Notes: Meyer tried hard to be the NHRA Funny Car Champion for '77. You have to give him credit, as he had a rough season. Before the NHRA season started, he went to Irwindale for the New Year's Day race. He made it into the final before losing to Jim Dunn. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he failed to qualify. The same thing happened at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his best of 6.76 was good for the first alternate. A week later (March 20), he was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener, where he took the win. He stopped off at Irwindale for the 64-car Funny Car show but failed to run well enough to reach the finals. On May 15, he was in Houston for the NHRA Division 4 race. A 6.75/203 beat Paul Smith in the first round, but he got out of shape in the semifinals against eventual winner Dale Emery and shut off to an 8.78. Meyer's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 6.50/207.85 qualified #5, meaning that he would race low qualifier John Lombardo in the first round. John fouled in their first-round race, and Billy's 6.68/187.50 advanced. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.41/211.26 to beat Rob Bruins' 6.91/171 in the "Green Elephant." This put him into the finals against Johnny White. Unfortunately, Billy broke, and White got the win with a 6.64/197. At the NHRA Springnationals, Meyer qualified #2 with a 6.11 and lasted until the semifinals, where he broke a valve and slowed to a 7.05 loss to Bob Pickett. He did well at the Byron Manufacturer's Race, where he ran a best of 6.35. In the final, he ended up as runner-up to Don Prudhomme with his 6.44/228 losing to the "Snake's" 6.27/234. Meyer won the NHRA Division 3 race at US 131 Martin, Michigan, in July. A final round 6.22 (Low ET) at 219.31 beat Ron Colson's 6.34/218 in the "Hawaiian." It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He came off the trailer on Friday and blew an engine on a 6.46 qualifying attempt. After installing a new engine for Saturday's qualifying, Billy ran 6.17 to qualify the car easily, but he decided to make one more pass Saturday night. It was a 6.41. After qualifying ended, Meyer's 6.17/225.00 held for the #4 spot in the field. In the first round, Al Segrini shut down to a 12.76 while Billy hurt an engine on a 6.78. More thrashing in between rounds. In round two, he again got lucky when Dodger Glenn got out of shape and shut off the "Frantic Ford," and Meyer advanced with a 6.82/170. In the semifinals, he ran Ray Sherman, and Sherman went up in smoke, and a 6.66/193 propelled Billy into the final against Prudhomme. There, Meyer's Camaro broke, and Prudhomme soloed to the victory. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.33/216.34 qualified #4. In the opening round, Meyer's 6.54/205 beat Al Hanna's 6.47/222, but on the run, his engine let go, causing the car to go into a fireball. Meyer got it stopped, and he received second-degree burns on his hands. The Camaro body was destroyed, and the chassis was burnt pretty badly. He then borrowed Johnny White's Mustang to drive at the NHRA Division 4 race in Baton Rouge. He also borrowed Al Bergler's car. It wasn't until Indianapolis before he was back in his own car. There, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 6.18/227.84. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Don's 6.14/234 beat Billy's 6.28/218.97. Everything "clicked" for Meyer in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.19/213.27. He made an easy 9.56 pass in the opening round when Mike Miller's Mustang broke on his burnout. He was involved in a tire-smoking battle with Jim Adolph that saw Meyer's 6.56 coming out on top in round two. He won his semifinal race with a 6.90/195 when Gary Cochran crossed the centerline in Jim Terry's Skyhawk. That put him in the final against Dunn. Jim was to slouch as he had run 6.2s in eliminations. In the final, Dunn shut off, and Meyer got his first NHRA National Event win with a 6.53/211.26. Billy is credited with starting the semi-tractor craze to racing (see the trailer in the rear). Featured in Car Craft's Rich Man, Poor Man article. Ran 6.76 at Gainesville, 6.110 at Columbus, 6.17 at Englishtown, 6.33 at Sanair, 6.18 at Indy, and 6.19 at Ontario.

