Notes: Charlie's Charger was in the northwest for most of its existence 'cuz Charlie was in the Army at Fort Lewis. It ran constantly and won nearly every race all of 1971 except the NHRA WCS events - Jerry Ruth won all five. The Charger set the first Funny Car speed record over 220 that year, a 222.22 at Mission, B.C. Hard to forget that number. - Phil Elliott | Charlie Allen claimed both ends of the Funny Car record at 6.82/222.22. - NHRA | Ran 6.82 at Fremont 6/71 (National Record) |At the rain-delayed Fremont Northern Nationals, Allen qualified with a 7.71/142.85. But he was unable to make it back for the race's rain date. On May 1st, he was at Seattle for an eight-car show, but he broke a rear end in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Deer Park for the NHRA Division 6 race. Eventual winner Jerry Ruth's 7.11/204 beat his 7.17/196.92. He made it into the final at the next NHRA Division 6 race held at Bremerton on May 23. Allen qualified #1 with a 7.03. Only six cars showed, and in the first round, he soloed. In the semifinals, his 7.57/207.84 beat Glen Foster. He went up against Ruth in the final, and his car broke at half-track while Ruth bagged another one with a 6.78. Charlie won the KJR Drag Festival in Seattle on June 20. He beat Jerry Ruth in the final with a 6.81/221. |

Notes: In June, Fred Goeske raced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in a best of three match race at Maple Grove. Fred won the first race with a 7.23/197.80 over Jim's 7.24/190, but Liberman evened the score in the second race with his 7.11/199 beating Goeske's 7.13/188.67. Liberman won the match with a final 7.27/175 that beat Fred's sleepy 7.13/189.47. |

Notes: First 200 mph pass at Numidia. Hanna owned the car fully, but Flynn was involved to use the car name. On June 8, he ran at Epping for the New England Funny Car Championships, but he lost to Jim Liberman in the first round. On July 20, he faced off against Terry Hedrick at Lebanon in a best two out of three match race. Terry's 7.31/200 beat Al's 7.95/176.50 in the first race, but Al came back to win the second to tie up the score. Terry took the win and the match in the final race with a track record 7.29/200 over Hanna's 7.62/191.40. Suffolk had an eight-car show on September 7, with all cars getting in three runs. Al won his first race with a 7.52/187.10 over Malcolm Durham, who lost fire. In his second race, he broke and watched Connie Kalitta single for a win. He ran a 7.65/180.00 for the win in the third race when Arnie Behling fouled in Ed Schartman's Cougar. The following day (September 8), he ran at Connecticut. A first-round 7.63/178.92 beat Curt Wasson's 8.26/180. In the second round, a good 7.65/192.70 wasn't good enough, as Clare Sanders' slower 7.75/184.42 beat him to the line. |

Notes: Oxner was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. Unfortunately, his 6.75 best failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Wayne was at the Cecil County National Open on April 15. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.92 qualified #5, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Harland Thompson, who was driving the "Tom and Jerry" Mustang. In their race, Wayne won with a 6.88/204.08 that beat Thompson's quicker 6.75/174. Unfortunately, the Charger broke in the semifinal, and Oxner had to watch eventual winner Arne Swensen solo into the final. On May 20, he was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the second NHRA Division One race. He won the race and had a pretty easy time of it. A first-round 18.93/35.58 solo advanced when Jim Wemett's car broke. Another solo at 10.72/68.44 got around Bob Parmer, whose car lost fire. In the final, he faced Jim Byrd in the "George's Corvette" car and Jim's off-pace 10.58/76 low to Wayne's 7.16 (Low ET) at 190.67. In June, Wayne was in Connecticut for a sixteen-car show. In the opening round, his 7.34/184 lost to Fred Goeske's 7.26/207. Shortly after that, he was back at Cayuga for the Canadian All-Pro Championships. Unfortunately, he didn't do as well as he lost to Bobby Rowe in the first round. Oxner then went to New England for another sixteen-car show, but once again, Goeske stopped him in the opening round. He failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. On July 25, he was at Maple Grove for its All-American Funny Car race. In the first round, his 7.29/198.67 fell to Lew Arrington's 6.80/221. He won over an eight-car field in August at York US 30's Funny Car Nationals Grand Finale. He beat Larry Fullerton in the final. Wayne won New England Dragway's 1973 season finale, beating Lew Arrington in the final. He ran 6.52/211.76 during a first-round defeat of Bill Leavitt. Oxner used comp number 131 earlier. The car had a Buttera chassis and Kirby/Buttera body with Don Kirby paint. A Cali-built car. The team also ran 6.60 at Suffolk. |

Notes: Parmer was at Maple Grove in May for its Spring All-Pro Championships. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, his 7.21/187.11 beat Arnie Swensen's Vega. In the semifinal, he improved to 6.91/208.33 to defeat Lew Arrington's 6.94/192 in the "Brutus." Unfortunately, he hurt some parts on the run and could not run in the final. Bob ran well at Bristol in mid-June for the IHRA Springnationals. The sixteen-car show had 35 cars attempt to qualify, and Parmer qualified #8. A 6.74/173.74 advanced in round one, when Dodger Glenn broke, and in the second round, he ran 6.59/219.51 but lost to Al Segrini's 6.45/221. The team did not compete on the NHRA national event trail this year. |

