Notes: Iron block. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1980. Also 5.95 at NHRA Cajuns, 5.92/233.76 at NHRA Englishtown, 5.91 at NHRA Indianapolis. | Allen started the '80 season with a runner-up finish to Frank Bradley at the AHRA Winternationals. He then went to Pomona, where a 5.99/245.90 qualified #12 for the NHRA Winternationals. He lost to upstart John Kimble's 5.96/241 in the first round, with a 6.19/233.16. Jeb ran OK at the Bakersfield March Meet, beating Doug Kerhulas in the first round, with a 6.19 but losing soon after that. He took his first win of the year at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.87. He beat Dick LaHaie in the first round, and in round two, he beat Frank Bradley. In the semifinals, he beat Don Garlits' off pace 7.36 with a 5.84/239.36 to make the final. In the final, he met low qualifier and track record-setter (5.71), Gary Beck. Jeb stepped up to a 5.80/247.25 to beat Beck's 5.92/236. Allen went to Darlington for IHRA's version of the Winternationals and qualified #2 with a 6.11. In the first round, he lost a close race when Richard Tharp's 6.02/243 beat his 6.03/238.72. He won the IHRA Dixie Nationals, stopping Bob Hilton in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car in the final. On April 27, he qualified #1 with a track record 5.91 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He beat Steve Stephens in the first round, with a 5.95/240, and in the semifinal, another 5.95 at 239 advanced to the finals when Jeg Coughlin broke. Once again, he met Beck in the final, but Gary reversed their finishing order from the Gatornationals. Beck's 5.93/239 took the victory. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4, Jeb qualified #3 with a 6.13/223.88. He beat Charlie Greer's 6.49/213 in the first round, with a 6.01/231.36. In the semifinals, a 5.99/238.09 beat Bob Simmons' 6.51. He took the win in the final with a 6.01/238.09 over a tire-smoking Kerry Sweigert. The next Division 1 race was taken by Allen as well. He did have to survive a close 6.09/240.64 (Low ET and Top Speed) first-round race against Richard Tharp's 6.11/234, but in the final, he beat Dick LaHaie for another victory. He then went to Rockingham and set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.90/245 while winning the IHRA Pro-Am Championships over Mark Oswald. The IHRA Springnationals were postponed by rain and were run on May 25 instead of May 18. Jeb qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.02. He stepped up in the first round, against low qualifier Tharp, but his 5.95/242 still finished second to Richard's 5.91/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. At the NHRA Springnationals, Allen qualified #4 with a 5.96/234.98. But in the first round, he shut off on the line with no pressure. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Jeb qualified #6 in the eight-car show, and he singled in the first round, when Bob Noice left the line before the 'tree was actuated. In the semifinals, he lost to Beck's 6.00/232 with a 6.18/214.28. He always ran well at Englishtown, and in '80, it was no different. A 5.87/246.57 qualified #2, and he worked his way to the final by beating Jody Smart in round one, with a 5.90/236.84 to Smart's 5.97/241. He got lucky in round two when he lost a rear end but still won when Larry Brown lost an engine. After changing the rear, he returned in the semifinals and ran 5.92 to beat Marvin Graham's 6.02. In the final, he faced Dick LaHaie. The final was a good one, but Dick got his first NHRA national event win with a 5.95/235 over Jeb's 6.04/238.72 runner-up bid.

