Notes: Beal started the season strong. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.70/205.47 qualified #1. Ray Higley broke against him in round one, and he ran 8.82 to advance. A second-round 6.69/207.85 defeated Rick Henkelman's troubled 7.90/122. He set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.62/210.77 that beat Brad Anderson's off-pace 7.20/176. Chuck faced alternate Ed Grekul in the final. It was no contest as Beal's 6.64/211.26 scored the victory easily over Ed's 7.29/188. Chuck then went to Bakersfield, where he won as well. His final round 6.61 (Low ET) at 206 beat Anderson's 6.80/207 in the final. He had run 6.82/200.00 and 6.65/205.01 to reach the final. Shortly after that (March 20), he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Six opener. Beal set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.56/208.33. In the opening round, his 6.75/209.79 defeated Hans Kuesel's quicker 6.70/208. In the semi-final, he stopped Jack Holsey with a 6.59/211.76. Once again, he faced Anderson in the final. This time Brad's 6.69/211 picked up the money over Chuck's late6.60/212.76. In April, he was back at OCIR for its 64-car show. His 6.52/206.89 qualified second to Anderson's 6.49/216. These two would work their way into the final of the eight-car field of alcohol cars. Rick Henkelman crossed the centerline in the first round, and Beal ran 6.51/209.79 to advance. In the semi-final, he improved slightly, to 6.50/213.77 to beat Steve McCracken's 6.84/206. But in the final, Brad again took the victory from him. Chuck ran 6.520 at NHRA D7 Orange County CA 6/83 and 6.509/213.26 at the NHRA World Finals at OCIR on 10/15/83. |

Notes: Keith Martin lived in LA. He was from Norman, Oklahoma. His cars were "Shyster" because he was a full-time lawyer with only spare time on hand. He typically built one engine to go and one gutted engine for show. His driver had to use the one engine for the whole season because the other engine was not really a spare engine having had no pistons, cam, valves, etc. He built the transport trailer in his garage. The spare engine sat in the trailer to make it look like he had a spare engine for the competition. The others he was running against could sometimes afford two or three engines for the weekend while his engine had to last the whole season. During the offseason, he would build up a new motor that had to be used throughout the next season without any major repairs. He quit driving himself because he was 6 foot 6 and weighed in at over 300 pounds. He just built the cars and, when he could, would attend the races to tune up the engine and do minor repairs. His daughter, Kathy, would tag along. She still has a Smokey and the Bandit Firebird with shaker hood in her garage gathering dust. Considering the low budget and part-time effort, he did quite well against the full-time professionals. He built a few engines for other people including some in NASCAR. He quit racing when it just got too expensive to compete. - Albert Clark (cousin) | Bill saw this car compete at OCIR in 1977. |

Notes: 7.50 Sacramento. Bill had the 7.15/192 times recorded at the time. Put them on the back of an Instamatic snapshot taken at OCIR in 1977! | Their handout cards at 64 FCs were a B&W picture of the car burning out past the 'Dale's Grand Premier sign. It was what they could afford, and I appreciated it as such. - Joe Moore |
