Notes: Blown fuel. This was the car Jack ran for Sachs & Sons in 1964 with all updated sheet metal. (Started 1964 with Sachs & Sons on side). Roof was about the only thing that didn't change. July 1966 Car Craft says this car ran 'around 9.20's' in 1965. Confirmed 9.79. We need confirmation of best ET. Run by Dee Keaton in 1966, then bought back from him by Chrisman when Chrisman's 1966 Comet roadster burned to the ground. - DD, BP

Notes: Blown fuel, rear-engine exhibition racer. Former Dick Branstner, Roger Lindamood-campaigned 1965 "Dart Charger." Garlits originally painted this car white with polka dots and called it the "Polka Dart." Promoters insisted it carry his name and be black, so it was painted that way. Garlits yanked the Dart's original TorqueFlite trans, replaced it with a direct drive unit, and moved the entire mill rearward another 13 inches. This car was destroyed in a crash in Detroit in 1966. Garlits replaced this car with the "Don Garlits Dart 2," a slingshot rail with a Dart roadster shell. | As mentioned, the Dart was wrecked in Detroit on June 11. The car went into a wheelstand in the lights at 157 mph and flipped over onto its roof. Luckily, it never got airborne but just continued sliding down the track on its roof. Emery was not hurt, and at first, it seemed that the car was not too badly damaged. However, upon further inspection, it was found that the frame was damaged pretty badly. Notes: Injected fuel AWB. Pete Gates was an unknown when he began his funny car career by buying Dyno Don Nicholson's 1965 Comet. Dyno actually drove his "old car" in the first couple of races while Pete got used to the car. Putting an Art Carr automatic transmission in the "old '65 Comet" and entering the 1966 Super Stock Nationals, Pete blew away all the big names in funny car racing like Dyno, Fast Eddie Schartman, Beswick, and others to win in his first time out. In 1967, Pete got a new car with a leftover 1966 Comet fiberglass body on a brand new Logghe chassis. The Gate Job was born. Pete won a few match races with the Gate Job, including the Memorial Day Olympics of Drag Racing at Great Lakes Dragway. In mid-year, Pete received a new 1967 Comet body. It was all red with two white stripes down the top, unlike the blended, saucy paint job of the original Gate Job. For 1968, Gates got a 1968 Cougar with a new Logghe chassis. Pete ran the Gate Job Cougar into 1969, then hung up his driving gloves. Car was run by Fred Gendian in 1968. (Photo and text provided by Daryl Huffman) | Confirmed 8.92 at New York National 66 per 9/9/66 Drag News.

After crashing the first Chevelle at Detroit in May (the 1965 car), they built this and ran it until they debuted the Corvair later in the year.
