Notes: Strucksnes was nicknamed 'Back Door Bob' because he 'drove it out the back door' (ran continually high speeds). Bob started his '76 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. In the opening round, his 6.28/226.70 beat Billy Graham's 6.52/224. A 6.43/224.43 was enough to defeat Shirley Muldowney's ailing 7.28/141 in round two, but he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.87 in the semi-final and lost to Paul Longenecker's 6.34/212. His 6.12/238.98 qualified #7 at Beeline Dragway Phoenix for the Winter Classic. In round one, Bruce Hagestad had an oil leak and shut down on the line against him, and Bob ran 6.29/226.13 to advance. Both he and Herm Petersen smoked the tires in the semi-final, and Herm's 6.55/227 beat his 6.56/229.00. At Gainesville, he qualified #4 for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.04/248.61 (Top Speed). An engine damaging 6.62 beat John Wiebe in the first round as John lost traction and shut down. Struksnes was unable to repair in time for round two. He was at Denver in April for the NHRA Division Five opener. He made it into the final, where his 6.63/194.39 finished runner-up to Wiebe's 6.42/220. He won the second NHRA Division Five race held at Pueblo Motorsports Park on May 23. He set Low ET in the final with his 6.34/217.37 stopping Tom Kaiser's 6.44/199. Struksnes really ran well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 6.00/243.24 qualified second to Richard Tharp's 5.94/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A 6.16/237.46 defeated James Warren in round one before his 6.19/240.00 fell to Dale Funk's 5.99/238 in round two. He and Kaiser reversed their roles at Marion S.D. for the third NHRA Division Five race held at Thunder Valley. Kaiser was running an aluminum KB for the first time, and his 6.57/219 in the final beat Bob's 6.82/173.41 runner-up effort. He then won the fourth NHRA Division Five race held in Minnesota on July 25. Only five cars showed, and he got to make an easy first-round single when Ed Diehm failed to show. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semi-final and ran 6.43/215. He faced Graham Light in the final, and his 6.31/241.93 (Top Speed) got the win. Bob also ran 6.03/241.93 at the NHRA US Nationals in September. His best NHRA National event times were 5.995 at Seattle and 248.61 at the Gators, although he had some 6.00 and 6.01 times, too. Some times and information from National Dragster, 6/27/75. |

Notes: Won Division 7 four times, 72/76. The 5.883 was the low qualifier at the 74 World Finals. Also 5.94/241.93 low qualifier at 74 Winters. | Started the season on January 12 for the Irwindale Grand Premiere. There was no qualifying as starting positions were drawn from a hat. All eight-cars were members of the Cragar five-second club. Unfortunately, James shut down early in his first-round race with an 8.48 loss to John Stewart's wheelstanding 7.62. He then went to Pomona and qualified #1 as mentioned above. A first-round 6.01/230.17 beat Jim Murphy's off pace 7.05, but Jerry Ruth's 6.27/202 beat his 6.43/162 in the second round. The team loaded up and went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Warren qualified #11, but he lost to Billy Tidwell in the first round. On March 17 at the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont, a 6.38 qualified #3. A first-round 6.18/230.27 beat Frank Bradley. In the second round, a 6.26 beat Dwight Salisbury's 6.34. In the semis, they lost a motor at half-track, leaving Dennis Baca a 6.21/234 winner. On April 6 at the OCIR AHRA Grand American race, James set Low ET of the meet in qualifying with a 6.06. That was pretty good considering 42 cars were going for 16 spots. He ran 6.22 and 6.14 in the first two rounds before exploding a supercharger in the semifinal against Dan Richins. He still advanced because Dan fouled. In the final, a 6.35/223.88 was a bit short of Don Garlits' 6.24/239.36. 6.29 230.17 1974 NHRA US Nationals. |