Notes: Jeb's 5.628 at Gainesville was not backed up but was the first time someone had gone quicker than Don Garlits' 5.637 from Ontario 1975. Received a 254.01 mph national record at Bandimere because NHRA was still factoring times for the mile-high race plant. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981. Jeb's 250.69 at Gainesville was the 7th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Jeb won the 1981 NHRA Championship by 31 points over Gary Beck. | Jeb was the only driver that qualified for every NHRA national event in '81. He had switched to a 10-71 supercharger with a larger fuel pump and a hotter magneto for the season. His season started at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing, where he won Top Fuel with a 5.86. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.86/246.57. A 5.87/245 beat Tony Ceraolo in round one, and he followed that up with a 5.84/245 single in the second round when Mike Tarter was unable to run. He was winning rounds but was burning pistons on almost every run. Allen stated that with his new engine set-up, the air/fuel mixture wasn't right. In the semifinals, his 5.86 beat Dave Settles' 5.94, and he grabbed the win with a final round 5.92/229.59 that beat Marvin Graham's 6.01/236. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #6, running 5.98/241.28 for the spot. Unfortunately, rain delayed the race one week, and Allen could not run the rain date as it fell on the same date as the NHRA Gatornationals (March 15). Jeb made quite a splash at Gainesville as he ran a 5.62/250.69 to qualify first. The 5.62 was the first time anyone had gone quicker than Don Garlits' historic 5.63 from '75. He failed to back up the time for a new NHRA record as in the first round, his 5.80/248.61 lost to Frank Bradley's 5.79/243. The following week he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals but rain-interrupted again, and the race was postponed one week until March 28. He qualified #3 with a 5.97/242 and a first-round 6.04/231 beat alternate Paul Romine's 6.20/223. In the semifinals, he fell off to a 6.39/209 that lost to Jody Smart's 6.05/243. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Atlanta. It was a tough show to make as it was only an eight-car field. Jeb ran 5.86/236.84 to qualify #6. He beat Graham in the first round, with a 5.92/236.84, but a 6.00/241 in the semifinals lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.97/236. It was then off to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Allen qualified #3 with a 5.83 and a first-round 5.85/249.30 (Top Speed of the meet) beat Connie Kalitta. In the semifinals, he ran a good 5.89, but he finished behind Graham's even better 5.82. Another big win came at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.86/252.10 (Top Speed). His 6.00/247.93 beat Mike Tarter in the first round, while a 5.92 in the semifinals beat Mark Oswald. In the final, he ran Richard Tharp in the "Candies & Hughes" car. Tharp smoked the tires, and Allen ran 5.99/248.61 for the victory. A week later (May 24), he was back in the winner's circle at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Dragway. There he qualified #2 with a 5.87 and a first-round 5.99 beat a tire-smoking Graham. Tharp also smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and Jeb's 6.02/243.90 advanced into the final. There he ran Terry Capp, and both had traction issues with Allen's 6.11/233.16 coming out on top over Capp's 7.15. Things didn't go as well at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.93/243.90 in qualifying placed him #7 in the field, but in the first round, his car broke, giving Jim Head an easy run into the second round. After that, it was off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.93 at a track record speed of 244.56. A first-round 5.95/242.58 beat Capp, while in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.92 at 243.24 to beat Johnny Abbott's 5.96/238. He faced David Pace driving the "Carroll Brothers" car in the final, and a 5.94/243.24 got Jeb another victory.

