Notes: First funny car in the fours. First member of the Castrol 4-Second Club for Funny Cars on October 1/1993, with a 4.987 at the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals in Topeka, Kan. Terrible & terrific year in 1993: crew chief Yingst died during NHRA Slick 50 Nats in Spring, rebounded to make historic pass in Fall. Photo from Columbus 1993. | Chuck started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.14/285.44, but in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Del Worsham. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, his 5.41/265.01 qualified #10. He improved to 5.22/272.39 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.15/287. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Slick 50 Nationals. Etchells qualified #5 with a 5.16/270.59 and in round one, his 5.14/286.35 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.46/275. In the second round, both he and Cruz Pedregon ran 5.22 (Chuck at 276.83), but Cruz crossed the finish line first. Gainesville was the next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, Chuck ran 5.30/277.86 to qualify #8. His 5.21/274.30 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.28/281 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, but he broke against Hofmann in round two. He went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational and qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.27/266.03. But in the first round, while faced Bonin, Chuck did his burnout and then was unable to back up after his reverser failed. After having such a rough time in the first few events, things went a little more his way at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.09 at 291.07. In the first round Caminito fouled against him and Etchells advanced with a 6.05/167.09. Round two saw Whit Bazemore fail to show and Chuck soloed to a 5.26/271.41. In the semifinals, he and his opponent, Freddie Neely smoked the tires with Chuck recovering first with a 5.49/265.95 over Freddie's 5.69/262. This put him into the final against Force. Unfortunately, John got the victory. The sixth NHRA race of the season was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Etchells qualified #4 for the show with a 5.29/277.60. An easy 5.66/207.75 in round one, beat Brent Fanning, but in round two he lost a close race to Bonin. Gordie's 5.26/285 nipped his 5.27/274.97. At the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown, Chuck qualified #2 with a 5.04/288.46 just behind Force's 5.01/289. Etchells beat Caminito in round one, with a 5.18/281.69 while in round two his 5.22/279.32 took out Kenji Okazaki. A semifinal 5.27/265.17 topped Tom Hoover's close 5.30/283 and moved him into the final against Force. Once again, John stopped him in the final. Force won with a 5.14/290 while Etchells was busy smoking his tires to an 8.01/104.69 for the runner-up spot. On May 28 these two faced off in a best of three match race at the 1/8 mile Lancaster track. Things didn't go well for Etchells as he lost two straight with times of 4.13/170 and 3.92/178 while Force ran a best of 3.73. Repeated his 299.50 from Topeka at when he set Top Speed at Ennis Fall 1993.

Notes: In January, John started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His track record 5.34 at 266.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He then made his way to the final by running 5.40/268.85 over Johnny West's 5.93/243 in the "Hawaiian" and 5.41/267.85 in the semi-final when Kenny Bernstein broke. In the final, he faced second qualifier Ed McCulloch, and his 5.47/267.06 got him his first victory of the season. The following week (February 7), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.44/274.13 qualified #5. He best West's 5.98/234 in the opening round with a 5.49/267.22. In round two, he improved to 5.42/272.64 to stop Bruce Larson's 5.58/259. But in the semi-finals, he smoked the tires to a 6.40/168.25 in a loss to eventual winner Dale Pulde who won with a 5.42/269. Shortly after that, he was at Baylands Raceway for its East/West drags. Four FCs were competing in a roundabout race. Force first ran 5.74/241.93 to beat Pulde's wheelstanding 10.84/77. He then ran 5.61/252.80 over West's 5.64/245. These two would come back for the final, and Force won with a track record 5.51 at 248.61 over West's 5.82/221. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified second to Tripp Shumake. A 5.40 (Low ET) at 268.85 advanced in round one when Scott Kalitta broke. Bernstein shut down just after leaving the line against him in the semi-final, and John won with a 5.45/267.06. He faced Shumake in the final, and he fouled. His 5.98/249.30 lost to Tripp's 11.10-96. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. In the future, Force would often win there. But back in '88, he was still getting his feet wet. He ran 5.40/265.64 and 5.36/270.02 in qualifying. The 5.36 gave him the pole. In the first round, the transmission failed, and he lost to Tom Hoover's 7.66/118. The rain-delayed IHRA Supernationals was run at DeSoto at the end of March. In the first round, his 5.64 beat Shumake's 5.69, but the car broke against Kalitta in the semi-final. He had qualified second at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Texas Nationals with a 5.32/279.50, but the race was rained out, and he could not return as IHRA ran it the same day as the Bakersfield March Meet. This race was now run in mid-April, and Force set both Top Speed and Low ET during qualifying at 5.57/259.36. But it didn't stick around long in eliminations, as in the first round, his rear slick came off, and he had to watch as Jim Adolph soloed into the semi-final with a 6.58/171. He also