Notes: Preston was at Gainesville in mid-February for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.61 qualified second to Don Garlits' 6.55. In the opening round, the car came up to the line ailing, and he lost to Ron Potter's 6.81. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for an eight-car show. He caught a great light in the first round, and his 7.41 beat Henry Harrison's better 7.30. Davis improved to 7.20 in the semi-final to beat Larry Brown. In the final, he faced Cliff Smith, and Davis's 7.09/205.46 scored the victory. He was at Phenix Dragway in the first week of April for the first NHRA Division Two race. He beat Ken Kelly in the first round with a 7.44. In the semi-final, a 7.32 beat Bobby Thomas's Chevy-powered car. He faced low qualifier "Sneaky Pete" Robinson in the final. The two had a great race that saw Preston's 7.11 (Low ET) at 201.34 come out on top over Pete's 7.13/207 in his Ford-powered car. He also won the second NHRA Division Two race held at Suffolk early in May. A 6.86/207.84 got the win over Fred Forkner, who broke in the final. Another victory came over an eight-car field at Southland Dragway. Arthur Ingelhart fouled against him in the final. Yet another win came at the third NHRA Division Two race at Blaney. The final was between him and Robinson, who had set a new track record earlier. But Pete had problems in the final and slowed to 9.72/94 while Preston ran 7.25/199.54 to win. At the end of May, he was back at Gainesville for the next NHRA Division Two race. He lost an engine in the opening round, but his 7.43/192.30 still beat Thomas. In the semi-final, Jim Paoli's parachute fell out on the run and slowed him to 7.90, while Davis advanced with a 7.20/198.22. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire for the final, and Charlie Moulder soloed for the win. On August 15, Davis was in Oklahoma for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.02. In the first round, he was upset by eventual winner Ronnie Martin. Preston won Division 2 in 1970. He was half of the then quickest side-by-side race in history against John Wiebe at Indy 1970 (6.65 to Preston's 6.93). Preston also ran 6.744/211.76 at Dallas. His best NHRA national event times were 6.610/223.32 at Indy.

Notes: Don Steele was a radio personality. The Howards Cams Rat. Ran 6.14/204.54 and 6.21/193.96 at PRO NY National in August 1974. Ran 6.07 at Sacramento. | Larry started the '74 season at Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. There was no qualifying as the positions were drawn from a hat. All eight-cars in the field were members of Cragar's Five Second Club. Larry drew Don Moody in his first-round race and Moody fouled, advancing Dixon into the semifinal. In his semifinal race, he ran Tommy Ivo, who smoked the tires to a 7.74 and Larry won with a 6.65/193.96. In the final, he was up against the "Old Man," Don Garlits. Larry's Chevy lost a blower on the line and Garlits took the victory with a 6.38/226. The team did not qualify at the Pomona Winternationals, but Larry ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #15 in the 32 car field with a 6.37. An opening round 6.51 beat Bob Williams' 6.62 and he made an easy pass in round two when Jeb Allen fouled. In round three, the Chevy finally met its match as he lost to Gary Beck. He disappeared from the qualifying lists for the early part of the year as the team was "dialing in" their Chevy powerplant and they failed to qualify at quite a few shows, but the team made the field at the OCIR Nitro Jam held at the end of June. Dixon beat Gary Hazen's 6.66 in the first round, with a 6.47 and in round two, a quick-leaving 6.40/218.97 beat James Warren's 6.36/229. Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Bradley's 5.97 in the semifinals. The following week (July 6), he was back at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. An opening round 6.38/205.47 beat Gary Ritter's 6.43/219, but in the second round, Leland Kolb's 6.32/225 stopped his 6.39/207.85. The team had a great NHRA Indy event. They qualified #17 at 6.193/215.31, then got a holeshot win in round one, at 6.205/214.79 over Jerry Ruth's 6.144/234.37. Larry then defeated Sarge Arciero, 6.179/215.82 to a shut off 8.67 at 1999. Gaines Markley finally ended the Chevy’s day in round three, 6.167/237.46 to 6.272/209.30. The team qualified #8 at the World Finals at 6.011/226.70, but nemesis Markley got them in the first round, 6.08/220 to 6.30/198.

