Notes: Hoover had his new Monza at Martin, Michigan, in mid-August for the PHR Championships. Twenty-one cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field, and his 6.34 qualified #3. He improved to 6.31/222.77 in the opening round to beat Jake Crimmins, but an even better 6.26/229 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.24/219. He also qualified #9 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 6.176/228.42. His 6.206/223.32 in the first round lost to low qualifier Prudhomme's 6.056/234.37. Tom qualified #7 at Seattle at 6.286/227.27. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, 6.38/220.58 to 6.70/178.92. In round two, he did not start, sending Dave Uyehara on to a 19-second win. At the World Finals in Ontario, Tom qualified #15 at 6.44/221.13. He lost to Bob Pickett in round one, 6.248/234.37 to 6.429/228.42.

Notes: Tom started the '77 season by running 6.69/214.28 at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. He qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.73. A first-round 6.75/206.42 beat Cyril Leon and in round two, a 6.80 took care of Chris Lane. In the semifinals, both he and Tripp Shumake smoked the tires to identical 7.10's, but Hoover got there first. He lost to John Collins in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran well again, lasting until the second round before Raymond Beadle's holeshot in the "Blue Max" beat his 6.19 with a 6.27. On May 1 he was at the AHRA Springnationals. He beat Dave Benjamin in the first round, before losing to eventual winner Billy Graham in round two. He qualified #1 at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals in June with a 6.39/216.87. An off pace 7.13/106.90 lost to Gene Snow in the first round. Tom qualified #12 for the NHRA Springnationals, and although he failed to reach the finals, just qualifying was tough as Ed McCulloch, Jim Liberman, Tommy Ivo, Johnny White, and others failed to qualify. He won the Memorial weekend race at US 131 Martin, Mich., stopping Gary Burgin in the final. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Tom qualified #7 with a 6.27. He beat Frank Mancuso's Vega in the first round, and in round two, a 6.45/216 beat a tire-smoking Burgin. In the semifinals, Hoover had trouble and shut off giving Don Prudhomme an easy (6.31?) run into the final. Later in July he won the Division 5 race at Brainerd. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42 on July 31. He qualified #1 with a 6.31/225.00 and in the first round, a 6.45/221.67 beat Stan Bowman. In the semifinals, his 6.58/221.13 beat Graham's quicker 6.55/217. In the final, he took the victory with a 6.30 (Low ET) at 225.00 over Snow's 6.59/193. On August 4, he was back at Englishtown for the Funny Car Race of Champions. All cars ran two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Hoover shut off early in his first race and lost to Les Cassidy while his second race saw him run a 6.55/225 over Gordon Mineo's 6.54. His time wasn't good enough to make the final. He won the NHRA Grandnationals up in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 6.25/223.88 in the eight-car show. A first-round 6.35 beat Al Segrini and in the semifinals, he singled after Billy Meyer was unable to show after a first-round fire in which Meyer received second-degree burns to his hands. Tom ran a 7.17/122 single to get into the final, where he faced off against all-conquering Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" slipped to a 6.76/172 and that's all it took for Hoover to snag the victory with a 6.24/226.13. The following week (August 14), he was back at US 131 for the PHR Championships. He ran well, beating Denny Savage with a 6.37 in the first round, and he beat Bowman in round two. In the semifinals, a strong 6.20/221 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.23/234. His next win came at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 21. He qualified #2 with a 6.50/213 and in the final he beat Beadle's 6.53 with a 6.40/215. He had a disappointing showing at Indy for the US Nationals when he failed to qualify. Almost 40 cars showed for the sixteen spots so he was not alone on the outside looking in. He didn't go to Seattle for the Fallnationals, but he did go to Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified on the "bump spot" and lost early. Overall, it was a very successful season, probably the best to this point in his racing career. His best NHRA national event times were 6.193/229.59 at the Winternationals. Where did Tom run the 6.17?