Notes: Al was at Maple Grove on April 12 as a backup car for a best of three match race between Bill Flynn and Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." Hanna blew his engine in the first race and was unable to continue. Phillips filled in. In the next race, Flynn won with an 8.00/185 over Earl's 8.07/174.43. In the final race, the "Baltimore Bandit's" 8.33/173.41 lost to the "Yankee Peddler's" 7.71/186. Earl won the NHRA Funny Car circuit race held at Cayuga, Ontario, on July 5. A first-round 8.17/175 advanced when Huston Platt blew his engine on the line. He actually lost to Bill Flynn in the semifinal, but Flynn broke on the line in the final, and Earl was there to take his place. He faced Mel Perry, and Phillips ran 7.92/183 for the victory over Mel's 8.20/178. Mike Gagnon information. |

Notes: A&P Automotive | Powell won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 26. He qualified #1 with a 7.07/205. In the first round, he beat Gary Richards with a 7.05/199.11. In the semifinals, his 7.19/197.80 got around Pete Hill and put him in the final against Phil Castronovo who had earlier set Low ET at 6.98. In the final, he must have had Phil worried and Castronovo fouled away a 7.24/206 while Casey eased to the victory with an 11.29. |

Notes: Ken ran an 8.98 to qualify #5 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. In the first round, a 9.08/152.02 beat Tim McNally's 10.25/128. A second round 9.10/152.54 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.91/152. Ken then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he again ran an 8.98 (152.02) in qualifying. That number was good for the #4 spot in the field. He slowed to a 9.31/148.02 in the first round, that lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.18/150. |

Notes: AMC didn't have a hope racing in Pro Stock until NHRA changed its rules for the '72 season allowing a 6.75 pounds per inch rule for small block cars. Of course, many Vegas and Pintos were being built in the '72 season, but now some AMC products were also being raced. Wally Booth and the Gilbert and Maskin cars had factory backing from AMC. Then there was this one. Rick Buckley independently owned it. He just happened to be the president of Buckley Broadcasting. Rick had teamed with Rich LaMont the year before on a Pro Stock Maverick. While it wasn't very competitive, it got their feet wet in the Pro Stock class. Holman and Moody built this Gremlin. It got the usual acid dipping and retained the AM front suspension stock. At the rear, it used a Dana with 5.57 gears. Traco Engineering built the engine. It was 366 cubic inches. It used a Moldex crank with stock rods and TRW 13/1 pistons. Crane supplied the cam, pushrods, and springs. The hi-rise intake is from Edelbrock, and two Holley carbs sat up top. Rich was at Atco for a four-car show in May. In his first race, his 10.09/137.61 lost to Al Joniec's 9.73/142. LaMont also lost his second race with an 11.31/87.46, falling to Sam Auxier's 10.07/136. The team was the eighth alternate at NHRA Columbus (times unavailable), but Rich qualified #11 at NHRA Sanair (times unavailable). In ROund one, he lost to Ron Hutter, 9.71/138 to 10.05/130.81. At Indy, Rich ran 10.03/133.33 for the first alternate slot. However, he got into the show but lost to Dick Maskin in round one, 9.82/136 to another 10.03 at 133.53. WIBG was a Buckley Broadcasting station. |

Notes: Manchester was at Maple Grove in May for the Dutch Classic. He qualified #7 for the eight-car field, and in the first round, his 9.59/141.06 upset a sleepy Tom Smallwood at 9.37/146. In the semifinal, he had problems and shut down to a losing 13-second run against Carmen Rotonda's 9.34/145. But the other half of the semifinal saw Bill Lawton foul, and Ronnie Lyles broke a rod, so Manchester got back into the show for a final-round showdown with Rotonda. While the two Vega's in the final looked alike, they didn't run alike as Carmen was running steady 9.3's and a final 9.33 against Manchester was all it to took for the win. Ron's first NHRA national event was the Summernationals, where he was the first alternate at 9.517/144.00. He got into the show but dropped a first-round decision to Bill Jenkins, 9.02/151 to 9.67/144.00. He was the third alternate at Sanair at 9.67 and was the 15th alternate at 9.62/142.63 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73. Ron also ran 9.56 at York. He raced at the final Connecticut Dragway pro stock show but ran off the pace with best times of 10.11/131.38. |

Notes: Retained real 4-speed in the Lenco years. Ran at Connecticut last pro stock show of 1973. Was runner up to Richie Zul, running 9.66, 9.69, and 10.02 over Dick Menard, Bob Ingles, and Jeff Jeruss before breaking a water jacket against Zul. Zul was hammering out 9.20s and would have been hard to beat. |

Notes: Chase's 7.15/185.56 at Gainesville was the first alternate for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was at DeSoto Memorial for the second NHRA Division Two race, where his 7.30 qualified second to Tom Finlay's 7.25. But a 7.50/184.80 in the opening round fell to Ben Diener's 7.47/186. He had a great Indy event, qualifying #8 with a 6.78/197.80 and going a few rounds. In the opening round, he beat Keith Craig, 6.96/193.96 to 7.20. Round two saw him run 6.88/194.38 to beat Dale Hall's 6.98/198. Chase redlighted against Ken Veney in round three. He was back at Gainesville on November 21 for the Turkey Trot Nationals. A 7.11/191.48 qualified #1 for the eight-car field, and he set Low ET in the first round at 7.00/193.12 when his opponent, Ben Diener, failed to show. In the semi-final, a 7.08/190.27 beat Dick Balling. He faced Dean Powley in the final, and Knight cut a good light and ran 7.09/191.48 to hold off Dean's better 7.04/198. The following week (November 28), he also won the Snowbird National Open held at DeSoto Memorial raceway. Once again, he qualified #1 with a 7.04/192.77. He beat Bob Hall in the first round with a 7.20/184.04, and in the semi-final, Kenny Long fouled against him, so he made an easy pass to advance. In the final, he "stole" the win as his 7.56/148.76 got the victory when Tom Finlay was caught taking a long nap, and when he woke up, his 7.19/193 failed to catch him. |
