Notes: Blown early hemi, Enderle-injection, B&M Torqueflite. Pictures online show this car ended up on its top once. Cowdrey moved on to cars that turned corners, and continues to race big-bore exotic sports cars at "historic" events to this day. | Norm was at Irwindale for the New Year's Day race, but with 40 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, he was one of 24 that failed to make it. |

Notes: Schwartz was in Las Vegas on February 18 for the Stardust Open. It was an eight-car field, and his 9.87 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to Ray Alley. Gerry was one of 35 Funny Car drivers that showed up at Lions for an eight-car show on September 21. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. | Before Schwartz's purchase, the Cougar was the "house car" at Logghe's and sported a 427 Cammer. He added the Chevy mill. - RT |

Notes: After a great '76 season, Burgin was hoping for more success in '77. He debuted his new Monza at Fremont on January 1 for the Sixth Annual Nitro Bowl. He had handling problems in the first round, but he still won his race. Burgin was lined up against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" for their second-round race when it started to rain, and the race was canceled. Gary qualified #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But he was back in the Mustang II (thanks, Joe Moore). He beat Dale Pulde in the second round to face Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Burgin had trouble, and his new Monza caught fire on the line while eventual winner Prudhomme headed for the final with a 6.29/216 solo. The damage was lite, and Gary showed at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #5. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Gordie Bonin. In May, he won the Olympics of Drag Racing event, beating Prudhomme in the final with a 6.17/233.16. At Columbus, Ohio, for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified on the pole with a 6.10/236.84 (Low ET and Top Speed). Unfortunately, he lost to Bonin in the first round. He was runner-up to Tom Hoover at a Memorial Weekend Funny Car race at Martin, Mich. Gary qualified #3 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.17/234.98. He lost to Hoover in the second round when he smoked the tires and shut off. A week later (July 24), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. It was good to see him back on the IHRA tour as he hadn't run any IHRA events in '77 up until Milan. Gary must have been glad to be back as well as he won the race and set a new IHRA record of 6.08. He qualified #3 with a 6.28 in the eight-car field. In the first round, Burgin beat Jim Pryor in Jim Naramore's car, then stepped up to a 6.13 in the semifinals to beat Tom McEwen's quicker 6.11. In the final, he took the victory with his 6.08 beating Dale Pulde's right there 6.09. On August 4, he was back at Englishtown for its Funny Car Race of Champions event. All cars ran two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gary won his first race with a 6.43/218 that was Low ET of the first-round over Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." But in the second race, he fouled and shut off. Two other cars bettered his 6.43, and Burgin failed to reach the final. He was up North in Canada a few days later, on August 7, for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.31/230.76 qualified #3. He advanced past the first-round with a solo 6.30 when Tim Kushi's Vega failed to fire, but in the second round, he had a fuel pump break, and he lost to Prudhomme. Another win came a week later, on August 14, at Martin, Michigan's US 131 for the PHR Championships. All cars ran the first-round race with the eight lowest ETs regardless of winning or losing, advancing into round two. Gary's first-round 6.44 lost to Ron Colson's 6.40 in the "Hawaiian," but his ET qualified for the show. In the second round, he ran 6.18 to beat Prudhomme, and in the semifinals, a 6.23/234 beat recent Grandnationals winner Tom Hoover. In the final, he grabbed the victory when Pulde had problems and slowed to a 15.22 while Gary ran 6.61/231.36 to win. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, almost 40 cars fought for the sixteen spots available. Burgin qualified #2 behind Prudhomme with a 6.07/238.09. In the first round, he set Low ET of the meet with a 6.02 at 237, beating John Lombardo's 6.59. In round two, a 6.08/236 beat Tom McEwen's 6.24/233. But he was not going to repeat as the winner when in the semifinals, his parachute deployed on his run and his 'chute pulling 8.18/92 lost to Richard Rogers' 6.54/216 in Jim Green's "Green Elephant." That was a tough loss. Gary did not attend the NHRA Fallnationals, but he was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified on the pole with a 6.04/241.93 (Low ET and Top Speed), but he lost early. As the season was coming to a close, he won the Governor's Cup Funny Car race at Sacramento over Ed McCulloch, with his 6.20 winning over the "Ace's" 6.25. |

Notes: Match racer, fielded by Gasser great. Junior built the funny car after promoters stopped booking gassers around the country. Car AKA the Burgundy Bandit. Junior ran 7.52 at Tri-City. | Junior Thompson's new Satellite for '74 used a 110" Ken Cox chassis. It used a 392 Hemi with a huge 3/4 Moldex stroker crank and a .030 overbore to displace 474 cubic inches. The motor used Howards rods with Jahns pistons and an Isky cam. The '55 cylinder heads were worked over by Fudge. On top of the engine sat a Don Hampton-prepared GMC 6/71 that used a Cragar blower drive. Hilborn injection fed the alcohol. The transmission was a three-speed Lenco that transferred the power back to a Halibrand quick-change rear end with 4.30 gears. The car only weighed 1,700 Lbs. The engine put out about 1,200 hp. |

Notes: Frank was at Fremont for the NHRA Winston Challenge event late in the season. The race had an eight-car field of alcohol dragsters and an eight-car alcohol FC show. Only three TA/FCs qualified in the sixes, and Harris'6.79/199.11 qualified second behind Jack Holsey's 6.65/208. In the opening round, his 6.83/199.55 beat Mike Andreotti. In the semi-final, his 6.84/200.00 beat Tom Lemon's 7.28/161. He faced Don Moffitt in the final, and Harris was the favored car to win due to their times. But Moffitt put on a new set of tires in the final and stepped up to 6.85/200 to win over Harris' 6.88/199.11 runner-up effort. |