Notes: Photo from Pomona, CA 1979. | Tom had a great year in '79, especially the early part of the season. He started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals over Gary Burgin, and then he went to Pomona for NHRA's Winternationals where he qualified #8 with a 6.26/229. He ran 6.24 and 6.18 in the first two rounds on the way to meeting Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. There he ran another 6.24 to beat Tripp. In the final he met low qualifier, Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle smoked his tires and Hoover ran a consistent 6.29/232.55 for the victory. It was his second career NHRA national event win. The following week (February 11), he was at Fremont for the East-West Meet. Hoover's first-round 6.86/139.10 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.37/208, but in the second round, he reset Fremont's ET record with a 6.06 at 230.76 to beat Ed McCulloch. He also backed it up with a 6.09. It was a strong showing for the "Showtime.” He made the finals at the next NHRA event as well, the Gatornationals in March. Tom qualified #3 with a 6.22. He beat Tom McEwen in round two with a 6.56/230 and a 6.50/226 beat a tire smoking Prudhomme in the semifinals. In the final he ran Gordie Bonin and despite Tom's quicker and faster 6.84/227.27 he lost to Bonin's 6.93/224. Also, in March he was runner-up to McEwen at the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight-car field and Tom ran 6.38/231.36 to qualify sixth. It was a hard show to make as Billy Meyer, Gene Snow, Shumake, and John Collins among others failed to qualify. A first-round 6.44/223.32 lost to Beadle's 6.37/229. Hoover then ran at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals where he qualified #1 with a track record 6.22 at 232.56. He was upset by Billy Graham in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals in Columbus, but he qualified well, running 6.15/235.60 for the #3 spot in the field. An opening round 6.33/231.95 advanced when Bob Pickett's Starfire broke, but in round two his 6.40/237.16 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.35/235. Tom was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals later in June. The Corvette was running strong going 6.19/242.60 (Top Speed) in his first-round win and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.21. In the final, he ran McEwen, but Hoover had problems and shut off. Hoover's 242.60 was a new AHRA speed record. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Early in July, he was at Houston for a best of three match race against McEwen. It wasn't Hoover day as he lost two straight running a best of 6.49. He was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Tom qualified #7 with a 6.20/238.09. A first-round 6.23 beat Al Hanna, but in round two he smoked the tires and lost to John Force. Also, in July he finished runner-up to Pete Williams in the "Chi Town Hustler" at the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove. At the US 131 Funny Car Nationals Tom lost in the first round, to Frank Oglesby. At the PHR Championships at US 131 he failed to qualify. He skipped over the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada choosing to race at the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City instead. Tom qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and lasted until the semifinals where he got crossed up and lost to Tom Hovland. He was upset in the first round, by Doc Halladay at the fourth NHRA Division 5 race at Brainerd. At the AHRA World Finals, he again qualified #1, this time with a 6.30/225. He beat Bill Spevacek in round one, before losing to Bonin in the semifinals. Indy was the next stop for the NHRA |US Nationals. Hoover qualified with a 6.07 and in the first round, his 6.12/241.93 beat Meyer's 6.32. A second round 6.24/234.37 lost to eventual winner Bonin's 6.04/244. Hoover's next stop was Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #7 with a 6.17/240.65. A consistent 6.18/240.00 beat Jim Moore in the first round, but his 6.26/239.36 in round two was no match for Beadle's 6.08/234.

Notes: Used Cordoba body after ruining Dart. Tom blew the Cordoba body off this car in early 1977 and finished the season in yet another Dart. Chronology for this Cordoba is July/August 1976 through March/April 1977. Due to the notch-back roof, the car had turbulence issues on the rear deck, and just weeks after its debut, Ivo was using coat hangers (!) to keep the rear spoilers from tearing off the car. This is a true story; I witnessed it firsthand. - David Hapgood | Ivo was at Sacramento on January 1 for a best of three match race against Dale Armstrong who was running Nitro for the first time. Ivo won all three races and the match with a best of 6.22/214.

Notes: On July 9, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. George didn't win or even make the final, but he did set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.21/226.10. George ran some nice 6.20s this year in NHRA competition, but his best run was in qualifying at Sanair with a 6.180/230.76. Best speed came on a 6.24/231.36 qualifying run at NHRA Englishtown.

