Notes: Bruce was at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.53/230.76. Larson took it easy on a solo run in the first round, when Frank Oglesby broke. In the semifinals, his 6.71/198.67 beat low qualifier Rick Johnson, putting him in the final against John Speelman. Bruce had problems in the final and shut off to 7.47/136.57 to log a runner-up finish to Speelman's 6.43/229. Later in May, he was at Maple Grove for the Jungle Jim Memorial race. It was a six car show and all cars made two passes with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Larson had problems getting hooked up here as he smoked the tires to a 7.06/200.89 that lost to Roy Harris' Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.13/233 in his first race. In his second, he again broke the tires loose and his 7.17/219.51 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.26/232. We needless to say, he failed to reach the final. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1988. | Bruce stepped up his act in '88 and it showed when he won his first NHRA National event this year. He made the switch from Chevy bodies cars to Oldsmobile. His season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.54. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. In that race, Ed smoked the tires while Larson motored into the second round where his 5.58 lost to John Force's 5.42. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.69. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. He did not race in the IHRA events this year so the next big event he attended was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta where he lasted until the second round where Oswald's 5.55 stopped his 5.62 from advancing. Oswald got him again at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, only this time it was in the first round. Bruce qualified #12 there with a 5.72. Larson got his first NHRA win at the Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He beat Tom Hoover and a fouling Force with a 5.60/254 in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he beat McCulloch and in the final, it was Kenny Bernstein he beat for his first victory. After that, it wasn't long before he was in another NHRA final; in fact it came at the very next race, the Springnationals at Columbus. Bruce qualified #4 with a 5.51. He took out Chuck Etchells in the first round, and a 5.50/268 beat John Martin in round two. In the semifinals, Mike Dunn smoked the tires against him and Bruce's 5.54/254 run moved him into the final to face Force. It was not much of a race in the final; when Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.69/50.65 while John ran 5.52/262 for the victory. Bruce followed the NHRA tour up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.65/263.00 and lasted until the second round when eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.50 beat his 5.59. Then came another final round appearance at the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.49/261.55 qualified #5, and he beat Frank Kramberger in the first round. A second round 5.59/260 beat Force's 5.65/251, and in the semifinals, a 5.57/260 beat Bernstein's 5.62/255. In the final, he ran Prudhomme who had been running steady 5.4's. Bruce tried hard, running a 5.63/260, but it finished second best to the "Snake's" 5.41/257. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals where he qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 5.55/254.95. R.C. Sherman fouled against him in the first round, and Bruce advanced with a 5.68/251.29. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 5.76/254.23 when Tim Grose broke and was unable to run. He found himself in another final, and while it wasn't a national event, I'm sure he still felt good. In the final, he faced low qualifier Bernstein. Kenny got the win while Larson got another runner-up finish. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals in Aug, everyone was running 5.3's in qualifying, except, it seemed, Larson. He qualified #8 with a 5.45/267.30. In the first round, he showed he could run with the big dogs by beating Bryan Raines with a 5.35. In the second round, a 5.52 beat a tire smoking Oswald. He was surprised by a quick-leaving Brad Tuttle in the semifinals and his 5.59 couldn't catch Brad's 5.62. |

Notes: Jim started the '71 season by running at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. He qualified #10 with a 7.54 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he was caught napping by Ron O'Donnell, who put a 7.27/202 run on Jim's quicker but losing 7.23/202.70. He was at Fremont the next day for its Funny Car Championships. Jim Dunn and JJ had a tire-smoking battle in the first round, with Liberman's 8.25/187.88 coming out on top over Dunn's 8.36/182. In round two, a 7.42/189.46 beat Rich Siroonian, but he lost in the semifinals to Gene Snow. On January 10, he was at Lions for AHRA's first of ten Grand American races of '71. Jim qualified with a 7.01 and in the first round, ran his best ever (to this point) of 6.89 at 206.42. Unfortunately, even with that strong run, he was late off the line and lost to Leroy Goldstein's 6.96/207 in the "Ramchargers" car. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, Jim qualified with a 7.47 and, in the first round, ran 7.02/202.70 over John Lombardo. A 7.39 beat an out-of-shape Tom Sturm in round two, but a third-round 6.91/211.76 wasn't enough to beat Snow's 6.87/211. Early in March, Jim covered for a sick Pat Minick and drove the "Chi-Town Hustler" to win Southeastern Dragway's Spring Funny Car Championships. Late in March, he was back in his own car for a best-of-three-match race against Arne Swensen at Cecil County. Liberman reset the track record with a 7.08 at 179.64 to win the first race, and he made it two straight by winning the next race as well. Formerly listed 6.51/226.70 times, but those are very quick for 1971. We need confirmation. Jim ran a confirmed 6.78/217.39 and 6.82/201.79 at Atco. He ran 6.77/216.86 track record at NED on 9/19/71 in winning the New England Funny Car Nats and ran 6.95/211.26 (track record) at Epping on 7/04/71. |

