Notes: Bob started the season by qualifying #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.28/190.27. He beat Larry Morgan in the first round with a 7.33/189.51. Another 7.33 at 189.87 beat Don Beverley's quicker 7.29/190 in round two. He improved to a 7.29/190.31 in the semifinals, but it wasn't enough to beat Jim Yates' 7.28/190. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.29/190.59 qualified #5, but a first-round 7.34/189.83 lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.26/189. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Glidden qualified #4 with a 7.18/192.30. In round one, he ran 7.19/192.06 beat Paul Rebeschi, but in round two, his 7.22/191.85 lost to eventual winner Mark Pawuk's 7.21/190. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the team had a bit of bad luck when the Probe almost rolled off the 12-foot-high platform while unloading the car. Bob's son Rusty tried to stop it and fell, breaking both wrists. After that, it was business as usual. A 7.20/192.76 qualified #9. Bob picked up to a 7.18/192.14 in the first round, but he lost a close one to Pawuk's 7.17/192. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April, and Bob ran well there. He qualified #4 at 7.22/192.18. In the first two rounds, he ran 7.24/192.47 over Rebeschi and 7.23/192.22 over Morgan's 7.22/189. In the semifinals, he lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.25/190 with a 7.29/190.92. Glidden qualified #1 for the first time since the '89 Arizona Nationals at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He got the spot with a 7.21/191.12. A consistent 7.22/191.36 beat Gary Brown in round one, but a 7.26/190.51 in round two lost to Morgan's 7.25/189. He went from first to last when he qualified on the "bump" at the next NHRA race, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. His 7.31/189.95 held down the last spot in the sixteen-car field. He lost to low qualifier Scott Geoffrion's 7.25/192 in the first round, with a 7.30/190.25. The roller-coaster ride continued at the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #1 with a 7.25 (Low ET) at 190.75. In the first round, he beat John Nobile with a 7.29/189.99, but a holeshot 7.36/188 by Rickie Smith beat his 7.31/189.55 in round two. NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the Grandnationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.26/191.32, but the car went into severe tire shake in the first round, and Bob shut off to 9.48/112.17 in a loss to Eckman's 7.58/189. Over the last 12 months, Glidden had earned enough points to qualify for one of the eight positions available for the Budweiser Pro Stock Challenge race run at Englishtown in conjunction with the NHRA Summernationals. Glidden had accumulated 2,290 points to qualify #5 in the Challenge. His 7.33/190.70 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.29/189 in the Reher-Morrison Lumina in the opening round of eliminations. At the Summernationals, he did much better. He qualified #4 with a 7.27/191.20. His 7.26/191.00 beat Nobile in the first round, while an even better 7.25/191.24 in round two took out Rebeschi. In the semifinals, he slowed to 7.30/190.71, losing to eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.25/192. The next stop on the NHRA calendar was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Bob always ran well at Bandimere, and '92 was no different. His son Rusty was also running for the first time and qualified for the field. Bob's 7.66/179.24 gave him the #7 spot in the show, and in the first round, he got out on Allen, and his 7.71/178.07 beat Bruce's quicker 7.68/178. He tried to cut the light again in round two, but he cut it to close and fouled away a 7.72/178.50 while Johnson advanced with a 7.64/181. It was Johnson who stopped him at the NHRA California Nationals as well. There Bob had only qualified #15 with a 7.26/192.10. In the first round, he had a close race with Allen in the first round, which saw his 7.25/191.16 beat Allen's 7.26/190. In the second round, he slowed to 7.33/190.59, but it was still enough to trailer Yates' 7.36/188. But in the semifinals, Warren's 7.22 stopped Glidden. |