Notes: Won Division 7 four times, 72/76. Also 5.832 at Fremont 5/75 and 5.922/226.70 Low Qualifier at Bakersfield 75, 5.922/226.70 and 5.80 and 5.84 at Ontario World Finals 75. | Started the season on Jan 5 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. Thirty cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Warren qualified #1 with a 6.05, almost two-tenths better than the second qualifier. He advanced past the first-round when Danny Ongais lost fire and a second round 6.04 beat a tire-smoking Gary Read. In the semis, he got another easy ride when Tom Toler lost fire. But a final round Low ET and Top Speed at 6.01/239.36 over Walt Rhoades' 6.18/236 proved it was no fluke. The team then set Low ET of the meet at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.10 over Shirley Muldowney in the second round. James had also set Top Speed earlier at 237.46. In the semifinal, a 6.35/206.88 beat Gary Beck's 6.42/229. But in the final, Marvin Graham stopped him. After those runs, it was surprising that the team's best of 6.11 (third alternate) failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. But at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, they were back on top of their game, a 5.92/226.70 qualified Warren first. A first-round 5.90/217 advanced when Don Ewald fouled. In round two a 5.93/233.16 beat Tony Nancy (6.15/221), and a third round 5.91/229 beat Larry Dixon's Chevy. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 5.87/235.60 over Gary Ritter. In the final, another 5.91 at a Top Speed of the meet 243.24 gave James the title over Jeb Allen's 6.13/235. Another win in March came at the AHRA Grand American West Meet at OCIR. Warren qualified #2 with a 6.21/214.79. He again set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.10/234.37. He beat Bob Noice in the final. He didn't race at many IHRA events, but he did attempt to run the Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood, but they failed to qualify. Early in May, he won the Irwindale "Fox Hunt" race, beating Walt Rhoades in the final. Also in May, at Fremont for the Northern Nationals, Warren set Low ET of the meet in qualifying with a 5.83/237.46. A first-round 5.99/238.09 beat Rhoades' 6.19/234. In round two a 5.96/232.55 beat Dennis Baca. He met Frank Bradley in the final. A 5.93/234.98 defeated Frank's 6.00/242 for the victory. In July, he ran 6.01 to Rick Ramsey's 5.95 to take runner-up at OCIR's Nitro Championships. James ran his best NHRA national event times at the World Finals at Ontario with a 5.780/247.25 during eliminations. |

Notes: Gordie was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #9. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang. Unfortunately, Bonin's engine let go, and he had a major fire just off the line. He was OK. The damage was minimal, and the team repaired it in time to make it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Gordie ran 6.410/233.16 (Top Speed) to qualify #11. A first-round 6.545/227.84 lost to Mike Miller's 6.43/220 in the "Green Elephant." At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, Bonin qualified #2 with a 6.30/233.76 behind Don Prudhomme's amazing 6.08/235. A 6.46/223.88 in the first round lost to Jake Johnston's 6.29/225. On March 16, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin continued to qualify well, running 6.437/230.17 for the #4 spot in the field. A first-round 6.678/225.00 lost to Tom Prock's 6.62/224. At the Seattle Opener, Bonin beat Jerry Ruth's Mustang in the first round, with a 6.56/220.58, but in his second race, he went into a wheelstand and shut off, losing to Ed McCulloch's 6.27/218. Bonin was back in Seattle in June for the second Olympia All-Pro Series race. An opening round 6.54/224.43 beat Bill Spevacek's off-pace 7.87/138, and in the semifinals, Gordie ran 6.66/227.27 to beat Mike Miller's 6.84/211 in the "Green Elephant" car. He faced Twig Zeigler in the final, and Bonin took the victory with a track record speed of 230.17 coupled with an ET of 6.32 over Twig's 6.56/229 runner-up effort. Gordie qualified #3 at NHRA Columbus with a 6.472/220.04. He beat Bob Pickett in round one, 6.990/216.34 to 10.35/68. Shirl Greer beat him in round two, 6.53/206 to a 9.59 shut-off. On June 29, he was at Edmonton International for the NHRA Division Six race. Things did not go well there as he lost fire on his burnout in the first round, giving Ken McLean a solo. Things went better at Bremerton for the next NHRA Division Six race. A 6.69 qualified #1; in round one, his 6.82 beat Larry Palmer. He smoked the tires in the semifinals, but his 7.14 was still enough to beat Don Rae's 7.86. He faced Miller in the final and got a 6.61 victory over the "Elephant's" 6.97. He was running a new Schiefer clutch setup rather than the conventional Crower glide. He ran a 6.432/217 best at the PHR US 131 race, losing to Denny Savage. At NHRA Sanair, Gordie qualified #6 at 6.62/213.27 but lost to Tom Prock in round one, 6.54/216 to 6.67/217.39. Gordie was the seventh alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.560/227.27. He qualified #14 at Seattle at 6.980/195.22 and lost to John Lombardo in round one, 6.86/196 to 7.255/216.34. Gordie ended the year with a fourth alternate effort at Ontario. We don't have those times, but the third alternate was Paul Smith at 6.439. |
