Notes: Tripp qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.427/268.09. In the first round, he had a blower explode. The car caught fire, and Shumake fought for control, crossing the centerline before bringing it back into his own lane and hitting the guardrail. He got the car stopped, and he was OK. By the time the IHRA Winternationals rolled around in March, the car was fixed. Tripp qualified for the eight-car show and ran 5.56/258.62 in the first round, to beat a tire-smoking Brad Tuttle. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.44/269.46 when Ed McCulloch broke on the line. In the final, he faced low qualifier, John Force. John fouled, and Tripp took the victory by idling to an 11.10 for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.501/264.62 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to R.C. Sherman, 5.83/250 to 6.024/237.65. That was Tripp's last NHRA national event this year. A week later (March 27), he was at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. A first-round 5.69 lost to Force's 5.64. Photo from Milan, MI, 1988, with Pulde driving. Did Tripp run 5.405 in this car? Formerly listed that time but removed it until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Paul was the tenth alternate at NHRA Gainesville (times unavailable). At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.37 (speed unavailable) was the first alternate. Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but his 6.61 in the opening round lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.34. Paul was the 12th alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.37/233.76. That was his last NHRA national event of the season. The listed 6.08 at 237.46 is considerably faster than his other national event times this year. We need to validate. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1979. |

Notes: In Jan '84, Gary was at Firebird's Drag Racing Superbowl. He ran 5.99/252.10 to become the first driver over 250 at Firebird. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 at a stout 5.925/254.95, but a first-round 6.57 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.21 in the "Blue Max," but both cars were disqualified. Southern crossed the centerline, and Beadle hit the wall! Mark Oswald had the resultant bye run in round two. The team attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 6.255/234.37 best was good for the fifth alternate. The team's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There were only seventeen cars on hand for the sixteen-car field, so Gary didn't have to push too hard in qualifying, running 6.33 for the "bump" spot. He lost to Beadle in the opening round of eliminations. At NHRA Atlanta, he also ran 6.338/229.59, but that was only good for the #e alternate slot. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, now run in May, he failed to qualify in the eight-car field with a 6.07 best. The bump was a 6.03. After qualifying ended, Gary made another pass and ran 5.86/251. Southern was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He qualified on the bump spot at 6.138/241.28, but eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.88/248 beat Gary's 6.200/248.61 in the first round. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals and qualified #3 with a career-best(to this point),5.81 at 248. He broke against Al Segrini in the first round. He also lost early at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #10 with a 6.34 before losing to Dale Pulde in the opening round. Surprisingly, the team failed to qualify for the eight-car field at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 5.996/250.00 qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Tim Grose fouled against him in the first round, and Gary advanced with a 6.123/243.90. In round two, his 6.075/247.93 lost to eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.85/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. The NHRA Summenationals at Englishtown were a disappointment as Gary failed to qualify, ending up as the first alternate with a 6.052/253.52. Gary also finished one slot outside the field in Brainerd with a 6.075/249.30 effort. The team had a rough outing at Indy, finishing as the last non-qualifier with a 6.312/246.57. The car always had the power. Where did the 5.73/259 numbers occur? We remember them but not the track or year. We need confirmation. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984. | At the beginning of '84, Jeb Allen helped with the clutch, and his name was on the back quarter panel for a short time. I saw the 604 number at the Winternationals and thought it was Kenney Goodell. The announcer said Dunlap had 500 gallons of nitro and several motors. Gary Southern's last go in this car was at the Oct. 5th FC show at Carlsbad; saw it myself. ND-covered meet. In eliminations GS ran an rnon-and-off 6.64/233. Don't recall the other lane, rn'Goose/Grose, all Corvette Final. He drove the Dave Korzan Corvette at the Finals. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Second quickest at Indy only to Prudhomme's unreal 5.63. Second fastest that year only to Billy Meyer's 254.95 (if you discount a questionable 255 from Prudhomme at an AHRA race). The Indy 254.23 on September. 4, 1982, was the third entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car. | Ken made his debut in fuel Funny Car at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. He knew his stuff as he qualified #11 with a 6.05. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 6.36 in the first round, that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.34. In August, he was at US 131 Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He lasted until the semifinals when his quicker 6.03 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.07 in the "Blue Max." |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Did Johnny go 5.427/268.65 somewhere this year (perhaps a match race at Englishtown?) Seems very quick. Listing his best NHRA times until we get confirmation. | West's first time out driving for Roland Leong was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The team did pretty well, qualifying #8 with a 5.775/255.68 and running an even better 5.749/256.41 to beat Tripp Shumake's 5.85/237 in the first round. In the second round, he ran Dale Pulde, but West crossed the centerline on his run and was disqualified. They qualified #8 again at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.87/256.55. Unfortunately, West smoked the tires to a 6.35/250.13 loss to Scott Kalitta's also traction plagued 6.22/186. At Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Johnny qualified #8 (again) with a 5.86/251.25. He beat Bruce Larson in round one, and a 6.84/244.83 advanced into the semifinals when John Force crossed the centerline. In the semis, he fouled against Jim Head. Famoso held an eight-car Funny Car show for its Bakersfield March (May) Meet. Roland and crew were there and West ran a 5.88/252.10 to qualify #5. He faced low qualifier Force in the first round, and his 5.84 lost to Force's 5.80. Baton Rouge and the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and a 6.01/243.70 qualified Johnny #10. He picked up to a 5.83/252.59 in the first round, to beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.88/237. He lost traction in round two, but his 6.13/240.89 still beat Scott Kalitta's 6.87/145. In the semifinals, Johnny's 5.94/244.43 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.86/245. On June 15 they were at Columbus, Ohio, for the NHRA Springnationals. West qualified the car #6 with a 5.83/251.46 and beat Gary Phillips in the first round, but he lost in round two. They made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and Johnny qualified #2 with a 5.84/252.10 behind Bernstein's 5.62 (Low ET). A first-round 5.91/251.39 beat Jerry Caminito and in the semifinals, a 5.90/249.30 beat Kalitta's 6.05/240. In the final, he met Bernstein and the Daytona broke, giving Kenny a solo for the victory. At the end of June, the were up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The "Hawaiian" was making some horsepower there as he ran a 5.74 at a whopping 261.93 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. West ran a first-round 5.78/234.86 over Ed McCulloch's 5.94/250. In round two, a 5.79/259.21 beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen, but in the semifinals, he fouled against Bernstein. He won an eight-car show at Englishtown on July 2. His best run there was a 5.78/258.62 in the first round, while beating Larson's 6.31/184. He got the win by beating Tom Hoover in the final with a 6.17/241.93 over Tom's 6.41/237. They were back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.72/261.17 qualified #6 and he beat Caminito in the first round, but a 5.85 in round two lost to Bernstein's 5.67. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Leong proved that he could still tune a car to big numbers. A 5.87/253.16 (Top Speed) qualified #3. West made his way into the semifinals before running an off pace 6.03/237.71 that lost to Bernstein's 5.86/242. He qualified #4 with a 5.78/257.87 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Johnny beat Brad Tuttle's quicker 5.93/247 in the first round, with a 5.95/250.00. In the second round, he lost to McCulloch. A week later (August 24), they were at Cordova for the World Series where West set a 260.34 track speed record. Qualified number one at the NHRA Finals with his best national event times, 5.584/262.62. Unfortunately, Dale Pulde got to him in round one, 5.80 to 5.90. |

