Notes: Pat was at Connecticut in August for an eight-car show. Both alcohol FC's and dragsters competed. His 7.09 qualified #7 and he picked up to 6.93/200.44 in the opening round to beat Jeff Rapp's 6.98/196. He improved even more in the semifinal with a 6.88/200.89 defeating Dick Bell's 6.96/202. Walsh went up against Dale Hall in the final. Unfortunately, heavy tire shake forced him to shut down to a 9.95 loss to Hall's winning 6.82.

Notes: Shelly was impressive at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals. She qualified #3 with a 4.79/297.91 and went on to win the race. Anderson had a bit of luck along the way as in the first round, both she and Clayton Harris smoked the tires with her 6.43/185.03 getting the win. In round two, Shelly's 4.87/293.06 beat Mike Brotherton's 5.03/285, and another tire-smoking 6.53/146.60 advanced in the semifinals when Pat Austin lost a blower. In the final, she met Top Fuel veteRance McDaniel and her 5.46/178.74 got the win over Rance's 7.42/107. At NHRA's second event, the Quality Care Nationals at Arizona, she continued to qualify well, running 4.81/292.77 for the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, a 4.98/244.83 in the first round, loss to Mike Dunn's 4.86/277 in Darrell Gwynn's car. The next race was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 4.79/292.30 qualified #6, and she lasted until the second round, where she crossed the centerline while running Scott Kalitta. Shelly was #6 again at the NHRA Gatornationals, where a 4.88/290.88 got her the spot. Anderson won an excellent first-round race against Eddie Hill, where his 4.92/293 lost to her 4.89/291.16. In round two, her tires broke loose, and she shut off to 9.91/83.54 that lost to Bobby Baldwin. Keith Black, BAE combination was banned after the 1994 season. (We need confirmation). ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. The 4.718/302.11 best NHRA times were the low qualifier at the Pomona Finals. Shelly topped 300 a few other times as well.

Notes: Bucher was at Englishtown on May 7 for the NHRA Division One Opener. His 6.27/208.33 qualified #2, and in the first round, he ran 6.35/203.61 to beat Dale Thierer's 6.45/223 in the "Jim & Allison Lee" car. But the car broke on the line for his semifinal match with the race's eventual winner Shirley Muldowney. On May 21, Larry was at Cayuga for the NHRA Division One race. Unfortunately, an off-pace 6.72/204.54 lost to the eventual winner Hank Endres' 6.46/214. In June, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic race. His 6.39 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. He got a first-round solo when John Camamis lost fire. Bucher advanced with a 6.51/187.50. But in the semifinals, he got crossed up and lost to Endres' 6.19/211. Hank would go on to win this race too. The following week (June 25), he was at Maryland International for the third NHRA Division One race. In the opening round of eliminations, he had a good close race against Dale Thierer that saw his 6.35/182.18 come out on top over Dale's hard-charging 6.37/229. He got a solo in the semifinal when Endres failed to show, and Larry ran a motor saving 8.90 to advance. He faced Howard Haight in the final, and both had problems, but Buchers' was worse as he slowed to a 9.41/96.35 runner-up finish to Howard's winning 7.06/182. He was runner-up again on July 2 at the "NED" Gold Cup Championships at Empire Dragway in New York. He had Top Speed of the meet at 227.84, but an off pace 6.78/169.81 lost in the final to Endres. Larry was the second alternate at NHRA Englishtown at 6.230 but suffered a huge wheelstand. In August, he competed at the New England Championships. It was an eight-car show, and he soloed in round one, when Dick Allard broke. His 6.47/166 advanced. However, Lary's semifinal proved to be costly as his motor-blowing 7.53/126 lost to the eventual winner Haight's 6.67/166. He did not race any other NHRA national events in 1978.

