Notes: After a DNQ at NHRA Gainesville (times unavailable), Mark was at Indianapolis on June 4 for the NHRA Division Three race. Only seven cars showed, and his 6.46 qualified last. Bobby Hilton broke against him in the first round, and Mark soloed with a 6.15/221.67. In the semifinal, a 6.18/218.97 defeated Bill Pryor's 6.28/233. He faced Jeg Coughlin in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Coughlin's 6.09/232.55 beat Howick's 6.11/227.27. Shortly after that (June 11), he went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 6.24/223.88 failed to qualify. The following week, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 7.99 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He upset Lee Weller's 6.43 in the opening round with a 6.37, but the car failed to fire for its race against Johnny Abbott in round two. Surprisingly, he could not qualify for the next NHRA Division Three race at Martin, Michigan. The "bump" was only 6.42. But he got into the show when Paul Longenecker broke. He didn't hang around long, as in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.56 lost to Coughlin's 6.24. Mark qualified #19 at Indy at 6.140/234.37. He ran 6.388/221.67 in a round one loss to Richard Tharp. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1978. |

Notes: Dale qualified #13 with a 6.21/230.76 at the NHRA Gatornationals but lost on a holeshot by Richard Tharp in the first round, when his 6.29/229 fell to Tharp's 6.31/242. He ran well at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Traction was a problem there, and Thierer's 6.60/190 qualified #3. A first-round 6.38/220 beat Bob Hilton and a 6.47/211 advanced into the finals when Paul Longenecker broke. He ran a 6.81/177 in the final to finish runner-up to Clayton Harris' 6.27/234. In April, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.22/233 qualified #3, but an off-pace 6.93/220 lost to Mike Palmer's 6.84/217 in the first round. The team ended up as the first alternate at Englishtown at 6.22 (no speed reported). Dale was the second alternate at the Sanair Grandnational with a 6.08. He then ran the same number to qualify #13 at Indy at 6.08/233.16. He ran 6.232/227.84 in a narrow first-round loss to John Abbott's 6.215/225. |

Notes: 5.05 at Winters was half of the quickest side-by-side race (LaHaie 5.091). Photo from Columbus 1989. Ran 5.13 on the 291.54. | Connie found some speed going into the '89 season. It came from one of Sid Waterman's new gear-driven fuel pumps. After Connie had made two qualifying passes at Pomona for the Winternationals at 286 and 288, Sid asked him to try one of his larger fuel pumps. Kalitta installed the pump, and with no other changes, he went out and qualified #3 with a 5.06/291.54 (Top Speed and a track record). He beat Dick LaHaie's 5.09/277 in the first round, with a 5.05/288.64. Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Hawley in the second round. He again qualified #3 at the next NHRA event, the Supernationals at Houston, where he ran a 5.02 for the spot. He lasted until the second round, where he smoked the tires and lost to Hawley. He set Top Speed at the Gatornationals when he qualified #4 with a 5.12/286.98. Kalitta broke in the first round, against Shirley Muldowney. He didn't qualify that well at the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, running a 5.25/274.22 for the #12 spot. He lost to Gary Ormsby in the first round. He lost to Dick LaHaie in the first round, at the next race, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #14 with a 5.18/283.82. Conrad qualified in the top half of the field at the Cajun Nationals when he ran a 5.21/279.24 to qualify #7. He beat Jack Ostrander in the first round, but in round two, he first smoked the tires and then tried to get back on it and went into a wheelstand before finally shutting off and losing to Gene Snow. He sidestepped the NHRA schedule for running the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, and while he failed to make the finals, Kalitta set Top Speed of the meet at 271.05. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.10/281.77 but lost to Hank Endres in the first round. Connie traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he qualified #14 with a 5.37/271.98. A first-round 5.45/270.43 lost to Dennis Forcelle's 5.27/268. He had a bad outing at Englishtown for the Summernationals. His best of 5.33/280.72 failed to qualify, only being good enough for the second alternate. At the tenth race of the season, the Mile High Nationals in Denver, Connie made the show with a 5.44/261.32 (#11). He lost to Ormsby in the first round. He picked it up at the California Nationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.10/284.99. But once again, he lost early when he smoked the tires against Mike Brotherton in the first round. Connie qualified #5 again at the next meet, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. A 5.06/281.25 gave him the spot. But it was a repeat of the last event when he smoked the tires and lost to Brotherton in the first round, again. Kalitta finally made a few rounds at the Northstar Nationals. He used a 5.26/280.11 to qualify #10. He was fortunate in the first round, when Ormsby crashed into the guardrail and his 5.19/281.25 advanced. In the second round, he nipped Lori John's 5.27/264 with a 5.26/278.37. In the semifinals, he met Muldowney, and both ran 5.25 at 277, with Shirley picking up the win. After that good run, it was hoped that it would continue at the US Nationals. It didn't. A 5.12/282.66 qualified #15, and he lost to Eddie Hill in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. Kalitta qualified #11 with a 5.08/277.77. He fouled against Ormsby with a 5.09/263.77 in the first round. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1988. Qualified on the bump at Indy at 5.272. | Frank started the '88 season by debuting a new car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.24 and beat Earl Whiting in the first round, before losing to Dick LaHaie in round two. At the Gatornationals, Bradley qualified #3 with a 5.16 at an NHRA National record of 286.71. A first-round 5.17/284.99 beat Richard Holcomb, and in round two, a 5.24/275 beat Bill Mullins. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a 6.54 loss to eventual winner Eddie Hill's 5.06/279. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he lasted until round two, where his 5.35/271 lost to Hill's 5.21/277. The NHRA tour's next stop was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Frank qualified #5 with a 5.29, and in the first round, he beat Jack Ostrander. In round two, an off-pace 5.48 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.26. Baton Rouge was NHRA's fifth race on the schedule. Frank ran well, beating Mullins in round two with a 5.25/276, but losing to Joe Amato's 5.19 in the semifinal with a 5.26. |

Notes: Holcomb did not race at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Darlington in mid-March for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.45/260.86 beat Jack Ostrander. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semi-final and lost to Joe Amato. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.29/276.07 qualified #11. He lost to Frank Bradley in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at DeSoto Dragway for the IHRA Supernationals. Holcomb's 5.43 in the first round beat Earl Whiting but his 5.46/252 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Darrell Gwynn's 5.25/262. Richard was the third car in the four-second zone with a 4.998 at Dallas on October 15, 1988 (third entry in the Cragar 4 Second Club for Top Fuel). The car had a rear end SO narrow that the wing struts had to be mounted around the engine. It was an aerodynamics trick to move the HUGE rear slicks out of the wind. Best NHRA times of 5.155 at Houston Fall 1988 and 276.07 at Gainesville 3/88. Photo from Columbus 1988. | On 10/15/88, we put Richard into the 3rd slot in the Cragar 4 second club. Notes: Connie started the 1988 season very slowly but found the combination at the final few NHRA national events. He started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #7. In the opening round, he lost to Gary Ormsby. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the fourth alternate at 5.54/254.38. He also attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was the second alternate at 5.46/266.74. The IHRA Texas Nationals was rained out. The day before the race was run, the teams were allowed a test and tune run. Kalitta ran a career-best (to this point) 5.22. He had actually qualified #10 in the field with a 5.29/263.34. However, his 5.32/258 in the opening round fell to Gene Snow's 5.20/274. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, his 5.40/260.94 qualified #11. Once again, he lost in round one, where he shut down to 14.56/49.41, losing to Mike Brotherton's 5.82/249. Shortly after that (May 22), Kalitta was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #5 and couldn't shake the first-round blues as his 5.53/249.44 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.40/269. The following week (May 29, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Kalitta's 5.33/273.80 qualified #8. But as was the case later, an off-pace 5.73/203.16 in the first round lost to Bill Mullins' 5.62/242. | 4/09/1988 - Connie Kalitta wins the inaugural Winston Invitational, 5.19 seconds at 276.0 mph. His 5.09 at the Supernationals was half the quickest side-by-side pass (Amato 5.071). He ran his best times of the season there in qualifying #4 at 5.06/283.01. He also ran 5.080 at the World Finals. Notes: Frank had one of his better seasons in '89. He had been one of the first to run a 300-inch wheelbase car back at the beginning of '88, and he retained the Uyehara-built car for '89. The only difference was that he planned on elevating the JP-1 engine slightly. He may not have won many races, but he qualified strong everywhere he raced. It showed in the points standings when he finished the year seventh overall in NHRA. He started the year by qualifying in the dreaded #9 spot at the Winternationals with a 5.15/277.52. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Joe Amato. Frank didn't let it bother him as he beat Joe with a 5.14/277.00. In the second round, he beat Darrell Gwynn, and in the semifinals, a 5.18/275.73 beat Frank Hawley. In the final, he met Gary Ormsby, and Frank fell off to a 5.28/260 that lost to Gary's strong 5.06/278. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #3, but a first-round 5.19 lost to Jim Head's 5.18. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals. A 5.20/274.47 qualified #9. A first-round 5.23/277.00 lost to low qualifier Dick LaHaie's 5.15/282. At the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, Frank used a 5.07/285.63 to qualify #5. He beat Rudy Toepke in the first round, before losing to Ormsby's 5.06/286 in the second round with a 5.10. Race six of the year was the Cajun Nationals. A 5.17/278.20 qualified #5. In the first round, he beat Richard Holcomb, but in round two, he was caught napping by LaHaie, and Dick's 5.22 beat Frank's 5.19. The next race was the Springnationals at National Trail. Once again, Bradley qualified strong running a 5.06/284.18 for the #3 spot. He was upset in the first round, by Lori Johns. Frank got his first pole of the season at the Grandnationals, where a 5.12/282.39 (Top Speed) gave him the spot. In the first round, he beat Gene Snow with a 5.17/280.89. In round two, he lost to LaHaie's 5.13/282 with a 5.17/279.93. He took his second pole of the season at the next race, the Summernationals. This time, a 5.07/285.08 gave him the position. Unfortunately, Ormsby qualified poorly, and the two met in the first round, with Gary getting the win. Frank didn't run so well in the thin air of Denver for the Mile High Nationals. A 5.73/211.31 just made the bump. He lost to Darrell Gwynn in the first round. He went from last to first in qualifying when the tour hit Sonoma for the California Nationals. A 5.04/286.80 gave him his third pole. He got one back from Gwynn when he beat him in the first round, with a 5.06/285.08 to Darrell's 5.16/281. A 5.08/280.46 beat a tire-smoking Mike Brotherton in the second round. In the semifinal, a 5.10/282.04 beat Gordie Bonin. He beat Joe Amato in the final for his only win of the year. He came close to scoring another pole at the next event, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle, but his 5.05/284.36 just missed Amato's 5.03 for the #1 spot. Frank beat Johns' 5.15/274 in the first round, with a 5.12/284.72. But a 5.19/278.72 lost to LaHaie's 5.10/282 in the second round. At the Northstar Nationals, a 5.22/273.72 qualified Bradley #7. Both he and Amato ran 5.14's in the first round, with Joe getting there first. The next race was the US Nationals at Indy. Bradley qualified #10 with a 5.14 but lost to Eddie Hill in the first round. It was then on to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. A 5.20/274.13 qualified #12. In the first round, he ran a career-best (to this point) 5.02 at 281.60 over a broken Dennis Forcelle. He lasted until the second round, where his 5.08/271 lost to Hill's 5.02/285. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Auto Parts Nationals, Bradley qualified #9. A first-round 5.012/286.53 lost to low qualifier Ormsby's 4.92/294. Frank became the tenth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club on October 25, 1989, at Pomona, Calif. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: The best NHRA qualified times were 5.202/273.63 at Gainesville. Confirmed 277.34 at IHRA Ennis 1988, but need to ensure it was in this car and not in the California Rattler machine (the times were probably in the Gunite car). This photo from Columbus 1988. Rick Howard has the same photo, DNQ, with a best of 5.89/229.94 at Columbus. A rare visit east for Ray. Did well at the 1988 Summers, too. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Indy 1991 – Cory’s rookie season in Top Fuel. | After winning four times in NHRA national events in Top Alcohol Dragster, Cory McClenathan made his Top Fuel debut at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10, but in the first round, he broke against Eddie Hill. He also qualified at the NHRA Arizona Nationals where he lasted until round two, where his off-pace 5.34 lost to Craig Smith. A 5.09 qualified #11 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals and in the opening round, he beat Don Prudhomme, but in round two, his 5.07/259.96 lost to Jim Head's 4.99/273. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Cory qualified #13 and in the opening round, he and Lori Johns had a close race that saw both drivers run 5.11 (Cory at 274.22), but Lori got the win light. His next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational event. This was only an eight-car show and he qualified on the "bump" with a 5.12/275.90. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Dick LaHaie. Things went much better at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He only qualified #12 with a 5.05/281.42, but in round one, he stopped Gary Ormsby with a 5.04. A quick-leaving 5.03/280 in round two beat Eddie Hill's quicker 5.00/277. But in the semifinals, Gene Snow got off the line first against him, and Snow's 5.10 beat McClenathan's 5.08. Still, it was his first trip into the semifinals. After such a great outing, Memphis was a disaster. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Cory had a rear tire blow out at speed during qualifying. The damage was severe, as the chassis was cracked and the team was sidelined until the Mile High Nationals. It was quite a blow as Cory qualified for every race leading up to Memphis. Even with the blow out, he had run 5.27/265.40 and would have been the first alternate for the show. After missing three races, the team showed up at Denver with a brand new car. Cory qualified #9 with a 5.29/266.66, but a 5.34/264.08 lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.26/256 in round one. Eventually ran best NHRA national event times of 4.949 at Topeka Fall and 289.66 at the World Finals at Pomona. |
