Notes: At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Anderson ran 6.38/226.70 to qualify #11. He had problems in the first round against Tom Hoover and shut off to 9.83. Tom was the second alternate for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.51/227.27 best. At NHRA Columbus, he hit 6.38 again (speed unavailable) but was the third alternate. In July, the team was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.11 (Low ET), but he smoked the tires in the first round he shut down to a losing 11.90. A 6.34 (speed unavailable) made him the second alternate at Sanair. The team took a massive jump in performance with a 6.088/236.84 #11 qualifying effort at Indy. Unfortunately, Tom lost a close 6.15/236 to 6.185/237.46 decision in round one to Raymond Beadle. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the season. Was he in the Omni by Indy?

Notes: At the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Larry qualified 5th with a 6.455/225.56. He lost in the first round to Tom Raley when the car lost the blower belt. Shortly after, he was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. It was a 32-car field, and he got a first-round solo. Arnold ran 6.50/163.13 to advance. In round two, the car got sideways, and he shut off in a loss to Gary Burgin.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1993. Ran this 5.11 at Winternats - beating John Force - except he hit the top end timing cones, negating the time & losing the race. | Whit qualified #12 with a 5.26/285.08 at the NHRA Winternationals, and as mentioned above, defeated Force with a career-best 5.11, but was disqualified for crossing the centerline while hitting the cones. At the second NHRA race of the season, the Arizona Nationals, Whit qualified #8 with a 5.26/276.83. He lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.30/268 in the first round, when he lost a motor and the car caught fire. Bazemore brought the car to a stop and he was OK. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, only 17 cars showed so qualifying was relatively easy. Whit qualified on the "bump" with a 9.97/81.54. Unfortunately, that meant that he had to run low qualifier John Force in round one. Whit ran a strong 5.24/261.32, but lost to Force's 5.18/282. Gainesville was the fourth stop on the NHRA schedule and Whit qualified #12 with a 5.40/248.20. He beat Del Worsham in the first round, with a 5.26/262.31. In round two, an off pace 5.50/209.10 lost to Gary Bolger's 5.32/268. The non-points race, the NHRA Winston Invitational, was Bazemore's next stop. He ran a motor-blowing 5.53/198.23 to qualify last in the eight-car field, but the resulting fire from the blown engine did too much damage to the car and he was unable to run in eliminations. The car was repaired and ready for Atlanta and the NHRA Southern Nationals in late April. A 5.24/280.28 qualified #8. In the first round, the motor let go while beating Jim Epler with a 5.33/236.71 and he was unable to return for round two. Mid-May found the Fast Orange team at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where they qualified #10 with a 5.51/272.14. Whit stepped it up to a 5.40/274.22 to beat Cruz Pedregon's 5.40/276 in the first round. A second round 5.43/269.62 lost to Wyatt Radke's 5.35/281. The following week (May 23), the NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals. Whit ran 5.21/280.61 to qualify #7. In the first round, the car broke. The Probe's career came to an end at the NHRA Springnationals. There he had a bad fire and crash that left him with a mild concussion. He was out of a ride until July 10. That was when he first drove Johnny West's car.

Notes: Gordie had a fabulous year in 1979. He won the Gatornationals, the US Nationals, and the World Finals. His Indy 5.979 was the 4th entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club. | Gordie started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the field, but he lost early. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 but lost to Tripp Shumake driving Johnny Loper's Arrow in the first round. Bonin always seemed to run well at Gainesville, and '79 was no exception. His 6.38 qualified #12, and his 6.47 advanced over a crossed-up Shumake in the opening round. In round two, he soloed with a 6.92/221 when Al Segrini could not run. More luck came his way in the semifinals when Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," broke at half-track, and Gordie's 6.93/223 got the win. He faced Tom Hoover in the final and got a great leave that saw his 6.93/224.43 hold on for the victory over Hoover's quicker 6.84/227. A holeshot also won him the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway. There, a final round 6.66/216.78 beat John Force's 6.62. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.20/236.22 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Segrini who was driving the "Custom Body" car. Bonin slipped to a 6.58/187.11 that lost to Al's 6.16/230. Although he failed to make the finals at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he did qualify #2 with a 6.39. H did not race at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals.

The team had lots of problems and the best they could run was 6.25/151.31. The following week, they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes was having a rough time getting the car to hook up. A 5.36/273.97 got them into the show in the #15 spot. But an opening round 5.42/247.72 lost to eventual winner Cruz Pedregon's 5.14/285. The NHRA Arizona Nationals went even worse. Hughes was trying out a different engine combination. Gordie made runs of 7.05, 11.59, 5.54, and 6.05. His 5.54/274.30 ended up as the second alternate for the show. The NHRA Slick 50 Nationals was another tough race for the team. Bonin qualified #15 with a 5.56/258.69 and he lost to John Force in the opening round. Gordie qualified #12 at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.34/278.81. An opening round 5.39/270.43 beat Gary Clapshaw, but he lost to Chuck Beal in round two. The team eventually got it sorted out and had a pretty good season. Best NHRA national event ET was a 5.137 at the Ennis Fall event.