Notes: Meyer started the '82 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.97/241.28. In the first round, his tire-smoking 6.38/240.64 beat Dennis Geisler. In the second round, he was upset as Doc Halladay's 6.10/234 beat his 6.18/238.72. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.13/239.99 qualified #12. He beat Mike Dunn's 6.31/232 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.29/237.46. But in round two, he lost to John Force. In April, he was at OCIR's 64 car show, where he reached the final only to have his 6.11 finish runner-up to Don Prudhomme's 6.00.The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Meyer qualified #1 for the tough eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30 (Top Speed). In the opening round, he slowed to 6.22/207.85 and lost to Paul Smith's 6.05/241 in the "Entertainer." He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.02 and lasted until the semifinals when he shut off due to tire shake and lost to John Pott in Larry Coogle's "Sting." Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he got another runner-up finish. His 6.38/247.23 (Top Speed) finished second best to Raymond Beadle's 6.35/233 in the "Blue Max." His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car field, and his 6.00/242.58 qualified #3. In the first round, Meyer's 6.09/244 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.21/235. But he smoked the tires in the semi-final and shut off against Prudhomme. He was also running really well at Columbus in mid-June for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 5.96/246.57 qualified second behind Prudhomme's 5.92/248. Meyer beat Smith in round one before losing to eventual winner Frank Hawley, who was driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He really found some horsepower as his 5.92/254.23 (Top Speed and a new track record) qualified second to Beadle's 5.88. He also ran 253.52 on an earlier qualifying pass. Although Meyer lost to Tom Anderson in the first round, his speed was tops for the meet, even better than the TF dragsters! He didn't run as well as he hoped to at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.08/240.64 qualified #6 in the eight-car show. In the first round, his 6.23/223.88 fell to Hawley's 6.10/224. The car continued to make power at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Billy qualified #1 and once again set Top Speed of the meet over TF cars as well with a 254.23. But he smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to John Pott. Doing it at the IHRA events was one thing, but when he got to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and did it again, well, that was another thing. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with backed-up 5.829/254.95 marks during qualifying. Once again, he had Top Speed of the meet as Mark Oswald had Top Speed for the TF cars with a 254.23. Billy then ran 5.89/250.69 in the first round over Hawley. But that dreaded tire smoke did him in for round two, where he dialed in too much power and lost to Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian." Meyer was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of July. He set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying at 6.12/240.00 (Top Speed over TF cars as well). His time would have qualified #5 for TF. He then defeated Rob Williams' 6.47 with a 6.14/236.22, and a 6.19/223.88 took out Kenny Bernstein's 6.17/233 in the semi-final. He faced the "Blue Max" in the final, and Beadle shut down to 6.85/149 while Meyer ran 6.16/235.60 for the victory. He almost followed that up with another win the week later (August 8) when he finished runner-up to Dale Pulde at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. Shortly after that, he was back at OCIR for its Summer Showdown event. Billy showed up with his new EXP and ran 6.07/217.38 on his first qualifying pass. On his second attempt, the car broke a rear end. He then unloaded his Firebird and used it in the race.In round one, his 5.92/251.39 (Top Speed) beat Jim Dunn's 6.29/231. Dunn's run qualified him for the semi-final as ten cars had run the first round, with the four lowest ETs advancing to the final four. So, once again, the two raced with the same results. This time, Meyer ran 5.98/249.30 over Jim's 6.24/213. He faced the Low ET car of John Lombardo in the final, and both had horrible runs, but Meyer's troubled 8.21/107 got the win over John's 10.17. He was nowhere near as fast as the TF dragsters