Notes: Jim was the third alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.102/236.34. He was running this car in Milan, Michigan, in the first week of July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified for the eight-car field, but his parachute fell out against Mark Oswald in the first round, who advanced with a 5.75/254. Jim was the #16 qualifier at 5.871/237.40 at NHRA Brainerd. He improved to a nice 5.706/240.19 to take out Raymond Beadle in round one. Don Prudhomme took him out in round two, 5.66/255 to 6.001/218.39. Photo from Indy 1987, where Jim was the sixth alternate at 5.841/239.04. The car was the former Bill Dailey Pegasus that he raced in 1986. White's family was in the carpet business hence the name. White only ran this car in the 1987 season before driving for Roland Leong. |

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1989. Jim replaced Johnny West as the driver of Roland Leong's "Hawaiian" entry for '89. The team started the season by qualifying #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.43/258.24. Jim cut a good light in his first-round race against Mike Dunn and his 5.46/258.10 beat Mike's better 5.42/269. In round two he beat Art Hendey with a 5.55/216.50, but as can be seen by his speed, he hurt some parts and was unable to make his semifinal race against Bruce Larson. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, the team qualified #13 and lost to Larson in the first round. White qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but once again he was on the trailer after the first-round. Things went even worse at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where the team failed to qualify. The "Hawaiian" was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. Jim qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.54/251.32, but he smoked the tires to a 6.33/181.96 in the first round, that lost to Tony McCallum's 5.76/247. The team continued to have trouble qualifying for NHRA fields. At the Springnationals, White was first alternate with a best of 5.58/260.11. He managed to get into the show when #15 qualifier McCallum had a blower explode and destroy his T-Bird. Jim beat John Force in the first round. In round two, Kenny Bernstein smoked the tires against him and Jim's 5.70/253 advanced. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. The NHRA tour then shifted to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.64/237.52 qualified #11. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.63/78.78 that lost to Larson's 5.49/265. After that, it was back to the US at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The "Hawaiian" qualified #2. A 5.63/248.75 advanced past R.C. Sherman in the first round, but the Daytona broke on the line in the semifinals against Doc Halladay. The following week (July 9), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where they again failed to qualify. White qualified well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 5.68/255.53 for the #6 spot. He beat Gary Densham in the first round, before losing to Larson's 5.65 with a 5.78. It seemed as though the team found something as at Sonoma they qualified #5 with a 5.40/268.41. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round, with a 5.67/258.74. Jim then had problems and shut off to a 10.69 that lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.38/268. The good runs continued when at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. Jim qualified #3 with a great 5.33/266.98. A 5.48/253.16 beat a tire-smoking McCallum in the first round, and in round two, his 5.50/258.77 beat Jim Murphy. He was in the semifinals at an NHRA national event for the third time this season, but once again the gremlins stepped in and he broke against Larson. On August 13, he was at Martin, Michigan, for its Wolverine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and all cars ran two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Jim ran a 6.03/246.21 in his first race over Ronny Young, but in his second race, he smoked the tires and shut off. His ETs were not good enough to advance to the final. His next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.45/267.69, but he slipped to an off pace 7.51/111.85 in the first round, that lost to R.C. Sherman's 5.68/256. |

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984. | Della attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals and Southern Nationals, but without full runs. However, at the NHRA Springnationals, her best of 6.841/209.30 failed to make the show, but showed promise. Woods then ran her best time since returning to the fuel Funny Car ranks at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Her 6.54/201 ended up as the first alternate, but Murf McKinney crashed in Larry Coogle's "Sting" and Della took his place in the field. In the opening round, both she and Tim Grose smoked the tires and Tim's 7.45/190 narrowly beat her 7.65/169. Della improved to a 6.311/234.98 at Indy, but was the 10th alternate in the tough field. That was Della’s last NHRA event of the year. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. Won Southern Nationals at 21 years of age. As of 2016, still the youngest nitro funny car winner in NHRA history. Was the NHRA Rookie of the Year for 1991. Had a great season. Also painted as The Screamer this year. |
