Notes: This was a great season for Glidden. He started the year by running 7.425/186.76 to qualify first at Pomona (he qualified #1 at all the NHRA races in '87). He beat Mark Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.65/180.43 before losing to Butch Leal's 7.52/183 in the second round with a quicker but later 7.45/186.60. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.41/186.21 got him the #1 spot in the field. He beat a fouling Steve Schmidt in the first round with a 7.40/187.96, and in round two, his 7.44/187 beat Jerry Eckman. Bob set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.39/187.96 while beating Darrell Alderman, but after the run, he found a cracked cylinder head. The team pulled engines and installed a new one for the final against Leal. Unfortunately, Bob fouled in the final, handing Butch the victory. The next event was the NHRA Winston All-Star race at the Texas Motorplex. The non-points race featured only eight-car Pro fields. Of course, Glidden qualified #1 with a track record 7.318 at 189.55. Bob beat Leal's 7.40/186 with a 7.33/189.67 (Top Speed) in the first round, but in round two, both he and Joe Lepone Jr. ran 7.46 (Glidden at 187.85), with Lepone getting the win light. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.38/187.96 got him his customary #1 spot in qualifying. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 7.37/188.36 while beating Don Coonce in round one, and a 7.43/187 beat Warren Johnson in round two. Another 7.43/187.26 beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/185 in the semifinals. This put Bob in the final against Leal again. Glidden was not to be denied his 53 career NHRA victory, and his final round 7.42/187.46 assured him the win over Leal's 7.49/185. The fourth NHRA race of the season was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge in May. The #1 qualifying spot was taken by a 7.51/189.99 (Top Speed). He set Low ET and a track record 7.45 at 186.64 in the first round while taking out Tony Christian. His 7.52/185.75 beat a tire-shaking WJ in the second round, but a semifinal 7.58/189.91 lost to Leal's 7.52/184. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, setting both ends of the track record with 7.49/186.33 times to get the spot. An opening round 7.50/184.91 defeated Don Campanello's 7.69/182. In round two, his 7.52/185.10 took out Stan Mizell's 7.65/181, and another 7.50/185.41 beat Allen's 7.65/182. He faced #2 qualifier Leal in the final, and Glidden racked up his 54th victory with a 7.50/185.29, beating Leal's 7.63/180. It was interesting to note that while he was obviously doing great in the NHRA competition, he was also running every other weekend in IHRA and regularly winning there, too. The NHRA Grandnationals didn't go so well. He qualified #1 at 7.51/186.41 (Low ET and Top Speed). In the first round of competition, his 7.61/184.76 lost to Nick Nikolis' 7.60/181. At the NHRA Sumernationals, Bob's track record 7.42 at 186.33 earned him the pole. That made it a full year since anyone but Glidden qualified #1 in NHRA Pro Stock. The last time anyone else qualified #1 was at the NHRA Grandnationals in '86. In the opening round, he ran 7.50/184.95 to take out Leal's 7.57/182, but in round two, a quick-leaving 7.67/181 by Jerry Haas beat his 7.60/184.76. Reher and Morrison debuted a new Beretta for driver Bruce Allen at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an effort to stop Glidden's domination. Bob still got his 16th straight #1 qualifying spot with a 7.88/175.47 (Top Speed), but Allen's new car qualified #2. These two would meet in the final. Bob started his drive by running 7.93/174.01 over Nikolis. A round two 7.93/173.41 stopped Kenny Delco, and in the semifinal, his 7.92/173.34 beat Leal, who fouled. The Chevy vs. Ford final was great, and Bob pulled off career victory number 55 with a 7.87 (Low ET) at 171.55 in beating Allen's 7.99/173. Brainerd was the next event on the NHRA schedule for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob got his customary #1 spot with a 7.49/184.99 in qualifying. Once again, Allen was #2 but half a tenth back at 7.55. These two would once again battle it out. Bob beat Leal in the opening round. Then he ran 7.47/185.45 in round two over Darrell Alderman. The car went into heavy tire shake in the semifinal, but Bob drove out of it, and his 7.58/184.31 narrowly beat Warren Johnson's similar 7.58/182. So, facing Allen in the final, Bruce got lane choice due to his 7.57 semifinal win. The two had a great race that saw Allen's 7.53/183 win over Bob's 7.58/181.34. At Indy, there was a race within the race as NHRA ran the Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge. This race only allowed the top eight qualifiers over the last 12 months to complete. Glidden was the #1 seed coming into this event. His 7.43/190.59 beat WJ's 7.54/187 in round one. He almost duplicated those times in the semifinal, with his 7.43/190.39 taking out Leal's 7.55/184. Once again, he faced the Beretta of Allen in the final. Bob won the event with a final 7.54/188.16 over Bruce's 7.64/184. Photo from Indy 1987. He Ran 7.318 best time at the Ennis All-Stars race, but records were not set at that race. Bob then set the national speed record at Indy 191.32, then the ET record twice: Chief Nats (7.354, 7.352). Bob ran 7.519/186.41 at NHRA Baton Rouge Cajun Nats 1987.