qualified #2 at Atlanta, where his 5.54/260.11 followed McCulloch's 5.53/269 at the NHRA Southern Nationals. After an easy first-round win, he got another in round two when Jim Head smoked the tires against him and shut down. Force advanced with a 5.58/264. He then ran 5.60/263 to defeat Bernstein's 5.72 in the semi-final. He faced McCulloch in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Ed's track record 5.52/266 win over John's 5.60/265.17. The team was having a rough time during qualifying at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.60 was followed by a tire-smoking, shut off 22.84. He then ran 5.55/263.69 and came back out and smoked the tires again. Still, the 5.55 qualified #1. But he was upset in the first round, where Chuck Etchells' 5.65/254 put his 5.78/254.23 on the trailer. After this race, Force was sitting in fifth place in NHRA points. Photo from Columbus 1988.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | John Force started his '89 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #2 with a 5.37, but failed to reach the finals. John set Low ET while qualifying #1 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.32/277.26. He lost in round one, with a 5.46/275.22 that finished second best to Tom Hoover's 5.39/260. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, his 5.26/277.52 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's strong 5.19/265. Once again, he lost to Hoover in the first round. Gainesville was NHRA's next stop for the Gatornationals. Force qualified #4 with a 5.36/276.92. This time, Chuck Etchells stopped him in the first round. He finally got past round one at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #10 with a 5.57/255.75. He beat Art Hendey in the first round, and in round two a 5.48/273.14 beat Hoover. His semifinal 5.55/268.01 lost to upstart Eric Reed's 5.51/259. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, he broke in round two and lost to Mark Oswald. He ran well, qualifying #8 with a 5.42/274.72 and improved to a 5.41 first-round win over Paul Smith. Oswald got him again at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals, where Mark stopped John's tire smoking car in the first round. Force qualified #10 with a 5.57/267.61. By the seventh race of the NHRA season, the Springnationals, John was hoping his luck would turn around. It didn't. A 5.37/273.05 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to alternate Jim White. He was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 25. A 5.55/268.17 qualified #6 in the field. He beat Etchells in the first round, with a 6.06/177.97. But in round two, Oswald's 5.60/256 beat his 5.63/263.00. He qualified #7 with a 5.39/276.15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, but a 5.54 in round two lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.36. The next NHRA event was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Crew chief Austin Coil tuned the car to a 5.70/250.00 in the thin air to qualify #7 in the show. John beat Richard Hartman in the first round, but in round two his 5.70 lost to Oswald's 5.64. On July 30, John was running at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.45/274.22 qualified #7 in the field and he improved to 5.42/273.72 to beat Jim Murphy in the first round. In round two, his 5.51/272.97 beat Tony McCallum's 5.57/258. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, he ran into a hard running Prudhomme who strapped a 5.35/268 on John's 5.50/271.65.

Notes: After driving the In-N-Out car at Pomona, Tim was still waiting for his new car to be completed, so he drove the "Custom Body" car at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.83/247.93, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.116/219.61 lost to John Lombardo's 5.77/251 in the "Blue Max." That was Tim's only event in the car. Notes: Tim debuted his new Firebird in April at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate for the show with a best of 6.108/234.98. He did much better at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, qualifying #5 with a 5.873/230.65. A first-round 5.970/240.51 lost to Jim Head's 5.94/245. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Grose failed to qualify, with his 5.99/224 being the first alternate. Yet at the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.821/230.17. He slowed to 5.979/222.88 in a first-round loss to Dale Pulde. The following week (June 23), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Tim beat Bruce Larson in the first round with a 5.82/241.98, but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 5.87/241.93 against Kenny Bernstein's 5.78/243. The NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 fuel Funny Cars showed, so you didn't have to run hard to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Tim ran a strong 5.716/248.48 to qualify #3. In the first round, he faced Bernstein, and both cars ran 5.84 (5.843/244 to Tim's 5.847/243.63), but Kenny got the win light. His next stop was Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He only qualified #10, but he beat Mark Oswald in the first round and worked his way into the final against Pulde. A good 5.85/233.16 finished runner-up to Dale's 5.78/252. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.669 at 242.06 to qualify #2 behind Bernstein's 5.62. A first-round 5.776/239.10 beat Billy Meyer, and in round two, his 5.825/240.00 took out John Collins. Grose slowed to 5.900/247.38 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." He was up against Bernstein in the final. It was a good, close race, but Kenny's 5.77/249 got the victory over Tim's 5.805/250.13. Tim qualified #10 at Bandimere at 6.056/225.00. In round one, he lost to Bernstein, 5.79/245 to 5.957/237.46. He qualified #13 at Brainerd at 5.927/240.64. In round one, he beat Billy Meyer, 6.008/239.36 to 6.48/239, but lost to John Collins in round two, 5.87/246 to 5.905/246.57. Tim qualified #10 at Indy at 5.754/258.17. Nemesis Bernstein got him in round one, again, 5.70/255 to 5.954/255.24. Tim broke through at Maple Grove, winning the inaugural NHRA Keystones. He qualified #8 at 5.745/234.78. In round one, he beat Bobby Lagana, 5.751/230.71 to 6.71/173. He beat Rick Johson in round two, 5.739/237.46 to 5.91/241. In round three, he beat Dale Pulde, 5.802/244.83, to a 13-second shut-off. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein. Tim finally broke the curse, driving around a Bernstein holeshot to take a 5.821/237.96 to 5.887/234.74 win. Tim qualified #14 at Phoenix at 6.012/227.27. In round one, he lost a close one to Al Segrni, 6.00/244 to 6.036/248.28. At the World Finals, Tim qualified #13 at 5.857/248.34. In round one, he upset Dale Pulde, 5.849/243.11 to 5.88/250. Tim did not show up for his second-round race against Kenny Bernstein. His best times were the 5.669 at Englishtown and 258.17 at Indy.

Notes: Tim won NHRA Winters with a 5.618/250.69 bests (Tim's best NHRA national event ET for the year). He ran a controversial first 5.40 run at NED one week after Gainesville. Roland Leong witnessed it and said it was a monster. Tim won a $50,000 payday at IHRA Bristol. Tim also tried a combo with header pipes exiting the top hood area directly in front of body A posts at the outside edges of the windshield. Benefit: All kinds of downforce. Problem: Absolutely blinded by header flames when at all dark outside! Photo from Indy 1986. Ran the same paint scheme with Skoal Bandit, Dan Young Chevy, and blank side panels in '86. | After winning the NHRA Winternationals with his Firebird, Tim showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with his new Corvette. He qualified #13 with a 5.95/235.97. In the first round, a 5.97/209.59 lost to John Force's 5.81/247. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.80/246.30. A 5.83/246.03 beat Steve Hodkinson's 5.98/240 in the first round, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.98/83.28 that lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/244 in the "Blue Max" Mustang. Grose qualified well again at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 5.90/236.28 was #7 in the field. A first-round 5.89/231.77 beat Gary Phillips, but another 5.89 at 239.87 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 5.78/249. Tim got another big win at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 and, in the final, met Kenny Bernstein. The "Budweiser King" blew an engine, and Tim ran 5.87/231 for the victory. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.91/245.49. Unfortunately, he lost to Bernstein in the first round. Grose competed at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove. It was an eight-car field, and Tim's 6.05/219.51 qualified #7. He hurt some parts on the run and could not run in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals at the end of June. A 6.09/226.13 qualified #10, and a 6.00/234.98 lost to Force's 5.80/252 in the first round. A week later (July 6), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #4. He beat Scott Kalitta's out-of-shape Mustang in the first round with a 5.94/239.36. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Bernstein. He barely made the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, with his 5.90/243.37 holding down the #15 spot. He beat Brad Tuttle in the first round before losing to Force's 5.74 in round two. A couple of weeks later (July 27), he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.06/229.00 but lost to Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian" in the opening round. Not sure why he raced his old Firebird at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, but he did well with it there, reaching the semifinals before losing to Bernstein. He was back driving the Corvette when he won the US Funny Car Championships a week later. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.88/241.93, and Tim's final round 5.83/238.76 beat low qualifier Jim Head for the title. Grose's next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.87/250.69, and in round one, his 6.04/237.46 beat Norm Day's on-fire 6.06/238. He went to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, but unfortunately, his 5.92/251.32 best was good for the second alternate. He then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 5.82/232.01 qualified #8. In the opening round, his 5.93/220.15 beat Kalitta's 6.07/221, and in round two, he put Paul Smith on the trailer with a 5.97/228.07. But eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.68/257 in the "Candies and Hughes" car stopped his 6.16/199.91 from advancing in the semifinals. Tim then went to the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals. His 5.74/241.22 qualified #11. He ran 5.73/238.15 in the opening round to defeat Raymond Beadle's 5.79/250 in the "Blue Max." In round two, he fouled and shut off against Oswald. The 251.32 was Tim's best NHRA speed; he typically did not run high MPH numbers.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Did Tim run 260 mph somewhere in 1987? Tim was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot for the sixteen-car field with a 5.77/240.19. In the first round, he advanced when his opponent, Doc Halladay, got out of shape and crossed the centerline. But in round two, Grose's Firebird broke and Graeme Cowin soloed into the semifinals.

