Notes: First IHRA 8-second run. Ran 9.05/148.27 at Indy. Won Springnationals at Columbus. Ran 9.25 at 147.29 to win IHRA Bristol Springs. Early low qualifier at Gatornationals at 9.22- 148.51. Also ran 9.04 at Muncie. | Carlton started the season by qualifying the "Mopar Missile" first with a 9.22 (Low ET) at 148.51 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Barrie Poole's 9.96 Pinto with a 9.70. In round two, Carlton got the odd-lot single and eased it through with a 10.20. In the third round (32 car field), he beat Bob Lambeck with a 9.50/145. In the semifinals, Don picked up the pace to a 9.34/147.78 to beat Jack Roush's Pinto and to earn the right to face Don Nicholson in the final. Nicholson got the win in the final with a 9.33. Carlton bypassed many smaller meets, skipping the OCIR All-Pro events and the Bakersfield March Meet, and he didn't run any AHRA events either (except the National Challenge race) in '73. Instead, he concentrated on the NHRA and IHRA events. The "Missile" team was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals on March 3 and came away with a big win. Carlton qualified #2 with a 9.29/148.50 (Top Speed) behind Mike Fons' 9.25. He easily got past the first-round and then ran 9.25 at only 132 to beat Reid Whisnant's 9.41/144 in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 9.17 at 141.50 to beat Nicholson's 9.28/146. In the final, he faced off against old foe Ronnie Sox in an all-Duster final. Carlton got the win running a 9.19/141.00 to win over Sox's 9.29/146. The next event the team raced at was the NHRA Gatornationals. Don qualified #2 with a 9.12/150, a tenth behind low qualifier Wayne Gapp's 9.02/149. Carlton beat Rufus Boyd in the first round, with a 9.22, but in round two, despite running a great 9.06 at an early shutting off 139.75, he lost to Nicholson's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 9.01/150. Carlton completely dominated the IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas on April 29. He qualified #1 while resetting both ends of the IHRA Pro Stock record to 9.10/150.50. He then racked up times of 9.20, 9.13, and 9.12 to make the final, where he beat Bob Riffle in the "Rod Shop" Demon with another 9.10. 1973 was turning out to be the year of the Ford's with the 351 powered Pinto's winning everything, but Carlton proved that the Mopars could still run. On May 6, he again reset the IHRA Pro Stock record, this time down to 8.98 while winning the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. He ran 8.98 at 149.75 while qualifying #1. The car was promptly weighed and found to be 25 lbs overweight. He ran 9.02/151.77 in the first round, over Oscar Roberts' 9.36/146. In round two, a 9.04/149.50 advanced when Stuart McDade fouled. He dipped back into the eights in the semifinals with an 8.99/149.00, beating a fouling Ronnie Lyles at 9.22. In the final, he ran Dick Landy, who had run 152 mph here. Don took the win with another eight-second time, an 8.98/150.00 over Landy's 9.09/149. That was Don's third straight IHRA event win. He got his fourth win at the next race, the IHRA Northern Nationals at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals on May 20. He qualified #1 with a 9.24 (Sox was second way back at 9.35); Carlton worked his way to the semifinals, where he set Low ET with a 9.04 at 152.28 to beat Dave Strickler's 9.35/145. In the final, a 9.06/151.00 beat Don Grotheer's 9.47/145. He was starting to look unbeatable on the IHRA trail. Then the "Mopar Missile" pulled into Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. They were expected to run well, but nobody expected them to win as easily as they did. Don set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 9.32/147.54. In the first round, he beat Jack Roush's 9.50/145 with a 9.46/145.86. In round two, he dumped the "Grump," Bill Jenkins with a 9.45/146.81 over Bill's 9.48/145. In the semifinals, Carlton stepped up to a 9.38/147.78 over Melvin Yow's off pace 11.65. In the final, he met up with another Mopar that was wreaking havoc on the troops, Butch Leal, in his Duster. The all-Mopar final ended early when Leal fouled away a 9.44/146 while Carlton won with a 9.40/147.78. The "Mopar Missile" won for the fifth straight time on the IHRA circuit at Bristol for the Springnationals. The competition was getting closer as Don only qualified #3 with a 9.26 behind Leal (9.22) and Nicholson (9.23). But in eliminations, Carlton was strong. He ran 9.28 in the first two rounds to beat Eddie Ratliff and Strickler. In the semifinals, he beat Sox, who had taken out Leal the round before. In the finals, it was Carlton against the Pinto of Nicholson. The "Dyno Man" couldn't wait and fouled away a 9.43/145 while Carlton motored to a 9.25/147.29 for the victory. Don showed up at Milan Dragway for the NHRA Division 3 race and set Low ET and Top Speed before losing to Gapp in the final. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Carlton was one of almost 50 Pro Stock cars trying to make the 32 car field. He qualified #6 with a 9.21 and only lasted until the second round, where Sox's 9.19/147 beat his 9.28/147.78. Carlton didn't make the trip up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in August. He did run at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. Don lasted until the semifinals of the sixteen-car show, where his 9.18/147.78 lost to eventual winner Leal's 9.15/150. The "Mopar Missile" made its only AHRA showing of the year on August 26 for the National Challenge race at Tulsa. Don qualified #6 with a 9.18/148.76 in the 32 car field. He beat Raymond Martin in the first round, and in round two, a 9.19/148 beat Sonny Bryant's Big-Block Camaro at a distant 9.45/145. In the third round, he beat Mike Fons' 9.29/146 with a 9.20/149. Unfortunately, the car broke in the semifinal, giving eventual winner Jenkins a single into the final. A week later, he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was another 32 car show, and Carlton ran 9.24/149.00 to qualify #14. A first-round 9.23 beat Sam Gianino's 9.33, but in the second round, both he and Melvin Yow ran 9.05 (Don at 148.20), with Yow winning in Billy Stepp's Dodge. Carlton was shooting for his sixth straight IHRA victory when he rolled into Bristol for the All-American Championships on September 16. He qualified #7 with a 9.20, and in round one, he beat Hubert Platt. In round two, he picked up to a 9.15 to beat Dave Kanners' 9.44/144, and in the semifinals, he advanced when Yow lost an engine. Once again, he faced Nicholson in a final round. It was a good race, but "Dyno" stopped Carlton's streak of wins with a 9.14/150, beating the "Missile's" 9.16/149.00. He made it into another IHRA final at Rockingham for the US Open in October. This time he faced Wayne Gapp, and Wayne ran an impressive 8.85 to win over Carlton's 9.12/151.