Notes: Schmidt was the second alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.47/186.87. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where his 7.45/185.95 qualified #15. He lost to eventual winner Rickie Smith in the opening round. The following week (March 20), he was one of 55 drivers attempting to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ended up as the eleventh alternate at 7.45/186.68. Steve just missed the show at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals when his 7.49/184.23 failed to crack the 7.48 "bump."His 7.381/186.72 qualified #11 at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. In the first round, his 7.46/184.65 fell to Warren Johnson's 7.38/187. The 7.381/186.72 at Maple Grove and 186.87 at the Pomona Winters were his best NHRA national event times. We formerly listed 7.355 at 188.10. Were those run at one of the independent 500-inch shows? MIR, Oregon?

Notes: Joe was the first alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He failed to qualify at Gainesville as well, where his 7.70/182.70 was the eighth alternate. He made the show at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, where he qualified #14 with a 7.67/179.92, but he lost to Joe Lepone in the first round. Unfortunately, he failed to make the show at the next few races. A best of 7.82/178.14 was only good for the eighth alternate at the Cajun Nationals. At the Springnationals, his 7.76/179.31 was eight alternate again. The Super Stock Nationals was only an eight-car show, and he was the second alternate there. A 7.86/177.23 was the sixth alternate at the Grandnationals. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, he ran 7.63/180.36 for the seventh alternate. The bump was a 7.59, but these shows were tough to qualify at. He went to Denver for the Mile High Nationals and ran 8.04/170.03 to qualify #11. Joe must have been excited because, in the first round, he faced Butch Leal and fouled. He qualified at the next event as well, the Northstar Nationals in August, where he ran 7.72/179.28 for the #11 spot. He lost to Warren Johnson in the first round. At Indy for the US Nationals, he failed to qualify. After that, it was off to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. He ran a strong 7.58/181.81 to qualify on the "bump" spot in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 7.63/180.32 lost to Leal's 7.54/183. He was the second alternate at the Chief Nationals with a best of 7.65/180.90. At the Fallnationals, a 7.76/178.28 was the sixth alternate. Wrecked this car in Minnesota. Photo from Indy 87.

Notes: Reid entered the 1984 NHRA season with a lot to prove after his amazing 7.620 at the World Finals in 1983. He started inauspiciously with a 7.918/175.09 first alternate shot at the Winternationals. However, he did get into the show and lost to Warren Johnson in the first round, 7.884/178.21 to 7.886/176.12. Reid then brought out a brand new Don Hardy Daytona at Gainesville. He was first alternate DNQ at 7.844/176.81 but got into the show and – like the World Finals a few months earlier – ran an out-of-this-world 7.615/174.41 to defeat Ken Dondero’s 7.814/175.78 in round one. Amazingly, a two-tenths Dondero holeshot (.450 to .646) almost stole the race. The margin of victory was .003 seconds! This run only added to the mystery and suspicion about Whisnant’s combination, especially after Don Coonce defeated him in round two, 7.78/179 to a ‘normal’ 7.893/175.09 from Reid. Whisnant followed this with DNQ efforts in Atlanta (7.943/174.75) and Columbus (7.940/176.12). He qualified #15 at Sanair at 7.839/178.57 and lost in round one, to Frank Iaconio, 7.76/180 to 7.956/176.47. Reid was a third alternate DNQ at Englishtown at 7.854/175.78 and also DNQ’d at Indy at 7.881/176.47. He qualified #14 at the World Finals at 7.814/176.47. He got a legit win over Andy Mannarino in round one, 7.890/175.78 to 8.015/176.12, but lost to Butch Leal in round two, 7.765/178.92 to 7.867- 176.47. Reid was a hard-running campaigner who often qualified and ran well. But his ability to drop two tenths from his normal times in 1983/1984 will have pro stock fans forever questioning those low 7.6 second runs.

