johnson got the best of him there. These two would meet again in the final at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. Sox qualified #2 with a 7.94/173.41 while Smith was low at 7.93/176. Johnson followed these two with an 8.08/171. Ronnie ran 7.97 and 8.01/173 to get into the semifinals. A semifinal 8.06 advanced when Harold Denton fouled. Sox picked it back up to a 7.990/172.41 victory over Johnson's 8.11/168. The team's next stop was at Budds Creek for the Mountain Motor Nationals. The Dean Thompson Mustang was sporting a 612 cubic inch Boss engine for this event. A power failure had knocked out the timing clocks, so there were no ETs recorded. Sox ran well, and he reached the semifinals to run against Smith. Unfortunately, the lights didn't count down on Sox's side of the tree, and a red light came on. Management offered a rerun between the two cars, but Sox declined. Shortly after that, he was at Brainerd for the Quaker State Championships. He reached the final only to foul away an 8.01 while Denton picked up the trophy with an 8.05. It was then back to Bristol for the IHRA US Open Championships. Sox knocked them dead as he qualified #1 with an unheard of 7.79/176.49. He backed it up for a new IHRA record. Sox then dominated the race. An opening round 7.91/172.08 beat William Paris, a round two 7.87/173.47 beat Smith, and in the semifinals, he beat Denton. In another WJ vs. Sox final, his 7.89/174.08 put away Johnson's Monte Carlo at 8.25/161. Confirmed low qualifier in Atlanta Mountain Motor Challenge at 7.88/173.74 on 10/10/81, but tossed rods in a first-round 7.97/155.97 win and was done for the day. Ronnie finished number 1 in IHRA in 1981.
