Notes: Eddie Pauling's new Cougar for '69 used a chassis built by Bill Brawner and himself. Bill built the 392 Hemi that was bored out slightly to 396. M/T rods and pistons were used as well as an Isky cam. Mondello reworked the heads. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold. There was no transmission as the car was direct drive with a Hays triple disc clutch. The rear end was a '57 Olds with 3.90 gears.

Notes: Eddie was the early number one qualifier on Friday at the PRO Winternationals at Beeline, 1/14/77. He ran 6.24/231.95, which the local paper noted was the quickest car on the grounds for a time, even among the top fuel cars. (Jeb Allen eventually went 6.02/238.72 to lead the fuelers). Dale Emery was number two at 6.33, and Gary Burgin was number 3 at 6.42. The car ran well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Pauling qualified with a 6.29, then when eliminations began, his times dropped two-tenths. An opening round 6.09 beat Henry Harrison and another 6.09 in round two beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme. Pauling set Low ET with a semifinal 6.03 that took out Gordie Bonin. The final was run late and he went up against Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." It was an entertaining final as Pauling had the body blow off the chassis, and it seemed like Pulde had an easy win, but Pulde got out of shape and crossed the centerline. Eddie's 13.70 won the race over Pulde, who was disqualified. It didn't end there as tempers flared between Pulde's car owner, Mike Hamby, and track management. The following week (March 13), the team was supposed to race at the NHRA Gatornationals, but their win at Bakersfield had been a costly one. The team had used up one aluminum block, 40 pistons, and the Monza body. They didn't have enough parts to run at Gainesville. The Monza body became a Plymouth Arrow in April.

Notes: Listed times from Drag Stat 1969. | Mel Perry had been running Chev Funny Car's for four seasons before this car was built. His sponsor was Norwood Chevrolet who stayed with him on the '69 car. Al Graeber's Speedway Engineering built the chassis and the Camaro body came from B&N. All the interior sheet metal work was the property of Al Bergler. His crew chief, Ken Zaborski, built the 427 Chevy that powered the car. He used Howards for the rods and the cam while the 7.5:1 pistons came from Venolia. East Coast Blower Service set up the 25% overdriven GMC 6/71 blower and it sat on a Cragar manifold. Cragar also supplied the blower drive. The 60-80% nitro was fed to the engine by a four port Hilborn injector. Perry qualified eighth with an 8.37 on February 16 at Miami-Hollywood's Winter Championships. He fouled against Pete Gates in the first round. He ran at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet Invitational in May, winning his first-round race with a 9.11/170.13 over a fouling Bruce Larson. In the second round, his 8.41/189.46 lost to Frank Federici's 8.13/180. Mel had his roof blow off the car at Suffolk on July 12 while running a match race against Jim Liberman. He raced at Connecticut on September 8. A first-round 7.73/185.56 upset hometown hero, Bill Lawton (7.90/185) in the first round, but in the second round, he lost his driveshaft, giving Henry Garcia an easy ride into the semis. | Confirmed 7.965 ET at Englishtown 69.

Notes: Bob failed to qualify for an eight-car show at Lions on April 19. He did run Gordon Mineo "just for fun", but his 8.22/180.36 lost to Mineo's 7.90/177.

Notes: Bob debuted the new Starfire at Fremont's Nitro Bowl. He set Low ET and Top Speed there with a 6.49/210.77 in the opening round. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals as the 5th alternate (times unavailable). At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.709/173.41 qualified on the "bump spot" of the sixteen-car field. In the first round, Pickett beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" at 6.45/197.80, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Don Prudhomme. On April 9, he was Irwindale for the big 64 car show. While Pickett never reached the final, he did turn the third-best ET, a 6.28. Tulsa was his next stop for the AHRA Springnationals. There he lasted until round two before losing to Gene Snow. In June, he went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.43/228.43 behind Tom Hoover's 6.39. Unfortunately, he lost a driveshaft and the race in the first round to Tom Prock. He got his first NHRA National event victory a week later (June 12) at the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #8 with a 6.24/231.95. He bested Gordon Mineo in round one, 6.25/212.76 to 6/65/177. In round two, he then ran 6.21/228.42 over Eddie Pauling's identical 6.21 at 198.67. He took out Billy Meyer's 7.05 in the semis with an excellent 6.19/228.42. In the final, he faced none other than Don Prudhomme in the Army-sponsored Arrow. Bob ripped off a 6.22/231.95 to do what few did in '77 - beat the "Snake." Don followed Pickett through with a 6.26/236.84. It was a really good showing for the team. At the next NHRA race, the Summernationals at Englishtown, Bob qualified #10 with a 6.33/228.42. But he broke against Tom McEwen in the opening round. He had another first-round loss at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42 on July 31. Pickett qualified well, running 6.38/227.77 for the #3 spot in the eight-car show, but a 6.56/225.00 lost to Billy Graham's 6.35/222 in the opening round. The team did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they did attend the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. The Starfire ran well there, beating Al Bergler in the first round, with a 6.24, and he beat Prock in round two before losing to Dale Pulde's 6.13 in the semifinals with a 6.21. A week later (August 21), he was at Spokane Raceway for the AHRA World Finals. In the first round, he ran 6.52/208.80 over Bob Papirnick, but in round two, his 6.57/220.04 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.45/212 in the "Blue Max." The team qualified #11 at Indy with a 6.213/229.00. Bob beat Gordie Bonin in round one, 6.369/216.87 to 6.62/224. In round two, he lost to Tom Prock, 6.24/221 to 6.325/208.33. Bob grabbed the #13 spot at Ontario for the World Finals at 6.26/233.76. He shut off on the line against Gordie Bonin in round one. | The 6.17 might have been run during qualifying at the '77 Manufacturer's Meet, which Pickett won, according to my long-gone NDs and Drag News as a 16-year old Funny Car geek. - Joe Moore

Notes: Bob won the Cajun Nationals this year. Pickett qualified #5 at Martin, Michigan, for the NHRA Division Three race with a 6.45/207.37. He picked up to a 6.39/228.42 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to beat low qualifier Don Prudhomme's 6.14/236. He was at Brainerd International for the US Funny Car Championships. On Saturday, he raced Prudhomme, and his 6.54/220.58 lost to Prudhomme at 6.24/235. Bob qualified on the "bump" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.260/230.76. He had problems in the first round against Pat Foster and shut down to 16.20-45. The 6.26 was Bob's best NHRA time this year. Did he run 6.165 somewhere? Former Tom Hoover "Showtime" Monza.