at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Meyer continued to run his Firebird here as he would in all the remaining NHRA events. He qualified #4 for the eight-car show with a 5.98/250.00 (Top Speed), but at this event, Oswald reset the NHRA top fuel speed record to 256.41. Meyer's opponent, Anderson, fouled in the first round, so he advanced with a 6.18/218.96. In the semi-final, his 6.08/247.93 lost to eventual winner Hawley's 5.97/238. Billy became the second funny car over 250 on July 17, 1982, with a 250.69 at the NHRA Summernationals (second entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car). His 254.95 was the highest speed of the year except for Oswald's top fuel car, which went 256 and 255 (twice). | In May, at an OCIR open 8-car MD benefit event, Billy Meyer won FC, Johnny Abbott TF. That '97 at Pomona was off and on the throttle, tire shake. Bill Flournoy from '81 was still the CC at the beginning of the year. An NOS ad in May '82, prior to his OCIR/Muscular Dystrophy win, said he'd been 252 in Ohio. Salem? A check-out run at the MD event: 6.11/246. Meyer used a Larry Minor TF motor, a Crower box, and the whole nine at the 64-FC OCIR events. In week two, they removed the scoop for visibility. Absent week two: Burgin, Iverson, whose Camaro broke something expensive-sounding on the dry hop at the first one. - Joe Moore

Notes: Mike won the third NHRA Division 6 race held in Seattle in June. In the final, his 6.37/231.95 (Top Speed) beat Gordie Bonin's 6.57/219. At Woodburn's fourth Division 6 race, the finish was reversed, with Bonin stopping Miller in the final. Mike won the PDA Championships at Seattle on July 17, and on July 31, he was runner-up to Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" at Portland International. His final round 6.39 lost to Beadle's 6.35. He was back in Seattle on August 6 for the Seafair 64 car show. He failed to reach the final, but he did beat John Collins in the first round, with a 6.60. A week later (August 13), he was at Firebird Raceway (Boise, Idaho) for the Sixth Annual Night Fire 500. Ten cars were there, and they each made two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Traction was not at its best. In Miller's first race, he ran 7.19/187 to beat a tire-smoking Ed McCulloch. In his second race, his 7.76/191 beat Collins' 7.96/195. His 7.19 qualified for the final, and his opponent was Rich Rogers, who had run 7.11. Miller got the victory with a 7.48/198 when Rich's transmission broke. His next stop was at Portland for the NHRA Division 6 final on August 19. In the opening round, his 6.41/206.89 beat Nick Harmon, but he lost to Bonin in the semifinals. It was then off to Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.91/178.57 lost to McCulloch's 6.61/206. Mike raced at NHRA Indy and Ontario. He was a 6.650/213.77 DNQ at the US Nationals but qualified #9 at the World Finals at 6.450/205.01. He broke on the burnout in round one, handing Billy Meyer a 9-second coasting victory. | The June D6 WCS win over Bonin was 6.52/231, and he beat Bonin in the PDA final with a 6.27, as reported by National Dragster (although I attended both events). - Joe Moore

Notes: Gordon ran 6.69/212/26 at the PRO event at Beeline on January 14. He ran 6.31 at Phoenix. Mineo was at Houston on May 15 for the NHRA Division Four race. He soloed in the first round, with a 6.69 when his competition broke. In the semifinal, his 6.58/204 defeated Johnny White. In the final, he faced low qualifier Dale Emery, and Gordon's 6.60 finished runner-up to Dale's 6.49. Mineo qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.390/226.13. He went into hard tire shake in the first round, and shut off to a 6.65/177.86 in a losing effort to the eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.25/212. Mineo was at Baton Rouge in August for the NHRA Division Four race. His 6.92/209 in the opening round beat Billy Meyer who was driving Johnny White's car at this event. As only six cars showed, he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal. He faced Pete Miner in the final, and Gordon's 7.05/180.36 finished runner-up to Miner's 6.96/202. Columbus was Gordon's only NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: 427 Ford Cammer, C-6 automatic combo. This was Dyno Don's last flopper. He joined many of the early funny car drivers as they migrated back to the Super Stock and the new-for-1970 Pro Stock classes. Nicholson never drove this car after November 1968, instead handing the controls to Frank Oglesby.