It started at the Winternationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.04/280.81. He lost to Frank Bradley in the first round. The Supernationals at Houston was the next race and once again Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 4.99. He beat Dick LaHaie in the first round, with a 5.11 and a 5.09/281 beat Jim Head in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Frank Hawley with a 5.04/285 to go into the final against Ormsby. In the final, Amato took a nap at the line and lost to Gary's 5.09/278 with a quicker 5.03/288.63. Gainesville hosted the Gatornationals on March 19 and for the third straight event, Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 (5.05). Unfortunately for Amato, a 5.15 by Dennis Forcelle beat his 5.17 in the first round. He was father down the qualifying sheet in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.20/275.81 gave him the #8 spot in the field. He picked it up to a 5.15/270.51 in the first round, to beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.28/261. But in round two he fell to Ormsby. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, a 5.06/278.12 qualified #4. In the first round against Eddie Hill, he smoked the tires and lost. At the sixth race of the season, the Cajun Nationals, he qualified well with a 5.15/277.77 for the #3 spot, but he again lost in the first round, this time to Gene Snow. He broke through for his first win of '89 at the Springnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.10/278.98. Joe beat pat Dakin, Lori Johns (with a 5.08/284), and Ormsby in the semifinals to set up a final round match-up with Hank Endres. In that final round race, Endres tried hard with a 5.22/266, but it was Amato's day and he won with a 5.12/280.72. The NHRA tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.17/272.31. In the first round, he dispatched Head's 5.32/267 with a 5.22/275.48. He beat Hill in round two with a 5.28/272.56 to Eddie's close 5.29/272. In the semifinal, Joe ran a 5.25/268.65 that lost to LaHaie's 5.14/279. Race number nine of the season was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.08/286.18 qualified #2, but he took a first-round loss by Forcelle. Things went more his way at the Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.22/268.57. He beat Muldowney in the first round, and in round two, a 5.28/264 beat Forcelle's 5.41. In the semifinals, both he and LaHaie ran 5.22's with Joe coming out on top. In the final, he met Ormsby and a 5.21/266.11 covered Gary's 5.33/270. It was Joe's second win of the year. He almost got another win at the next event, the California Nationals. There he qualified way down in the #12 spot with a 5.15/284.18. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.13/270 when opponent Jack Ostrander broke. In round two he beat Hill with a 5.06/282.39 and in the semifinal, a 5.09/282.39 beat Head. In the final, he met Low ET setter and low qualifier Frank Bradley who beat Joe for the title. He made his third final in a row at the Seafair Nationals at Seattle International. He qualified #1 with a 5.03/282.84 and another 5.03 at 280.72 in the first round, beat Hill. In round two a 5.10/278.51 beat Mike Brotherton and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Ormsby with a 5.07/273.88. In the final he ran LaHaie and even though Dick ran a strong 5.10/278, it was no match for Amato who set Low ET with a 5.01/278.98 in winning his third race of the season. The fourth win came pretty quick, it was at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. He had his worst qualifying spot of the season there when he ran a 5.39/255.75 for the #15 position. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.14/279.15 to beat Bradley's identical 5.14/278. He beat a tire-smoking Darrell Gwynn in round two with a 5.20/275.73 and in the semifinals, a 5.16/277 beat Snow's ailing car. In the final, he ran a 5.24/278.81 over Muldowney for the win. Things didn't go as well at Indy for the US Nationals. Joe qualified #4 with a 5.02/286.16. He beat Frank Cook in the first round. In round two he caught Bradley napping and won with a 5.16/287.08 to Frank's 5.11/274. But in the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 10.56/74.96 loss to LaHaie's 5.01/280. The next event was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A 5.01/283.82 qualified #5 and in the first round, Joe advanced with a 5.00/288.55 when John Carey fouled. He cracked into the fours in round two, running a 4.96/290.32 over Muldowney's 4.97/287. He stayed in the fours in the semifinals with a 4.98/288.18 beating a tire-blazing Ormsby. But in the final, when he definitely needed to run a four, a 5.01/285.98 came in second best to Gwynn's 4.95/281. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, Joe ran a career best (to this point) of 4.95/288.18 to qualify #3. He beat Gene Snow in round one, with a 5.02/286.18 and in round two, a 5.07/287.17 beat Hill. But a semifinal 5.01/291.26 lost to Ormsby's 4.98/289. The second last race of the year was the Fallnationals at Firebird raceway. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.07/280.81. He beat an engine blowing Ed Moore in round one, and a 5.11/277 beat Lori Johns in round two. But a semifinal 5.14 lost to Muldowney's 5.16.

