Notes: Blown 400" early hemi, TorqueFlite combo in 110" owner-built tube frame. Stock wheelbase and lack of signage made for a very stock-appearing (and reportedly sanitary-appearing) race car. Rollout garnered feature treatment in mid-67 issues of Drag Strip and SS&DI magazines, but the car was not frequently seen at the head of the pack. Sanders went on to pilot the #2 Jungle Jim car in 1969. - RT | Jim St. Clair and Jack Green owned Boss Bite, Inc. Confirmed 8.36 at 175.78 at 1968 All-American Funny Car Championships at Bristol. The car was billed as the "Worlds Most Beautiful Funny Car." - Danny White | Sanders drove the car at the Irwindale's New Year's Day meet, where he qualified fifth with an 8.25 but failed to advance to the final of the sixteen-car field. On January 14, he qualified last with an 8.29/174.75 at an eight-car show at OCIR and ran 8.19/170.13 over Ronnie Runyan's 8.34/171 in the first round. He soloed in the semi's when Terry Hedrick was shut-off on the line with a fuel leak. In the final, his 7.71/187.91 Low ET and Top Speed run fell to Jim Liberman's 7.86/183. Another runner-up finish came on January 21 at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline when he blew his engine in the final against Eddie Schartman. At Lions on February 24 at a sixteen-car show, an 8.55 was only good for the third alternate. The following day on February 25, at Carlsbad's South Coast Funny Car Championships, Sanders first-round 8.31/173.07 beat Rich Hammons 8.58/165 in Samson. In the second round, he smoked the tires and ran a losing 8.68/174.40 against Dick Loehr's 8.14/169. Back at Irwindale on March 3, an 8.19/175.43 qualified Clare sixth in a sixteen-car field, but a first-round 7.97/186 pass from Lew Arrington trailed Limefire's 8.24/176.81. In June at Aquasco for the third annual Funny Car Invitational, Sanders ran a first-round 8.31/154 over Malcolm Durham, but the event was then rained out after just the first-round was run. In September, he started driving Liberman's second car.

Notes: "Fast Eddie" Schartman had the Logghe brothers build him a new Cougar for '69. It cost $20,000 to build. The car had a 118" wheelbase The body was built by Fiberglass Ltd. Powering the car was a 1,500 hp SOHC Ford that burned 70% nitro. Eddie built his own engines, and crew chief Alan Gillis helped to maintain them. The motor remained stock-sized at 427 cubic inches and used M/T rods and Ansen 6:1 pistons. Crane supplied the cams. Ed ran steel heads. The 25% overdriven blower was built by Don Hampton. A four-port Hilborn injector sat on top. The power was transmitted to the 4.11 Ford rear end by a C-6 automatic transmission. The total weight was just under 2,000 lbs. | Schartman started the year on a good note by beating Arnie Beswick in a match race in Jan at Thunderbolt Raceway in Florida. It was cold, so the track wasn't at its best, as shown by the times. Beswick's 8.80/166 won the first race when Ed got crossed up and shut down. In the second race, Ed ran an 8.70/168.00 over Beswick, who lost a rear end. Ed ran a final 8.00/170.77 to win when Beswick, who had repaired the rear end, came out only to blow his transmission and lose the match. Schartman qualified #14 with an 8.32/174.75 at the NHRA Winternationals, but a holeshot 8.45 by Rich Siroonian beat his quicker 8.39 in the first round. He met Clare Sanders for a match race at Suffolk on April 6, and Clare ran a first-round 7.93/187 over his 8.16/173.07. It was more of the same in the second round, with Clare's 7.85/185 beating Ed's out-of-shape 8.30/178.67. He did win the third race with an 8.03/177.86, beating Sanders' 8.45/152, but he lost the match. At another match in April, he faced Bruce Larson at US 131, Martin, Mich. Larson won the first race with an 8.29/187 over Ed's 8.42/172.41. Schartman then tied things up with an 8.37/173.41 over Bruce, who had transmission problems. In the do-or-die final race, Larson took the victory and the match. Eddie did much better on April 27 at Cordova's 1,000-foot track, where he beat Arnie Beswick three straight with a best of 6.34/175.45 on the short track. He lost a tough one against Don Schumacher on May 10 at York US 30, where Don smoked him in two straight with runs of 7.69/196 and 7.90/194 that beat the Cougar’s 8.01/181.80 and 7.89/185.18. Then came a rematch against Sanders the following day (May 11) at Connecticut, where Sanders' 8.19/180 won the first race when Schartman lost a motor. Clare won the match when Ed couldn't return to make a run. On May 16, he went to Union Grove to run a UDRA