Notes: Steve was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost to Jerry Ruth in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.81/228.42 qualified #4 in the 32 car field. He beat Jeb Allen in round one, before losing to Dennis Baca in round two. Steve qualified #1 at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.40/238.09, but he shut off on the line in the first round, advancing eventual winner Dwight Salisbury into round two. At the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont, Carbone qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field but lost to John Wiebe in the first round. The following week (March 18), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Steve qualified third at the 1973 NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.104/242.58. He beat Jon Hansen in the first round, with a 6.306/228.42 to 6.38/233 and Flip Schofield in the second with a 6.197/226.13 to 6.35/208 before losing fire against Jim Bucher in the semifinals. Qualifying #3 was quite impressive, considering that 50 cars attempted to make the sixteen-car field. On April 1, he was at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Division Four opener. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but a blower exploded in the opening round, and he lost to Vic Brown. Carbone had more trouble a couple of weeks later at the AHRA Grand American at Tulsa. There, his car broke on the line in the first round. On July 4, he was at Cornhusker for a best of three match race against Don Garlits. In their first race, Steve's 6.46/207.85 beat Don's 6.74/204. Carbone seemed assured of winning the match in their second race when his 6.27/210 beat Garlits' 6.67/213. Even though Carbone had won the match, the two came out for a final race. Garlits won by default as Carbone's car lost fire this time." Big Daddy" ran 6.33/227. The track record at Cornhusker before this race had been John Wiebe's 6.73/223. So Carbone was now the track ET record holder while Garlits got the speed end. At the 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway. Top Fuel Eliminator, Qualifying. In the "Soapy Sales" dragster (near lane), Steve Carbone was the ninth qualifier at 6.59/223 but killed an engine and could not appear for the first-round. (Bret Kepner info). Steve also ran 6.47 at Phoenix.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1980. National Dragster listed Albuquerque, NM, as Tony's hometown when he ran at Sanair 1980. | I can confirm that Ceraolo lived in Albuquerque at that time. He had moved there to be close to family (elderly mother I think) and was only there a short time (maybe 2 years). He did run at least one time at Albuquerque Dragway while living there. - Lyle Greenberg

Notes: Photo from Indy 1980. Where was the 5.72/247.93 run? | Tony qualified #12 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.95/233.16, but a 6.02 in the first round, lost to Jeb Allen's 5.87/245. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran a career-best (by two tenths) of 5.76/246.57 to qualify #5. But once again he went down in the first round, this time, the car was at fault as it was stuck in reverse giving Butch Osmon a single into the second round. Ceraolo attempted to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his best of 5.91 failed to make the eight-car field. He did get a runner-up finish at the NHRA Eastern Regional in May at Englishtown when Doug Kerhulas stopped him for the money. Tony qualified #7 on May 24 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but in the first round, against Terry Capp, he pitched a blower. He was close to making the field on June 27 at Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. A 6.11/229.60 was good for #1 alternate. Shortly after that, he raced at Indianapolis for the NHRA Eastern Regional where his 6.10 did make (#7) the show. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.26/211.76 lost to Jim Head's 5.99/228. At the NHRA Summernationals, he again ran well, but his best of 5.99/231.36 was again #1 alternate. He traveled up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but again failed to qualify (5.99/236.22).

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Frank qualified #10 at the NHRA Supernationals and beat a tire-smoking Darrell Gwynn in the first round. A second round 5.07/273.14 beat Rudy Toepke, but in the semifinals, Cook smoked the tires and lost to Gary Ormsby. He failed to qualify at the Gatornationals, but was able to make the field in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals with a 5.27/265.48 for #14 spot. Another 5.27 in the first round, at 275.39 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.11/275. At the sixth race of the season, the Cajun Nationals, Frank set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.12/270.51. Unfortunately, he lost to Dick LaHaie in the first round. He showed that his qualifying was no fluke when he showed up at the Springnationals and ran a 5.08/279.41 for the #4 qualifying spot. Once again he lost in the first round, this time to Jim Head. He bypassed the Grandnationals in Canada, but was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.19/272.39 qualified #8 and he did beat Shirley Muldowney in the first round, but he hurt some parts while winning and was unable to run in round two. The next event was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. In the thin air, he ran a 5.40/259.51 to qualify #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gene Snow that Frank lost. The next event on the schedule was the California Nationals. Cook qualified #10 with a 5.14/278.29. A first-round 5.19/269.62 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.09/289. He picked up the pace at the Seafair Nationals, running a 5.06/281.51 to qualify #4. A first-round 5.07/283.55 beat Jack Ostrander and in round two a 5.09/276.92 beat Dennis Forcelle. In the semifinals, he slipped to a 5.22/275.39 that lost to LaHaie's 5.11/281. At the Northstar Nationals, he qualified #12 and he fouled against Muldowney in the first round. He managed to qualify at the US Nationals at Indy with a 5.10/277.17 giving him the #12 spot. He lost to Joe Amato in the first round. It was then off to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. Frank used a 5.06/285.98 to qualify #10, but once again was stopped in the first round. This time, Gwynn stopped him with a 5.00/281 to Cook's 5.18/285.62.