Notes: After a multi-year contract with TRW ended over the Winter of '89, Amato found new sponsorship from Valvoline for '90. He had finished #2 in the NHRA points chase in '89 and was hoping to do better in '90. Joe started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the new 3.20 rear-end rule didn't seem to slow him down. He qualified #3 with a 5.03/282.39 (Top Speed), but in the first round, he dropped a cylinder and slowed to 5.24/253.66 in a loss to Don Prudhomme's 5.15/270. The next race was the Arizona Nationals. Amato qualified #5 with a 4.99 at a track record speed of 282.92. He then went on to win by beating Connie Kalitta with a 5.04/281.07; a 5.03/275.48 in round two beat Frank Bradley's 5.11/271, and a 5.08/273.97 in the semifinals stopped Gene Snow's 5.12/268. Joe faced '89 NHRA Top Fuel Champion Gary Ormsby in the final, and Joe's 5.05/275.14 got the victory over Ormsby's 5.11. This was his first NHRA victory in eight months. He qualified #5 again at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. This time a 4.99/280.37 got him the spot. In round one, Joe beat Top Fuel rookie Ken Koretsky with a 5.08/276.66, while a 5.04/271.98 took out Leo Gastellum in round two. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 7.91/140.09 loss against Snow, who also had problems at 7.23/114. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.06/282.84 qualified #3. Both he and his first-round opponent, Eddie Hill, smoked the tires in the first round, and Eddie's 5.98/256 got to the line before Joe's 6.24/203.06. He then won the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham early in April. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.04/279.58 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Darrell Gwynn's 4.94/277. These two would reach the final together. In the opening round, Joe's 5.02/277.34 beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.14/272, and he beat the other former Funny Car driver, Prudhomme, in the semifinal with a 5.01 279.06, which beat the "Snake's" 5.24/265. Both he and Gwynn had run similar times to reach the final, and Amato even had lane choice. But it was Amato's driving that got the win as he was first off the line, and his 5.04/272.64 outran Gwynn's 5.02/277. Sadly, that was the last NHRA event Gwynn ran due to his accident in England on Easter. Joe set a track record 4.96 in qualifying #1 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His speed on the run was 280.11. The car slowed to 5.14/272.14 in the opening round, but it was still enough to beat Gastellum's 5.26/269. Another 5.14 at 273.63 defeated Jim Head's 5.21/265 in round two. The team found the problem for their slower times was a weak fuel pump. It was changed for his semifinal race with Bradley and Joe shot to 5.00/287.17 to win over Frank, who overpowered the track and smoked the tires. The speed was tops for the race and was five miles per hour faster than any other run made there. He faced Lori Johns in the final, and both ran 5.02 (Amato at 282.30), but the lady crossed the stripe first. These two would also face off in the final at NHRA's next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Joe's career-best (to this point) of 4.941/288.46 qualified #1 and broke both ends of the track record. He got lucky in the first round, as he blew his engine on his "odd-lot" solo. The crew installed a new "bullet" for round two, and his 5.02/274 beat Snow's 5.07. Both he and Johns ran 4.99 in winning their semifinal races, with Amato having the better speed at 282 while beating Bernstein. But once again, Amato finished runner-up to Johns as he smoked the tires while she ran 5.00/270 to win. Aside from qualifying #1 with a 5.03 (Low ET) at 281.95, the NHRA Cajun Nationals was not a great race for the team. Only 15 cars showed, so he got a solo in round one, before fouling against Snow in round two. Things went better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 5.04/279.06 qualified second to Frank Hawley's 5.04/275 in Gwynn's car. He stayed in the 5.0 zone by beating Koretsky's 5.33/266 in the opening round with a 5.09/275.98 and a 5.06/277 in round two beat Bradley. In the semifinal, he fell off to 5.13/272.47, but it was still enough to stop Dick Lahaie's 5.16/267. Joe was going into his 45th NHRA Top Fuel final. The two lowest qualifiers met in the final, and Hawley's 5.12/278 got an emotional victory over Amato's 5.22/272.47. Plus 4.939 low qualifier at the 1990 Chief Auto Parts Nationals. He ran 4.955 at Englishtown. Speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Indy 1990.

