Notes: Photo from Columbus 1988. Finished #5 in 1988. Low qualifier at Gatornationals at 5.154. Also 5.09 at Indy, 283.55 at Gainesville. | The Miller American cars were owned by Dick LaHaie, not Larry Minor. Larry had the sponsorship deal and got Dick to run his car under the colors while Minor raced his own (ex Gary Beck) car and the funny cars. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | Dick started the '88 season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at Firebird Raceway in January He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.22. In round one he set Low ET of the meet with a 5.17 at 269 to beat Dennis Forcelle. A semifinal 5.23/271.90 beat a tire smoking Gary Ormsby and advanced him into the final against Joe Amato. In the final, Amato broke and LaHaie ran 5.24/272.72 for the victory. He followed that up by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. A 5.19 qualified #3. He beat Dan Pastorini in round one, and a 5.24/276 took care of Frank Bradley i round two. In the semifinals he had a close race with Eddie Hill as Dick's 5.21/276 beat Eddie's 5.22/284. In the final he met Amato again, and once again it was the same results. Dick got the victory with a 5.13 (Low ET of the meet) at 275. Dick did not run any IHRA events except for the Chief Nationals in October, so his next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.15/282 got him the pole, but in the first round, Hill stepped up to a 5.08/285 to beat his 5.18/283.55. He also lost early at the next NHRA race, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta where he smoked his tires in the second round and lost to Darrell Gwynn. Memphis was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Mid-South Nationals and Dick's bad luck streak continued. He qualified #4 with a 5.29, but he lost to Forcelle in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals where Gwynn stopped him. Things weren't any better at the NHRA Springnationals where he qualified poorly (#10) and Hill beat him in round one. After early season success, it was a disappointing mid-season, but at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, Dick made it into the final. He qualified #4 for the show with a 5.25/272.06. He beat Pastorini in the first round, while in round two his 5.25/269 beat Hector Pickering. In the semifinals a 5.26/270 dropped Gwynn. This put him in the final against Gene Snow. Gene was running his direct drive car and was running extremely well, hitting 5.17 in his semifinal win. So in the final Snow had the edge and he held it with a 5.19 beating LaHaie's 5.23. At Englishtown he qualified #5 with a 5.24/273.63. He beat Jack Ostrander in the first round, but a 5.33/265 in round two lost to Hill's 5.27/270. The next stop was at Seattle for NHRA's Seafair Nationals. Dick ran a great 5.10 at 279.76 to qualify #3, but in the first round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off, losing to Hill. At the NHRA Winston All-Stars event, he again qualified #3 and again lost in the first round, this time to eventual winner Snow. He made it into another final round at Sears Point for the NHRA California Nationals. LaHaie qualified #2 with a 5.20/272.89 and he beat Tim Morgan in the first round, while in round two a 5.27/271 beat Glenn Mikres. In the semifinals, his 5.30 beat a tire-hazing Frank Hawley and advanced him into the final with Amato. The two had a close race, but Joe's 5.17/274 beat Dick's 5.18/272.

