Notes: Ran 6.03 at Pomona, 6.32 at Gainesville, 6.15 at Columbus, 6.09 at Englishtown, 6.06 at Indy, and 6.33 at Seattle. | Prudhomme got his new Arrow out of Jaime Sarte's shop just five days before the NHRA Winternationals. He did pretty well with it at Pomona. Don qualified #1 with a 6.14/240.64. He beat Jim Liberman in the first round with a 6.07/225.00. A second-round 6.14 at just 203.61 beat John Collins in Tom McEwen's second car. He got a single in the semifinals when Gary Burgin's car caught fire; Don ran 6.29/216.34. In the final, he ran Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Prudhomme wrapped up the weekend by winning the race with a Low ET and Top Speed run of 6.034/247.25. Despite a great year, these was Don's best NHRA numbers for 1977. The speed was a track record. In March, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Again, he qualified #1, this time with a 6.19/231.36. A first-round 6.38 beat Leon Cain, but in round two, he smoked the tires and lost to Eddie Pauling's 6.09 in Johnny Loper's Monza. The following week (March 13), Prudhomme qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.32. He easily got past the first round and then ran 6.34/228 to beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett in Mickey Thompson's Starfire in round two. In the semifinals, Don faced Roger Lindamood's "Color Me Gone" Monza. Don had him covered performance-wise, as Lindamood qualified #10 and had run 6.51 the round before, but for some reason, Don fouled, giving Roger a free ride into the final. On March 27, the "Snake" beat the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen in the final at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 race. Irwindale held a big Funny Car show on April 9, and Don was there. He lost before the final and again to Pauling, who was debuting a new Arrow for Johnny Loper. The story here was the times: Pauling won with a 5.97 over Don's 6.31. He made it into the final at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event but lost to Gary Burgin. In mid-June, the "Snake" was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.15. He beat Beadle, Gordie Bonin, and Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" to get into the final, where he faced Pickett. Bob outran Prudhomme's 6.26/236.84 with a 6.22/231, and Don had to settle for the runner-up spot. He got it all together at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with 6.09/238.09 times. He took out Tom Prock in the first round, and a 6.26/227 stopped Ed McCulloch in round two. In the semifinals, a 6.31/220 advanced over a shutting-off Tom Hoover, and in the finals, he was to run Billy Meyer. Meyer broke, and Prudhomme won with a 6.42/186.33 pass. Shortly after that (July 23), he stopped off at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.17/231.95 and won the race, beating Norm Wilcox driving Jim Green's "Green Elephant" Vega in the final with a 6.22/222.77. He made a stop at Atco for their Fuel Funny Car Championships. It was a race with all cars making two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Don's first race saw him turn a 6.26/228 (Top Speed) to beat Al Hanna's 6.72 in the "Eastern Raider," while in his second race, he beat R.C. Sherman in the "Black Magic" Vega with a Low ET of the meet 6.22. The other car that made the final was Bruce Larson, whose 6.51 was the second-best time. Based on times, you know the "Snake" was the favorite, but Larson got the jump and won, holding off Prudhomme for the title. Another runner-up effort came at the NHRA Grandnationals on August 7. It featured an eight-car field, and Don set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.17/236.22. The 6.17 tied his own track record. A 6.21/234 in the first round beat Bonin's 6.29/227, and in the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.17 solo pass when Burgin had a fuel pump break. In the final, he ran Hoover and his "Showtime" Monza. Tom won his first NHRA National event with a 6.24/226 over Prudhomme's troubled 6.76/172.08. A week later, he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships. Don singled in the first round, with a 6.11, but in the second round, his 6.22 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.18. He returned to the winner's circle at the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. He was the quickest in qualifying with a 6.06/241.93. In eliminations, he ran 6.14/234.37 in the first round to beat Meyer's 6.28/218. In round two, he ran his best of eliminations, a 6.10/228 to beat Tripp Shumake in John Powers' Camaro. Prock fouled against him in the semifinals, and Don ran 6.13/225 to move into the finals. The car facing him in the final was a bit of a surprise. It was Richard Rogers driving the "Green Elephant." Richard's best time had been a 6.21 in qualifying, so he was at a bit of a disadvantage. Sure enough, Don won the race with a final round 6.24/236.22 to beat Richard's 6.58/205. Another win came soon after when he won the Irwindale Back to School Race by beating Dave Hough's 6.09 in the final with a 6.05/230. He was in Seattle on September 25 for the NHRA Fallnationals, but rain postponed the event, and he did not return for the "rain date." Don had only qualified #7 with a 6.33, very unusual for him. He ran more "normal" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.05. He then made like a bracket racer, running three straight 6.06s to enter the final against Bonin. He faltered in the final, slowing to a 6.36 that lost to Gordie's 6.31. | Did Don run 5.95 somewhere this year? We originally listed 5.955, but the Pomona 6.034 is his quickest confirmed ET. Let us know if you have alternate info.

