Notes: John was at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. The track was slick, and he qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.77. He improved to 6.60/204.78 in the first round, to beat Jim Liberman's 6.82. Another 6.60 in the second round beat Rick Johnson while a semifinal 6.61 advanced when Raymond Beadle broke a rear end in the "Blue Max." In the final, he faced Tom Hoover, and Collins ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.58/221.12, to take the victory. John qualified #5 at the NHRA Winternationals at 6.293/231.36 and then won a round one matchup with John Lombardo, 6.250/228.42 to 6.80/138. He lost to Don Prudhomme in round two, 6.14/203 to John's 12-second shut-off pass. He didn't race another NHRA national event until Indy, where his 6.281/225.56 was the third alternate. That was John's last NHRA national event of the year. | Second quickest at SIR '77 64 FCs at 6.38, after John Lombardo's meet's quickest 6.24. They met in the final, where people (me included) climbed over the fence into the grass, and some blind drunk stepped into Lombardo's beams for an instant red light, giving Collins the win. - Joe Moore

Notes: John bought the car and ran it on his own with Pioneer. He was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 6.75. A first-round 6.79/193 beat Wayne Stoeckel, and in round two, a 6.90/216 beat Dave Hough. But in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, John qualified #14 at 6.400/225.56. He lost to Denny Savage's 6.39/214 in the first round, with a 6.55/217.91. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. His 6.46 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field, and a first-round 6.42 beat Les Cassidy's 7.33. Collins slowed to 6.60/182.18 in round two, but it was enough to beat Bryan Raines' 7.19/204. He slowed even more in the semifinals when he smoked the tires hard coming off the line, and his 7.75/134.00 lost to the eventual winner Tripp Shumake's 6.36/231. John was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show, but Billy Meyer had, but his car broke, so Collons took his place in the show. However, it didn't do a lot of good as in the opening round, his 6.37/196.70 lost to John Lombardo's 6.18/224. At the end of April, he competed in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.56/229.00 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.90/175.43 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.56/225. His next stop was at Tulsa on May 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. The track was poor, so his 6.82/211.76 actually qualified #3. But he fell off to 7.44/187.10 in a first-round loss to Billy Graham's 7.04/205. Early in June, Collins was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.74/215.83. He improved to 6.65/197.81 in the first round, to beat Dale Tuter, and in the semifinals, he took a big win when his 6.55 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.62 in the "Blue Max."He faced low qualifier Tom McEwen in the final, and this day proved to be Collins as his 6.46 easily took the victory over the "Goose's" 6.67. He was having so much fun on the AHRA tour that he was back at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio on June 18 for the AHRA Nationals. He didn't do as well there as he had at St. Louis. He qualified #5 with a 6.43/202, which set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Gene Snow. Unfortunately, the race was no contest as John got crossed up and shut down to 7.75/136, which Gene ran 6.44/195 to advance. John was the fifth alternate at NHRA Englishtown with a 6.42 (no speed reported). John qualified #5 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals in August with a 6.43/212.50. But in the opening round of eliminations, he got out of shape against low qualifier Billy Graham and shut off. He was the third alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.263/220.58. But he was the #2 qualifier at 6.134/220.58 at NHRA Ontario. He beat Kenny Bernstein in round one, with a consistent 6.138/221.67 to a shutoff. In round two, he broke on the burnout, sending Denny Savage on to the next round. John did not hit 230 mph in NHRA competition this year. Did he run 234.56 somewhere else?

Colson won his first-round race, but once again he hurts some parts and was unable to make his second round race against Don Prudhomme. The following week (June 18), Colson was at Martin, Michigan’s Funny Car Opener. He made it into the final where his 6.22 finished runner-up to Prudhomme's 6.13. The following day, he was at Byron for the Manufacturer's race. The "Snake" got him again, this time in round two where Ron's 6.42/222 fell to Prudhomme's 6.30/233. He was back at Martin, Michigan, in July for the third NHRA Division 3 race. He reached the final against Billy Meyer only to lose a 6.22/219 to 6.34/218.44 race. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.180 qualified #5. But in the first round, he lost in a tire-smoking battle against McCulloch. His 6.82 lost to the "Ace's" 6.75. Ron and Tommy Ivo were at Edgewater for a best of three match race in August. Each had won one race each and Colson had lowered the track record to 6.31, but the third race between the two was never run. The "Hawaiian" always seemed to run well at the PHR Championships at Martin. In '77, the team did alright. In the qualifying round, Ron’s 6.40 beat Burgin's 6.44 and in the next round, Ron’s 6.52 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.20. He also ran 6.22 at Indy 9/77. Best NHRA national event ET was the 6.180 at Englishtown and 233.16 at the Ontario World Finals.