Notes: This was a good year for Dennis. he qualified everywhere, won some rounds. Dennis was runner up at Memphis and the World Finals (giving Darryl Gwynn all he wanted in the final, losing 5.13 to 5.14). He went to the semis in Atlanta. Forcelle started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.49 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Dick LaHaie. Dick beat him in their race and went on to win the event. He next went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. 27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen car show, and his 5.26/267.71 qualified #8. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.41/228 lost to Tim Morgan's 5.34/262. Dennis' next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Bill Mullins fouled against him in the opening round, and his 5.31/267.85 advanced. But another 5.31 at 263.15 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 5.25/248 in the semifinal. The following weekend (March 20), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.17/275 and, in the first round, was upset by Shirley Muldowney. It was then off to Desoto Dragway for the rain-delayed IHRA Supernationals. Unfortunately, in round one, his tire-smoking 6.76 lost to Rocky Epperly's 5.53. Forcelle had a good showing at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He ran 5.38 in the first round, to advance, and in round two, his 5.34/266 covered Muldowney's 5.48/267, but he fell to Eddie Hill in the semifinal. At the IHRA Texas Nationals, he qualified #5 at 5.16/270.51. This was the race that saw Hill run the sport's first 4-second pass. In the opening round, he beat Muldowney with a 5.18/271, but the car broke on the line against Frank Hawley in round two. Even though Dennis didn't qualify well (#12 at 5.42) at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, he ran well in eliminations. He beat LaHaie in round one. Ray Stutz lost fire in round two, and his 5.43/267 advanced. In the semifinal, another 5.43 at 258 stopped Joe Amato, who lost a blower belt. He faced low qualifier Darrell Gwynn in the final. Gwynn had been running 5.2's all day, and the final was no exception as his 5.24/269 got the win over Forcelle's 5.31/267.61 runner-up effort. Photo from Columbus 1988. Did Dennis run 279.06 this year in the IHRA? (The 275.90 was his best NHRA speed).

Notes: IHRA 1. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1978. Also 5.90 at 241.28 in an article. Won Indy 1978 with an eliminations best of 5.86/243. Number one qualifier at NHRA Winters at 5.777/245.90. Ran Donovan this year. Gary Beck was quoted as saying, "If he (Garlits) puts a Donovan in that thing, I'm going to put a train whistle on mine, to move him over at 1,000 feet!" Garlits had a great season in '78. It started early with a win at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.15 (Low ET) and then ran 6.23/221 over Jerry Ruth in the first round. He repeated those numbers in round two while beating Marvin Graham, and in the semifinals, Don didn't receive a time slip, but he was clocked at 238.72 (Top Speed and a new track record) while beating Frank Bradley. In the final, he faced Paul Longenecker, and Garlits stepped it back up, running a 6.16/236 for the victory. Don ran over 240 on several occasions on the NHRA trail, but no faster than the Pomona 245.90. We formerly listed 247.25 for this year. Did he do that on the AHRA or IHRA trail?

Notes: Wrecked at Spokane, Washington, on a Friday afternoon checkout pass at the AHRA World Finals at Spokane. At the time, crewchief Herb Parks said on TV that it likely was Don's last ride. Thankfully, that did not come true. Don was racing the NHRA tour this year, too. The AHRA Finals were staged in the week between Brainerd and Indy. NOTE: This photo is of Don's Swamp Rat 30. We need a photo of the car that crashed.

