Notes: 1969 NHRA Springnationals (Dallas) Top Fuel Runner-up. Ran 6.99 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/69, 7.10 at Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship, 6.75 at Dallas International Motor Speedway NHRA 69. | Lou Baney had a great season in '67 with Don Prudhomme behind the wheel, but in '68 the wins didn't come so easily. Ford was putting more emphasis on it's Super Stock program and its new 429 engine. The 427 SOHC motor was now old news and Ford wasn't helping with developing it more for Top Fuel competition. Don talked with Lou about going on his own for '69 and Baney gave him his blessings. Even Lou was considering switching to a Chrysler for '69. Instead, he hired Kelly Brown to drive and stuck with the SOHC for another year. They had a pretty good season together other than when Lou got run over at OCIR. This is how it went. Kelly qualified tenth with a 7.08/223.88 at the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Chuck Kurzawa in the first round. He failed to qualify at the second OCIR All-Pro race. Another first-round loss came at the Bakersfield March Meet where Tommy Allen's 7.25/193 beat his off pace 7.65/163. On March 16 at the HRM Championships, he qualified #20 with a 7.10, but a sub-par 7.24/200 in the first round, lost to Frank Pedregon's 6.98/221.13. Better things were to come for the SOHC powered car, when on March 29 at the final OCIR All-Pro event, a 7.01/218.44 qualified fourth. Another 7.01/194.80 beat James Warren in the first round, but Steve Carbone beat Kelly in the semifinal. Lions held an eight-car show on April 19 and Kelly qualified #3 with a 6.74. In the first round, he took a bit of a snooze on the line and his 6.86/195.22 lost to Rick Stewart's slower 6.94/211. On April 26, he ran an eight-car show at OCIR. He qualified #3 with a 6.81/226.70 (Top Speed). A first-round 6.86/224.42 put him in the semifinal where another strong 6.85/222.76 beat Gerry Glenn to put him in the final where Kelly's 6.84/205.94 beat James Warren for the title. On May 10, Irwindale held an eight-car show and a first-round wheelstand against Glenn's 6.96 finished the day for them. A week later (May 17), they showed up at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. A first-round 7.42/199.10 beat Denny Fitt's ailing 8.07/172. Warren fouled against Brown in the second round and Leland Kolb did likewise in the semis. In the final, Kelly set Low ET with a 6.88/221.66 beating Gary Cochran. Another sixteen-car show was held at Irwindale on May 24 for the Division 7 Opener. A holeshot 6.94 beat Butch Maas' 6.88 in the first round, but Warren got some revenge for his loss to Kelly the previous week, as a 6.87/225 defeated Kelly's 6.99/213.38 in the second round. Fremont hosted NHRA's second Division 7 race on June 8. Over 40 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Brown ran 6.93 to qualify #5. In the first round, he fell off to a 7.04/219 that lost to Jim Davis' 7.00/208. At the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, a 6.75/214.79 qualified third. He ran 6.92/215.31 over Kerry Mackenroth, 6.73/220.04 over Dave Babler's 6.96/221, and 6.86/215.82 over George Cox, leading to a semifinal race with Baney's previous driver from the year before, Don Prudhomme. In a wheel to wheel battle, Kelly's 6.78/213.27 just nipped Prudhomme's 6.79/215.31. In the final, a blown cylinder head slowed the car to a 6.91/184.04 that lost to Hank Westmoreland's 6.84/214. On July 5 at OCIR's Nitro Championships, Ron Hampshire fouled against Brown in the first round, but a tire-smoking 7.67/212.26 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.24/218 in the second frame. At Irwindale's second annual Race with a Reason on July 12, Kelly set Top Speed at 225.00 and was to have faced Ron Hampshire in the final of the sixteen-car show, but the final was called off due to the late hour (after 2 am). Things went bad on July 19 at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Kelly qualified ninth with a 6.93 and in the first round, was to race Tommy Allen. The linkage got stuck and Lou Baney went to work un-sticking it. Just as the throttle got free the car launched forward with the rear slick pinning Lou against the red-hot zoomie pipes. He was taken to the hospital for his burns and did recover. But while Lou was laid up the Baney-Brown car was also laid up and Kelly went to work driving Leland Kolb's car. Kelly ran Kolb's car the rest of the season until December 14 when he showed up at Irwindale for an eight-car show back in Baney's Ford. The team qualified third with a 6.80 and lasted until Gerry Glenn's 7.34 beat Kelly's 7.55 in the semifinal.