Notes: Shirley linked up with Larry Minor this year. Muldowney started her season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. She qualified #12 with a 5.13/281.16. In the first round, she improved to 5.09/270.27 to beat Frank Bradley's better 5.07/276. But in the second round, she smoked the tires and shut down to 12.46/80.60 in a loss to Gary Ormsby's 5.05/279.At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a great 4.97/269.54 qualified #3. Kenny Bernstein's 5.11/270 in the opening round fell to Muldowney's 5.05/262.31. In round two, her 5.01/277.77 stopped Darrell Gwynn's 5.11/270. She faced Ormsby in the semi-final, and the car went into a wheelstand, and she ended up crossing the centerline and was disqualified. Things didn't go so well at Huston for the NHRA Supernationals. Her 5.01/281.16 qualified #7 but a tire-smoking 6.59/207.13 in the first round lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 6.01/267. The NHRA Gatornationals went even worse as she ended up as the first alternate at 5.25/267.45. Early in April, Shirley was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and her 5.12/275.81 qualified on the "bump." Once again, tire smoke did her in as a 15.98/49.92 shut-off run in round one lost to Gwynn's 5.04/278. More problems followed the team to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. She qualified #13 at 5.13/278.66, but a troubled 8.55/98.46 fell to Bradley's 5.09/273 in the first round. Bradley got her again in the first round at Memphis, where she lost a motor. Shirley qualified #10 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.16. She got past the first round at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.22/271.24 qualified #11. A quick-leaving 5.31/271 got some "revenge" on Bradley's quicker 5.27 in the first round, but she lost to Mike Brotherton in round two. She had another so-so run at Columbus, where her 5.24/267.30 "only" qualified #14 for the NHRA Springnationals. She upset Eddie Hill in the first round with a 5.26/268.89 before losing to Dick Lahaie's 5.19/270 in round two with an up-in-smoke 6.63/138.46. The next stop was the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.20/270.27 qualified #6. Shirley took out Paul Smith in round one with a 5.24, but another 5.24 in round two lost to Frank Hawley's 5.11. Shirley was used to running much better than this, and to add to her problems, the transporter was vandalized in the pits at Englishtown during the running of the NHRA Summernationals. She had qualified #8 with a 5.07/264.78 and lost to Bernstein in the first round.NHRA's next event was the Mile High Nationals at Denver. Muldowney qualified #7 at 5.42/228.19, but her 5.66/249.72 lost to Bradley's 5.56/253 in round one. Her best ET of 4.975 was at NHRA Phoenix. Shirley ran her best speed of 281.16 at both the Winters and Houston. We formerly listed 298 for Shirley this year. Can anyone provide any info on when she went 298?

Notes: This was Dan's last year of competition. Pastorini started his season by qualifying #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.33/272.47. In the opening round of competition, his 5.24/262.31 lost to the eventual winner Dick LaHaie's 5.20/277. At Darlington, for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 for the eight-car field, and his 5.52/260.11 in the first round, lost to Joe Amato's 5.27/278. The following week (March 20), Dan was at Gainesville, where his 5.32 qualified #14 for the NHRA Gatornationals. This time Gene Snow stopped him in the opening round. He finished #7 two years in a row. Photo from Columbus 1988. Dan ran his best NHRA times of the year on a 5.285/281.69 DNQ effort at the World Finals. Where was the 5.207 run?

Notes: Walt was at Irwindale for the fourth annual Grand Premiere race on Jan 5th. He was one of 30 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Rhoades failed to qualify, but he was the first alternate, and when #12 qualifier Shorty Leventon broke and was unable to run in eliminations, Walt took his place in the field. He almost made it all the way. A 6.24/224.43 in the first round, beat Stan Shiroma, while a round two 6.21/217.91 took out Gary Hazen. He fell off to 6.37/230.76 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Gary Ritter's late 6.31/226. In the final, he went up against James Warren. Walt ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.18/236.13, but so did Warren, whose winning 6.01/239 was good for both Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. Walt's speeds were very impressive for a Donovan-powered car at the time. Shortly after that, he was at Antelope Valley for a best-of-three-match race against John Zendejas. In the first race, Rhoades shut off,9.07/112.21 won when John had to shut down on the line with a fuel leak. Zendejas also had problems in their second race and shut down to 10.72/102, while Walt scored the MR victory with a 7.02/208.33. They still ran a third race, and Walt reset the track record to 7.00 while running 209.73 to beat John's 8.87/174. Another good showing came at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #16 in 32 car field and ran 236.84 mph. He lasted until round two before losing. Two weeks later, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West event. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.34/201.34. Once again, he lasted until round two, where he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Warren's 6.23/226. Walt won over an eight-car field at Sacramento in April. Twenty cars had attempted to qualify, so it was a tough show. Walt's first-round 6.43 beat Jim Herbert, and in the semifinals, he got one back from Warren when his 6.34 beat a tire-smoking 8.35 from James. In the final, he faced Dwight Salisbury. Rhoades picked up the victory with a final 6.26/213.59. At the Irwindale Fox Hunt race in May, the final came down to Warren vs. Rhoades, and this time, James made his way back into the winner's circle. It was Warren who stopped Walt again at the Northern Nationals at Fremont. Only this time, it happened in the first round. Walt's 6.19/234.98 lost to Warren's 5.99/238. Warren would go on to win the race. At the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Sacramento, Walt again lost in the first round, this time to Dwight Hughes. | In NHRA national event action, Walt did not qualify at the Pomona Winternationals with a 6.150/238.72. He qualified at Indy with a 6.116/235.00 and defeated Gaines Markley in round one, despite receiving no time. Walt fell to Gary Beck in round two, 6.083/231.36 to 6.234/232.55. Walt got a 'five' at the Ontario Supernationals, but his 5.994/235.60 did not qualify in that unreal field led by Garlits' 5.637 and anchored by Stan Shiroma's 5.932.

