Notes: Charlie Proite had one of the first beer sponsors in drag racing, with Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer coming on board for '73. The 114" chassis for the car was built by S&R Race cars. The engine was a Sid Waterman built 426 Hemi that was bored and stroked to 482 cubic inch M/T rods were used as well as Venolia pistons. The cam of choice was by Crower. A solid mounted Dana rear end was used. The car cost $25,000 to build. Long debuted Charlie Proite's new Charger at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified the car #23 with a 6.81/207.37. He picked up to a 6.52/217.91 in the first round, to beat a crossed-up Leroy Goldstein who was driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. But in round two, he slowed to 7.00/210.28, which lost to Jim Paoli's 6.61/213. He was a DNQ at the traction plagued NHRA Winternationals (no times available but no quicker than the 8-second zone). He then went to OCIR for the third All-Pro race. Long failed to qualify for the eight-car field, but he got into the show as an alternate when Gerry Glenn broke in John Lombardo' Vega. Russell didn't hang around long, as in the first round, he shut down at 13.87/55.58 in losing to Mike Halloran's 7.24/141. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Night Opener race. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5. low qualifier Tom McEwen had problems against him in the opening round of eliminations and shut off. Russell advanced with a 6.59/215.82. The "Pabst" Charger got crossed-up in the semifinal, and Long shut it down while Sush Matsubara advanced into the final. He also DNQ at the Gators, finishing as the 7th alternate (times unknown but no quicker than 6.75). Russell drove Proite's car to a win on May 13 at the NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.92 and ran a first-round 7.00/199.11 over an out-of-shape Paul Radici. In the semifinals, a 6.82/202.24 beat Dick Rosberg. In the final, a 6.74/208.81 beat Al Segrini. But at the NHRA national event held in Columbus in June, Long had no luck, ending up as the 8th alternate (no quicker than 7.11). Russell was at Edgewater in July for its fifth annual Funny Car Invitational. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.83 beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" who tossed a blower belt. In the semifinal, Long was becoming a bit of a "giant killer" as his 6.56 (Low ET) beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.81. After knocking off two crowd favorites, the underdog "Pabst Charger" faced Ron Colson, driving another favorite car, the "Chi-Town Hustler," in the final. Colson kept an upset from happening as his 6.77/215 got the victory over Long's 6.89/206.42. The team finally got some NHRA national event luck at the Summernationals. Russell ran 6.553/222.22 for the 7th qualifying position. He lost in round one, to Dale Emery, who ran 6.56/228, as Russell struggled to a 10.84/117. Russell drove Don Schumacher's Wonder Wagon to a DNQ at Indy but was back in the PBR Charger in Ontario for the World Finals. Unfortunately, he was the 11th alternate (no times available but slower than 6.775). |

Notes: AKA Hell's A Fire. I read that in a 1974 report but have it listed as "Ron Gilbert" (which is on the car) and Hell's A Fire from the report. Ron Gilbert was originally from upstate NY, near Jim Wemett. He bought the car from Jim. The Camaro was the Radici & Wise 71 Camaro, then Jim Wemett, then Gilbert, who moved to Orlando. - Dennis Doubleday, 10/23/23 |

Notes: Quickest ET at the time, Beeline AHRA. Chris qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with the 7.42 but lost to Tom Hoover's 7.78/193.96 in the first round, with a 7.80/196.92. He also qualified #1 with a 7.76 (Low ET) at Pomona on March 28 for a sixteen-car UDRA meet. Bill Leavitt's 7.89/192.70 stopped him in the first round, but Chris' losing 7.95/203.16 held for Top Speed. In June, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 7.67/202.70 qualified Chris third, and on Saturday's AA/FD class runoffs, a 7.80/200.88 beat Danny Ongais (7.99/192.70), who fouled. A second-round 7.67/202.70 advanced when the Ramchargers broke, and a 7.93/202.70 got him into the class runoff with Maynard Rupp. There Chris' engine let go, and Rupp won with a 7.99/142.40. Made the finals at NHRA Bristol 65 with a 7.67/202.70 best. Photo from 7/67. |

Notes: Tom Tignanelli worked as a Chrysler technician. He ran a Charger in '69 until his 'chute failed at Columbus and the Charger body was wrecked. Tom was OK and less than a month and a half later, he debuted this Charger Daytona bodied car. It used the same chassis and engine and with the Daytona nose it picked up six miles per hour. The chassis was a 118" Logghe Brothers piece. The car was run in B/Altered. Tom held the record at 143.10, but the new car reset it to 149.5. |
