Notes: Won IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in late March 1974 on the eighth-mile. Safford was at Tri-City in June for its Sixth annual Manufacturer's Meet. All eight cars there were to run three rounds. In his first race, he defeated Richard Tharp with a 6.80/214.28. He set Top Speed in his second race, where he turned a 6.43/226.13 to beat Shirley Muldowney. He soloed in the third round when Dale Pulde could not run in the M/T Grand Am. Safford ran 6.48/220.58 to win all three rounds. Kenny was at Bristol on Sept. 29 for the IHRA All-American Championships. His 6.64/207.37 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field, but he lost in the opening round of eliminations. |

Notes: Al kicked off the season at NHRA Pomona but did not make the show, running a best of 6.89/205.01. He showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and barely made the show, qualifying on the "bump" at 6.614/215.31. A 6.77/211.26 in the first round, lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.66/200. Early in May, he was at Maple Grove for its annual Dutch Classic. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 6.94/156.25 beat a wheelstanding Bill Leavitt. In the semifinals, his 6.64/162.45 lost to the event's eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Shortly after that, Al won the Memorial Day Classic race at Englishtown. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.47/205.47 that beat Pee Wee Wallace's 6.83/217. In the semifinals, a 6.54/189.07 beat a troubled Leavitt at 8.10. In the final, he faced Ivanof. Kosty had to shut off due to a leaky fuel tank. Al soloed for the victory with a 15.32/42.11. He won the CARS Magazine Championships at Atco over an eight-car field. Al set Low ET at 6.44 at 197.36 in a first-round win over Ivanof's 7.27/191. In the semifinals, a 6.55/200.00 advanced over Leavitt's broken Mustang II. In the finals, all he needed was a 16.21/38.31 for the victory when final-round opponent Jim Liberman shut off with no oil pressure. At the NHRA Springnationals, Al's 6.59/208.33 qualified #14. In the first round, his 6.68/201.79 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.45/211. Shortly after that, he was at New England for a twelve-car show that saw all cars make three runs, with the two Low ET cars advancing into the final. Al’s best of 6.65/191 failed to make the final. Cayuga held a race with the same format in July. Al shut off with problems in his first race against Larry Fullerton. In his second race, a 7.01/187.11 beat Joe Jacono's 7.05/195, and in his third race, he broke against Harlan Thompson. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Summernationals (#2 alternate at 6.70/205.47) but was runner-up to Leavitt at the Connecticut Summer Funny Car Championships. His final round 6.63/209.30 lost to Bill's 6.49/215. In August, he was at New England Dragway for the Epping Grand American. Segrini set Top Speed in the first round, while beating Larry Fullerton with a 6.57/215.31. In the semifinals of the eight-car show, he advanced with a 6.82/189.87 went Ivanof broke a rear end. In the final, he stopped Arne Swensen's 7.11 with a 6.62/203.16. Segrini also won the Maple Grove Back to School race in September. It was another eight-car show, and Al ran 6.73/222.22 (Top Speed) and 6.59/213.77 to reach the final. Once again, he raced Swensen in the final, and once again, he was victorious with a 6.56/220.58, beating Arne's 6.74/213. Englishtown was Al's final NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Former Detroit Tiger car. Segrini debuted his new "Faberge" sponsored Arrow at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #13, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.40/223.32 beat a wheelstanding Dale Armstrong. In round two, his 6.35/191.89 lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.94/234. The following week (March 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. This was only an eight-car field, and his 6.52/218 qualified #7. He lost to Billy Meyer in round one. In April, Segrini competed at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Bonanza race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, Al's 6.62/211.76 beat Chuck Etchells but a semifinal 6.35/212.76 lost to Rick Johnson's stout 6.01/235 in the "Custom Body" car. On May 10, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. There were six cars on hand, and all were to make two passes, with the two Low ET cars advancing into the final. Al ran 6.48/205.47 to beat a crossed-up Johnson in his first race and a 6.32/212.76 beat a fireballing Roy Harris in his second race. Unfortunately, his times were not good enough to transfer into the final. Al qualified #14 for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.26/231.55. He beat Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round, and in round two, he beat Gary Burgin, but a 6.22/231.36 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.16/233 in the semifinals. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.61/212.76. He overpowered the track in the first round, and smoked the tires to lose Armstrong's 6.10. A week later (August 17), Segrini was at New England for the NHRA Division One final. His 6.27/232.55 qualified #7 for the eight-car show, and he improved to 6.24/229.00 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to get around Al Hanna's 6.17/227. |

Notes: Won IHRA Springnationals Bristol 1990. | K.C. Spurlock was at the Texas Motorplex in January making his licensing runs. He ran 5.56/223 while getting the license. He then went to Pomona and showed 'em how it's done. He qualified last with a 5.57/255.60. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier John Force. John probably thought he had K.C. covered easily, but Spurlock ran 5.32/272.14 to trailer Force's 5.42/278. In round two, a 5.37/263.00 beat Ray Sherman's 5.61/270, and in the semifinals, his 5.39/276.49 beat Bruce Larson's 5.54/267. Everyone was now looking at this guy when he faced veteran Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had run as quick as 5.27 in the first round, but his semifinal win came with only a 5.89. Spurlock's 5.78/186.64 won in the final over McCulloch, who smoked the tires and shut off. It was quite the Funny Car debut for K.C. Of course, everyone wondered if it was just a flash in the pan when the teams showed up at Firebird for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. But Spurlock continued to impress, running 5.30/276.15 for the "pole." He beat Gary Densham in the opening round before losing to Mark Oswald's 5.37/275 in round two with a quicker 5.36/276.32. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals early in March. Spurlock's 5.45/269.78 qualified #7 and an improved 5.40/277.00 in the opening round beat Jim Murphy. But an even stronger 5.34/275.48 in round two lost to Larson's 5.31/265. He made it into another final at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals at Gainesville. He qualified #3 with a 5.36/270.64, and in round one, his 5.39/266.11 advanced when Rune Fjeld shut off with tire shake. Another 5.39 at 268 beat Jim Dunn in round two, and in the semifinals, Force overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Spurlock moved on with a 5.51/259. Once again, he was up against McCulloch in an NHRA final, but this time the "Ace" came through for the win. His 5.33/267 beat Spurlock's 5.40/273 runner-up effort. Things didn't go well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.37/275.90, but he blew it after Al Hofmann fouled against him in the first round. K.C. stayed in it, got out of shape, and crossed the centerline, disqualifying himself. K.C.'s best times this year were a 5.199 low qualifying and Low ET effort at Englishtown and 282.13 at Memphis. |

