Notes: Kalitta competed at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 6.57 qualified #13, and he lost to Prudhomme in the opening round. Shortly after that (July 8), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where his 6.24/222 qualified #14. In the opening round, Scott's shut-off 6.53/157 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.99/205. Scott only ran one NHRA national event in the funny car this year, Brainerd. He was the fifth alternate with a troubled 9.305/88.58. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984.

Notes: After not getting out of the six-second zone in '85, Scott did much better in '86. Scott qualified on the "bump spot" at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.03/235.10. In the first round, both he and opponent Johnny West smoked the tires, with Kalitta's 6.22/186.25 getting the win over West's 6.35/250. In round two, Scott advanced with a 7.35/202.06 when John Martin lost a supercharger, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the semifinals. A best of 7.01/136.76 failed to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals. Shortly after that, he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.90/248.61 qualified #7. He had help from Larry Frazier at this race. In the first round, Kalitta had some trouble controlling his newly found horsepower, and the car ended up crossing the centerline in his race with Tom McEwen. He then went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he managed to qualify in the top half of the field with a 5.838/250.20 (#6). In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking McCulloch with a 5.804/252.10, but a 6.87/145.63 lost in round two against West. On June 15, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.888/246.64. He lost to low qualifier Mark Oswald in the first round. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Kalitta qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A first-round 5.90/243.24 beat Della Woods' 6.24/217, but a semifinal 6.05/240.64 lost to West's 5.90/249. Near the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.903/243.50. Scott's first-round 5.924/251.81 lost to Kenny Bernstein's Low ET of the meet blast of 5.66 at 258. The following week (July 6), Scott was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There, he qualified #5 in the eight-car field, but he got out of shape and shut off in the first round, losing to Tim Grose. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, Scott’s 5.799/251.25 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Bernstein in round one. The best NHRA speed was 254.45 at NHRA Maple Grove. Did Scott run 258.52 somewhere this year? Was this a new body or car? (He ran off the end of the track at an IHRA race with the white body, tore up the front end. Probably a new body.) Notes: Only seventeen cars showed up to qualify in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Kramberger's 5.89/251.81 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, his 5.88/241.35 fell to Scott Kalitta's 5.57/265. He failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Frank was having all kinds of problems trying to get in a good run at Indy to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals. It didn't happen, as the best pass he could make was 10.84/82.25. He did get a little consolation when he won the award for "best appearing car." He didn't have much better luck the following week (September 10) at Darlington, where he was the fourth alternate for the eight-car field with a 6.52/198.42 best at the IHRA US Open Championships. Not many teams could say they picked up over four seconds from one week to the next. But he improved more at Maple Grove on September 17 for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, his 5.61/227.15 qualified on the "bump," but he broke against eventual winner John Force in the first round. Photo from Indy 1989.

Notes: Martin was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. The quickest the car had ever run before this race was 5.97 at the '85 NHRA Winternationals. Here he had a new crew chief, Amos Satterlee, tuning the car. The first pass saw John lose two rods on a 6.09/245.23, but he came back out later and ran 5.83/252.10. That was impressive enough, but on yet another pass, he ran 5.78/247.25 to qualify #2 in the eight-car field behind Kenny Bernstein's unreal,5.66. In the first round, Brad Tuttle lost fire, and John soloed with a 5.83/241.28, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.74/242.58 qualified #5. He beat Tuttle in round one, with a 5.80/248.61, but he got out of shape and shut off against Bernstein in round two. Atlanta held an eight-car show in March, and John qualified #4 with a 6.26/238.72. The track was tricky as Hoover qualified #1 with a 5.99. Martin's 6.02/233.76 in the first round, advanced when Doc Halladay lost reverse after his burnout. In the semifinals, his 6.00/243.24 beat Paul Smith's 6.07/236 in the "Custom Body" car. This put him into the final against Hoover. Tom overpowered the track and smoked the tires while John motored to the victory with a 6.02/243.90. Things didn't go so well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where the car's best of 6.06/241.02 was good for the first alternate. But the race was rained out and postponed one week, and qualifiers Dale Pulde and Smith left for Darlington to run the IHRA Winternationals. This put John back into the show. A 5.88/227.15 in the first round, beat Halladay's 6.15/240, but in round two, his blower exploded, and he lost to Scott Kalitta. The team was back at Firebird Raceway in April for the Coors Funny Car car show. All cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET's meeting in the final. Martin did not reach the final as a first-round 6.46/176.81 lost to Johnny West's 6.10/241 and a 6.14/233.76 in the second round lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.71/252. He lost to Force again at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Martin qualified #12 with a 5.93/241.67, but Force got him in the first round. The team had a good showing at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet in May. John qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.85/249.30. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, with a 5.76 at only 222 and a tire-smoking 6.78/199 in the semifinals beat Mike Dunn's out of shape 7.87/117 in Joe Pisano's car. In the final, he was up against Force again. The results were the same, Force's 5.92/251 got the victory over Martin's 6.01/229.59. It was then off to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.04/238.15 qualified #11. John was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #14 with a 5.87/240.57. An off-pace 6.06/218.97 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.74/242 in the first round. He skipped going to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, going to Spokane instead for the ADRA World Finals. There he lasted until the semifinals before shutting off and losing to Gary Phillips. Martin was back on the NHRA tour for the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, but his 5.86/236.46 failed to qualify and was good for the third alternate. He ran much better at the NHRA Fallnationals, qualifying in the top half of the field with a 5.82/246.83 (#7). A first-round 5.91/242.06 got around Jim Dunn, but a 6.03/214.54 in round two lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.80/254. Back at Pomona for the season-ending NHRA World Finals, he ran 5.77/250.00 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, on the run, the blower exploded, and it tore the body off the car. He was OK but could not run in eliminations, and the first alternate, Tim Grose, replaced him in the field. Martin ran well enough to finish fourteenth in the NHRA points standings. Photo from Indy 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Qualified #4 at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 5.885/238.72.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Also 5.49 at Ennis All Stars race in April. Battle for Funny Car ET record at Ennis 87 was amazing: John Force (5.453), Mark Oswald (5.449), Mike Dunn (5.443), and Force (5.396) all reset the mark, but Ed McCulloch finally landed the mark with the 5.366 (with a best speed of 271.73). Later went 272.06 at Pomona Finals 87. | Ed started the season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A 5.95/238.72 beat Tom Hoover's 5.97/238 in the first round, but he lost a clutch in the semifinals and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 5.59/266.11 to qualify #5. He picked up to 5.53/266.90 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen's 5.68/247. In the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 11.28/74.75 loss to Bernstein. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to McEwen. The following week (March 22) found the team at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ed qualified #2 with a 5.57/266.58 behind Bernstein's track record 5.47. Billy Meyer broke against him in the first round, and McCulloch advanced with a 5.62/256.84. In round two, his 5.58/265.09 took out John Force's 5.69/257. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Johnny West's 5.76/252 in the "Hawaiian." Then came the NHRA Winston All Star race on April 5th at the Texas Motorplex. Ed qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 5.49/273.05, but he broke in the first round, against Meyer. Only sixteen FC's showed for the sixteen available spots at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals so qualifying was easy. Still, Ed laid down a 5.68/262.85 to qualify #3. A 6.01/252.45 advanced in round one, when Doc Halladay lost a blower belt and in round two he beat a tire-smoking Hoover with a 5.66/260.94. But he lost to eventual winner Bernstein in the semifinals. Ed did not race at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, choosing to go to Famoso for the Bakersfield meet that was running on the same weekend in early May. He ran 5.68/260.11 to qualify #2 behind Force's 5.66. These two would work their way into the final. McCulloch's first-round 5.85/256.41 beat Don Prudhomme who overpowered the track and smoked his tires. A 5.79/259.36 beat Jim Murphy in the semifinals. Force and McCulloch had a good race in the final, but Force's 5.72/260 got the victory over Ed's 5.79/236.84. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 5.88/252.38 qualified #5. He beat Eric Reed in round one, with a 5.87/257.50, but the car broke in round two giving Bernstein a free trip into the semifinals. Because of the Cajun Nationals being postponed one week due to rain, it was run on the same weekend as the IHRA Springnationals and subsequently, Ed did not run at Bristol. He did run a week later (June 7) at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.51 at 263.92 while beating Hoover and a semifinal 5.58/257.14 solo advanced to the final when Steve Hodkinson failed to show. In the final, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird. Mark got the victory with a 5.60/265 while Ed continued to wait for his first victory of '87. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #3 with a 5.74/252.52. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" before sleeping on the line in round two where his 5.81/253.95 lost to Meyer's 5.86/250. NHRA's Grandnationals in Canada had only fifteen cars show for the sixteen-car field, but McCulloch still ran hard registering a 5.72/258.32 to qualify #2 behind Force at 5.68. Ed's 5.76/250.69 in the first round, beat West's 5.83/257. A second round 5.88/247.38 took care of Jim Head and in the semifinals, his 5.74/248.07 got the best of Oswald. Once again, he was in a final, and he faced Force again. The results were the same as they had been at the Bakersfield race, John won with a 5.65/257 while Ed shut off with problems. He suffered a first-round loss to Darrell Amberson at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he lost to McEwen in the first round. That after qualifying #7 with a 5.67/256.77. The team was long overdue for a win. It didn't happen at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 5.87/243.96 qualified #7, and he beat Craig Epperly and West with times of 5.96/235.47 and 6.14/229.00 to reach the semifinals. Crew chief Bernie Fedderly dialed in too much power and Ed smoked the tires and lost to Force's 5.88/245. On August second, Seattle held an Funny Car show with ten Funny Car's running two rounds with the two lowest ET's running in the final. Ed ran 5.75/258.88 over Gary Densham and 5.78/253.52 over Beadle's quicker 5.76/249. His first-round 5.75 made the final where he ran Force who made the final with a 5.63. Once again, John gave Ed another runner-up finish with his 5.67/256 beating the "Miller" car's 5.72/254.95. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Ed qualified #6 with a 5.64/257.73. He shut off to a 9.26/90.66 win in the first round, when McEwen broke, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 17.94/44.25 loss to Bernstein's 5.57/265. Finally, a win! On August 30, he won the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. He qualified #2 behind Oswald and then beat Scott Kalitta and Halladay before stopping Oswald in the final. For a team running this well it was a long wait for its first win of the season. Then it was off to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. The Big Bud Shootout was run in conjunction with this race and Ed qualified third for the eight-car field based on qualifying results for the past year. He lasted unit round two where he broke an oil line and shut off against Oswald. The following day for the Nationals, Ed qualified #5 with a 5.61/268.01. A first-round 5.79/259 beat Tim Grose's 5.97/241. In round two the car broke a crank and went into a fireball in a loss to Bernstein. Ed got the car stopped and he was OK. RH