Notes: For the NHRA Winternationals, Kalitta qualified #8 at 7.681 but lost to Tommy Allen in round one, 7.61/208 to 7.62/198.22. He ran 7.62/203.60 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships on 2/11/66 and 7.87 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. Connie qualified with a 7.51/208.32 at Famoso for the March Meet but lost in round two. He faced off against Bobby Langley for a best two out of three match race at Amarillo on March 27. Connie won all three races with a best of 7.67/205.57. He was in Detroit on April 13 for a four-car race. He lost to Chris Karamesines in his first race, and in the second race, his 7.73/208.32 lost to Garlits' 7.65/206. It was not Kalitta's day as in the third race, his 7.76/209.30 lost to Jimmy Nix's 7.85/210. Kalitta ran Bobby Vodnik at Atco on May 1 for a best two out of three match. He set both ends of the track record in the first race with a 7.67/215.30, but he had fouled, and Bobby won the first race. In the second race, Kalitta lost a blower and the match when Bobby's 8.05/197 gave him two wins in a row over the Ford. Kalitta bolted on another blower and soloed with a 7.76/208.80. Another big match race was run at Capitol on May 7 against the "Ramchargers" with Don Westerdale driving. Kalitta won the first race with a 7.35 track speed record of 221.12. In the second race, he fouled away a 7.61/211, letting the "Rams" 7.80/206 have an easy win. Don fouled in the final deciding race, and Kalitta powered through with a 7.49/215.82 match race win. The following day (May 8), Connie was at Madison for a match race against Marvin Schwartz. He beat Marvin two straight, setting track records of 7.92/200.88 to win the match. He was at Cecil County on May 15 for a best of three match against Don Prudhomme in the "B&M Tork Master" car. Prudhomme won the first race with a 7.46/216 over the Ford's 7.80/210.76. In the second race, Kalitta took the win with a 7.48/183.28 over the "Snake," who fouled. However, the slow speed resulted from a blown engine, and Connie could not run the final race. Don soloed to win the match. Richmond hosted the NASCAR Springnationals on May 30, and Kalitta lost a blower during qualifying and suffered slight burns. He was unable to make eliminations. At the NHRA Springnationals in Bristol on June 3, a 7.64 qualified him fifth. He won round one over Dave Babler, 7.549/190.26 to 7.67/208, but he lost to a huge holeshot in round two when his 7.522/200.44 couldn't catch Ray Marsh's 7.87/194. He faced Don Garlits for a best of three match at Detroit on June 11. He had some problems with his magneto in the first race and lost with an 8.67. After tearing the motor down and rebuilding it for the second race, it responded with a 7.99/201, but he still lost to Garlits' 7.65/209. A rematch between the two was run at New York on June 26, but once again, Kalitta had problems, this time, he blew a rear end in the first race, and he was unable to repair, so Garlits soloed to win the second race and the match. Another best-of-three match race was run at Connecticut on July 17 against Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." Connie won the first race with an 8.02/187.88, beating Mike's quicker 7.89/197. In the second race, Mike's 7.82/173 beat Connie's 7.99/189.46. Snively lost a motor in the last race while Kalitta won the match with a track record 7.77 at 194.38.There were no shortages of match races available as everyone wanted to see the big SOHC Ford take on the Chryslers. On July 23, Kalitta faced Tommy Ivo at Alton. In their first race, the Ford's 7.77/188.28 came out on top over the Chrysler's 8.07/197. Only one more run was needed to decide the winner, as Kalitta again led Ivo through the traps with his 7.81/192.30 winning over Tommy's 7.93/194. He won the Division 3 race at Bluegrass Dragway on July 24 with little opposition. Kalitta faced another tough opponent in the way of Don Prudhomme for a best of three match at Detroit on July 30. Conrad won the first race with a suspect 7.16/209.78, but Don's holeshot 7.83/200 in the second race beat his quicker 7.53/210, and in the final race, Don again proved why he was such a great driver with another holeshot win, 7.75/204 to Connie's much quicker 7.49/208. These two ran each other again at Capitol Raceway on August 6.This time Kalitta got "revenge" on the "Snake. In the first race, Kalitta won with a 7.45/207.36.Prudhomme came back to win the second race with his 7.50/205 edging the Ford's 7.69/188.28.But the last race was all Kalitta's, as his 7.44/213.28 won the match over Don's shut off 11.33.The SOHC had burned a piston on the last run while the "Snake" had lost an engine. On August 21 at the NASCAR Nationals at Dragway 42, Connie qualified sixteenth with a 7.89 and ran a 7.59 best before Pete Robinson beat him in the semifinals. Connie set the Pittsburgh track record at 200.08. At the US Nationals, Connie qualified #3 with a 7.398/212.76. He beat Val LaPorte in round one, 7.419/209.30 to 14.84/78 but lost in the second round with a 7.515/215.82 to a holeshot 7.558/211.76 by Don Prudhomme. Shortly after that, he went to Detroit Dragway for a best of three match against