Notes: By 1973, there weren't a lot of Challengers running in Pro Stock as most of the Mopar campaigners had switched to the A-body platform. Castaldo stuck to his Challenger and did well with it. In April, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. Those pesky Vega's were running well as they picked up the first three spots in qualifying. Castaldo's 9.52 beat Earl Hansell's 10.81 in the opening round of eliminations. But he spun the tires hard in the semifinal and lost to Rich Mirarcki's 9.85. He was at Englishtown on April 15 for an eight-car round-robin show. In the first round, his 9.71/145.86 lost to Mirarcki's 9.51/144. In his second race, Ray Allen's 9.50/145 defeated his 9.57/143.31. He soloed in his third race and ran his best time at 9.53/144.23. Shortly after that, he went to Connecticut for yet another eight-car show. A first-round 9.72 beat Rich Simone, and in the semifinal, his eased up 10.16 advanced when Frank Iaconio fouled. But he hurt the engine on the pass and could not run the final. Iaconio took his place as the "break rule" was in effect. Charlie was the second alternate at the NHRA Summernationals at 9.52/143.50. That was his only NHRA national event. Charlie won at an Englishtown event in July with a 9.51/143.76, per Raceway Park News. He also ran 9.46 at Atco. Reed Koeppe owns the car as of 9/21, and he confirms S&M built it. |

Notes: Herb was at Lakeland in October for a best-of-three match against Paul Blevins. Herb won the first race with a 9.10 over Paul's slightly quicker 9.09. But the Vega was able to win the next two races and the match with times of 9.05 and 9.01 over McCandless's 9.15 and 9.08. Herb's best speed was 149. McCandless also won over an eight-car field at Atco in November. It seems he had quite the advantage there as the car was running about 300 lbs light. Everyone else seemed to be running legal weight, and while Herb was running 8.5s, only one other car dipped into the eights. In the first round, Herb's 8.57/158.17 easily dumped John Healey's 9.19/148. He improved to 8.53/158.73 in the semi-final to drop Frank Russo's off-pace 10.26. He faced Richie Zul's big-block Camaro in the final. Zul had been the only other car in the eights, and he ran 8.98/15 final, but that was still almost a half-second behind McCandless' winning 8.55/158.45. |

Notes: This info comes from the info given on the Landy Dart Sport on display at the All Hemi Reunion in 2008. Landy's Dart as well as Larry Huff's Dart and the Duster campaigned by the late Irv Beringhaus were all built by Landy, Fuller. Irv's Duster was sold to Mike Fons by Irv's widow, therefore becoming the Motown Missile. | Performance info confirmed by 1975 National Dragster ad. Ran 8.73/156 at Great Lakes 5/75. | Englishtown held a Spring Pro Stock Bonanza race with the cars running at match race weights in April. Fons didn't reach the final, but he ran some impressive times. His three runs were 8.77, 8.65, and 8.70. The only one that went quicker was Wayne Gapp at 8.64. |

Notes: Also 8.90 at 1975 at Martin and Tri-City WCS. Also, 152.54 at West Salem 75. | The Maskin and Kanners Hornet was half of AMC's Pro Stock effort along with Wally Booth. The two ran well in '75 but nothing near as well as they would in '76. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Dave qualified #4 with an 8.871/152.80 just in front of Booth's 8.92/151. Kanners ran well, running 8.92 and 8.95 to reach the semifinals, where he faced Bob Glidden's "new" '70 Mustang. Dave's 8.90 was strong, but Glidden's stronger 8.82 got the win. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Kanners again was the stronger of the two AMC cars in qualifying. His 8.90/152.02 got the #4 spot for the show. He beat Roy Hill's Duster in the first round, with an 8.98 and another 8.98 in round two beat Ron Hutter's surprising Vega at 9.07. In the semifinals, he faced the Gapp and Roush Maverick. Gapp had been running 8.8's in eliminations, and his performance advantage held in the semifinals, where Dave's 8.95/151 fell to Gapp's 8.91/153. The two AMC teams shared information, and Booth-Arons built a lot of the engine parts. They shared input from test sessions, but early in '75, the two teams drifted apart when Dave started trying different combinations using Diamond Racing Engines to do their research and development. Dave was at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.90/155.97 while Booth was a little farther back in the #6 spot. Both lasted until the semifinals of the eight-car show. Dave's 8.93 lost to a holeshot 9.00 front Ken Dondero driving Bill Jenkins' Vega. Dave won the NHRA Divisional race at Suffolk. He beat Lee Edwards in the final with an 8.95/149. Dave was at Thunder Valley in Marion, SD, for the NHRA Division 5 race in June. He won that as well with a final round 9.22/147.54 over a fouling Warren Johnson. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.99/149.00 qualified #2. Unfortunately, he was late in the first round, and his 9.04/150.75 lost to Richie Zul's 9.11/150. Dave ran his best NHRA times of the year at Indy, qualifying #4 at 8.870/153.32 and making it to round 3, where eventual runner-up Richie Zul won an 8.95 to 8.96 decision. |

