Notes: The "Gold Digger" used a 120" Logghe chassis. The 426 Hemi used a Reath crank and now displaced 480 cubic inches.MT rods held ForgedTrue pistons, and the cam of choice was Howards. A Gary Dyer prepared GMC 6/71 sat on top of a Cragar intake manifold, and Cragar also supplied the blower drive. The fuel was fed by Enderle injection. A Lenco two-speed was used, and the whole car weighed in at 1,850 lbs. The Mustang body came from Fiberglass Ltd. Gary qualified #9 at NHRA Gainesville at 6.80/214.79. He lost to Pat Foster in round one, 6.64/204 to 6.75/215.31. He qualified #5 at the Springnationals. His times were not listed, but #4 was a 6.80, and #9 was a 6.92, so he was between those two. Gary beat Steve Tansy in round one with a shutting off 11.11 after Tansy broke. Pat Foster got him again in round two, 6.73/215 to 6.87/212.26. The team debuted a new Dodge Charger at IHRA Dragway 42 and then ran NHRA Indy. According to the team, the Mustang's best numbers were 6.64/224. They also ran 6.64 at Tri-City and 6.65 at a match race at National Trail on April 12. We need to validate the 224; the best validated speed is the 215.31 from Gainesville. (See the other entry for the Charger). |

Notes: Gary was running hard in '75. It was a good lead-up to his great '76 season. He started the '75 season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere, qualifying #5 in the sixteen-car show. He lost in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.44 qualified #14. A first-round 6.40/205.47 beat Neil Leffler, but unfortunately, he had crossed the centerline and was disqualified. He ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.46/212.76 qualified #7 in the twelve-car field but had the misfortune of breaking in the first round, against Don Prudhomme. At the Gatornationals, Gary ran 6.42/227.27 to qualify #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in the first round, but lost to Shirl Greer in round two, where he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. His next stop was at Irwindale for the 32-car Coca-Cola Championships. Gary beat an out-of-shape Leroy Chadderton in the opening round with a 6.80/178.92 and an easy 7.43/152.02 advanced past Larry Arnold who got sideways in the Mickey Thompson Grand Am and shut off. In round three, Burgin had another easy run where Norm Wilcox, driving the "Hawaiian," had issues and shut off on the line. But in the semifinals, he broke against Prudhomme, and the "Snake" ran a track record 6.25 to win. In May, he got a runner-up finish to Jake Johnston in the Pisano and Matsubara Vega at the Irwindale Fox Hunt race. Fremont also held a "Fox Hunt" race in May, and it featured the FC's running the Top Fuel cars with a .30 handicap on the 'tree. The cars all made three passes, and in Gary's first run, his 6.55/213 beat Dave Uyehara's Chevy-powered car. The second race was weird as the 'tree was never activated, yet his opponent, Gary Ritter, flew to an apparent win with a 6.71/172 while Burgin shut off on the line. The third round was stranger still: as soon as the 'tree blinked green, he and James Warren roared off, and the power went out. No times were recorded for their runs, but witnesses said that they were flying. Warren crossed the line first. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.50/215.82. A first-round 6.54/211.76 beat Al Segrini's 6.68/201 in the "Black Magic" Vega. But in round two, his 6.58/221.13 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.45/205. Gary was back at Irwindale for its Doubleheader (motorcycles and FC) event. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.72/197.80 beat a tire-smoking Arnold who was now driving the "Lil' Demon." But a 6.76/208.33 failed to get past Jim Dunn's 6.57/210 in the semifinal. He had an interesting outing at the first NHRA Division 7 race at Sacramento. He soloed in the first round, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 6.55/211.77. In the semifinals, he made another single at 6.73/161 when Dunn's Satellite broke. In the final, he went up against Roger Garten. It wasn't much of a race as Burgin had an oil fire on the line and shut off while Garten grabbed the win. Near the end of June, he competed at the OCIR Nitro Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. On July 13, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.29/222.22. He advanced past a broken Bill Leavitt in the first round, with a 6.54/204.80. In round two, he smoked the tires and lost to McCulloch. The following week (July 20) found Gary at Minnesota for the third NHRA Division 5 race. It was only a four-car show, and Burgin won quite easily, setting low et and Top Speed in the final with a 6.67/221.67 over Carl Swanson's 6.97/200. He also won the next Division 5 race at Bison Dragways in Manitoba. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 6.69/222.22, and in the final beat Topper Kramer's 7.06/184 with a 6.73/222.22. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Gary didn't run as well as he would have liked. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5 with a 6.60/213.27, putting him in a first-round match with low qualifier Prudhomme. Gary's off pace 6.75/216.86 lost to the "Snake's" 6.47/212. The fourth NHRA Division 7 race was held at Bonneville Raceway on August 17, and the Funny Car field was again reduced to just four cars. Gary's 6.84/201.27 qualified #2, but in the first round, he was upset by Dennis Geisler's 6.65/199 in the "Lil' Demon" that beat his 6.94/204. Burgin ran 6.313/203.61 and 6.47/184.42 in winning the Funny Car Race of Champions at Englishtown, NJ, in August 1975. He had won Division 7 in 1974. - RT | Photo from Indy 1975. - MS | Ran 6.31/228.42 at Indy US Nationals 9/75. |

