Notes: 1978 IHRA champion. Best NHRA times were 5.920 (240.64) at Columbus and 243.24 (5.991) in Indy 1978 eliminations. | Harris was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 6.10/239. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.27/227 beat Bob Struksnes' 6.44/230. But he had problems against Marvin Graham in round two and shut down. The following week (March 19), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show and his 6.43/212 qualified #2 behind Don Garlits' 6.36/229. He then set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.14/234.98 that stopped Dick LaHaie’s 6.23/226. In the semifinals, Harris' 6.24/197 advanced when Lee Weller lost fire on the line. Clayton faced Dale Thierer driving the "Jim and Allison Lee" car in the final. Harris clearly had the performance advantage and it showed in the final as Dale shut down to a 6.81/177 while Harris' 6.27/234 got him the victory. He also ran well at Rockingham in April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.16/234. A first-round 6.48/224 beat Mark Howick and he got the "odd-lot solo" in round two and ran 6.69/174 to advance. Unfortunately, a semifinal 6.85/157 lost to Weller's 6.44/229. |

Notes: Lou was at Detroit in June for the Noth American Grand Nationals. All ten cars competing ran the first-round, and the four Low ET cars would then advance into the semifinal. Novotny lost to Dick LaHaie in the opening round, but his ET was good enough to get into the semifinals. He raced Bill Pryor, and Bill's 6.69 defeated his 6.89. But Pryor had lost a supercharger on the run, so Lou moved into the final with the "break rule" in place. He faced LaHaie once more, and the results were the same. Dick's 6.23/216 beat his 6.67/216.34. Lou qualified #32 at NHRA Indianapolis in September with a 6.26. He ran 6.30/224 in a tough first-round loss to Marvin Graham's 6.30/229. |

Notes: Jim Pisano talked Marvin into switching to the late model Milodon hemi. Ran 6.30/229 in eliminations at Indy 1978. Also qualified at 6.11 at Indy US Nationals 9/78, and ran 240.00 at Indy US Nationals 9/78. | Marvin Graham started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. His 6.39 qualified #5 for the sixteen-car field. An opening round 6.38/215 beat Gordon Fabeck, but in round two, Graham's 6.27/233 lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 6.23/221. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Marvin qualified #13 with a 6.020/243.90. But a first-round 6.07/238 lost to Fabeck's quick-leaving 6.08/234. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.028/238.09 qualified #3 behind the Donovan powered cars of Kelly Brown and Garlits. Graham ran a solo 6.26/237 in the first round, when alternate Hank Johnson lost fire on the line. He had another easy run in round two when Clayton Harris had problems and shut off on the line. Graham advanced with a 13.76. But in the semifinals, Brown’s 6.06/238 beat his 6.32/236.22. The Pomona Winternationals times would stand as Marvin's best NHRA national event times of the year. |