Notes: Won NHRA Springnationals in 1993. Jim Hawkins' DragStats confirm ET and speed. The second member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on February 13, 1993, at Pomona, California - an entire season after Bernstein. | Herbert started the '92 season at Firebird Raceway in Jan for a test session. He and his crew chief, Jim Brissette, had their '92 car there and were testing a new 18-finger clutch for the first time, as last season, they had used a 15-finger unit. The first pass was a 4.93/293.73. The speed was a new track record, and the ET tied Eddie Hill's record. Doug smoked the tires on the subsequent two runs before getting a 5.04/291.73 on his final pass. A wounded rear main bearing put an end to the weekend test. The team then went to Pomona in February for the NHRA Winternationals. Doug ran 4.95/293.35 to qualify #10, but then in the first round of eliminations, he stepped up to 4.85/301.60 to beat Mike Dunn's 4.97/281. Herbert had become just the second driver behind Bernstein to break 300 MPH. In round two, he beat Jim Head's 5.07/286 with a 5.08/283.46. Unfortunately, he was stopped by Bernstein's 4.88/292 in the semifinals, where he "only" ran 4.95/295.08. It was a good start for the season. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona the following week, a 4.89/294.69 qualified #5. He set Top Speed of the meet for the second week in a row with a 4.83/299.00 in the first round, over Don Prudhomme's 4.93/276. In the second round, he slowed to 5.01/284.72, losing to Pat Austin's 4.89/294. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. Herbert qualified #4 with a 4.85/292.39. Another 4.85 at 298.60 in the first round dropped Austin's 4.93/295. In round two, he continued to lay down the numbers, turning a 4.89/298.70 to stop Joe Amato's 4.95/272. His run ended there as he lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch in the semifinals. Doug ran 300 mph again at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 4.86/300.10 to qualify #2. But in the first round, he lost a blower belt and slowed to 9.31 in a loss to Amato's tire-smoking 7.84. After running so well, it was surprising that Doug failed to qualify at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.02/287.53 best was good for the fourth alternate. The problems continued at Atlanta, where his 5.04/292.87 was the first alternate at the NHRA Southern Nationals. The team appeared to be in a slump. Memphis was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Mid-South Nationals. Doug qualified #15 with a 5.05/284.45. He had some luck thrown his way in the first round when Bernstein fouled, and Herbert advanced with a 5.22/265.87. But in the second round, he fouled away a 5.03/295.37 against Amato. Unfortunately, in the first round, a 6.54/218 did him no good against Dick LaHaie's 6.18/224. He was at Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #5 and shut down against low qualifier and eventual winner Graham in the opening round. Hilton qualified #7 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 5.90/247.25. Notes: Tommy was the fourteenth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club on September 29, 1990, with the 4.964 at Topeka. Tommy started the season at Pomona, failing to qualify (10.37/79.71). He was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where his 5.03/283.73 qualified #10. Both he and his first-round opponent, Shirley Muldowney, smoked the tires but Johnson's 6.01/267.93 crossed the finish line first in front of Shirley's 6.59/207. In the second round, his 5.38/211.41 fell to eventual winner Dick LaHaie's 4.96/279. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Gatornationals held in mid-March. Tommy "only" qualified #13 with a 5.20/273.55. In the first round, he stepped up to a career-best 5.01/284.81, but he lost to a holeshot-aided 5.06/277 from LaHaie. Notes: Kalitta's best of 6.06/233.76 failed to qualify at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals (3rd alternate). He went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.05/235.60 qualified #11 in the field. He faced his former girlfriend Shirley Muldowney in the first round, and his tire-smoking 7.15/220.04 lost to her 5.96. A week later (March 15), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 5.832/245.90 to qualify #8. A first-round 5.848/241.28 beat Kerry Sweigert, but in the second round, Kalitta again faced off against Muldowney. And once again, the results were the same, with Shirley's 5.74/250 beating Conrad's 6.135/215.82. Kalitta was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his best of 5.945 was good for the sixth alternate in the eight-car show. On May 3, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Kalitta qualified #7 in the eight-car show and lost to Jeb Allen's 5.85 in the first round, with a 6.20. Connie qualified #13 at Columbus with a 5.981/233.96. He lost to Terry Capp in the first round, 5.98/219 to 6.096/238.09. He qualified #7 at the Mile High Nats with a 6.06/237.46 but lost a close one to Johnny Abbott on a holeshot in round one, 6.012/235 to 6.003/236.84 (.023 seconds - about 7 feet). He qualified #4 at Englishtown with a nice 5.821/239.99. But nemesis Terry Capp upset him in round one, 6.03/233 to 6.165/229.59.