Notes: The day of the Chevy-powered FCs had come and gone, but no one was about to tell that to this team. Fritz was at Dallas on March 15 for the season opener. He lost two straight against Jake Johnston in the "Blue Max" before Jake fouled away a 7.26 in their last race. Callier won the Mr. Chevrolet race held at Gary, Indiana, on April 25. It was a six-car field with all drivers making at least two runs. Fritz ran 7.85/193 to beat Tony Wahlay's 7.86/190 in the "Warlord," and a 7.51/207 defeated Dick Harrell's 7.57/204 in his second race. That got him into the final against Randy Walls, and the "CKC" team took the victory with a 7.78/203 over Walls' 7.98/196. In June, he qualified #1 at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals with a 7.40. He beat Marv Eldridge's Corvette in the first round, and a second-round 7.74/189.86 topped Curtis Wasson's 7.75. He advanced into the final with a solo 9.10 when Dick Harrell lost fire. In the final, he ran Gene Snow. Callier tried hard, but his 7.77/187.10 finished runner-up to Gene's 7.35/205.00 (Top Speed). |

Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Chadwick is well-known in two different fields. In Texas, as a girls’ basketball coach and nationwide as a premier drag racer. Don Hardy built all of Kelly Chadwick's cars, including the pictured Camaro. The beautiful 1969 Camaro was his third funny car and his first with a flip top and tube chassis. Chadwick had raced the "Wild Thing" Chevy II and the "Wild Thing II" Camaro, mainly in the Southwest. The Camaro was the first car he took on a national tour. Chadwick joined the original Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars and was said to be the champion in 1969. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki) - BS | Did he run 7.22/209 in 69/70? | Kelly Chadwick had Don Hardy built him a new Camaro for '69. The car used a 427 Chevy. Mondello did the heads, and Don Hardy prepared the blower. A Hilborn four-port injector unit fed the 60% nitro mixture. Howards supplied the cam. A TorqueFlite transmission transferred the power back to a Pontiac rear with 3.90 gears. | Chadwick started the season by qualifying eleventh with an 8.298/187.89 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Clare Sanders' 8.09 beat his 8.53/161.57 in the first round. On April 27 at Amarillo, Texas, he won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race beating Fred Goeske in the final with track records of 7.82/192.70. Kelly beat Jack Chrisman with an 8.18 in the first round, and he the semifinal, he fouled against Norm Weekly, but Mr. Norm's Charger had engine trouble and couldn't repair for the final, so Chadwick was reinstated. In May, he was at Capitol for the "Mr. Chevrolet" Invitational. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.68/193.96, but in the second round, the Camaro got sideways while racing Malcolm Durham, and he shut down to an 8.96/179.64 loss. Epping held a Cavalcade race on June 15. Kelly lost his first race to Gary Dyer's 7.76/186. He did win his second race with a 7.71/188.28 over a fouling Jess Tyree (7.90/177). In the final, Dyer ran a track-record 7.55 over Kelly's 7.97/164.50 runner-up effort. Later in June, he did win at the Maple Grove Cavalcade race, where he beat Dyer in the final for the win. On July 3, Chadwick picked up another Coca-Cola Cavalcade win at US 30, Gary, Indiana. It was his third Cavalcade win in a row. He beat Ken Safford in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang in the first round, with a 7.68/196, and in the second round, he beat Jess Tyree's Firebird with a 7.71/199. In the final, he beat Marv Eldridge's 7.98/188 with a 7.66/200. Another Coca-Cola Cavalcade race was run at National Trail on August 17, where Chadwick broke a driveshaft in his first race and watched Dick Bourgeois single to an 8.17 win. In his second race, against Marv Eldridge, he won with a 7.79 when Marv broke. In his third race, an 8.78 beat Chrisman's ailing Mustang at 9.40. Dyer won the race in the Mr. Norm car. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 7.543/195.22 qualified Chadwick sixteenth. But in the first round, he stepped it up to a 7.383/196.93 to beat Bobby Wood’s 7.55/199. In round two, Danny Ongais' 7.38 put him on the trailer. On September 20 at Dallas International, he competed in an eight-car show. A first-round 7.52 beat Fritz Callier's 7.69. But a 7.29/204 from Gene Snow in the semifinal dropped his 7.48/194.38. Another win came his way on October 18 at Lions for its Cavalcade race. He ran a 7.53/177.86 over Tyree in the first round, and a second-round 7.47/190.67 beat Eldridge's 7.76/181. In the final, Bob Smith in the Invader fouled away a Low ET of the meet 7.26/193.13, letting Chadwick cruise to an 8.06/138.46 win. At the Lions fifth annual East/West Championships on October 25, he lost to Jim Liberman's 8.06/175 in the first round, with an ailing 10.00. He competed at the Sears Point North/South Championships on November 2 but lost to Lew Arrington's 7.89/194 before the finals. He managed to qualify third for the GM team with a 7.71 for the OCIR Manufacturer's meet on November 7. The following day, a much better 7.47/196.06 beat Rusty Delling's 7.63/191 in his first race. A series of wheelstands did in any chance of winning against Larry Reyes' 7.40/202 in his second race. And a 7.85 in his third race beat a quicker Tony Weathers' 7.75. A Coke circuit ad cited best times of 7.51/195.83 at the time. - Ron Howard |