race. He lost to eventual winner Sanders in the second round. A four-car round-robin race was held at LaPlace on May 18. Ed won all three of his races to win the event. An 8.05/176.12 in the first race beat Dee Keaton driving Fred Goeske's "Hemi-Cuda" at 8.65/145. In the second race, Schartman was up against Charlie Durel's AA/GD, driven by Steve Puneky. The dragster filled in for Mart Higginbotham, who was late arriving. The Cougar's 7.86/181.80 beat the dragster's 7.98/181.00. In the last race, he faced Leonard Hughes. Hughes hit some water on the track and shut off while Ed hustled to a 7.87/182.54 to win. Schartman was at Budds Creek on May 30 for its Memorial Day Funny Car Championships. The big SOHC motor was down on power here as his 8.11/178.00 in the first round, lost to Larson's 7.95/187. He ran a couple of consolation races, beating the "Frantic Ford" with an 8.09/176.81 and losing to Liberman's 8.07/184 with an 8.11/180.72. He won over a small funny car field at York US 30 on May 31 for an NHRA Division 1 points race. In the final, he beat Lee Jones in Malcolm Durham's Camaro with a 7.83/183 over Lee's 7.92/182. Ed qualified #12 with an 8.14/178.57 at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, but in the first round, the car came up ailing and lost to Ray Alley's 7.98/180. Then came another rematch, this time against Larson at Maple Grove. Bruce won three straight, resetting the track speed record to 187.88 and hitting a 7.69 best over Ed's best of 7.89/178.57. A rematch was run against the two on June 21 at York US 30, where Ed ran a 7.86/182.92 holeshot over Larson's quicker 7.62 in the first race. Larson broke in the second race, and Schartman ran the backup car of Al Graeber and won with a 7.75/184.00 to Al's 7.87/184. Larson fixed his car and was hoping to win at least one of his three races, but he got out-of-shape and lost to Ed's 7.95/180.72 to give Ed three straight victories. He ran at Edgewater on July 3 but lost to Jim Liberman in the first round. At the Cars Magazine meet on July 20, he beat the Green Hornet in the first round, but in the second round, he met Sanders, who seemed to have a hex on him. Sure enough, Sanders' 7.56/192 beat Ed's 8.00/178.92. He ran much better at Sunset Dragstrip's fifth annual Funny Car Championships. The track was one-eighth mile. Ed advanced with a 5.19 in the first round, when Paula Murphy fouled. He got past the second round and met Mel Perry in the semifinal. Perry ran a 5.20 but lost to a 5.13 by Schartman. In the final, he met Larson, and Larson prevailed. At Atco on July 23 for their fourth annual Funny Car Championships, Ed set a 7.48 track record in the first round, at 187.88 over Lew Arrington's 7.81. In the semifinal, a 7.67/182.54 beat (finally) Sanders' 7.84/186. In the final, he met Fred Goeske and won, resetting his own track record with a 7.46. After such a good run, it was hard to take the first-round loss at the PHR Championships on August 2. Dean LaPole's 7.97 beat Ed's 8.10 in the first race of round one. The following day (August 3), he ran a match race at Shelby Raceway against Bobby Wood, and Wood beat Schartman three straight with a 7.54/194 best to Ed's 7.97/181 best. At the three-day Super Stock Nationals, he ran well the second day (August 9), but the last two rounds of Saturday's race were run on Sunday morning when the rains came. Al Graeber fouled against him in the semifinal. In the final, Danny Ongais beat him with a 7.75/193. He lost in the second round to Larry Reyes at the AHRA Nationals at New York on August 17. Ed managed to qualify for the US Nationals with a 7.53/191.89 for #14 on the grid. Unfortunately, he fouled against Larson in the first round. After Indy, Ed let Arnie Behling drive. I can't find another match race or race where Schartman drove the fueler. - Ron Howard

Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight-cars. But at one time he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of AA/Funny Cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Stamping Co. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides built cars, including a front-hinge flip top funny car. The Barracuda ran a best of 7.22/205 in 1969 as No. 1 qualifier, Low ET at NHRA Nationals, Indy. - Danny White | Don started the year by qualifying #1 with a 7.50 at the Irwindale New Year's Day Race. A first-round 7.59/195.64 beat Lew Arrington's 8.06/195. In the second round, a 7.52/198.66 took care of Jim Liberman's ailing Nova and in the semifinal he set a 7.44 track record at 198.66 over a fouling Dick Bourgeois. In the final, a blown trans stopped his march to victory. He again qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.67/194.38. He was upset by a new car in the first round, Danny Ongais. At Pomona on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, Don could only muster an 8.02/195.65 (Top Speed) in qualifying second. A first-round 8.24 beat a crossed-up Dave Beebe in the Super Chief, but an 8.10 by Rich Siroonian in round two stopped his 8.12/191.08. On February 9 at OCIR for the second All-Pro race, he qualified fourth with a 7.63/192.30 and he made it into the final, meeting Siroonian who dropped a 7.39/195 bombshell on him. The following week on February 16 for the Stardust Open at Las Vegas he made it into the semifinal before Ongais' 7.88/193 put him on the trailer. He set Top Speed at 7.72/199.11 in qualifying fourth at Riverside for the HRM Championships, but he lost fire in the first round. On March 29 he competed in the final OCIR All-Pro race and had an easy first-round when Dave Beebe broke. In the semis against Ongais, both cars ran 7.71, but Don was disqualified for crossing the centerline. Jim Liberman faced Schumacher at a match race at Connecticut on April 6 and Jim beat Don three straight. A rematch was set for April 19 at Blaney. Liberman won the first race and Don's 8.00/191 won the second over JJ's 8.07/182. So both were loaded for bear for the final race. Jim's 8.00/182 won over Schumacher's track records of 7.94/190. At Aquasco's fourth annual Funny Car Invitational on May 4, Don ran a first-round 7.95/189.86 over George Reese, but Liberman's Low ET 7.81/189 shot in the semifinal beat his 7.98/191.88. Another match race was run on May 10 at York US 30 against Eddie Schartman. Don beat Schartman two straight before racing the backup car of Al Graeber and setting track records of 7.42/196.92. On May 27, Aquasco held an eight-car show and Don won his first-round race with a 7.84/194.38 and in the semifinal his 8.02/189.06 beat Ron Rivero who lost a transmission. Unfortunately, Schumacher also lost a trans so he was unable to make the final. He went to US 131, Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race on May 29, but he got out-of-shape in the first round, and lost to Gary Dyer's 7.55/193. Minnesota held a six car show on June 1, and Don broke against Hedrick (7.75/188) in his first race. In his second race, he beat Clare Sanders' 8.31/175 with a 7.58/194.80 (Top Speed). In his third race, he got out-of-shape and lost to Dick Loehr's 7.59/193. He got a big win at Aquasco on June 22 for the President's Gold Cup Championships. He beat Malcolm Durham's 8.05/186 in the first round, with a 7.77/194.38. Don singled in the semifinal with a 7.98/196.50 (Top Speed). In the final he set Low ET at 7.68/195.22 in beating Liberman's 7.75/194. On July 19, Don raced at the Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships. He beat the ailing Colt 45 in the first round, with a 9.80/126.93, but lost to John Dekker's 8.74/173 in the semifinal with a 9.00/155.70. At the Cars Magazine meet, he ran a first-round 7.54 at a track speed record of 201.34 over Frank Federici, but he lost fire on the line against Frank Oglesby in the second round. He had a rare (for him) first-round loss at the PHR Championships on August 2 when Randy Walls' 7.69/180 beat Don's 7.86/191.08. At the next event, the AHRA Nationals at York on August 17, he more than made up for the first-round loss by winning the race with a final 7.39/198.22 over a fouling Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian. He set Top Speed at 200.88 and had beaten Terry Hedrick in the second round and ran a 7.30 in the semifinals while beating Dick Harrell's 7.39. At the US Nationals on September 1, Don qualified second with a 7.27 at only 189.47, and a first-round 7.22/204 over Jess Tyree's 7.46/199 was good for Low ET of the meet. But against Bruce Larson in the second round, he lost a transmission putting him out of the show. A big match race against Rich Siroonian was run at Irwindale on October 4 and Don won the first race with a 7.72/195.64 over Rich's 7.80/191. But Siroonian came back to win the next two races with runs of 7.63/201 and 7.43/204 over Schumacher's 7.65/197.26 and 7.69/200.44. On October 11, OCIR held its Funny Car Invitational event with eight-cars going for the win. Don advanced past the first-round when Ed Lenarth fouled and in the semifinal, a 7.52- 201.79 lost to Pat Minick's 7.40/200. He didn't do very well on October 18 at the Irwindale East/West meet when he lost to Ron Leslie's 7.84/185 