Notes: Clive competed in the US for the '77 season. He lived in Balboa, California, when racing in the states. Clive ran 6.20/241.93 at the PRO race at Beeline, Arizona, on 1/14/77. At the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson, he qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.53. In the opening round, his 6.47/189.06 beat Paul Longenecker and his 6.39 beat Larry Dixon, but his engine broke while winning, and he was unable to run in the semifinals. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he failed to make the show (times not available). He was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he advanced past a broken Terry Capp in the first round, and, in round two, beat Frank Bradley. Unfortunately, he lost in the third round. Still, he had run well, hitting a best of 6.03. Skilton lasted until the semifinals at the AHRA Springnationals at Tulsa. He beat Johnny Abbott in the first round, before losing to eventual winner Jeb Allen. On June 5, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.49/205.95. But he hurt his engine in qualifying and was unable to run in the first round. His Donovan was making some power the following week (June 12) at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.095/231.36 qualified #10, and in the first round, his 6.27/209.79 beat a wheelstanding Tony Ceraolo. In round two, he advanced with a 6.57/193.13 when Sid Seeley failed to fire. In the semifinals, he stepped up to 6.08/230.76 in beating Abbott's 6.11/227. This put him into the final against Shirley Muldowney. While you would have thought Shirley would have an easy win, Clive made her work for it. Shirley's 6.11/236 got her the victory over Skilton's 6.15/228.42 runner-up effort. The next week, he attended his first IHRA event, the Springnationals at Bristol. It was supposed to run on June 19, but rain postponed it until June 26. He made a good account of himself, qualifying #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.32/225. But Clive lost to Walt Barbin in the first round. He was the low qualifier at Alamo Dragway on July 3 for the AHRA Nationals with a track record 6.25 at 217.39. It was an eight-car show, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Jimmy Edwards. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Clive qualified #9 with a 6.09/236.22. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Muldowney. Skilton smoked the tires to a losing 6.38/195 while Shirley advanced with a 6.11/238. Clive made it all the way to the semifinals at Indy with a fabulous showing. He ran best times of 6.037/236.84 and defeating three competitors before falling to Richard Tharp in a thrilling 6.134/238.09 to 6.150/233.76 decision. Clive qualified on the bump at the World Finals with an even better 6.019/214.28 but lost to Dennis Baca in round one, 6.01/243 to 6.114/231.36. Truly a terrific season and one that brought an international flavor to the NHRA.

He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.44/222, but he lost to Marvin Schwartz in the opening round. He also went to Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals, where he ran a best of 6.30/227. John was at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ended up as the second alternate with a 6.23 best (speed not reported). Ran 6.201/219.51 at the Indy Nationals for the fourth alternate spot. That was the team's last NHRA national event this year.