Nick Colbert. Kalitta lost the match. Connie was one of eight fuel dragster drivers selected to race at Cecil County on September 24 for the Mr. USA Fuel Championships. Unfortunately, the big Ford failed to fire in the first round against Tommy Ivo. This dragster's career came to a halt on October 9 in Connecticut. Kalitta was there to face Ivo in a best-of-three-match race. In the first race, he beat Ivo with a 7.27 track record at 204.54, beating Prudhomme's former 7.54 record. But the run came at a price as the big Ford blew and gave Connie an oil bath. He couldn't see through his oil-covered goggles, and he drove into a trench. The car flipped three times and was totally destroyed. He was lucky enough to walk away with some bumps and bruises. Kalitta had to borrow a chassis to stuff his Cammer into for the NHRA World Finals on October 30 since he had wrecked his car. He qualified #6 at 7.387/204.08 but lost to Pete Robinson in round one, 7.20/188 to 7.537/181.08. - Ron Howard

Notes: We have McEwen driving this car in'66. In'67, he started the year at the Winternationals in the Super Mustang unblown dragster. Lou Baney ran a Ford dealership, and early in'66, he was running a Chrysler Hemi. After McEwen had won the HRM Championships, a Ford deal was secured. Ford's deal with Lou was different from its other SOHC users as Ed Pink was in charge of building the engines, and Ford hoped to sell them through him. Ed was able to make the "cammer" competitive with the Hemi, and his only fault with it was that if you burned a piston on had to pull the heads for any reason, there was not enough time between rounds to get it done. So you needed to install another "bullet" for the next round. Also, the chain driving the cams changed between the two at high rpm. It was very hard to degree the cams, but Pink obviously got it right. The 7.596 was run at Indy in '66. On October 8, Tom was at Lions for the UDRA race. He came off the trailer and ran 7.57/206.42. A better 7.47/209.30 moved him up in qualifying. His 7.57/206.88 beat Dwight Salisbury in the first round, but in round two, his 7.55/196.92 lost to Jack Ewell's quick off the line 7.67/196. At the NHRA World Finals, Tom ran 7.45/201.78 and made it to the semifinal before losing to Dave Beebe. | Also 7.54/203.16 at Lions Drag Strip 8/06/66. - Danny White

Notes: Chuck was at Irwindale on June 7 for an eight-car show. Twelve cars were there and attempted to qualify for the field. Chuck qualified and in the first round, he advanced when his opponent Harry Hibler fouled in Joe Smyser's car. In the semifinals, a 7.13/218.44 beat Bob Williams ailing car. In the final, he met with low qualifier Carl Olson in the Ewell-Bell car. Olson smoked the tires and shut off while Griffith motored to the victory with a 7.16/220.04. This was one of those "King of the Hill" races where the winner of the competition goes up against the car that won the week before. In this race, Chuck raced Gary Cochran. Cochran smoked the tires and watched as Griffith got way out in front only to have his SOHC motor blow. He got an oil bath and pulled the 'chute; this allowed Cochran to go screaming past with a 7.69/211 for the win. Also ran 7.20 at Irwindale 8/13/69.

Notes: The "Foulger Ford" team started the season at Fremont's New Year's Day race. In the first round, Brown beat Dwight Salisbury's 6.99/212 with a 6.97/210.76, but he fouled against Gary Ritter in round two. Kelly qualified #2 for the first OCIR All-Pro race on January 4, but the motor threw a rod, and he was unable to compete in eliminations. He was replaced in the field by Gary Cochran. At the second OCIR All-Pro race held on January 18. Brown set a new track record 6.63 to qualify low, but once again, the gremlins kicked in as he had burned a piston and was unable to run in eliminations. At the AHRA Winternationals, Brown was the second quickest car in first-day qualifying. In the opening round, Jimmy King fouled against him, but he lost to Bob Murray in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, almost 90 cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field. Brown ran 6.852/222.22 to qualify #6. In round one, he improved to 6.792/223.32 to beat Fred Farndon's 7.29/190. Kelly lost fire in round two and lost to Tony Nancy. Motor failure was becoming more and more common with the SOHC Fords trying to keep up with the "stroked" Hemis. Ed Pink stated that at this time, the engine block was lucky to last more than a round or two before cracking. On February 22, Kelly was at the third OCIR All-Pro. He qualified, but he had to step aside with engine issues and let Tony Nancy replace him in eliminations. On March 8, he was at Lions for the second AHRA Grand American. He won his first-round race with a 6.70 but burned all eight pistons and could not make round two. The big Ford could run with the best of them but at a much heavier price. In April, Bill Tidwell took over driving the car, and Kelly moved into Tidwell's former ride, Leland Kolb's car. The team made the switch because both Leland and Brown wanted to tour more, while Lou Baney wanted to stay in Southern California due to business commitments (he owned a dealership).