Notes: After five years out of the sport, Caminito returned in 1979. Jerry did not run any NHRA national events in 1979. Jerry was at Richmond Dragway in August for the NHRA Division Two race. Only six cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field. In the opening round, his 6.96/146.10 lost to Dominic Santucci's 6.77/177. Photo from a PHR centerfold, which stated that the new car had gone a best of 6.56/229.59. We need to validate the date of this PHR issue. It seems suspect as Jerry ran 6.56/229.59 in the early 1981 NHRA competition. It's possible he also ran these exact times in 1979, but let's validate.

Notes: Rookie season as a fuel car. Les was runner-up to Jim Liberman at Maple Grove in June for the NHRA Division 1 race. He when to Suffolk on July 18 for its twice rained-out NHRA Division Two race. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. In August, he was at Empire Dragway for its Gold Cup Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.60/185.95 beat Roy Harris' 6.78/207 in the "Brutus" Mustang II. In the semifinal, a troubled 7.18/131.19 lost to Dodger Glenn's 6.57/194 in the "Frantic Ford." Les ran 6.32 at New England in September 1976. A 6.18/200.00 shut-off run at New England in October 1976 was the quickest Donovan AA/FC pass in history (even with steel heads). Reportedly never ran faster than 207.85, running quickly but shutting off to save parts. AKA Sundance Kid.

Notes: John started the season at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.94/197. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gordie Bonin. He lost that race when his 6.77/216 fell to Bonin's 6.65/219. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 6.21/234.37 but his 6.43/194.38 lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 6.15/238 in the first round. He barely made the show at the Gatornationals, qualifying #16 with a 6.143/241.28. The car went into a wheelstand in the first round, and he shut off, losing to Dale Pulde. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. This was only an eight-car field, and his 6.64 best was well off the 6.16 "bump." The following weekend (May 3), he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3. He failed to reach the finals. John went to St. Louis early in June for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 and then ran 6.56/210.76 in the opening round to beat Larry Gould's quicker but later 6.51/221. He improved by two tenths in the semifinal to a 6.36, but that wasn't enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 6.26. Columbus was his next stop for the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #10 with a 6.23/226.70. He upset Prudhomme in the first round, where Collins' 6.20/239.36 beat the "Snake's" 6.56/175. In round two, he continued to impress, where his 6.31/215 easily defeated Fuzz Miller's 6.61/192. A 6.34/232.55 fell to eventual winner Craig Epperly's 6.29/210 in the semifinal. His best NHRA national event ET was a 6.127 at Englishtown. The Gainesville speed was his fastest number. Where did John run 6.01?

Notes: Crimmins really dominated the NHRA Division One opener held at Englishtown on May 7. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.85. He set Low ET and Top Speed in his opening race with a 6.44/222.77 that beat Dodger Glenn's 6.93/211. Bruce Larson came as close as anyone would as his 6.55/215 lost to Jake's 6.47/213.77 in the semifinals. In the final, he easily beat Les Cassidy for the victory. Jake was at Englishtown in September for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships. Eight cars were to make two runs each, with the Low ET cars advancing into the final. Crimmins' first pass was 7.05/195.65, while he improved to 6.79/205 on his second. Neither run was anywhere near strong enough to reach the final.

Notes: AKA The Kansas Kid. Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The second was held on Saturday and Sunday, March 6/7. Prock won Saturday with a 5.974 at 233.76 mph over Custy. Dick was at Atco Dragway in May for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. In the first round, his 6.74/191.48 beat Fred Goeske's better 6.67/216. But the Coke races were run with all eight cars running the first round, with the four cars that ran the lowest ETs advancing into the final four. Both Goeske and Custy advanced, and they reran each other in the semi-final. This time, Fred's 6.58/222 got the better of Custy, who shut down at 8.16/128. Dick was at Englishtown on June 6 for another Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He smoked the tires in his first-round race against Tripp Shumake. He later came back out to run a consolation race against Al Marshall. Dick ran 6.61, but Al's Mustang ran Low ET to win their match at 6.47. He also ran 6.52/164.83 at OCIR. | Saw this car at the 1976 SIR 64 Funny Car event, completed in the overcast daytime in a rush. It was my last chance to see some early 70s type FCs (Halibrands in front, 6/71s, steel motors). The CC Cavalcade ran their own bracket, Shumake over Custy. - Joe Moore