Notes: Former Arlen Vanke car. Charlie was at Englishtown in April for a Pro Stock Circuit race. The cars were run at NHRA legal weight and although he failed to reach the finals, he ran 8.99 and 8.96 at 152 mph. A few days later he was at the Cecil National Open where he ran 8.9 in qualifying and in the first round, he beat Richie Zul with a 9.07/151. He went on to reach the finals where his 9.20 lost to Bob Ingles' Vega. Early in May he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he fouled against Bobby Yowell in the first round. He was also at the CARS Magazine Meet at Atco, but he lost to the race's eventual winner Scott Shafiroff in the first round. At the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified on the "bump" with a 9.14. A first-round 9.09/150.75 beat Reid Whisnant's 9.08/151, but in round two he lost to Shafiroff. Like most of the other competitors from Englishtown, Charlie made his way to Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open race on July 18. Unfortunately, the Duster broke in the first round. Also 9.09 at 150.75 at Englishtown. Qualified on the bump at Indy 1975 with a 9.22.

Notes: Cook was at Richmond Dragway in May for an eight-car show. Twelve cars attempted to qualify, and Jim made the field, but his 8.74 lost to the eventual winner Larry Lombardo, who ran 8.68 to advance in the opening round. In July, the team was at Atco for its US Pro Stock Championships. In the opening round, Carlton Phillips 8.61/156 defeated Jim's 8.89/154.10. Joe was at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 8.79/151.51 was the first alternate, but he made the field. In round one, he lost to Joe Satmary, 8.53/158 to 8.844/154.10. That was Jim's only NHRA national event. We are pretty dubious about the 159 mph speed. Used an actual four-speed transmission. AKA Haul Ass.

Notes: Gapp started the '73 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 9.31/144.23 behind Ronnie Sox's 9.17/148. In the first round, his 9.35/142.85 beat Mike Fons' 9.58/142. In round two, he beat Bob Lambeck's 9.58/143 with a 9.28/143.31, but he lost to Melvin Yow's 9.37/139 with an ailing 12.30-69.12 in the semifinals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a 9.02/149.50. Gapp appeared to be on his way to his first win, running 9.05 in the first round, another 9.05/148.76 in round two over Bob Glidden, and yet another 9.05/148 in the semifinals over Sox. But in the final, he faced Don Nicholson's similar Pinto that had also been running 9.0s. Don left first and took the victory with a 9.04/150 over Gapp's slightly quicker 9.03/149.00. The team then went to Tulsa for the AHRA Grand American race. It was a good race for Gapp as he made it into the final against Don Grotheer. There he set Low ET with a 9.20 to take the victory over Grotheer's 9.35. In mid-April, Milan Dragway hosted a four-car show. Gapp had one of the cars competing there. In his first race, his 9.27/147 beat Wally Booth's 9.31/146. Gapp could not race his second race as he had broken his Lenco transmission. He had a conventional 4-speed transmission in the car for his third race against Bill Jenkins. He had gotten out on the "Grump," but the Vega soon overtook him and won their race. Another win followed at the second NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail. Wayne's 9.32 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 9.31. These two would work their way into the final. Wayne had defeated Arlen Vanke with a 9.35/143.76 in the opening round, and his 9.32/143.54 beat Bob Riffle's 9.37/144 in the semifinal. In the final, Gapp ran 9.42/143.76 for the win. There was quite a contest between Gapp, Glidden, and Nicholson to be the "top dog" among the Ford Pro Stocks. Early in the year, Nicholson had the edge. Then Gapp started putting up some wins and some big numbers. No sooner than that happened, Glidden started to show some strength. Only one of the three, Gapp, showed up at the USRT race at Maple Grove in June. Of course, he won. To reach the final, he ran 9.36/144.69, 9.29/141.95, and 9.24/147.05. Then his final round 9.26/146.34 beat Ken Dondero's 9.30/144 for the money. All three of the Ford runners showed up at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, and surprisingly, Gapp was the slowest of them in qualifying. His 9.48 qualified #10. That set up a first-round meeting with Nicholson, who qualified #2 with a 9.32. "Dyno" must have been a little nervous because he fouled away a 9.52/142 in their race while Gapp advanced with a 9.55/141.95. In round two, Wayne's 