Notes: On January 12, sixteen cars vied for eights spots at Irwindale; Jim qualified #1 and ran a 7.40/201.34 over Wayne King's 8.20/190.66 in the first round, but lost a supercharger and was out for the rest of the day. He qualified eleventh at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.09/213.77. A first-round 7.12/212.76 beat Ron Manke. In the second round, he improved to a 7.00/214.80 over Ken Safford's 7.22/211.76. In round three, a 6.97 beat Gerry Glenn, but his 7.08/215.82 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.93/217 in the semifinal. He failed to qualify on February 9 at OCIR for the second All-Pro race, where 35 top fuelers tried to get into the eight-car show. He took a big win on March 2 at the Bakersfield March Meet. A 7.10/214.28 beat a fouling Stan Shiroma in the first round, followed by a holeshot win over Ron Rivero when his 6.99/220.58 beat Ron's 6.98/215. He got back at Prudhomme for his semifinal loss at Pomona by beating Don in the third round, both ran 6.93, but Dunn's slower 210 speed beat the Snake's charging 218. Jim ran even quicker in the semifinal with a 6.87/221.67 that beat Larry Dixon. In the final, a 6.94/215.82 beat Dave Babler's 7.00/214 for the win. A 7.04 qualified #13 at the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 16. He lost power and the race to Norm Wilcox's 7.43/194 in the first round. He was at Lions for an eight-car show on April 12, but his best of 6.97/224.42 failed to qualify. He qualified for a sixteen-car show at OCIR on May 17, but he fouled in the first round, after running over his crewman, Joe Medina. After Jim's burnout for his first-round match with Leland Kolb, Joe pulled the dragster back to the starting line. Joe lost his footing, and the right rear slick ran him over. When Jim was asked if Medina was OK, Jim stated, "Hell Ya, Gave him a beer, and he was OK." Irwindale hosted the NHRA Division 7 race on May 24. It was a sixteen-car show, and 25 cars failed to qualify (the good ol' days!) Jim qualified well and, in the first round, a 7.14 advanced, but he lost in the second round. At the NHRA Springnationals at Dallas on June 15, Dunn used a strong 6.75/214.79 to qualify #4. A first-round 6.86/216.86 beat Dixon. Tommy Larkin fouled against him in the second round, and he cooled it to a 9.72 for the win. In the third round, Dwight Salisbury also overstaged and fouled, but Jim ripped to a 6.77/218.97 win. In the semifinals, he ran another strong 6.90/189.87 but lost to Hank Westmoreland's 6.80/210. Irwindale held its Fourth of July race, and Jim qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.98. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. On August 17, he won the Division 7 race at Bonneville Raceway with a final round 7.21/201.27 over Al Pehrson. At the US Nationals, a 6.60/221.20 qualified sixth. But in the first round, he fouled against Butch Maas. Won Division 7 in 1969. Jim also ran 6.753/214.97 at Dallas International Motor Speedway NHRA 1969.

Notes: Tom ran 6.85 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/69, 6.838 at Indy US Nationals 9/69, 6.71 at Dallas International Motor Speedway, and 6.83 at Minnesota. Tom was at Minneapolis on June 8 for a best-of-three-match race against Bennie Osborn. In their first race, Hoover's late 6.92/206.88 lost to Bennie's 7.03/225. The two had a really good second race that saw Hoover reset the track record with a 6.83 at 214.28 that defeated Osborn's 6.86/222 and tied up the match. Bennie ended up winning the match by running 6.85/224 in their final race that covered Tom's 6.98/208.32. Shortly after that (June 15), he was at Dallas International for the NHRA Springnationals. It was a 32 car field, and his 6.91/200.44 qualified #22. He picked up a tenth in the opening round, where his 6.81/217.39 beat John Mulligan. Unfortunately, he lost to Bob Downey in round two. Tom's best times in NHRA competition were 6.723/221.13 at the Dallas Springs and Pomona. Reportedly went 222.5 at Indy, but that may have been a DNQ pass for which we don't have evidence.