Notes: If there was one thing you could say about the "Candies and Hughes" team: it was high class all the way. Paul Candies and Leonard Hughes had been running a Barracuda Funny Car for quite a while prior to the '72 season. Their '71 car held the NHRA national record at 6.80. They hired Leroy Goldstein to drive, and he continued into the '72. The team had Woody Gilmore of Race Car Engineering build them two cars for '72 with a few differences in Leroy's car compared to the second machine driven by Hughes. Goldstein's car was supposed to run in match race competition, while Hughes ran the major events. They were not cheap, costing Candies $25,000 each. Goldstein's car had a 122" wheelbase and a Keith Black Hemi with a two-speed Lenco transmission. The car weighed 1,900 lbs. Leroy qualified fourteenth at the 1972 NHRA Supernationals with a 6.517/218.91. In the first round, he improved to 6.470/218.97, beating John Lombardo. He lost in the second round to Ed McCulloch's 6.37/225.56 with a respectable 6.59/189.87. Leroy ran this car on his own for Paul Candies & Leonard Hughes in 1972. He was the driver and crew chief. Leroy qualified at 6.707/206.89 at Tulsa PRA. | Leroy began to drive for C&H at the World Finals in 1971, where he was the #1 qualifier and runner-up to Phil Castronovo (almost the world champ)! But I only show him running at Pomona (6.82/209.79), Gainesville (6.72/221.67), and Ontario (6.47/218.97) in 1972. According to my records, Leonard Hughes drove at Columbus, Englishtown, Sanair, Indy, and Amarillo. Leroy drove for the entire tour in 1973, including Indy. We need to confirm the 228.42 speed, which did not occur on the NHRA trail. - BP | Bill, in 1972, Leroy mainly match-raced. We went to Tulsa for the PRA race, along with many others, instead of Indy, but we didn’t do the NHRA big events except the few you mentioned. We raced the AHRA races, and Leroy ended up being FC Champion in 1972 in C&H car. - Chris Carlton (Goldstein), 1/28/23 |

Notes: Halladay started the '84 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Later in the season, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 6.26/235 qualified on the "bump." He lost early in eliminations. Doc then ran his one NHRA event of the season, Brainerd. He qualified #15 at 6.047/243.24. Doc lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.90/241 in round one, despite improving to 6.037/246.57. |

Notes: Ran 5.023 at the Winston Invitational in Rockingham. The best standard National Event time was 5.068 at Englishtown. Hofmann was the second Funny Car driver to exceed 300 mph. He recorded a run of 301.10 mph 2/19/94 in Phoenix to become the 13th member - and only one of two Funny Car drivers - of the Slick 50 300-mph Club. - NHRA | Al started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.12/289.85 and worked his way to the final by beating Gary Clapshaw in round one, with a 5.35/277.17 and a 5.14/288.09 in round two beat Gary Bolger. In the semifinals, he ran 5.11/278.72 over Dean Skuza's 5.25/283. This put him in the final against Cruz Pedregon. The two had a close race as both ran 5.12 (Al at 285.08), but Cruz won. The next race was the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona. Hofmann became the second Funny Car driver to reach 300 mph when he ran 5.09/301.10 to qualify #2.