Notes: The car featured a 1971 Logghe chassis and was the original Phil Castronovo World Championship machine. It later went from Nichols & Oxner to Fred Forkner to Lew Arrington to Tom Stephens and Rick Stambaugh! | "I bought the car, and Rick Stambaugh put his drivetrain into it. It was a steel 392 with a pedal clutch on nitro - the last one East of the Mississippi at the time! We beat Jungle Jim in our first race at a 32 car show when Liberman broke. I then nearly put it up on the side panels on the burnout in the next round, clipping the Christmas Tree but not taking it out. Tommy Ivo came burning out past me as I sat on the track. We launched for the race and blew the blower and shattered the windshield to give Ivo the win. We were two guys racing a fuel funny car with ZERO money!" - Tom Stephens, Draglist LIVE, 8/16/21 |

Notes: Harlan won the rain-delayed Grande American at New England in August. In the opening round, he actually lost when his 6.86/195 fell to Kosty Ivanoff's 6.43/182. But the four quickest cars of round one all advanced into the semi-final whether they had lost or won. His time was good enough to advance, while some notables such as Don Prudhomme, Gary Burgin, and Tom McEwen didn't make the final four. In the semi-final, he faced Ivanof again, and Kosty lost a blower belt just off the line, so Thompson soloed at 6.85/185. In the final, he faced Ray Sherman, who was driving the "Black Magic" Vega. The two had a good race that saw Harlan's 6.74/204 take the victory over Ray's 6.77/228. | The car was based out of Boynton Beach, Fla., six blocks from my grandmother's house. It was the "Fireball VEGA" through 1976, the same paint job as in the handout photo you have pictured in 1975. They fitted a Monza shell on it over the Winter for the 1977 season. - David Hapgood | Best I found for the car in '76 was a 6.31 at Detroit and a 214 at Epping. - Dennis Doubleday |

Notes: Jim brought out this second car (sister to the Black Magic Vega), but it only ran in 1975. Wallace was at Englishtown in April for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car field, and in the first round, his 6.91/207.85 beat Paul Smith. He improved to 6.75/213.77 in a semifinal win over Tommy Grove. In the final, he faced Grove again as Tom Prock had exploded a supercharger while winning and could not run the final. Once again, Wallace was able to beat Grove. This time his victory came with a 6.56 (Low ET) at 214.28. In May, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic race. Unfortunately, he crossed the centerline and was disqualified in the first round, while racing eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Shortly after that, he was at Cayuga for the second NHRA Division 1 race. He set Top Speed during qualifying at 214.28, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.98/207.37 beat Stephen Bernd. In the semifinals, a 7.02/207.37 beat a wheelstanding Jim Wemett. His final-round opponent was Ira Hollensbe. Pee Wee got the title with a 7.01/206.89 beating Ira's 7.46/175. His next stop was at Napierville for another eight-car show. He lost early there. At Atco, for the Cars Magazine Championships, Wallace's off-pace 7.38/192.71 lost to Liberman's 6.91/225 in the first round. Another first-round loss came at Englishtown's Memorial Day Classic. There, eventual winner Al Segrini's 6.47/205 stopped his 6.83/217.39. The first-round losses continued at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals in the first week of June. He qualified #13 with a 6.57/223.32, but he smoked the tires to a 7.30 and lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.63. At the Division 1 race at Maple Grove, he ran 6.63 to qualify #3. This time, he made it past the first-round only to lose to Don Prudhomme's 6.59/204 with a 6.63/212 in the semifinals. He was back at Cayuga in July for its Gold Cup Championships race. There were thirteen FCs there, and all ran three races, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Wallace soloed with a 7.30 on his first run. In his next race, he lost to Larry Fullerton, and in his third race, his quicker 6.97/196.07 lost to Joe Jacono's 7.08/209. His times were not quick enough to advance into the final. At the Connecticut Summer Funny Car Championships, Wallace's tire-smoking 8.57/191.48 lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.39/194 in the opening round. While he didn't win or even make the final, Wallace set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.59 at Maryland International for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. That was pretty impressive, considering eventual winner Don Prudhomme could not match or beat his time. | Later sold to Willie Borsch. - Joe Moore |

Notes: T-Boned Frank Mancuso's funny car when Frank crossed the center line at Englishtown on July 30/1978. Mike sez: the car was junk. Everything was tweaked, bent, or broken. It even destroyed the engine. During the tumbling and rolling over, the chute got sucked into the intake and ruined all the compressor blades. A funny side note: years later, while i was jet parts junking in an Oklahoma jet junk yard, I saw the engine with that chute still sticking out of the intake. After the crash, I built my streamliner and raced that for several years. |