Notes: Tim was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.51/258.39. In the first round, both he and Dominic Santucci smoked the tires, but Tim's 7.05/160.19 came out on top. A 5.78/237.57 lost to eventual winner Tony McCallum's 5.71/253. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.71/212.36 best. In early July, he qualified #6 at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan, but he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Doc Halladay. Grose qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he lost to John Force in the first round. He competed at the Wolverine Nationals at US 131 Martin, Michigan, on August 13, but he smoked the tires in the first race and lost to Johnny West. The race was run "Chicago Style," meaning the cars would each run two rounds, with the two Low ET cars running in the final. On Tim's second run, he beat Tom Hoover's 6.01/209 with a 5.96/203.83. Tim's 5.96 best failed to make the final round match-up. A week later (August 20), he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" of the sixteen-car field with a 6.04/248.89. He improved to a 5.84/205.24 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get around Scott Kalitta's 5.50/272. Unfortunately, at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, his best of 5.57/257.36 failed to qualify for the show. He also attempted to qualify at the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but his 5.75/252.10 failed to get into the field. Tim's bad luck held over into IHRA events when his 5.78/241.30 (second alternate) failed to make the field at Bristol for the Fallnationals. At the NHRA season-ending World Finals at Pomona, he was the third alternate with a 5.60/248.96. The best NHRA times were a 5.578/257.36 first alternate DNQ at Indy. Did Tim really run 5.47/268 this year (ET at Epping again or is this an error referring to his 1986 run)? Removing those times until we get confirmation.

Notes: Halladay was at Cordova for its World Series of Drag Racing event in August. The race was a two-day affair, and he wasn't there on Friday. He showed up on Saturday. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. His 7.07/223.93 beat a wheelstanding "Jungle Jim" Liberman in his first race. In the second race, he ran 6.71/231.69 over a troubled Bob Pickett in the M/T Grand Am. His ETs were not good enough to advance into the final. Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1986. Doc qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.65/255.31. Unfortunately, he got out of shape against Tim Grose in the first round and crossed the centerline. Halladay qualified well at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but he lost in round one. He raised some eyebrows at Gainesville, where he laid down a 5.649/254.59 to qualify #5 for the NHRA Gatornationals. To put that into perspective, he qualified ahead of names such as Don Prudhomme, Billy Meyer, Tom McEwen, and John Force. He beat John Martin in the opening round with a 5.81/223.93, but in round two, he slipped to a 5.95/241.28 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.59/263. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.83/245.76. He faced Ed McCulloch in the first round, and Ed smoked the tires. It looked as though Halladay would win easily, but then he broke and blower belt. Ed's 6.01/252 came past to win over Doc's 6.17/186.37. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.01/240.64 beat Steve Hodkinson. He lost to eventual winner Bernstein in the semifinals. Tulsa held its yearly independent Spring race, and Doc qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 5.89 (Low ET) at 241.28. Once again, he beat Hodkinson in the opening round, this time with a 6.22/200.89. But in the semifinals, Darrell Amberson stepped up to run a career-best 5.93/245 to beat Halladay's 6.14/238.09. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 for the eight-car field and defeated Amberson in round one. He lost in the semifinal to eventual winner Mike Dunn who was driving Joe Pisano's car. He won the Union Grove Olympics of Drag Racing event, stopping Mike Edstrom in the final. Doc earlier had set Low ET with a 5.79. It was then off to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Doc had qualified for every IHRA race of the season, and his 5.66 easily made the show. He then beat Pat Walsh with a 5.74/252.10 in the first round before smoking the tires in the semifinal and losing to Mark Oswald. He moved up to second in the IHRA Funny Car points chase behind Oswald with the semifinal finish. He competed at Brainerd for the Crown FC Championships, and while he failed to reach the final, he did run some good times, such as 5.90/251.39 in beating McEwen.
