Notes: Motry ran the Byron Dragway Coors Manufacturers Funny Car Showdown in the Unlimited Funny Car race with Nitro Alcohol & Jet Funny Cars, where he faced Al Hanna's Eastern Raider Jet in round 1 & Motry's was violently out of shape & his 8.76/110.76 was no match for Hanna's 6.93/225.00. Motry would run Fill Smith's Flashback Jet FC in his final run, where Motry "improved" with a 7.14/195.65 the hard way when he was again out of shape & killed the engine while Smith blasted away with a 6.58/240.64. Notes: Second Fever car. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. | The second Vette, the yellow one, was a handful as well. It would make it to the end of the track with a stock stroke motor, but was way up on the tires. I remember looking at the black tracks: They were only about three inches wide at the finish line. Both of the Vettes always had handling problems - they got up way too high on the tires. They didn't have enough downforce, due to how close the spoiler was to the rear of the roof - I think. That did produce big mph. We ran over 230 a number of times, with a best ET of 6.37, running a stock stroke motor built - I believe - to approximately the same combination as those that Dale Pulde and Cliff Brown were running. Jungle watched the car run somewhere one day, shook his head and said you guys gotta put a lot more spoiler on that thing. Finally, I asked the guys who owned the car - Tollstam, Trybula, and Marrone - to make a new spoiler for the rear, at least ten inches taller with air dams on the side. I was working on the car by myself at the time, and I had all I could do to get the motor and clutch ready. I dropped the body off at Frank's boneyard, and he said he'd try to get it done. He didn't. Our next race was at Martin. I had another stroker motor in the car, and Ed went backwards into the guardrail at about half track when the car got totally loose. That was the last of the Corvette experiment. When McEwen premiered his Vette the next year (with the newer body style) it had a tall spoiler with air dams. And yes, somewhere in between the US 30 crash and the Martin crash, the car got turned around at Detroit Dragway and slid through the traps backwards. And that's the whole Fever Vette story. - Paul Stenquist

Notes: Looking back at some notes I made back in the day, I think the best run for Fever in '76 was a 6.61/237 at US 30. I choose to forget most of what happened in '76 :-). Our car always ran about the same ETs at US 30 as elsewhere, but it would mile per hour better if Ed drove it out the back door. That's because the speed trap at 30 was from the finish line to 30 feet beyond the finish line, while at other tracks, it was from 15 feet in front of the finish line to 15 feet behind the finish line. So It was possible to add another five to ten mph. That 6.61/237 at 30 in '76 probably would have been a 6.61/227 at Martin. - Paul Stenquist | The car was destroyed at Martin, Michigan, on May 23 during the NHRA Division Three race. Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. Frank was at Rockingham in September for the IHRA US Open Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and he ended up as the first alternate at 7.78. But when Don Casto's car broke, he got into the field. In the opening round, Rodger Hamrick broke, and Frank advanced with a 7.87/120.32. In the second round, he and his opponent, Dale Pulde, got crossed up, and his 11.88 lost to Dale's 9.60.

Notes: Confirmed 5.337 at 277.00 at Seattle and Pomona Finals 1988. Also 5.378 from Indy 1988. Where was this 5.290/278 from? Photo from Milan, MI, 1988. | Oswald started the '88 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #6 with a 5.45. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, and in round two, a 5.49/262 beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein. But in the semifinals, Mark got out of shape and shut off against Jim Head. The team then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where they promptly smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Ed McCulloch. A week later, on March 20, they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.37/275.98 and in round one, defeated Bruce Larson. In the second round, a 5.78/264 beat Scott Kalitta. He moved into the finals by running a 5.44/270 over a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. But a final round 5.35/278 by Bernstein ended the day for Oswald. He made up for the loss by winning the IHRA Supernationals at DeSoto Dragway, Bradenton, on March 27. The race was originally slated to run on March 6, but it was rained out. Mark ran 5.62 and 5.66 to work his way into the final where his final round 5.67/249 took the victory over Kalitta's close 5.69/256. At IHRA's Texas Nationals, Mark ran well again. He ran 5.42/267 in the first round, and in round two, a 5.40/267.06 beat Tim Grose. But a consistent 5.41/266.03 in the semifinals lost to Mike Dunn's 5.39/275. Oswald made it into