Notes: Ran 75/79. Finished No. 2 in 1976. Photo from the 1977 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 8.83 at Pomona, 8.84 at Gainesville, 8.80 at Columbus, 8.81 at Englishtown, 8.74 at Indy, 8.640 at Seattle, 8.80 at Ontario. | Warren started his '77 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 in the field with an 8.91, and he beat Jim Basko in the first round, with an 8.98/153.28. Another 8.91 took out Kevin Rotty in round two, and a semifinal 8.95/153.58 put him into the final against low qualifier Larry Lombardo in Bill Jenkins' Monza. Larry won the race with an 8.82 (Low ET of the meet) at 153 over WJ's 8.99/153.58. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 but lost early. He also lost early at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his second round 8.93 lost to Lombardo's 8.75. He then went to Pueblo Raceway in Denver for the NHRA Division 5 race. A final round 9.20/147 stopped Lynn Harrison. This was WJ's eighth straight NHRA Division Five race victory. Early in May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 8.84/154.37 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. The race was postponed due to rain, and WJ was unable to return for the rain date. Shortly after that, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.80/155.70 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Wally Booth, and his AMC. The two of them had a good race, but on this day, Booth had the stronger car as his 8.75/154 beat WJ's 8.87/151.77. Early in July, he won the third NHRA Division Five race held at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD His quick-leaving 9.11 got the win over Richie Zul's 9.10. Johnson had some trouble at Englishtown during qualifying for the NHRA Summernationals. His 'chute failed to open during a pass, and he ended up with some front-end damage after he drove off the end of the track. He still managed to qualify #9 with an 8.82. But once again, that set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier. This time, Bob Glidden qualified #1, and Glidden ran a strong 8.68 to put WJ on the trailer. That was followed by yet another NHRA Division Five race win at Brainerd. Early in August, he went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 8.86/154.90 qualified #6. He had a strange first-round race against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. Don had run 8.67/155 but lost to WJ, who did not get any time or speed record on his run. In the semifinals, his 8.80/154.37 lost to Lombardo's 8.62/156. He then won the final NHRA Division Five race held at Thunder Road Dragway, Colorado. A final 9.39/145.37 beat Harrison. The best national event times were 8.640 at Seattle and 157.61 at Pomona. |

Notes: Interesting NHRA national event season. Mark ran Pomona, Seattle, and Ontario. He did not qualify at either Pomona or Seattle but got into eliminations as an alternate at both races. He ran 9.06 at Pomona (second alternate). He got in but shut off to a 17-second run that lost to Kevin Rotty’s 8.97 in round one. He was the first alternate at Seattle at 8.935/153.84. He got in and improved to an 8.84/153.32 in round one, which lost to Don Nicholson’s 8.64/155.17. Mark then qualified #11 at Ontario at 8.905/153.58 and marched to a semifinal finish. In round one, he defeated Sonny Bryant, 8.90 to 8.97, upset Warren Johnson on a holeshot in round two, 8.84 to 8.81, and then lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden’s 8.59 with 8.825/154.90 season bests in round three. |

Notes: June 7, 1997 is a day Div. 6 racer Chuck Smithfield will never forget. During Comp qualifying his BB/A Baretta burst into flames just as he was staging. Quick action (especially by racer George Scott in the third pic) had the big flames out very quickly with a minimal amount of damage and no injuries. I don't recall if Chuck even exited the car. — at Pacific Raceways. Larry Pfister |

Notes: Low ET and Top Speed at the season-opening Winternationals at 5.937/244.56. Runner up to Garlits at IHRA Bristol in June 1975, 6.10/238.72 to 6.18/225.56. Won IHRA Dragway 42 over Garlits, 6.00 to 6.03, both at 245.23, in August 1975. | After a great '74 season, Gary was hoping for more in '75. The season started at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.42/229.00 lost to James Warren's 6.35/206. Gary then went to Pomona, where his 5.97/239.36 qualified #2. He set both Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.93/244.46 over Don Souter in the first round. Unfortunately, in round two, he smoked the tires to a 6.49/212.26 loss to Rick Ramsey's 6.18/211. He passed up racing at the Bakersfield March Meet. His next stop was at Miami Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and Beck 6.00 (Low ET) was two-tenths quicker than the second qualifier. But in the opening round of eliminations, he lost an engine and slowed to 6.41 in a loss to Austin Myers' 6.22. It was then off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gary's 6.19 qualified #7, and in round one, he had more bad luck as he tossed a blower belt against Hank Endres. After a few weeks off, Beck went to Amarillo, Texas, for the IHRA World Nationals. Things didn't go so well, as he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. He also didn't do too well when he faced off against Jerry Ruth for a best-of-three-match race at Mission BC. Gary lost all three of his races. Things went much more Beck's style at the second NHRA Division One race held at Cayuga. He won the event by beating Charlie Greer's 6.67/218 with a 6.36/205.94. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.25/231.95 that sent Grant Stoms' 6.46/227 packing for home. He had his closest race in the final, where his 6.47/204.08 beat Larry Bucher's 6.48/200. Early in June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.11/227.84 qualified #6. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.22/222.77 beat Frank Bradley's 6.21/222. But in round two, Beck broke on the line, letting eventual winner Marvin Graham solo into the semifinal with a 6.23. Set the national record at Ontario, only to have Garlits better it and pass Gary for the world championship. Ran 5.74 for the low qualifier at the 1975 World Finals. |