Notes: While Russell Long was waiting for Charlie Proite's new Charger to be finished, he jumped into the "Tom and Jerry" Mustang for the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.83 qualified #2 behind Butch Maas' 6.60 in the M/T Grand Am. Unfortunately, the car broke in the opening round, giving opponent Gene Snow a solo into round two. This was the only race he drove this car at as he was behind the wheel of Proite's "Pabst Blue Ribbon Charger" at the AHRA Winternationals. |

Notes: Ed McCulloch was especially strong in '75. He had really shown his hand in '72 as the dominant FC of the season, but the '73 and '74 seasons were nowhere near as good. He started the '75 season at the Fremont New Year's Day Funny Car meet. He and Raymond Beadle had a tire-smoking battle in the first round, with Ed's 7.21 advancing over the "Blue Max's" 7.44. Unfortunately for McCulloch, he broke on the line against Jim Dunn in the second round. McCulloch was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, and although he qualified, he blew the engine and was unable to run in eliminations. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.44, but in the first round, his 6.72/197.36 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.61/206. The next stop came at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. It was a twelve-car field, and McCulloch's 6.31/210.77 qualified #3. He got some payback over McEwen in the opening round, where his 6.40/219.51 beat the "Goose's" 6.86/164, but in the second round, the car broke on the line against John Lombardo. He skipped the NHRA Gatornationals but then came back stronger than ever. At Irwindale's big Coca-Cola 32 car show, Ed was running well. A 6.62 in the first round advanced easily, and in round two, his 6.47/223.88 beat Clarence Bailey. He improved in round three, where his 6.33/217.91 beat Gary Southern driving the "Voodoo" Pinto. But due to it getting late, track management decided that whoever ran the best ET in winning their semifinal race was declared the winner. The trouble was, as well as Ed had been running, one car had been running a bit stronger - the Monza of Don Prudhomme. So, while Ed won his semifinal race with a 6.44/225.00 (Top Speed), Prudhomme was declared the winner with his track-record 6.25, beating Gary Burgin. Things got better fast; McCulloch then went to Seattle for its opening show of '75 and won. Not only did he win, but he also reset the track record twice, first with a 6.27 (at 218.97) and then again in the final with a 6.24/226.13 (Top Speed) in the final over Mike Miller in the "Green Elephant." He then made a stop at Portland, where he won again. Ed had held the track record at 6.37 before the race, but once again, he reset it a couple of times. Not many cars could run three 6.2s in a row at this time, but Ed did it here. A first-round 6.25 (at 218.97) beat Ken McLean, and in round two, he really wowed them with a 6.22 at 217.91 to beat Jerry Ruth. For the second straight race, he faced Miller in the final, and the results were the same: Ed's 6.27/218.97 beat Miller who smoked the tires. Another win came at the Ignitor Funny Car Championships at Firebird Raceway. There he set low et at 6.77 and beat McEwen and Prudhomme on his way to a final round showdown with Ruth. It was a close final with both running 6.82 (Ed at 211.68), but Ed got the win light. On April 27, he scored yet another big victory, winning the Oregon National Open at Portland. He had Low ET at 6.28 in qualifying #1, and he stopped Prudhomme in the final. The month of May started with McCulloch in the victory circle at Fremont's Northern Nationals. There he stopped Jake Johnston and Neil Leffler (on a holeshot) before beating Dunn in the final with a 6.27/224.43. He was back in Seattle on May 31 for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. A 6.52/211.76 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Prudhomme. An opening round 6.76/191 stopped Nick Harmon, while a strong 6.39/205.01 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.61/226 in the semifinals. The 6.39 came at a price as he broke the rear end and could not race Prudhomme in the final. He had more problems at Portland for the Rose Festival Drags, where he again broke in the final against Kenny Goodell. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, Prudhomme out qualified him (6.29), but Ed's 6.41/223.88 got the #2 spot. In the first round, McEwen smoked the tires against him, and Ed's 6.45 moved on. In round two, he ran another 6.45 at 205.47 to beat Burgin's 6.58/221. His ride ended in the semifinals, where Beadle's 6.44/223 beat his 6.51/202. The following week, he was at Byron for its Manufacturer's Meet. All twelve cars made two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Gene Snow returned to driving for the first time since his back surgery and made his return a winning one by stopping McCulloch's 6.95/181.81 in the first round with a 6.84/214. Ed won his second race with a 6.90/183.67 over Pat Foster driving the "Chicago Patrol," but his ETs failed to get him into the final. It was then on to Connecticut, where Ed set Low ET at 6.42 before breaking in the final against Bill Leavitt. He was in another final round, this time at Maple Grove's Fourth of July race. Unfortunately, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires against Jim Liberman. | Ed turned a 6.25/225.00 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship on 11/1/75. - RT |