the semifinals at the next event as well, the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Mark advanced past the first-round with a 5.67, and in round two, a 5.55/260 got around an out of shape Tom Hoover. But he lost to McCulloch's Low ET of the meet 5.52 in the semis. On May 1 they were at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Mark qualified #2 and in the first round, he advanced with a 5.83/260.11 when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, he fouled against Head. Mark got his first NHRA victory of the year at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals on May 15. A 5.59 qualified #4 and be beat Larson in round one. A 5.55/268.73 (Top Speed) beat Grose in round two and in the semifinals, a 5.62/268 beat Head. In the final, he out drove McCulloch by running a 5.55/267 to win over the "Ace's" 5.54/262. A week later (May 22) he was back in the winner's circle at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He stopped Hoover in the semifinals with a 5.64/261.17 and went on to win the event by running 5.65/259.51 in the final over Dale Pulde's 5.75/224 in Billy Meyer's car. On May 29, he made it as far as the semis at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In his semifinal race, he hazed the tires and lost to Bernstein. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, they went out early when Oswald smoked the tires and crossed the centerline in the first round, against Pulde. Things went far better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Mark ran 5.47/266.98 to qualify #3, and then ran 5.59, 5.55/264, and a semifinal 5.49/267 over a fouling John Force to meet up with Prudhomme in the final. The "Snake" took the win with a 5.44/260, but it was still a good showing for the "Candies and Hughes" team. They followed it up with another runner-up finish at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 10. Mark set Low ET and a new track record with a 5.52 at 256.11 in the first round, while beating R.C. Sherman and in the semifinal, he only needed a 6.00/178.64 to advanced over a tire smoking Pulde. In the final, it was Mark's turn to smoke the tires and he shut off to a 9.89/74.97 to lose to McCulloch's 5.54/265. A week later found the team at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.49/261.78 qualified #6. He beat Eric Reed in the first round, but he lost to the race's eventual winner Prudhomme, in round two.

Notes: At Pomona for the Winternationals, Mark didn't qualify all that well with a 5.44/269.13 fitting in the #11 spot. He improved to a first-round 5.34/274.05 over Ed McCulloch, but in the second round, he lost to Chris Lane's 7.17/246 to Mark's 7.50/170.71 in a troubled run for both drivers. He qualified much better at the next NHRA race, the Supernationals, where a 5.29/272.23 put him in the #3 spot. Mark made it into the semifinals before smoking the tires and losing to Bruce Larson. At the Gatornationals, the team again qualified #3 with a 5.34/271.41 getting the spot. Unfortunately, they lost to Art Hendey in the second round. A 5.55/260.86 qualified in the dreaded #9 position at the Southern Nationals setting up a first-round matchup against low qualifier Larson. Bruce triumphed over Oswald in that race. By the fifth race of the season, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, the team was getting antsy to win. A 5.36/275.06 qualified #4, and Mark ran 5.38 over Eric Reed in the first round. In the second round, he got a break when John Force broke at half-track and a 5.40/259 advanced into the semifinals to meet Don Prudhomme. In that race, a 5.41/272 beat Prudhomme's quicker 5.39, and the "Candies and Hughes" car was in its first final of '89. All good things come to an end, and in the final against Kenny Bernstein, the Probe broke, giving Kenny a single for the win. It was off to the Cajun Nationals on May 28 for the sixth stop on the NHRA tour. A 5.44/266.66 qualified #2 just behind Prudhomme. Mark beat a tire-smoking Force in the first round with a 5.52/264. A second-round 5.57 lost to McCulloch's 5.46. It was then off to National Trail for the Springnationals, where Mark qualified #5 with a 5.34/271.49. An even better 5.32 in the first round beat Frank Kramberger, but the car broke after his burnout against Tom Hoover in the second round. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Oswald ran 5.51/253.95 to qualify #2. He beat R.C Sherman in the first round, with a 5.49/246.23 and a second-round 5.60/256.55 beat Force's 5.63/263. In the semi's, another 5.60/238.98 beat Hendey and set up another final round matchup against Bernstein. Oswald didn't break this time, but his 5.54/258.69 just lost to Kenny's 5.51/265. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, a 5.36 qualified #4. He beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, but against Don Gay Jr. in round two, the Probe broke. It was beginning to become a long winless season for the team when they rolled into Denver for the Mile High Nationals. They qualified #3 with a 5.59/253.09 and beat Gay Jr. in the first round and in round two a 5.64/249 beat Force's 5.70. In the semifinals against Bernstein, Mark beat him with a track record 5.50 at 258, putting himself in the final against Larson. In the final, Oswald ran a 5.62 but lost it on the starting line to Bruce's slower 5.66. The eleventh race of the season was the California Nationals on July 30. Once again, the team made it to the finals. A 5.40/274.47 qualified #4. He beat Mike Dunn in the first round, and in the second round, both he and Hendey smoked the tires with Oswald's 6.49/239.61 coming out on top. Mark pulled a driving job on McCulloch in the semifinals beating Ed's 5.47/270 with a 5.49/267.85. In the final, he ran Prudhomme, who had set Low ET and Top Speed (5.30/276.49). Mark picked it up in the final to a 5.36/274.72 but still lost to the "Snake's" 5.32/272. It was the fourth runner-up finish of the year for the team. The tour continued to Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Mark qualified #8 with a 5.43/266.27 but lost to R.C. Sherman in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. A 5.46/263.23 qualified #7. In the first round, the Probe spun the tires to a 6.12/248.07 and lost to Larry Camenzind's 5.94/212. The bad luck continued right into Indy for the US Nationals. The team qualified #5 with a 5.33/272.06, but upstart Scott Kalitta beat them in the first round. After losing in the first round at the last three events, the team rebounded somewhat at the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. Mark qualified #2 with a 5.21/283.10. A 5.29/265.09 advanced when Tom Hoover fouled in the first round. In round two, he backed up his qualifying marks for both ends of the NHRA record when he beat Tony McCallum with a 5.23/279.50. Unfortunately, Mark smoked the tires to a shut-off 8.86/87.20 loss to Force's 5.34/276 in the semifinals. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, a 5.19/280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #3. Oswald beat Mike Dunn in the first round, with a 5.24 and a second-round 5.29/273.39 beat Al Hofmann in round two. Mark finally got one back from Larson in the semifinal when his 5.23/281.60 beat Bruce's close 5.24/274. In the final, he met Prudhomme, and while Don blasted to a 5.26/269 victory, Mark smoked the tires to another runner-up finish. The team got its first #1 qualifying position of the year at the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway with a 5.41 (Low ET) doing the deed. Things looked rosy until Mike Dunn put them on the trailer in the first round. It was back to Pomona for the season-ending World Finals, where a 5.28 (Low ET) at 279.41 got their second pole of the year. In the first round, he beat Hoover with a new NHRA Top Speed record of 283.28, but he ended his season in the next round against McCulloch when Mark spun the tires and lost to Ed's 5.56/264. Also, set the record at 5.214 at Maple Grove 9/89 and 5.298/283.10 National Records at 89 Supernationals. The 283.28 National Record was the fastest NHRA speed of the decade (second only to Scott Kalitta's 286.62 at IHRA Ennis 1988). Also, great 5.232 at 89 Chiefs was part of the quickest side-by-side pass (Bruce Larson 5.247). Also, 281.60 at Chiefs was half of the fastest side-by-side pass (Larson 274.72). Mark Oswald and the "Candies and Hughes" team had a good season in '89 despite finishing the season fourth in points. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Bob was at Cayuga for its May Day FC Championships. It was an eight-car field, and in the first round, his 6.99/190.27 beat Ed O'Brien's 7.50/196. In the semi-final, his 7.19/201.34 lost to O'Brien's 7.05/198. Bob came back out later for a consolation race, and his 7.91/167.28 beat an engine-blowing Willie Borsch. Notes: Henry's first NHRA national event of the year was the Cajun Nationals in Baton Rouge, and he qualified #11 at 6.777/216.91. He won his first-round with a 15-second shutoff as Mark Oswald did not show. In round two, he lost to Raymond Beadle, 6.10/250 to 9.789/86.90. Phillips was at Atco in the first week of June for the IHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, he had the car turn into a "fireball" during qualifying. The car ended up in a lake at the end of the track as the fire burnt the parachute off. He was ok, but the car was badly damaged. They must have really worked on it as he showed up at Columbus the following week for the NHRA Springnationals. He ended up as the sixth alternate with a 6.365/223.82 best. Those were Henry's best times of the year. He went to Denver and was the third alternate at 6.611/169.87. Henry burned the car to the ground at Indy '87 on a 6.964/146.43 effort. Bill witnessed this. Henry suffered second and third-degree burns on his hands and face following his engine fire during qualifying. He never rebuilt the car. Photo from Indy 1987.