Notes: Brian failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (times unavailable). He was the fourth alternate at Bandimere at 6.670/214.79. Those were his only two NHRA national events this year. His next stop was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Summernationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.88/209.79 qualified #6. Notes: Conway raced this car briefly while transitioning from the Destroyer jeep to a couple of very successful Corvette floppers. This was the former Mark Bullet "Bloomin Bullet" funny with a glass Firebird clip replacing the original Camaro tilt front. Conway replaced the Bullet's blown Chevy with his preferred early hemi, backed by a TorqueFlite. Chuck Finders built the square-tube chassis. - RT | Gene was at Lions on March 30, where he made three passes in competition. The Firebird got out of shape on the first run, and he shut down against Rusty Delling. Gene really picked up on his second pass, running 8.18/173.74 to beat Delling's 8.45/170. He won his last race with an 8.49/168.35. On April 28, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. An opening round 8.76 beat Delling's tire-smoking 9.01, but in the semifinals, he lost fire against Fred Goeske. He was still driving the Firebird on May 4 at the OCIR Funny Car Championships. Gene was part of the Pontiac team, but he failed to reach the finals. He was back at Lions on May 18, and he could not qualify for the eight-car field. They decided to run two full eight-car fields since so many FC's showed. Conway's 9.89 qualified on the "bump" for the second eight. A 7-cylinder 10.06/105 in the first round, lost to Larry Barker's 8.84/175. He then went to OCIR for a fuel altered vs. funny car race. The Firebird was still not running up to par. An ailing 11.15/76.98 lost to Gary Reed's 8.14/157 in the first round, but a 9.14/168.85 in round two beat Sush Matsubara. In round three, he improved to 8.43/172.08 to beat Randy Bradford.

Notes: The C&O Jeep used a fiberglass body from Fibercraft Co. It used a 392 Hemi that was overbored .030. It also ran a 1/2 stroker crank from Reath. M/T rods and pistons were used as well as a Schneider cam. Syverson ported and polished the heads and both the intake and exhaust valves from Donovan measured 2 1/8 inches. An M/T intake manifold held the 30% overdriven blower in place. A Hilborn injection unit topped it off. The engine was run on 70% nitro. The hp was claimed to be 1,000. A C&O built TorqueFlite was used. The tube frame had a 110" wheelbase and the car weighed in at 2,200 Lbs. Early runs produced an 8.23/177.62. Gene was at Riverside for the HRM Championships in early April, but his first-round 9.22/166.66 lost to Fred Goeske's 8.70/181 in the first round, of the 2400 lb. Funny Car class. On April 15, he competed at an eight-car show at Lions. He qualified #3 with a 9.14 and another 9.14 in the first round, beat Rusty Delling's "Fiberglass Trends" Corvair. He lost to the race's eventual winner Hayden Proffitt in the semifinals. Irwindale held an eight-car show on August 26 and Gene was there. A first-round 8.24/176.12 beat Don Williamson in the "Hairy Canary", but in the semifinals, he fouled away an 8.53/171.10 against Marv Eldridge's 9.53/169. Conway won over an eight-car field at Lions on September 30. He beat Eldridge's Corvette in the first round, with an 8.39/172.74 and in the semifinals, his 8.31/172.08 beat Steve Barrett's 8.45/171 in the "New Breed." The final found Conway running Frank Pisano's Camaro. Frank ran a personal best of 8.19/170, but lost to Conway's holeshot-aided 8.25/175.78. On December 17, he was at OCIR's final race of '67. He led the eight-car field in qualifying with an 8.07/177 and went on to win, beating Ray Alley in the final. Also ran 8.13 at Fremont in late 1967.

Notes: This appears to be a wholly different Firebird than was raced by Conway a year earlier. Stretched flip-top body vs the old two-piece stock-wheelbase lift-off, round-tube frame vs old rectangular-tube, etc. Any idea whether this was purpose-built by Conway or purchased from another racer? - RT