Notes: After driving for Mickey Thompson for several seasons, Pickett went on his own in 1979. Bob was at the AHRA Winternationals but failed to reach the finals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 at 6.229/233.16, but he broke against Tom Prock in the first round. At the Gatornationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at 6.330/229.59, meaning he had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round. Sure enough, the "Snake" beat him, 6.44/228 to 6.650/221.13. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.40/233.76. A 6.55/222.77 lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 6.36/234 in round one. Bob qualified #11 at Columbus at 6.27/228.42 and lost to Tom Hoover in round one, 6.33/231 to 14.59/50. Bob qualified #13 at Englishtown at 6.25/232.55 and again had issues in round one, falling to Jim Adolph, 6.28/231 to 11.86. Bob qualified on the bump at Indy at 6.130/230.76, but round one blues set in again, and Pat Foster took a 6.25/235 to 11.22/72 decision. Bob was the fifth alternate at the Ontario Finals (no time reported, but no quicker than 6.56).

Notes: Ran 6.34 at Pomona, 6.45 at Gainesville, 6.25 at Columbus, 6.31 at Englishtown, 6.15 at Indy, 6.26 at Detroit, 6.21 at Ontario. | Tom qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," in the first round. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.45 qualified #8, and once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Bob Pickett. He was at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Dale Pulde. Shortly after that, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.98/138. In the first round, he improved to 6.43/223.88 to beat Al Bergler's 6.67/213. A 6.49/203.61 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Pulde who won with a 6.23/235. Tom went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event held in late May. On May 29, 22 cars ran the first-round, with only the four Low ET cars advancing into the semifinals. Prock didn't run quick enough to make the final four. The following day (May 30), they ran again, and this time six cars would advance. Prock almost made it as both he and Denny Savage ran 6.47, but Prock's was a tick slower at 6.476, and once again, he sat out the final eliminations. A week later (June 5), he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There, his 6.50/226.14 qualified #6. He ran 10.10 to advance in the first round, when Pickett lost a driveshaft and, in the semifinals, he ran a good 6.53/213.32, but it wasn't good enough as he lost to the eventual winner Beadle’s 6.46/210. The team's next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/228.42 qualified #10, but Prock lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. A week later (June 19) found the "Detroit Tiger" at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Prock qualified #5 6.62, but he ran a sub-par 6.97 in round one, that lost to Donnie Plunkett's 6.91. He did better at Union Grove on July 4th for the IHRA Summernationals. There, his 6.37 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.63/204.54 beat Shirl Greer's 6.65/199. In the semifinals, Prock's 6.52/206.89 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.34/214.

Notes: Tom started the season by qualifying #8 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran a first-round 7.35/169 that lost to Carl Swanson's 7.33/216. He showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and qualified #8 with a 6.338/229.59. A first-round 6.49/224 advanced when opponent Ezra Boggs was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. In round two, both he and Gordie Bonin had traction problems, and Tom came out on top with a 7.36/217 over Bonin's quicker 7.30/222. In the semifinals, he again lost traction, and his 7.41/143 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.73/225. Shortly after that, he made a stop at Green Valley Raceway for its '78 season opener. Ten cars were running, and his 6.27/229.67 beat Les Cassidy in the opening round. But he hurt the engine on the run and could not run after that. He qualified #12 at the Gatornationals with a 6.48/221 but lost to Bonin's 6.43/233 in the first round with a 6.46/226.70. The following week (March 19), LaPlace held the NHRA Division Four opener. It was an eight-car field, and Prock's 6.73/217.39 qualified #4. He improved by a tenth in the first round, where his 6.63/213.77 defeated Dennis Piranio. A off-pace 7.18/147.54 in the semifinal, lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 6.37/221. In April, he competed at an eight-car show and Suffolk. He failed to reach the finals there. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.31/227.27 qualified #13. He beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.33/229.00. Unfortunately, in round two, he shut off to a 9.52/101.80 against Don Prudhomme's 6.10/240. He finished runner-up to Gary Burgin at the UDRA North American Grandnationals at Detroit Dragway. Notes: Tom qualified #14 at Pomona at 6.369/223.88. He beat Bob Pickett in round one with a 6.227/223.88 when Pickett broke. In round two, it was Tom's turn to break on the burnout, sending Tripp Shumake on to the semifinals. That was Tom's last race in NHRA competition. Prock was at Maple Grove for its Spring All-Pro race. It was an eight-car show, and despite having piston problems, Prock and his crew chief, Joey Oster, persisted to win. His best was a 6.41/215.31 in the opening round over Rodalyn Knox. In the final, he faced Dick Rosberg, who had set Low ET and Top Speed. But the "Fighting Irish" car had to shut down on the line due to a leaking oil pump gasket. Prock made a 6.64/184.80 solo for the victory. In June, he was in Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and despite losing in the first round to Tom McEwen, he got back into the show where his 6.70/200.00 in the semifinal lost to John Pott's 6.64/209. They sold the car to Al Segrini, and it became the Super Brut.