Notes: Last Front engine dragster. A newspaper report from 1971 notes that Vic Brown's 6.55/228.42 at Union Grove (Wis.) on 5/30/70 broke a track record set the previous Labor Day by Chris Karamesines (6.56/227.31). - RT | Also 6.755/202.70 original listing and 6.56 at New York National. Karamesines was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field. In the opening round of eliminations, he fouled against Dave Chenevert. Chris did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, choosing to run at Lions for the AHRA Grand American run on the same weekend(March 8). There, his 6.94 beat Frank Rupert in round one, but in the second round, his 6.77 lost to Jimmy King's 6.69. In April, he was at LaPlace's Spring Drag Festival. It was only an eight-car show, and Chris ran 6.92 to qualify #6. A first-round 8.77 advanced when Mike Tarter broke on the line, and in the semifinals, his 6.90/207.84 beat Cliff Smith's ailing car. Not sure what happened in the final (maybe he fouled?), but his 6.85/208.80 finished runner-up to Chip Woodall's 7.54/166. On April 19, the "Greek" was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Unfortunately, he broke against "Sneaky Pete" Robinson in the first round.

Notes: At the AHRA Winternationals, Osborn qualified #13 in the 32 car field. His 7.12 beat Steve Carbone's quicker 7.04 in the first round, but he lost to Leroy Goldstein in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #25 with a 7.20/190.67 and advanced past the first round with a 7.41/205.50 when Jim Nicoll fouled. In the second round, his 7.11 beat Ron Rivero's quicker 7.08. In the third round, John Mulligan's 6.86/221 stopped his 7.42/158.17. He qualified fifth (7.11/218.96) at the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9. That was pretty good, considering that 35 cars were going for the eight available positions. A first-round 6.98/220.04 carried him past Butch Maas' 7.27/171. He fouled against Carbone in the semifinal. At Bakersfield for the March Meet, Bennie qualified #18, and a 6.96/202.24 got him past a fouling Gerry Glenn in the first round. His second-round 7.91 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 7.36. He won over an eight-car field at Oklahoma on April 6. He set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.15/213.38 in the final over John Wiebe's 7.27/198. He then went to Amarillo on April 20 for the second NHRA South Central Pro Fuel Circuit race. It was an eight-car show that had 22 cars attempting to qualify. Unfortunately, Bennie failed to qualify. A week later (April 27), he was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division Four race. A 7.09 qualified #3 for the sixteen-car field, but he lost early. On May 11, he raced at NHRA's Division 4 race at Tulsa. A 7.08 qualified second to Carbone, and the two of them made their way into the final. Carbone laid down a 6.87 track record to stop Osborn in the final. At the third Division 4 race at Corpus Christi on May 18, he took a big win, beating a fouling Larry Brown in the final with a motor-saving 8.28. Earlier, he qualified second with a 6.92 behind Watus Simpson's 6.91. He ran 7.67 on a first-round single when Dave Chenevert was unable to run, and in the second round, his 7.17/211.26 beat Chip Woodall. In the semifinals, a 7.77 beat Pete Robinson's sleepy 7.29. He faced Tom Hoover in a best-of-three-match race at Minneapolis on June 8. In the first race, his slower 7.03/225 beat Tom's 6.92/206. In the second race, Hoover's track record 6.83 beat Osborn's 6.86/222.76 to even up the match. Bennie locked up the match in the final race with a 6.85/224.42 that beat Tom's 6.98/208. At Dallas on June 15 for the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.96/221.67 qualified #29. He fouled against Chenevert in the first round. Shortly after that, he was back at Corpus Christi for a sixteen-car show. He ran 7.33 to qualify #3. A 7.43 in the opening round beat Wes Granger's 8.28, and he improved to 7.27 in round two that defeated George Cox's quicker but later 7.19. Paul Pritchette fouled against him in the semifinal, and Osborn made an easy pass to advance. He went up against future superstar Kenny Bernstein in the final. Bernstein got the victory with a 7.15 over Bennie's 7.31 runner-up effort. Twenty-three cars tried for the eight spots available