Notes: Doc did not have a good weekend on March 20 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.817/252.03, but the car went into heavy tire shake in the opening round of eliminations. That caused the body to shake and jam the throttle open in his race against Scott Kalitta. Halladay rode the centerline and knocked out the top-end photocells before enough air got under the body to rip in off the chassis. He ran a low gear only 6.54/212 and was unhurt except for his pocketbook. Halladay qualified #13 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.741/249.51. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round, 5.47/263 to 5.825/270.77. Shortly after that, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. There, his 5.77/248.62 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. Doc qualified #14 at the Houston Supernationals at 5.633/249.44. He lost to Prudhomme again in round one, 5.30/267 to 5.719/247.11. That was Doc's last NHRA national event of the year. Confirmed 5.633 at Houston Fall '88 and 252.03 from Gainesville '88. Where was the 5.53 at 267 run? | Halladay turned a 5.87/240.0 while winning the Funny Car title at the 1988 Olympics of Drag Racing (Union Grove, Wis.) He held both ends of the track record (with better times) at the time. - RT | Photo from Milan, Mich., 1988.

Notes: After building a new "first of its kind" funny car, it was named NHRA New England Division's most beautiful car. The new car had consistent times in the 6.1's and a best of 6.06. Al failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. He also attempted to qualify at the NHRA Summernationals, but a best of 6.40/229 was good for the fourth alternate. He was in Canada on August 9 for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5 with a 6.42/225.56. In the first round, he ran low qualifier Tim Grose and Hanna's 6.47 lost to Grose's 6.18. He was in New England on August 17 for the NHRA Division 1 final. Al qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.13/229.59, and in the first round, his 6.17/227.84 beat Al Segrini's 6.24/229. He lost to eventual winner Gary Burgin in the semifinals when he got out of shape and crossed the centerline. He was back in New England in October for its FC Nationals. Al's 6.38/228.42 in the opening round beat Al Hofmann. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1982.

Notes: Harris started the year in his Omni. Burned the paint off it at a March match race at Englishtown. Repainted it as the Brutus and then completely destroyed the car at Maple Grove. He replaced it with the old Arrow and raised funds by swapping his Chaparral fifth wheel with Bruce Larson for the old USA-1 ramp truck. Roy competed at Englishtown's Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. While he didn't reach the final, he made a few good runs, such as a 6.40/234.38 over Bruce Larson. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he was the third alternate with a 6.420/233.76. Another race held at Englishtown was its FC Race of Champions event held in August. In the opening round, Harris's 6.65/220.58 lost to Larson's 6.37/226. He also lost in the first round at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships, where he lost to Paul Smith. Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Qualified on the bump at 2006 US Nats at 5.809. We need to confirm these best times for 2006. Ran identical 5.531 at Ennis Fall 87. Drag Racing List has 5.686/261.62 in the 86/87 issue. | Head started the '86 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 5.90/247.93. In the first round his 5.93/257.14 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86/245. Jim attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.16/205.47 failed to make the field. Atlanta held an eight-car show early in the year and Jim qualified #5 with a 6.39/188.28. Unfortunately, on his qualifying pass, the blower let go and it tore up the tinwork in the Firenza. He was unable to run and alternate Steve Hodkinson replaced him in eliminations. The car was fixed in time for Gainesville and the running of the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #11 with a 5.89/253.52. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he ran 5.91/250.41 to qualify #10. He beat Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round, and in round two, both he and Paul Smith smoked the tires with Jim's 6.22/248.48 getting the win. In the semifinals, Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian," fouled against him, so he motored into the final with an 8.38/108.93. In the final, he ran Ed McCulloch and although both ran 6.00 (Head at 250.13), Ed got the win. Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and Head was there, qualifying #8 with a 5.94/250.97. A first-round 6.07/214.18 beat Jerry Jefferson, but in round two against Billy Meyer, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline.

Notes: At Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing, Hoover ran 5.84/241.93 to qualify #4 in the eight-car field. A first-round 5.86/245.23 beat Jim Head's 5.93/257, and in the semifinals, his 5.94/233.16 beat a tire-smoking John Martin. This put Tom into the final, where he ran John Force. A 5.91/240.00 wasn't enough to overcome John's 5.80/254. Tom qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.84/246.57. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.60-98 that lost to John Collins' 5.80/210. Atlanta held an eight-car Funny Car show early in the year, and Hoover qualified on the pole with a 5.99/243.90. He beat a tire-smoking Steve Hodkinson in the first round, with a 6.00/236.84, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.86/236.22 when Mark Oswald broke against him in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. In the final, he faced John Martin, and unfortunately for Tom, he smoked the tires to an 11.17 and watched as Martin roared to the win with a 6.02/243. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.88/250.69 qualified #9. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein. Hoover stepped it up to a 5.766/254.23, but it wasn't enough to overcome Kenny's 5.64/255. Back at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Tom qualified #11 with a 5.93/245.76. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Photo from Indy 1986. Tom's best times were 5.766 in the first round, at NHRA Gainesville and 261.62 Top Speed of the Meet at NHRA Brainerd.