Notes: Finished number 8 in NHRA championship points in 1976. Photo shows the Jake Johnston driven, Revell sponsored "Pisano & Matsubara" Chevy Monza in the staging lanes at Indianapolis Raceway Park during the 1976 NHRA US Nationals. Jake qualified #5 with a 6.148/228.42 pass and lost in the first round, of eliminations to Gordie Bonin when his 6.552/191.08 was no match for Gordie's 6.347/225.56. - Tom Nagy | Jake debuted the new Monza for Pisano and Matsubara in January at the Sixth annual Nitro Bowl at Fremont. The race was run differently with all 14 cars making three runs and the winner based on the number of wins in competition. Johnston set Low ET in his first-round win with a 6.45 over Roger Garten, who was driving the "Warhorse." In his second race, he got out of shape and shut off, losing to Ed McCulloch. The team hurt some parts on that run and was unable to run their third race. He then went to OCIR for the season opener. A 7.03 was all that was needed to advance in the first round, when Don Prudhomme failed to show and a 6.39/203.16 got around McCulloch in the next round. In the final, Jake faced off against John Lombardo, who debuted a new Mustang II here. He wasn't even supposed to be in the show, but when the "Hawaiian" blew during warmups, Lombardo filled in. Jake tried hard in the final, but there was no stopping John this day as he had earlier set Low ET at 6.30 and he almost duplicated it with a 6.31 in the final to take the win. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.228/204.54 qualified #4. A first-round 6.365/202.24 beat a blower-popping Dale Pulde, but in round two, Johnston slowed to an off-pace 6.822/169.81 that lost to Gene Snow's 6.623/212.76. In March, Jake competed at OCIR's Fox Hunt race. There were 27 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Johnston's 6.62 got the #8 spot. He failed to reach the final, but ran well. He was back at OCIR on May 8 for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #5, forcing him to run low qualifier Lombardo in the first round. John smoked the tires while Jake ran 6.37/218 to advance. In the semifinals, he outran Tom McEwen's 6.50/206 with a 6.42/223. He faced the "Blue Max" driven by Raymond Beadle in the final and Beadle took the win with a 6.28/227. The team qualified #9 at Ontario at 6.327/222.22. They lost a first-round decision to Don Prudhomme, 6.211/222.22 to 6.421/225.56. Formerly listed 229.00 best speed. We need confirmation of that.