9.59/144.23 beat Sonny Bryant's 9.64/142, but his ride ended in the semifinals, where his 9.59/142.85 lost to Butch Leal's 9.42/147. So even though he qualified the slowest among the Ford fleet, he lasted the longest in eliminations as he had the only Ford that lasted past the first-round. Shortly after that, he went to Cayuga, Ontario, for the Canadian All-Pro Championships. He got an easy first-round win when Ron Hutter's Vega broke, but Wayne still ran a strong 9.23/145.63. In the second round, the tires broke loose, and he lost to Larry Huff's 9.59/144. His next win came at the third Division 3 race held in Milan. He had run a pair of 9.23's in eliminations over Yow and Glidden (who fouled). He then stopped low qualifier Don Carlton's 9.29/149 in the final with a 9.21/147. Edgewater held an eight-car show soon after, and Gapp was there. But he got crossed-up in the first round, and shut down against Huff. He came back out later for a consolation race and set Low ET with a 9.07 at 148.51. The second USRT race was held in Minnesota. Once again, Gapp was a strong contender. It was a sixteen-car field, and he lasted until the semifinals before Dave Stricker's 9.30 beat his 9.54. Gapp then won the AHRA Grand American held at Kansas City on July 8. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.23/147.39. In the final, his 9.36 dropped Scott Shafiroff's 9.41. Gapp didn't stick around long at the third USRT event held at Cayuga. He lost to Sox in the opening round. Another win followed at the Pro Stock Showdown race at Kil-Kare Dragway. This was an eight-car show, and Wayne's 9.33 in round one, beat Levi Holmes' 9.55. Dick Maskin got crossed-up against him in the semifinal, and Gapp's 9.28 advanced. He faced Roy Hill in the final, and Gapp made his best run of the weekend, a 9.21 to get the victory over Hill's 9.33. The NHRA Summernationals had almost 50 cars attempting to qualify for the 32 car field. The Gapp and Roush team was tough as Jack qualified one Pinto first with a 9.13 while Wayne qualified the other #8 with a 9.27. But things didn't go so well in eliminations. Roush broke a rear end in the first round, and Gapp's 9.28 lost to Stuart McDade's 9.19 in round two. On July 29, he was at Tri-City Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division Three race. The Pinto seemed a little down on power for this event as Wayne "only" qualified #4. In round one, his 9.25/147.29 defeated Maskin's 9.41/142. But in the semifinal, he shut it down early against Bob Riffle, who won with a 9.18. Things didn't go the greatest at the NHRA Grandnationals either. Wayne had the quickest Ford, qualifying #2 with a 9.06 behind Leal's Duster at a similar 9.06. But Gapp was gone after the first-round. He was the victim of a holeshot by Dave Kanners that saw the Hornet run 9.34 to win over Wayne's quicker 9.30. To add insult, the other two strong Ford guys both made it to the semifinals, and Glidden finished runner-up to Leal. Another early loss came at the fourth Division 5 race held at Minnesota. Wayne qualified #1 with a 9.36/146.10 (Low ET and Top Speed), but he fouled against Irv Beringhaus in the first round. The PHR Championships was the next stop, and things went much better at this meet. He opened eliminations with a 9.17/148.27, and in round two, his 9.20/148.02 beat Mike Fons' 9.33/144. A strong 9.15 at only 141.28 advanced in the semifinals when Joe Satmary fouled. Leal also ran a 9.15 in his semifinal win. But the race for the victory was diluted when the clutch broke in the Pinto, giving Leal an easy win. Gapp was again the quicker Ford qualifier at Tulsa for the AHRA National Challenge race. His 9.07/148.76 qualified #2 behind Leal's 9.07/149. Wayne beat Fred Shafer in the opening round with a 9.21/149, but he had a little nap in round two, where his 9.09/149 lost to Fons' 9.32/145. The following week was the NHRA US Nationals. Gapp qualified #2 with a 9.05/150.50. Fellow Ford runner Glidden qualified #1 with a 9.03/152. These two would meet in the final. Gapp's run to the final consisted of a 9.08 over Herb McCandless, a 9.15 over Grotheer, and a 9.10 over Melvin Yow. Both he and Paul Blevins ran 9.11 (Gapp at 149.75), but the Pinto got the win light. Glidden's semifinal win came with a 9.10. It was going to be a close race between the two, and it was. Unfortunately, Gapp's 9.09/149.50 lost to Glidden's 9.08/151. again. Wayne won NHRA Ontario over Glidden with his best times of the year, 8.870/152.02. The team had a Lenco this year from Pomona on! Wayne also ran 8.99 at Columbus.