Notes: In January, Hoover started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was driving his new Firebird Trans Am. It was an eight-car field, and he ran 5.91/227.27 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.97/238.09 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.95/238. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.68/252.31. In the first round, both Hoover and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car ran 5.76 (Hoover at 229.65), but Oswald won. On March 15, Tom was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 5.81/248.61 (Top Speed). He advanced to the final, where he faced Jim Head. In the final, he slowed to 6.01/228, which lost to Jim's 5.66 track record pass. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.68/254.16. Once again, Hoover lost in round one, when Kenny Bernstein's 5.58/261 beat his 5.73/252.88. He didn't race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. Hoover was back in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.76/254.38 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 5.99/233.34 advanced when Tom McEwen exploded a supercharger. In the second round, his 5.88/231.36 lost to McCulloch's 5.66/260. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lost to Oswald in the first round. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as it was postponed one week due to rain and run on May 31, the same day Tom was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Tom sold the car to Gary Page in England. Tom ran a confirmed 260.94 at Englishtown 87. Where was the 264 run? He went 5.87/234 at the AHRA Spokane Finals 8/87. Photo from Columbus 1987. | Update on "264 run" He ran that in his #1 Qualifying performance at Ennis during the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge on 8/1/87 with a 5.592 ET. - Rob McCabe

Notes: Tom finally got onto direct-drive bandwagon in '88, had a few wheelstands. Photo from Indy 1988. Confirmed 261.47 at Brainerd 1988. Where was the 264.70 run? | At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #9 with a 5.57. He beat low qualifier John Force in the first round, and Jim Head in round two before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Tom was at DeSoto Dragway in March for the IHRA Supernationals. In the first round his Firebird broke behind the line giving eventual winner Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird a solo into the semifinals. He made the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and lasted until round two where he got out of shape and shut off against Ed McCulloch. He also lasted until the second round at the IHRA Texas Nationals. There his 5.55/260.41 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.50/264. The next NHRA stop was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Hoover qualified #13 with a 5.77, but he lost to John Martin in round one. A week later (May 22), he was running at the IHRA Springnationals where he ran 5.76 in qualifying #5. In the first round, he only needed a 6.02/216.91 to advance when Richard Tharp, driving the "Blue Max," got out of shape and shut off. In the semifinals, Tom ran another 5.76 at 242.61, but lost to Oswald's 5.64/261. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May, and Hoover qualified for the show, but lost to Bruce Larson in the first round.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Hoover entered the '89 season with a new carbon fiber body on his McKinney chassis. He continued to run the AFT clutch that had served him so well in late '88. His 82 year old father, George, continued to serve as crew chief. Tom started the '89 season by qualifying #9 with a 5.42/268.73 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He faced low qualifier John Force in the first round, and beat him with a 5.39/260.11 to Force's 5.46/275. In the second round, be lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the next event, the Supernationals at Houston, he qualified #10 with a 5.43/264.23 and once again, met Force in the first round. Again, Hoover stepped up with a 5.36 beating John in the first round, for the second straight race. Unfortunately, just like at the first event, Hoover lost in round two. This time, he smoked the tires and shut off, giving Scott Kalitta an easy (7.60/150) victory. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #10 with a 5.45/264.16 getting the spot. He lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.49/244.75. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, but lost to Force in round two. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where a 5.36/264.78 qualified #5. He beat John Martin in the first round, but then smoked the tires in round two and lost to Bernstein. At the Cajun Nationals, he lost in the first round, after qualifying #11 with a 5.57/263.15. Things went much better at the Springnationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.44/252.66, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In that race, Don overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover hustled (?) to a 5.67/183 win. In the second round, he faced Mark Oswald. Mark broke after his burnout and Tom ran a 12.00-67 for the win. In the semifinals, Jim White smoked the tires and a 5.55/242 got Tom into the final. His luck ran out in the final when Larson's 5.42/275 dropped the Firebird's smoky 6.79/135.89. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.54/256.77 qualified #5, and he beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.57/251.18. In the second round, Bernstein's 5.47/270 beat Tom's 5.68/211.29. The ninth race on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Hoover ran a 5.38 to qualify #5, and he beat Etchells in the first round. In the second round, he got out of shape just off the line and lost to Prudhomme. His dad, George Hoover, showed that he could tune a car in the thin air of Denver for the next race, the Mile High Nationals. Tom ran a 5.76/248.61 in qualifying #8, even out qualifying Prudhomme. In the first round, be beat Gary Ritter, but in round two, he lost to Ed McCulloch. At the California Nationals, Tom qualified #10 with a 5.47/256.70. But once again, McCulloch got him, this time in the first round. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #10. This time Prudhomme beat him in round one. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Tom qualified #12 with a 5.66/261.55 and in the first round, he improved to a 5.54/265.48, but it wasn't enough to get around Prudhomme's 5.49/261. Hoover almost didn't make the field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He ran a best of 5.55/259.36 in qualifying and that just held for the "bump" spot. In all, he made four qualifying runs; the times were 5.72, 5.69, 5.55, and 5.58. In the first round, he improved to a 5.42/238.28 that beat Bernstein's tire smoking 7.80/111, but in the second round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off against Etchells. The following week (September 10), he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Tom qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 5.54/265.01, but in the first round, he blew a motor and lost to Johnny West. At Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, a 5.41/253.09 qualified #10. He fouled against Oswald in the first round.

