Notes: J&E body. Chassis by Mike Hoag/Blairs. Have photos of this car running a 427 Chevrolet in 1969. | After installing a Hemi in this car late April, Steve showed up at OCIR on May 3 for the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open. He qualified #3 in the four-car GM team with a 7.81/189.46. In his first race, he beat the Parts Mart Camaro with a 7.77/191.84. And a 7.89/184.42 beat Ron Leslie's 8.28/182 in his second race. On May 31, at the Funny Car 500 at OCIR, he lost a driveshaft and the race against Rusty Delling in the first round, but he qualified well in the sixteen-car field with a 7.87/181.08 being good for #5 spot. Bovan ran an 8.09 to qualify ninth at the PDA Championships on July 19. He improved to a 7.90 in the first round, but still lost to Dave Beebe's 7.45. A sixteen-car race was run at Irwindale on July 26 and Steve's 7.98 just got in (#16) and he lost early. On October 11, Steve attempted to qualify at OCIR for the Funny Car Open. On a 7.71/196.65 pass, the car blew a motor and burst into flames. He was OK, but the car was out of the race. The 7.71 would have been good for the fifth qualifier. |

Notes: NHRA outlawed these topless Corvettes. That didn't keep them from running non-NHRA sanctioned events. Wright was at Lions on August 22 for an eight-car show. He failed to qualify but came out for a consolation race against Leroy Hales in the "Wild Breed." It wasn't much of a race between the two as Wright shut down to a 9.82 that lost to Hales' 7.43. The following week (August 29), he was at OCIR for another eight-car show. Once again, he failed to qualify, but he got in as an alternate. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Schumacher's 6.93/210 in the opening round. Johnny qualified for the eight-car field at Irwindale on September 12. In the opening round, his 8.15/183.66 fell to Frank Rupert's 7.97/153. Mike Gagnon information. |

Notes: Ed started the '68 season with a win at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline on January 21. A final round Low ET of the meet 8.43 beat a motor blowing Clare Sanders. The following week, on January 28, Schartman ran 8.27/177.28 to qualify eighth in the 32-car field at Lions for the AHRA Winter meet. A first-round 7.92 beat the Vicious Vette and a second round 8.11 beat a wheelstanding Ray Alley. He blew a transmission in the third round and lost to Gene Snow. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA had no Funny Car class, so he ran in Super Eliminator. Ed had a really good, close first-round race against Willie Borsch's AA/FA. The Comet's 7.95/182.18 barely beat Willie's 7.52/202. A second round 8.10/182.92 lost to Richard Galli's A/FD. In March, he finished runner-up to Don Nicholson at the Stardust National Open. Both he and Nicholson ran sevens in the final, but Don's Low ET of 7.83 beat his 7.99. He ran a match race against Larry Reyes in the Super Cuda on March 3 at Lakeland and in the first round, Reyes' 8.22 beat his 8.31. The second race had Reyes' win again with an 8.27 beating Eddie's 8.33. He won the last race with an 8.35, but lost the match race. In May, Pittsburgh held its Funny Car Championships and Ed made it into the semis before losing to Terry Hedrick. On May 10, at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships, Eddie won, running a final round 7.86/180 for the title. In June, he was still running the Comet when he ran a match race against Larry Reyes in the Super Cuda at Milan, Mich. Reyes won the first race with an 8.92/181 when Schartman lost a transmission and slowed to an 8.49/171. The second race saw Eddie win, turning a 7.81/181.50 over Larry's 7.99/179. In the final deciding race, Ed won with a 7.73 track record at 184.48 over the Super Cuda's 7.87/189. - Ron Howard | Super Stock & Drag Illustrated 9/68 cover car, 3-page feature. 120" Logghe chassis, 427 Cammer, C-6 auto trans. SS&DI feature reported Schartman, Behling were planning on replacing auto trans with direct drive and Schiefer 3-disc setup in search for 7.40s. Raced at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. - Ron Thums |

Unfortunately, he blew a transmission in his opening round race against Charlie Allen. On August 10, he was at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. An 8.19/174.75 in the opening round beat Gordon Mineo. He beat Gas Ronda's ailing Mustang in round two with an 8.23/170.13. Dave Beebe blew his transmission in the semifinal, and Williams advanced with an 8.34/159.01. He went up against the Jeep of Gene Conway in the final, and his 8.35/165.13 finished runner-up. |