in the first round, knocking him into the consolation round where be again lost in the first round. This time a 7.40/200 by Gas Ronda beat his 7.83/183.83. He ran much better the following day (October 19) at the Fremont Fallnationals, where a first-round 7.50/185.56 sent Terry Hedrick's 7.75/175 to the trailer. A semifinal 7.58/196.92 advanced when Siroonian lost a trans. In the final, a 7.53/198.22 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.71/186.32 in Mickey Thompson's white Mustang. That was followed by another win on October 25 over a sixteen-car field at Lions for the East/West Championships. A first-round 7.49/188.67 beat Randy Walls' 7.59/188, and a round two 7.52/182.92 advanced when Lenarth broke. In the final he met Siroonian and a 7.32/193.96 beat Rich's ailing 9.54/79. He competed at Sears Point on November 2, but failed to get to the finals. A 7.55 on November 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet qualified him first on the Chrysler team. But the following week (November 16) he won only one of his three races. A 7.57/197.80 beat Danny Ongais' 7.62/191. In his second race Terry Hedrick's 7.46/188 beat Don's 7.50/195.65. In his final race he exploded a trans against Mike Van Sant in the Invader. He ran well on November 9 at Carlsbad for the PDA Race of Champions. He ran a 7.60/188.10 over Liberman's 7.60/191 and a semifinal 7.56/187.50 beat Snow who had driveline problems. In the final, Larry Reyes 7.46/195 was too much for Schumacher's 7.84/166.66. - Ron Howard

Notes: Al started the year with a non-qualifying effort at the NHRA Winternationals (times not reported). Things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #7 with a 6.039/231.95. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 6.306/226.70 in the first round, and lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.06/238. Atlanta had only eight-car fields in the PRO categories for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Segrini got in on the "bump" with a 6.165. He lost to Shirl Greer driving Larry Coogle's "Sting" in the first round, when Al shut off to a 10-second run. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where only eight cars showed for the eight-car field. Al qualified #3 with a 6.09, and a 6.15 in round one, beat Dick Rosberg. He fell off to a 6.42 in the semifinals and lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.22 in the "Blue Max." He qualified #3 again at the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.07. He beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, with a 6.27, but in the semifinals, the car locked up in reverse, and he could not run Beadle. More highlights of '81 included a three straight match race victory over Bruce Larson at New England. Al ran times of 6.25/224.43, 6.10/231.95, and 6.15/231.95 to beat Bruce, who had a best of 6.24/223. Ten cars ran the first-round at Englishtown's Night of Thrills, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Segrini made that final by running 6.27/229.01 to beat Gary Burgin. In the final, he faced Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler" car. Al tried hard, but his 6.39/228.42 finished runner-up to Hawley's 6.18/230. Another runner-up finish to Hawley came at the Funny Cars under the Stars event in New England. This time Al's 6.21/222 finished second best to the "Chi-Town's" 6.08/224. Segrini was not pleased with the NHRA Springnationals, where he could only run a best of 6.382/224.99. That was good for the fourth alternate. He did not attend the NHRA Mile-High Nationals in Denver, but he was back on the NHRA tour for the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #13 with a 6.200/233.16. But Hawley seemed to have his number as he stopped Segrini in the first round, 6.17/229 to a 15-second shutoff. Atlanta held a four-car show in July, and Al was the winner. He beat Greer in his first race with a 6.31/228, and in the final, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.15/230.76 that beat Dale Pulde. On July 26, he was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Eastern Regional. A 6.28/225.57 qualified #3, and a 6.16/226.70 in the first round, beat a tire-smoking Greer. He lost a close one to Tom Anderson in the semifinals, where Al's 6.20/226.70 lost to Anderson's 6.19/229. Lebanon Valley held an Funny Car show, and Segrini was there. He was having a bit of a rough time. He fouled against Rick Johnson in his first race, and in his second, he had difficulties and slowed to 11.72/86.12 that lost to Pulde. He finally got a good run