Notes: AMAZING 5.63/244.56 shut-off run at Indy this year, plus 5.73/252.80 NHRA best speed. First Funny Car to run 250.00 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on 5/29/1982 (initial entry into the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Cars). Also, 247.25 at 82 Southerns. Credited with 255 mph run at AHRA Gary, which was probably more like 245. | Don made one of the most incredible runs in Funny Car history at Indy. This came in a year when he switched from Mopar bodied cars to a GM for the first time since '76. He had won twice in '81 and switched to a Firebird for the '82 season. He started the season at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. A track record 6.34 qualified #1, and he made his way to the final by running 6.43 over Johnny West and 6.34 to beat Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. Prudhomme was upset in the final by Ed Moore, who had earlier reset both ends of the track record with 6.21/232.54 times. He ran 6.03/242.58 for the #4 spot at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. An off pace 6.31/185.95 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.11/243 in the first round. Things were even worse at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's best of 6.19/231.60 failed to qualify. The NHRA Southern Nationals was held in Atlanta in April, and it featured an eight-car Funny Car field. It was a tough show to qualify in, but Don's 6.13/244.56 got in on the "bump" spot. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Frank Hawley's 6.09/220 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The following week (May 2), he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. Don won the race there, beating Tom Hoover and John Force to reach the finals. In the final, he beat upstart Tom Hovland's 6.46/222 with a 6.31/238.72. On May 29, Don ran 6.00/250.00 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. The first 250 mph run by a Funny Car made him the fifteenth NHRA driver to top 250 and the first to do it in a Funny Car. The time qualified him first in the eight-car show. The race was run on May 30, and Don ran well but ended up as the runner-up. He beat John Pott in Larry Coogle's car in the first round, with a 6.10/242. In the semifinals, another 6.10 at 246 beat a tire-smoking Billy Meyer. But in the final, he came up against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." The two left together, but Beadle's 6.08/239 beat the "Snake's" 6.13/247.25 for the win. Early in June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Don set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.13, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.34 that lost to Hovland's 6.33. He qualified #1 again the following week at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.92 (Low ET) at a track record speed of 248.61 got him the pole. He fell off to a 6.20/241.93 in the first round, but it was still enough to beat Tim Grose's 6.31/216. He lost to Kenny Bernstein in round two. It was around this time that a few cars started running nitrous. Meyer was one of them, and he had run over 254 at Norwalk. Bob Brandt took a look in that direction. AHRA held its Summernationals at Kansas City, and once again, Don got the pole with a track record 5.97 at 244.56. A 6.03/229.00 beat Jim White in round one, while a semifinal 6.10/196.50 advanced to the final when Ron Correnti failed to fire. In the final, he met old foe, Burgin. Don had problems and shut down to 7.10/130.81 while Gary motored to the victory at 5.99/234. The next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The "Snake" qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.03/245.90 (Top Speed). This is where he got his first NHRA victory in the Firebird. Prudhomme advanced past round one when Beadle broke a rear-end while a semifinal 5.91 (Low ET) at 244.56 beat Hawley who smoked the tires. The final turned out to be a rematch right down to the winner as the '81 event. It was Bernstein against Prudhomme, and Don prevailed with a 6.03/245.23 over Kenny's 6.13/233. And just as he had done in '81, he went out and won the NHRA Summernationals as well. Meyer was the performance leader, but Don wasn't running too badly, qualifying #6 with a 5.96/248.61. He beat Murf McKinney, Beadle, and Bernstein to reach the finals, where he faced Mike Dunn. The "Snake" was not to be denied his 34th NHRA career victory, running 6.00/241.28 over Mike's 6.15/237 in the "Hawaiian." On June 27, he was at Brainerd for the US Funny Car Championships. He was upset in the first round, by Steve Gladieux. | 5.89 251.96 beating Tom McEwen, 5.944 226.30 in the semis, 5.901 255.45 AHRA US 30 1982 to win over Gary Burgin's 6.061 in the finals. Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White