Notes: McCulloch started his season at OCIR's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Unfortunately, the season started with a first-round loss to the race's eventual winner John Lombardo. Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #11 with a 6.371/227.84. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.33/185 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.30/236. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Ed's 6.64/221 qualified #15. In the first round, a shutoff 13.40-58.52 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.40/232. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.27/232.55 in the opening round defeated Gordie Bonin's 6.29/229. A second-round 6.09/231.95 beat Prudhomme's 6.07/234. His 6.26 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.22. Early in April, he was at Portland for its opener. It was an eight-car show, and McCulloch had tire shake in the first round, and shut off against Mike Miller. It was not his day as in his second race, his 6.89/205 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.63/174. The following day, he was at Seattle for its opener. Ed's 6.57/220 beat Nick Harmon in round one, but tire shake stopped him again in the semifinal. He was forced to shut down to a 10.60-72 loss against Tommy Ivo, who advanced to the final with a 6.61/224. His next stop was at OCIR for the big 64 car show. It was rain-delayed by one week, but Ed set Low ET in round two while beating Billy Meyer with a 6.26. He reached the final only to lose to Pat Foster. On May 6, Seattle hosted the NHRA Division Six opener. Ed's 6.25/231.95 in qualifying was second only to Bonin's 6.19/234. But Ed had problems in the opening round and shut down to a 10.26 that lost to Miller's 6.63. His next stop was at Portland for the Oregon Open. In the first round, McCulloch's 6.56/197 beat Miller's 6.97/141. But the Arrow continued to have problems getting down the track in the semifinal. Ed's tire-smoking 10.10 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16. He really improved his qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, a 6.18/214.79 qualified #4. But he was still having a tough time getting past the first-round at the major NHRA events. This time he shut down to an 8.98/96.77 loss to Bob Pickett, who advanced with a 6.27/220. Ran 6.09 at Bakersfield 3/78, defeated a quicker 6.07 by Don Prudhomme. Ed ran best NHRA times of 6.090/237.46 on race day at NHRA Englishtown 7/17/78. Formerly listed 6.03/238.09 for 1978. If Ed ran those numbers, where did it occur? | Mean car, with the Bowers Blower/Okie Bernd combo. Shown in a Summer '78 Midwest match race article in SS&Dl, titled "The Rites Of Spring." Notes: Clint qualified on the "bump" for the Phoenix Winter Classic on January 25. In the opening round, his ailing 8.50/141.06 lost to Tripp Shumake's 7.73/193. Clint ran at the Pomona Winters and suffered a fire (seen in the photo). He was a DNQ there at 7.120. Clint ran 8.60/167.91 on a slippery track at the Rocky Mountain Funny Car championships at Bandimere on 7/76. He ran 6.71 (speed unknown) to claim the second alternate at NHRA Bandimere (with a Corvette body?) We need to validate that it was this car. We formerly listed 6.77 for this car. |