Notes: Ran 5.922 Indy US Nationals 9/79. | Larry showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #12, but in round one, he lost to eventual winner Bob Noice. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.07/233.16 qualified #9 which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shirley Muldowney. The lady won their race with a 6.24/245 over Larry's 6.28/238.72. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown, beating Larry Bucher in the final. At the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals, Dixon qualified #5 in the eight-car field, forcing him another first-round race with the low qualifier for the show. It was Muldowney again and once again she beat him in the opening round. Over 30 Top Fuel teams showed up to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals and a 6.02/227.27 qualified Larry in the #7 spot. Unfortunately, an off-pace 6.24/205.47 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.02/240 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. On June 24 he was at Maryland International for another NHRA Division 1 race. This time he finished runner-up to Howard Haight. He then won the Divisional race at Suffolk where he stopped Bobby Hilton driving the "Jim and Allison Lee" car in the final. Back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Larry ran 6.04/240.00 to qualify #15. He was still having trouble getting past the first-round in national events and once again he lost in the opening round, this time to Don Garlits. The team then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where a 6.07/234.37 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.13 lost to eventual winner Tharp's 5.90. At the fourth NHRA Division 1 race held at Maple Grove, Dixon lasted until the semifinals before he lost to Kerry Sweigert. At the final Division 1 race at New England, Larry beat Ron Mumma in the first round, with a 6.15/238.72, but a sub-par 6.43/229.59 in the semifinals lost to Muldowney's 6.07/240. It was then off to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals where a 5.92/243.90 qualified #15 for the 32 car field. He beat Hilton in the first round, to get past his first-round jinx and in round two a 5.99/241 beat Garlits who smoked the tires. In round three, a 5.97/241.28 beat Dave Settles close 6.01/238 in the "Blue Max" dragster. A 6.03 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Kelly Brown's 5.85. Still, it was a very good outing for the team. They then went to Gainesville for the final NHRA Division 2 race. The field had only seven cars show for the eight available spots. Dixon qualified #1 with a 6.37 and took the odd-lot solo in the first round, and ran 6.58/206.89. He had another easy run in the semifinals when Marvin Schwartz failed to fire and a 6.27/226.13 advanced. He faced Hilton in the final where his 6.68/234.37 lost to Bobby's 6.29/234. The next stop was at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Larry qualified #7 with a 5.94/243.24. An easy 6.20/231.95 won his first-round race when Dwight Salisbury broke a transmission. But in round two, Doug Kerhulas' 6.07/223 beat his 6.10/233.16. The season didn't end the greatest for Dixon. He went to Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals and ran a strong 5.99/232.55 to qualify #5 for the show, but in the first round, his opponent Terry Capp had his brakes fail and he rolled through the lights. Larry was able to solo into round two, but on his pass he crossed the centerline and was disqualified. The team did run well enough to finish the season #8 in the NHRA standings.

Notes: New rear-engine dragster in 1973. On April 15, Jim was at Cecil County for its National Open. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.79 qualified #7. He had a coasting contest with Paul Longenecker in the first round when both cars broke. Grace's 10.42/87.37 beat Longenecker's 22.26/31. But the car was still not right for the semifinal, as it died on the line against eventual winner Dale Thierer. In May, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. This was another eight-car show, and his 6.48 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Thierer. Dale blew a head gasket in their race and slowed to 7.77 while Jim advanced at 6.75/166.05. In the semifinal, his 6.45/221.13 fell to Flip Schofield's 6.31/210. Jim qualified #6 at NHRA Englishtown at 6.195/225.56. He lost to Marvin Schwartz in round one, 6.33/227 to 6.533/220.04. That was his only NHRA national event of the year. Jim also ran 6.29 at Atco. Front engine dragster in 1972, then switched to RED in 1973. Oberhofer father of Jim & Dave Oberhofer