Notes: Hoover started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.22/277.69 qualified #7. Both he and his opponent, Kenji Okazaki, smoked their tires hard in the opening round, and Hoover recovered first with an 8.45/150.72 over Kenji's 11.42. He again smoked the tires in round two and lost to Al Hofmann's 5.16/281. He qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.73, and he lost to low qualifier Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Tom ran much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where his 5.24/252.24 qualified #7. Wyatt Radke broke against him in the first round, and Tom ran 5.91/150 to advance. In the second round, his 6.07/160 lost to Hofmann's 5.18/285. Tom had another solid season with consistent runs, elimination wins, and an event victory at the Autolite Nationals. His best times of 5.146/291.35 came at the World Finals.

Notes: In Jan, Johnson was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.83/245.23. He was up against Paul Smith driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the first round. Rick went into some hard tire shake and shut off. He started his '85 NHRA season by qualifying #8 with a 5.84/250.69 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Rick beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.66/259.81, and in round two, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.58/263.62 that beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/235. He failed to back up the ET for a new national record. In the semifinals, his 5.92/249 lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 5.79/253. Atlanta held an eight-car show on March 10, and Johnson qualified #1 with a 5.79/251.39. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 5.71/256.41 over a tire-smoking Ed McCulloch. In the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires, and he lost to Smith's 6.36/220. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.72/255.82. But in round one, he fouled against Tom Hoover. Rick was back at Firebird on April 6 for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. A first-round 6.44/237.46 lost to John Force's 5.89/202, and in his second race, his 6.02/252.10 (Top Speed), lost to Gary Densham's 6.03/231. But he made the final when Force had a blower explode in his second race and could not run the final. So once again, Johnson lined up against Densham. Once again, Gary won; this time, his 5.98/238 got him the victory over Rick's 6.06/252.10 runner-up effort. He qualified #3 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.81/256.99 (Top Speed), but bad luck hit him in the first round, when he lost a blower belt against Ron Correnti. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he dominated the eight-car Funny Car program. Rick set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.72/254.33. A 5.76/252 beat Jim Dunn in round one, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim's son Mike with a 5.94/247 over the younger Dunn's 5.98/242. He took the victory with a 5.94/241.28 over Densham's 6.34/234 Daytona in the final. On May 11, he was at Firebird Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Force. Unfortunately, he lost two straight with times of 5.97/244.56 and 5.93/240.90 compared to John's 5.83/243 and 5.79/240. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.89/251.81. A first-round 6.01/245.09 beat Jody Smart, but in round two, his 6.03/242.58 lost to Force's 5.97/244. The "Hawaiian" made a rare IHRA appearance at Bristol for the Springnationals. Rick qualified #10, but he lost early. Next, he was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.81/251.25 qualified #4, but a quick-leaving John Collins beat Rick's 5.90/249.03 in the first round, with a 5.93/241. He then made the long tow to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals pay off by winning his first NHRA National event. He was running well, making laps of 5.76, 5.77, and 5.79 in qualifying, so it was apparent, he was tough. Rick's 5.76 at 254.38 was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. Round one saw his 5.91/251.25 beat Smith's 6.04/249 in the "Custom Body" car. A 5.87/248.20 took care of Billy Meyer in round two, and a semifinal 5.69/250.13 beat John Lombardo's 5.86/250 in the "Blue Max." In the final, he was up against Bernstein, and the two had a good race with Johnson's 5.72/260.26 (Top Speed and a new track record) getting the victory over Kenny's 5.79/250. Invented the lovely "cowcatcher" nose piece to answer Kenny Bernstein's 1985 long-nose Ford Tempo body. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1985. He was the quickest car in the sport for most of the 1985 season until Bernstein went 5.55 at Rockingham Fall. Ran 5.985/235.60 in runner-up effort at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway 8/85.