Notes: After being out of the sport for ten years, Dakin and Gary Rupp returned to the sport in a big way. At The IHRA Winternationals, the team qualified #5 with a 5.36/266.27. A first-round 5.49/264.70 beat Butch Blair and a 5.42/263.15 beat Don Kohler in the semifinal. In the final, Bob Strauss broke, and Dakin ran a 5.38/269.66 (Top Speed) for the victory. They attempted to make the show at the NHRA Gatornationals, but a best of 5.30 failed to qualify. They tried again in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and a 5.29/258.57 qualified #15. Unfortunately, they lost to Dennis Forcelle in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Mid South Nationals at Memphis, and once again, they made the show with a 5.40/271.41 (#16). Dakin broke in the first round, but still beat a tire-smoking Gene Snow. They could not repair in time for their round two match against Eddie Hill. Back to IHRA for the Springnationals at Bristol in May, they qualified #4 and beat Forcelle in the first round, and a 5.83/237.74 beat Snow in the semifinal when Gene smoked the tires. In the final, it was Dakin's turn to go up in smoke, and his 6.98/170.73 lost to Jim Head's equally troubled 6.90/143. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.22/271.57 qualified #15. Pat lost to Joe Amato in the first round. In June, in Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.32/265.33 qualified #10. Once again, he lost in the first round, this time to Gary Ormsby. Back in his own stomping grounds, the IHRA, Dakin had some trouble qualifying at the Northern Nationals at Milan. His best of 5.61/273.29 left him as the first alternate, but when Kohler fireballed an engine in qualifying, he could not run, and Dakin was moved into the show. In the first round, he improved to a 5.34/260 to beat Mike Brotherton, but in the semifinal, a 5.52/170.73 lost to Snow's 5.31/266. He attempted to make the show at the NHRA Summernationals, but a 5.36/271.32 best left him the fourth alternate. A big win came at the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. There they qualified #2 with a 5.34/254.74. In the semifinals, he beat Chris Karamesines while setting a 266.95 track record. A 5.40/264.97 beat John Carey for another IHRA win in the final. | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Dakin qualified #4 with a 5.336/267.06 & Drew #5 qualifier Jim Head in Round 1. During the run the Timers failed but via the ESPN Cameras Dakin clearly got the round 1 win, Dakin drew #1 qualifier Richard Holcomb in the semis. unfortunately, Dakin had a loose & Leaky Valve Cover that couldn't be tightened in time & had to watch the eventual Runner Up Holcomb solo to the finals. |

Notes: John started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event (NHRA Phoenix AZ D7 1/87). It was an eight-car show, and Carey was the first alternate with a best of 6.20 on the cold track. He ran much better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.49/243.63 qualified #9. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Hank Endres, which he lost. Darlington was his next stop for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but his first-round 5.88/236 lost to Mike Brotherton's 5.61/236. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There he was the fifth alternate with a best of 5.68/243.96. He also failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the first alternate with a 5.69/243.90. John ran 5.43/244.56 at the Angus Fuels IHRA Showdown at Bristol. Photo from Indy 1987. |

Notes: 1986 brought significant changes for "Atomic Al." At the end of the year, he had a successful tour in Australia, met his wife there, moved to Florida, changed the car's name, and started running better. | Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. |