at the Division 5 race at the end of June at Opelousas, Louisiana. Bennie's 7.01 fell just short of the 6.99 bump. He had blown his good engine and attempted to make the show with his backup motor. Back at Dallas on July 20 for the Division 4 race, Bennie took another win, running as quick as a 6.89 over George Cox's 6.95 in the semifinal. For the win, he beat Richard Tharp in the Carroll Bros. car. On August 9, he ran at the OCIR Anniversary race. A 7.08/212.76 beat Butch Maas in the first round, but he fouled away a 7.04/214.79 against James Warren in the semis. At the AHRA World Championships at Green Valley on August 24, a 7.06 qualified #16 in the #32 car field. He ran an 8.12/124 first-round run over a fouling Grover Rogers. In the second round, Woodall's 6.99/210 beat his 7.24/198.22. At the Division 4 final at Amarillo, a 7.06 qualified second. He was upset in the first round by Larry Brown's 7.44 that beat his 7.49. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 6.735/218.97 qualified #25. He ran a first-round 6.82/217 over Don Garlits, who accidentally hit the kill switch. Due to John Mulligan's accident, he ran a 6.87/185.56 single in the second round. He fouled away a 6.77/222.22 against Don Prudhomme in round three. He was back at Tulsa on October 19 for the AHRA Points Finals. A first-round 6.96 beat Robinson who had John Skiba helping out. A second-round 7.02 beat Jim Nicoll, but his clutch locked up against Leroy Goldstein in the semifinal, and he was eliminated. Then he traveled to Dallas for the NHRA World Finals on October 26. He qualified second with a 6.74/222.76. A first-round 6.84/217.91 beat Ron Goodsell's 6.96/217. He singled with a 6.82/223.88 (Top Speed) when Kelly Brown lost fire in Leland Kolb's car. In the semifinal, Carbone's 6.69/211 beat Bennie's 6.96/218.97. The Indy 6.735 and Dallas 223.88 were his best NHRA national event times. Where did Bennie run 227? Notes: At the AHRA Winternationals, Dave qualified #8, and in round one, his 7.28/191.48 beat Gerry Glenn's 7.27. Unfortunately, he lost to Cliff Zink in the second round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #31 with a 7.27/196.93 but improved to a first-round 7.04 that lost to Jerry Ruth's holeshot-aided 7.10. Dave was at Martin, Michigan, on July 4. The track was holding two eight-car Top Fuel races. One was a UDRA race, and the other was called an "All-Star." Powers ran in the "All-Star" race, and in the opening round, his 7.08/211.76 beat Duke Ray in the "GuZler." He set Low ET of the meet in the semifinal, where his 6.95/217.38 beat a fouling Leroy Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" car. He faced Don Cook in the final, and despite running 6.97/217.90 (Top Speed), he left a big red light shining back on the tree. This year, the team qualified both their Top Fuel car and a Funny Car at Indy.

Notes: Dwight qualified #4 at the Pomona Winters at 7.021/225.00 (in a four-way tie for Top Speed). He lost to a Kenny Safford holeshot in round one, 7.18/209.30, to Dwight's 7.17/213.77. Dwight ran a 6.83 at the Bakersfield March Meet. On April 13, Dwight competed at an eight-car show in Seattle. Jerry Ruth fouled against him in the first round, but Dwight motored through with a motor blowing 7.53 and could not run in the semis. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.894/222.77 qualified sixteenth. He beat Larry Brown in the first round, with a 7.005/205.94 and a 6.830/219.51 beat Bob Williams' quicker 6.80/215 in round two. In the third round, Dwight overstaged and fouled against Jim Dunn. On June 22, Dwight was at LaPlace for a best of three match against Leroy Goldstein, driving the "Ramchargers" car. In the first race, Salisbury ran 7.01/210.76 to beat Goldstein's much quicker 6.89/212. His luck didn't hold as in the second race he fouled, and in the third, the car lost fire, and the "Ramchargers" soloed for the match race win. Dwight qualified #24 at Indy at 6.731/225.00. He fouled against John Wiebe in round one and shut down to a 9.39. Dwight also ran 6.755 somewhere this year and ran a 7.10 at the Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship. | Dick Smothers sponsored this car, but I left him in the owner's box, although it was Jim Busby's car, and he was the crew chief (Dick was funny but tuning a nitro hemi was not his forte).