Notes: You had to wonder what happened to Clayton Harris in '73. He had been on top of the world in '72, with many saying that he was the next Don Garlits of the sport. He set records everywhere during the '72 season, but that all changed in '73. The performance just wasn't there as it had been the year before. Yet despite that, he won his only NHRA title at the Summernationals at a race he didn't even qualify for, and he won the NHRA Division 2 title. Harris' '73 season started unspectacularly at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the show, but he lost early. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #19 in the 32 car field with a 7.13/218.44. Traction was horrible, and low qualifier was in at 6.75. Clayton did well in eliminations, however. He won the first-round over Danny Ongais, 6.772/221.13 to 7.002/225.56. He then took it easy at 10.15/73 when Ray Stutz lost fire in round two. In round three, he lost ran quicker than his opponent but lost to a fast, leaving Jack Martin, 6.876/223.32, to Clayton's 6.794/220.58. The next big event was the Bakersfield March Meet. It was another 32 car show, and his 6.55 qualified #7. He lasted until round two, where an off-pace 6.97 lost to Jim Herbert's 6.71. Gainesville was his next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. He looked strong in qualifying, running 6.25 and 6.21. The 6.210 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field, but he fireballed an engine in round one, while losing to Pat Dakin. In April, he was at Phenix City for the NHRA Division 2 race, where he finished runner-up to Flip Schofield in a 6.64 to 6.65 final. On April 29, he was running really well for the second Division 2 race at Suffolk. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final while winning over Schofield with a 6.02/229.34. That was probably one of his best showings of the year. The following week (May 6), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 with a 6.28, and in the opening round, his 6.77 beat Alan Starr's 6.90. In round two, a slower run of 6.66/211.26 won over John Hilton's 6.80/201. His run ended in the semifinals, where eventual winner Tommy Ivo's 6.33/226 beat his 6.44/227.00. Beech Bend held its third annual Memorial Day Championships, and while Harris didn't reach the final, he did reset the track record to 6.12. He faced off against Jeb Allen at a best of three match race at Englishtown. Unfortunately, he lost all three races. He debuted his new Peek Bros. -built car at the NHRA Springnationals. Clayton qualified #2 with a 6.289/233.16, but in round one, his ailing 7.068/168.85 lost to Dakin's 6.458/210.77. The car did much better at Bristol the following week (June 17) for the IHRA Springnationals. He ran 6.40 over Jim Hundley in round one, and a 6.33 took out Charlie Moulder in round two, and in the semifinals, he picked up to a 6.25 over Ivo. This put him in the final against Marvin Schwartz. Clayton was late in, and despite setting Low ET at 6.22 (at 231.00), he lost to Marvin's 6.30/230. He then won the Division 2 race at Blaney, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.29 (Low ET). A first-round 6.41/198.66 beat Dale Thierer and a 7.27/167 advanced over Don Plunkett in the semifinals. A slow 7.06/190.06 was enough to win over Don Powell's 7.76/208 Chevy effort in the final. Then came the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Not only did Harris fail to qualify, but he was also actually the second alternate for the field. When Gary Beck broke, Chuck Kurzawa was the first alternate and was asked to fill in. He was unable to, so Harris was put into the show. In the opening round, Herm Petersen fouled against him, and Harris advanced with a 9.10. In round two, Dave Settles failed to show, so a solo 10.78 advanced into the semifinals. He faced Schwartz and Marvin had his 'chute fall out, so Harris' tire-smoking 7.30 entered the finals. His opponent was none other than Jim Bucher's strong Chevy-powered car that had been running 6.30s on the way to the final. No one gave Harris much of a chance in the final, but Bucher's Chevy broke, and Harris sputtered and popped to an 8.72/149.50 for his only NHRA victory. His best ET in eliminations had only been a 7.30! Sometimes you can't beat racer's luck. He ended the month of July by winning the Division 2 race at Miami-Hollywood, where Moulder fouled in the final and Harris' 6.25/218.44 got the win. If July had been good to him, August was not. He went to Canada and was helping Moulder attempt to get his car qualified and broke his leg. He had already qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.35 but was unable to race. Because of his injury, Moulder was going to drive Harris' car at the PHR Championships, but the team failed to qualify with some 40 cars attempting to make the sixteen-car field. Dale Funk drove Clayton's car at the NHRA World Finals, qualifying with a 6.50 and winning a 6.29 to 6.50 contest over Dave Settles in round one. But another 6.50 fell to Gaines Markley's 6.30 in round two. | Did Clayton run 5.92/234.98 and 233.76 somewhere in 1973? We formerly listed those times but need confirmation.
