Notes: My lifelong racing pal since 1957, Larry Rayl of Topeka, Kansas, and I were at Orange County International's "Super Track" for their All-Pro Championships on February 14/1971. The late great "Big John" Mazmanian had two Funny Car entries. Rich Siroonian Funny Car 717, Big John's late great-nephew, drove the familiar Woody Gilmore chassied, Keith Black powered, candy red 'Cuda. And the all-new Woody built mini 'Cuda with the gold trim shown in Larry's nice pit photo was driven by John's new No. 2 driver, Larry "Pineapple" Reyes, Funny Car 201, who had already run this car at the recent 1971 NHRA Pomona Winternationals. Larry Reyes was my "pioneer main man" of Nitro Funny Cars at the time. Larry's "pioneer main man," Don the Snake Prudhomme, stole the OCIR All-Pro Funny Car show that day by saving his best for last and winning with a then mind-boggling dragster time of 6.62 ET at 226.13 mph in his “Lil' John” Buttera built, Keith Black 426 Hemi powered 'Cuda. In comparison, Big John's Keith Black 426 Hemi 'Cuda Funny Cars only ran in the 6.80s. And Tony Nancy's dragster had Low ET of the meet at 6.46 at 232.55 mph. However, Mr. "C" Gary Cochran's car won top fuel dragster. Mazmanian's two-car plan for 1971 was for Reyes to tour back east with the new car and the late great "Sir" Rich Siroonian would join him at the many National meets with the older 'Cuda. After the March Meet at Bakersfield, CA, where Siroonian drove instead of Reyes, Mike Snively Funny Car 707 took over the reins of this same mini 'Cuda Funny Car, with all new Rueben candy red paint and lettering and Maz sold the old car. Larry and I again saw the new 'Cuda with Snively driving at Dallas, Texas, at the NHRA Spring Nationals. Good memories. - Cliff Tarpy | Qualified #5 at Pomona Winternationals at 7.12/198. Won first-round over Dave Condit, 7.04/201.79 to 7.18. Lost second round to Jake Johnston, 7.03 to 7.11.