in on his third race, where a 6.27/223.32 beat Dominic Santucci. On August 2, Al was back at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. His 6.22/236 qualified #4 for the eight-car show, but he lost in a tire-smoking battle to Al Baldwin in the first round, of eliminations. The NHRA Grandnationals was also just an eight-car field, and this time Al didn't make it. His 6.350/228.42 was the second alternate for the show. Englishtown hosted its Race of Champions race soon after that. The race featured eight cars, each making two passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Al's ET's did not get him into the final, but he ran well. First, he beat Beadle's 6.62/163 with a 6.37/225.56 and then defeated a motor-blowing Al Hofmann with a 6.38/230.77. He was back at Englishtown a while later for the US All-Pro Championships. He ran really well there, running times of 6.19, 6.13, and 6.20 with a best speed of 234. He won the race over Gary Burgin, who lost a blower belt in the final. Al ran his best numbers of the year at NHRA Indy with a 6.032/240.00 qualifying #11. He beat broken Craig Epperly in round one, with a 6.110/234.37. in round two, he lost a close one to John Pott, 6.22/232 to 6.259/230.76. Al qualified #13 at Fremont with a 6.112/230.17. He beat Rob Williams on a holeshot in round one, 6.09/234.98 to 6.08/234.98, but Gary Burgin got to him in round two, 6.15/232 to 2.24/233.76. Al was the first alternate at the OCIR World Finals at 6.205/228.42, but he got in. Unfortunately, he shut off against Dale Armstrong in round one, whose 5.93/230 would have been tough to beat.

Notes: Segrini started the season the right way by winning the NHRA Winternationals. Crew chief Bill Schultz tuned the car to a 6.04/244.56 to qualify #8. A 6.24/230.76 beat Tom Ridings' 6.26/233 in the first round, while in round two, his 6.30/233.16 beat Gary Burgin's quicker 6.29/227. In the semifinals, he beat Doc Halladay's off-pace 7.92 with a 6.21/239.36. This put him in the final against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle was favored due to his times, as he had run 5.97, 6.02, and another 5.97 en route to the final. But in the final, the "Max" slowed to a 6.32/226 that lost to Segrini's 6.26/238.09. Al got to Beadle again at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, in March. Al qualified #9 with a 6.11/243.24 that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Beadle. In their first-round race, Raymond got out of shape and hit the guardrail. The impact flipped the car onto its roof. He was OK, but while all eyes were on the "Blue Max," Al was motoring to the first-round win with a 6.18/223.32. Unfortunately, he lost to Paul Smith in round two. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the Bakersfield March Meet with his 6.40/224.43 falling short of the 6.35 "bump." At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the first round. He competed at Atlanta's Spring Funny Car race in April but failed to reach the finals. Al was back at Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he was the third alternate with a best of 6.18/231.95 for the eight-car show. He was at Rockingham on May 2 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 with a 5.97 behind Beadle's track record 5.86. Al beat Burgin in the first round, before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Segrini qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.19/237.46. But in round one, the car broke, advancing eventual winner Beadle. He ran really well at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.10/243.90 qualified #11. In the first round, he faced Beadle, who qualified with a 5.98. But the "Blue Max" smoked all eight pistons while Segrini advanced with a 6.16/238.09. He beat Dale Pulde in round two, and a 6.27/236.84 got around Bernstein's 6.32/223 in the semifinals. This set up a final-round meeting with Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” The final wasn't even close, as Segrini slowed to 6.42/217.39 while Hawley got the victory with a 6.07/233. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 5.95 qualified #3. Al lost to Pulde in the first round. He also lost in the first round, at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.18/225.00. There Tim Grose beat him. Segrini made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.03/235.60. Al's best NHRA times were 5.910 at Brainerd and 245.23 (5.915) at Indy. He scored two runner-ups in addition to the Pomona win. Al jumped into the Joe Pisano car at the 1982 OCIR Manufacturers Meet.