Notes: Won 75 IHRA All American Nationals at Bristol. Also 8.83 at Ontario 75. Low qualifier at Indy 1975 at 8.752/152.54. | Booth's season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 9.18 in the first round, over Rich Simone's Mustang II and in round two, a 9.17 beat Joe Satmary's 9.27. A 9.11/149.50 wasn't needed in the semifinals when Larry Huff fouled, but it put Booth in the final against Bob Glidden who had debuted his new '70 Mustang. Wally tried hard with a 9.12/149.25, but was still left behind Glidden's 8.99/152. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Booth qualified #5 with an 8.92/151.77. He lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's 8.89/154 with an 8.98/152.28. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals held on March 16. Wally didn't qualify very well as his 8.98 put him in the #11 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with Larry Lombardo that the Hornet lost. During this, Dick Arons was working hard on the cylinder heads, lopping off and sectioning the heads for more power and as the season progressed the results were showing. In April, Wally won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. He qualified #1 with an 8.95 and went into the final against Reid Whisnant where his 9.05/149.50 beat Reid's 9.06/152. In May he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car show and got around Huff in the first round, before fouling away a 9.03 in the semifinal against Satmary's 9.15. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 9.06/149.00 qualified #7. In the first round, a 9.11/149.25 beat Satmary's 9.19/147. In round two, a 9.09/149.75 lost to Bill Jenkins' 9.03/150. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #11 with a 9.07. A first-round 9.06/149.75 lost to the "other" Hornet driver, Dave Kanners, who ran 9.02/150. Wally won the AHRA Drag Nationals at Kansas City on August 3. He beat Fred Shafer's Vega in the first round, with a 9.09 and another 9.09 in the semifinals beat Floyd Williams. In the final, he met Warren Johnson and the Hornet's 9.08/148.51 got the win over the Camaro's 9.13/149. Maryland International hosted the fourth NHRA Division 1 race on August 16, and Wally made it into the final where his 8.97/149.75 finished second best to Gapp's 8.90/147. The following week (August 24), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #6 with an 8.95 and improved to a first-round 8.92 over Paul Davis. Unfortunately, he fouled in round two against Shafer. Booth showed that the cylinder head work was paying off as he set a new NHRA record in qualifying #1 at the US Nationals with an 8.75. He lasted until the semifinals where he fouled away an 8.80 against eventual winner Gapp's 8.87. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open and proved that his times were no fluke. He qualified #1 with an 8.86 and a first-round 8.85/153.32 beat Charlie Castaldo. In round two, an 8.82/154.10 beat Fred Turner. In the semifinals, he kept the pressure on with another 8.82/153.32 over a fouling Scott Shafiroff. In the final, he was to have faced Lee Edwards' Camaro, but Lee had broken a timing chain in his semifinal run so Booth got to make a solo for the win. What a solo it was, as he ran Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.81/154.37 for the title. It was a strong showing for the little Hornet. At the NHRA Division 2 final at DeSoto Speedway, Wally set Low ET at 8.97, but in the final he decided to take a little nap and his 9.00/150.50 lost to Johnny Dowey's 9.24/145. At the NHRA World Finals, he qualified #3 with an 8.83/152.80, but he lost in the first round.

Notes: Mike had to be disappointed at Pomona as he failed to qualify. Only two Mopars qualified for the sixteen-car field. Shortly after this, NHRA gave the Hemis a new 7.10 lb. per cubic inch weight break. It seemed to help as at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, four Mopars qualified and Fons' 8.97/152.54 was the quickest (#9). But he faced Bob Glidden in the opening round and Mike's 9.03 lost to Glidden's 8.96.