Notes: Was Dee Keaton involved with this car, too? Earl Wade was a partner in this car. | Dale drove this car at the big 32 car show at Irwindale on November 14. He beat Andy Clary's 'Cuda in the first round, with a 7.75/134.12. He singled in round two when John Bateman's Maverick failed to fire. In the third round, Dave Condit's car was unable to run so Dale made a 7.17/160.14 single. The easy runs came to an end when he faced Jim Dunn in the semifinal. Dunn's 7.25/155 put away Pulde who shut off early. On December 12, he was at Irwindale's Toys for Tots race. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 7.44, but he improved to a 7.16/203.60 in the first round, to beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." Unfortunately, in the semifinals, he lost a blower on the line and Don Prudhomme soloed into the final with a strong 6.98.

Notes: Consistently fast machine with a stock stroke motor. Won 1977 IHRA Dixie Nationals and World Nationals. Set 245.23 NHRA Record at Martin MI on 8/77. Stood through 1979, at least. Dale ran 6.24 at Pomona, 6.29 at Columbus, 6.36 at Englishtown, and 6.16 at Indy. | If I had to choose the season Pulde was most successful, it was a toss-up between '77 and '85. It would go to this "War Eagle" car for sentimental reasons. Pulde started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3. A 6.25 in the first round beat Jake Johnston, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. He went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ran 6.24 to qualify and finished runner-up to Eddie Pauling in Johnny Loper's Monza. The final was very interesting as Pauling had his Monza's fiberglass body come up the chassis, and he ran 13.70. Pulde had been high-tailing his out-of-shape car to an 8.55 but was said to have crossed the centerline and was disqualified. There was almost a fight as crew chief Mike Hamby argued with track personnel and Pauling about the finish. Mike said the car touched the line but did not go over it. Regardless, the decision stood. Another runner-up finish came at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Dale set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.14/234.37 before losing to Ken Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the final. He won the NHRA Division 3 points race at Indianapolis and the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he set Low ET at 6.24 before beating Tom McEwen in the final. Another win came his way at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race held there. He beat Chuck Finders in the final with a 6.22/236.22 (Top Speed). His next win came at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on June 5. He had beaten Jerry Boldenow and Safford to reach the finals, where he stopped Ray Sherman for the title. Bristol was the team's next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Pulde qualified #2 with a 6.45. Another 6.45 at 227.27 beat Safford in the opening round, and in round two, his 6.39/222.22 beat Denny Savage's 6.42/224. In the semifinals, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.28/233.76, covering Johnny White's ailing Mustang. He went up against Larry Fullerton in the title round. Fullerton's Mustang broke, and Pulde legged it to 6.30/233.76 for yet another win. It was off to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals on July 4. A 6.33 qualified #2, but in the first round, he and Fullerton both smoked the tires, with Larry's 8.23/152 winning over Pulde's 9.45/107.91. The following week (July 10), the "War Eagle" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pulde only qualified #14 with a 6.36/234.98. In the first round, his 6.46 lost to Sherman's 6.33. Two weeks later, Pulde was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he reset the IHRA Funny Car speed record to 241.28. The funnies were flying here, and Dale qualified #2 with a 6.21. He then beat Shirl Greer and Tom Prock to reach the final, facing Burgin. The two had an amazing race, with Pulde running 6.09/241.28 only to lose to Burgin's 6.08. He made up for his runner-up finish by winning the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Byron Dragway on July 31. He qualified with a 6.80/222 and then set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.37/235.60 (track record). In the final, all he needed was a 6.67/191 to beat a tire-smoking Bill Pryor at 7.22/194. That was followed by a win at Englishtown's Eighth Annual Funny Car Race of Champions on August 4. All ten cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Dale ran 6.47/234 to beat Gordon Mineo in his first race, and a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.34/236 beat a fouling Burgin in his second race. His final-round opponent was Arnie Swensen, who had gotten the second-lowest ET with a 6.42. Dale got the victory with another strong run of 6.35/235. A couple of days later (August 7), he was at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Nationals. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals before the car broke on the line, advancing eventual winner Dale Emery into the final. A week after that (August 14), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where he reset the NHRA Funny Car speed record to 245.23. It was another sixteen-car field, and Pulde set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.00/247.93 over John Pott. He "slowed" to 6.20/240 in round two to beat Ron Colson's 6.52 in the "Hawaiian," and a semifinal 6.13/245.23 beat Bob Pickett's 6.21. In the final, he went up against Burgin. Pulde had difficulties and slowed to a 15.22 in a runner-up finish to Burgin's 6.61/231. Dale qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/240.00 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships on August 21. But he boiled the tires in the second round and lost to Emery, who would win in Mike Burkhart's Camaro.Pulde qualified #8 at Indy for the NHRA U.S.Nationals, but he fell off to 6.56/225.56 in the first round and lost to Al Segrini's 6.39/225.

Notes: Raines started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 8.36 qualified #6. Don't laugh; he out-qualified Tom McEwen and John Force. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat John Collins. Unfortunately, the car went into a wheelstand in the semifinal against Gary Burgin, and he lost. He went to OCIR early in April for its first 64 car show. It was an interesting day. Not often could you run a best of 8.42 in Funny Car racing at OCIR and win both your races, but that's what Bryan did. In the first round, Sherm Gunn got out of shape and shut off, so the "Impulse" won with an 8.42. A 9.64 got the "win" light in his second race when his opponent, Johnny West, broke. This was one of those races where all the cars made two runs, and the two lowest ETs ran in the final. Raines best was over two seconds short of getting a final round birth. The following week (April 9), OCIR held another 64 car show again. It was run in the same format. In the first round, Bryan's 6.54/208.81 beat Rodney Flournoy's 7.24/186. But he had problems in his second race and shut down to an 8.77/99.00 loss to Bill Hoge's 8.45/166. He was back at OCIR on June 25 for its Nitro Championships. It was only a four-car show, and nine cars attempted to qualify. Raines' best of 6.61/210.77 failed to make the show. Bryan was at Salt Lake City in August for an eight-car show. His 6.79/205.87 qualified #4. He improved to 6.63/196.00 to beat Scott Stratford in the opening round, but he lost to the eventual winner Kenny Bernstein in the semifinal. The photo shows Ed Moore's comp number. Bryan ran 6.24/229.00 at OCIR on 8/27/1983 (see the video).

Notes: It was one of the last cars to put a blower on. The first time out was on June 29 at OCIR for a match race against the "Doug's Headers" Javelin, where he won three straight with a 7.95/184.04 best. He took a big win at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships on August 3. In the first round, he ran a 7.82/176.81 over a fouling Larry Fullerton. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.12/181.44 when Roger Wolford's Jeep lost fire. In the final, he was up against Dee Keaton's Cougar. The two SOHC Ford-powered cars ran with Gas collecting the win with an 8.15/176.12, beating Keaton's 8.24/178. On August 31, he won a race at OCIR, running a first-round 8.04/180.36 over Don Cullinan, and in the semifinal against Keaton, he lost, but Dee hurt his motor and couldn't make the final. Ronda got back in on the break rule and won with a 7.94/181.08 when Dave Beebe broke a trans. Ronda was at OCIR for a best of three match against Keaton on September 7. Dee won the first race, but Ronda ran 8.07/182 to win the second race. The final race was decided when the Cougar lost oil pressure, and Ronda singled for the win. At Irwindale's Ford vs. Mopar race on November 16, he won two of his three races with a 7.98/187.50 best. He also won two of his three races at the OCIR Manufacturers meet on December 1 with a best of 8.00/184.04, but on his third race against Leonard Hughes, he bounced off the guardrail twice. - RH