Notes: Ran 6.17 at Union Grove, 6.12 at Indy, 6.14 at Seattle. | If there was ever a time not to debut a new car it would have to be at Indy for the US Nationals. But that's what Tripp Shumake did in 1977. There were almost 40 FC's trying to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Crew chief Dan Geare showed that he knew his stuff by tuning Tripp to 6.17 and 6.12 times (at 231.36) in qualifying. Either time would have made the show, but the 6.12 put him in the #5 spot. In the first round Shumake's 6.39/216 beat alternate Gene Snow who got into the field after Dale Emery crashed in qualifying. In the second round, Tripp shut off to 9.59/95 with problems, losing to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.10/228. At Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, Tripp set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.14. Only fifteen cars showed so Tripp got the "odd-lot" solo in the opening round. A second round 6.28/223.88 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.40/230, but a semifinal 6.29/223.32 lost a close one to Jim Dunn's 6.28/229. Irwindale held its last race on October 1 and the "Powers Steel" car was there. It was a sixteen-car show and in round one, Tripp's 6.40/205 beat Tom Prock, who had problems and shut off. In the second round, he improved to 6.27 at only 202 to beat Ron Colson's 6.47/221 in the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, the car broke on the line in the semifinals, giving opponent Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" a solo into the final. A week later (October. 9), the team was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. Shumake's 6.27/231 qualified #14. A quick-leaving 6.42 beat Henry Harrison's quicker 6.37 in round one, but once again the car broke (transmission) and he lost to Prudhomme in round two.

Notes: Tripp was at OCIR for a sixteen-car show in March. While he didn't win or even reach the final, he did run 6.41 twice. Dennis is from Alaska, but the car is housed in Phoenix. Later this year, Tripp took over driving the Powers Steel Camaro.

Notes: Snow was at Green Valley Raceway on February 18 for a best of three match race against Don Gay's Pontiac. Gene's Dart broke in the first race, and Gay's GTO broke in the second. Gene won the final race with an 8.87 to win the match. Gene was in the Dart on June 22 for a match race at Austin, Texas against Gay. Don had a rod let go in their first race, and he was out of competition. At the same time, Ron Leslie also had a match race there against Mike Burkhart. Mike lost his trans in the first race, so Snow and Leslie became a match. In the first race, Leslie won with an 8.12/181 when Gene fouled away an 8.23/174.75. In the second race, an 8.04/178.21 lost to the quicker-leaving Leslie at 8.07/177. The following day (June 23), Snow was at Amarillo for a best of three against Kelly Chadwick. The Camaro's transmission failed in the first two races, and Snow won easily. The roles reversed in the last race as Gene's transmission blew. He then went to Oklahoma City for its Funny Car Championships on July 4. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 8.16/184.07 beat Paul Stefansky's 8.30/175. He lost to Mike Burkhart in the semifinal. | Scary first blown fuel car. Was the 7.65 at San Antonio in the Dart or Charger? - Danny White