Notes: On April 2, Johnston drove this car at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. His 6.59 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. That was pretty impressive as John Collins, Ron Colson, Denny Savage, among others, failed to qualify. But in the opening round of eliminations, his shut-off 6.92/177.51 lost to John Force's 6.46/212. | Drag News/ND March Meet coverage showed a 6.36. They were in the .30s early on. Notes: This was Keaton's project following his Comet. Raced at 1968 OCIR Manufacturers Championships. On February 24, Lions held a sixteen-car show that had over 50 cars attempt to qualify. Dee ran quite well, running an 8.17 to qualify #5. Unfortunately, in the first round, Jack Chrisman stepped up to an 8.09/180 to beat Keaton's 8.24/171.75. Not sure if this was with the Comet or the Cougar. He was in the Cougar on May 18 for a best of three match race against Ray Alley at Irwindale. Dee won all three races running times of 8.23/164.53,8.30/160.42 and 8.33/168.85. On June 1 withOCIR held its Funny Car 500. Keaton lost early. He made it to the final on June 22 at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale. A first-round 8.51/175.09 beat Gene Conway and in round two, he beat Chrisman. He got a solo into the finals after Frank Pisano and Randy Walls crashed their Corvairs together in the second round. But in the final against Gas Ronda, the Cougar lost a transmission. On July 6 he was at OCIR for the Nitro Championships where he again made it into the final. It was another sixteen-car show and Dee qualified #4 with an 8.06/182.18. A first-round 8.17/181.08 advanced over Tommy Grove who blew a torque converter. In the second round, an 8.13/181.08 took out the "Mako Shark" with Don Cullinan driving. A semifinal 7.95/173.74 beat Dale Williams. In the final, he faced Art Ward's Corvair. Art ran an 8.10/188 to win over Keaton's 8.48/151.51. OCIR held an Funny Car show on July 20 where all eight-cars ran two rounds and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. Keaton won his first race with an easy 9.15/172.64 over Bill Nash who lost fire in the "Raunchy" injected Corvette. In his second race, he lost to Charlie Allen's 8.04/188 with an 8.34/177.51 run. His times did not get him into the final, but a third round race was run against Dale Pulde in Charlie Wilson's "Vicious Too" Camaro. The Cougar won the race with an 8.30/186.36. Dee was in yet another final, this time at Irwindale on August 3 for the Gold Cup Championships. This was an eight-car show. A first-round 8.53/180.00 beat Don Williamson in the "Hairy Canary" and in the semifinal, he beat Eddie Pauling's 8.21/160 with a 7.93/171.10. In the final, an 8.24/178.21 gave him another runner-up finish to Ronda's 8.15/176. Irwindale held a Fuel Altered vs. Funny Car race on August 17 with three rounds of racing. Keaton lost his first race against Bill Thurman when the Cougar got airborne and he shut off to a 10.54. He won his next race with a holeshot 8.06/180.00 beating Leon Fitzgerald's quicker 8.00/188. He took another win in his third race with an 8.21/182.18 beating a crossed up Gary Read. On August 31, OCIR held an Funny Car meet. Twelve cars ran the first-round with the four lowest ET cars advancing to the semifinals. Dee won his first race with an 8.39/171.10 over Bob Shipman's 'Cuda. He then beat Ronda in the semi final, but broke and was unable to run the final. This reinstated Ronda who went on to win the event. On September 7, it was these two that met at OCIR for a best of three match race. Dee won the first race, but Ronda came back to win the second. The third race went to Ronda when the Cougar lost oil pressure and Keaton shut off. He finally grabbed that big win he had been looking for on September 21 at Lions. It was to be an eight-car show, but when 35 cars showed up, all ran a qualifying round with the lowest eight ETs advancing into the field regardless of winning or losing. Dee made the show with an 8.35. In the first round of actual competition, an 8.68/170.13 beat a crossed up Ronnie Runyan. In the semifinal, an 8.02/177.51 beat Chrisman's 8.09/176. In the final, he faced Bob Pickett and his 8.16/174.75 beat Pickett's 8.35/174 for the title. He was at Tucson on October 26 for an eight-car show, but he lost to Steve Bovan in the first round. On November 16 he was at Lions for an eight-car show where he failed to qualify. Keaton raced at Lions for an eight-car show on November 30. He lost to Pauling in the Whine Maker in the first round. On December 1, he showed up at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet with a Chrysler Hemi. He lost a transmission against Kelly Chadwick in the first round.

Notes: Lackey claimed a 6.27/244 time in a San Antonio express article! Confirmed 6.83 San Antonio. The car began as a BB/FC with a Chevy then was converted to an AA/FC. The car got the KB Hemi in 77.

Notes: Chris was driving the Camaro at the third NHRA Division 7 race at Sacramento in June. He beat low qualifier John Lombardo in the first round with a 6.64/207.86 when John crossed the centerline. He won his semifinal race and moved into the final against Jake Johnston, driving the "Pisano and Matsubara" car. A final round 6.79/222.78 lost to Johnston's 6.65/185. Also ran 6.40 at OCIR 77. | BP was at OCIR on the same day Mike took this photo! | The Phoenix Challenger was a new build by Steve Plueger (S&R) and the Camaro body went on the same chassis in 1977. The car is still alive and well in the merry old land of Oz as of 2024. - Dennis Doubleday

Notes: Leach started the '77 season at the Fremont Nitro Bowl race. He got crossed-up in his first race and shut off to 8.55/162 in a loss to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 7.36/208. In his second race, no times were given, but he crossed the stripe ahead of a badly out of shape, Bob Pickett. Ran 6.76/204.08 at PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. Ran 6.47 at Bakersfield on 3/77.