Notes: Jim was at the second OCIR All-Pro race in January. He qualified #3 with a 6.75, and in the first round, he advanced with a 6.86. In the semifinals, he ran a 6.73 but lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.71 in the Pisano & Matsubara Vega. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. A 6.69/207.37 qualified #15 in the 32 car field. In the first round, he improved to 6.53/214.28 in beating Ira Hollensbe's 6.87/192. In round two, he beat Russell Long's 7.00/210 in Charlie Proite's new Charger with a 6.61/213.77. A third-round 6.55/216.34 beat Stan Shiroma's quicker 6.51/220 in the "Pacemaker" Vega. His ride ended in the semifinals, where Paoli smoked the tires and lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. After such a good run at Beeline, it was surprising to see Jim's name among the list of non-qualifiers at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 8.111/188.66. It should be noted that traction was an issue there as the low qualifier (Butch Maas) got the spot with a 7.181 and the bump was Ed McCullouch at 7.842! Jim then went to Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals and qualified #2 with a 6.89. He failed to reach the finals. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, and once again, he was unable to qualify (Jim does not appear on the NHRA DNQ list - need to validate). On April 29, he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three Opener. Paoli's 6.71 qualified #2 behind Dale Emery's 6.67 in the "Jeg's Camaro. His tire-smoking 7.63 almost lost to Frank Thurman in the opening round, but he got around him before the stripe. Jim got a solo in the semifinal and made an easy pass. He faced Emery in the final, and once again, he smoked the tires. This time there was no hope in driving around his opponent as Emery ran a stout 6.44/228 for both Low ET and Top Speed. The following week (May 6), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. His 6.72 qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, he ran an easy 8.38 when Cliff Brown lost a supercharger. In round two, a strong 6.55/214 lost to an even stronger 6.34/227 by Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega. Surprisingly, Jim failed to qualify for the second NHRA Division Three race at National Trail, but he was not alone as Al Begler and Al Hanna, among others, failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Next came his big win at the IHRA Northern Nationals. His 6.98 qualified #4, and in the opening round of eliminations, he beat Kenny Bernstein, who was driving the "LA Hooker" with a 6.64 (Low ET). Another 6.64/209 in round two beat Paula Murphy, and in the semifinal, he fell off to 6.72/209.30. That was still good enough to drop Joe Lee's 6.93/204. He faced the "killer car" of the day, the Setzer Vega driven by Foster in the final. Both made a good run, with Jim's 6.65 getting the win over Pat's 6.66. On June 17, Jim was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals; he made it into round two before the eventual winner Bill Leavitt, stopped him with a 6.76. Jim also ran 6.64 at IHRA Northern Nationals 73. He qualified #9 at the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.572/222.22. He beat none other than Don Prudhomme in round one, 6.556/220.04 to 6.649/222.77. He took out Al Bergler in round two with a 6.550/213.27 to 6.84/184. Pat Foster got a bit of revenge on Jim when he took him out in the semis, 6.71/224 to Jim's 11.33/68. Jim was the second alternate at NHRA Indy with his best time of the year, 6.526/218.00. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: 1980 was the last year of the "Marines" sponsorship. In March, Pickett was at Beeline for the NHRA Divisional race. He was running well, hitting a 6.35/231.95 in his semifinal win over Tripp Shumake, but in the final, his 6.42/227.84 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.22/237. In April, he was at OCIR's 64-car show. He ran 6.27 at 231 twice to win over Ed Moore in the "Impulse" Mustang and John Force. He lost before the finals. At the third NHRA Division 4 race at Houston, only three FCs showed. Unfortunately, in the first round, Pickett's 6.42/230.17 lost to Johnny White's holeshot 6.45/226. He qualified for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.25/234.98 (#13), but he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Bob won the NHRA Division 5 race at Brainerd in August He ran a best of 6.18 en route to the final. In the final, he beat Rob Williams with a 6.20/224.43. Pickett's 6.31/205.01 qualified #7 in the eight-car field at the PHR Championships. He lost in the opening round to eventual winner Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian." He failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals when his 6.17 best failed to make the 6.10 "bump." He qualified #11 at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.24/230.76, but he lost to Rob Williams in the first round. |

Notes: Tom Ridings got the Joe Pisano ride for 1979. The team qualified #13 at the Winternationals with a 6.368/231.36 and then lost a close first-round race to the team's former driver, Pat Foster, in the Super Shops car, 6.251/234.37 to 6.383/226.70. In April, Tom was at OCIR for its big 64 car show. He set Low ET at 6.15, but in the final, his 6.88 fell to Raymond Beadle's 6.28 in the "Blue Max." Their next NHRA event was Seattle, where Ridings claimed the bump spot at 6.30 with a booming 238.09 mph. He won a thrilling 6.240/235.60 to 6.240/238.72 first-round battle over Tom McEwen but fell to Jim Dunn in round two, 6.140/232.55 to 6.490/184.80. The team qualified #10 at the Ontario Finals at 6.415/224.43 and claimed a 6.679/223.32 to 6.723/230.76 upset over Kenny Bernstein in round one. In round two, John Force won a close but off-pace battle to put them out, 7.238/217.39 to 7.271/205.01. We need confirmation of a 6.00 ET the team reportedly ran this year. Where did that occur? I recall hearing about it but do not know where it was run. |

Notes: Also 232.55 National Record at Indy 9/73. Times and info from National Dragster, 2/01/74. Low qualifier at Salt Lake City WCS meet in August 1973 at 6.894 in the high altitude. Ran 6.380 at Amarillo. | Low qualifier at 6.540 at Amarillo for the Word Finals. Finished runner up to Frank Hall in the Green Elephant, losing on a holeshot, 6.390 to 6.380. Ran 232.99 at Amarillo (altitude factored). Bobby qualified #6 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 6.417/227.27. But he came back out to make another pass and lost a motor in the lights. He stuffed the car into the guardrail. He was OK, but the car was not. |
