Notes: Gonzales was at Darlington on March 13 for the IHRA Winternationals. He was one of the 13 500 cubic inch cars that qualified for the sixteen-car field. His 7.47/181 got the "bump," which was still pretty good considering that there were 36 cars in attendance. In the opening round of eliminations, he fouled against low qualifier Bob Glidden. The following week he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 7.408/186.21 qualified #12, and in round one, he beat Reid Whisnant, 7.452/187.26 to 7.75/186. Unfortunately, he broke against Joe Lepone in the next round. Carlos ran 7.460/185.10 at IHRA Ennis 4/88. Photo from 1988 Bristol, Tenn. He was the fourth alternate at Atlanta at 7.565/184.08 and the ninth alternate at Memphis at 7.556/184.88. He also DNQd at the following NHRA events: Englishtown at 7.554/183.00 and Indy at 7.503/184.57. Indy was Carlos's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Photo from 1990 Grandnationals, Montreal. | Joe started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.31/187.65. Unfortunately, he slept in the first round, against Rickie Smith and Smith's 7.43/186 beat his quicker 7.35/187.50. At the Arizona Nationals, he ran 7.35/186.76 to qualify #10. In round one both he and Gordie Rivera ran 7.35's, but Rivera got the win. At the third race of the season, the Supernationals at Houston, a 7.32/187.22 qualified #12. But in the first round, he fouled away a 7.36/186.45 against Jerry Eckman. Later that month (March), he was at the Gatornationals where a 7.39/187.72 qualified #14. He lost to Bruce Allen in the first round. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. Joe qualified #4 with a 7.26/188.87 and in the first round, he beat Jim Yates. In the second round, he lost to Mark Pawuk. Joe was running really well, qualifying at all the shows, but he was having a hard time getting past the second round. Just qualifying for these fields was tough. Things went the same at Memphis for the Mid South Nationals. He lasted until round two before losing to Darrell Alderman. At the seventh event of the season, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Joe qualified #10 with a 7.37/187.85. This time he lost to Bob Glidden in round one. At the Springnationals in June, he lost to Smith in round two. In Canada for the Grandnationals, he continued to qualify well running a 7.35 for the #5 spot in the field. He lost to Pawuk in round one. Pawuk got him again at the next race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. This time it was in round two. In Denver for the Mile High Nationals, he stayed true to form. He qualified #10 with a 7.83/175.57. He beat Eckman in round one, before losing to Larry Morgan's 7.79 in round two with a 7.88. The California Nationals at Sonoma was the next race. A 7.33/189.67 qualified #9, but he lost to Alderman in the first round. He lost in the first round, at Seattle for the Northwest Nationals. A 7.41/186.29 lost to Morgan's 7.38/186. Race number fourteen of the season was the Northstar Nationals. Joe qualified #10 with a 7.41/184.04, but lost to eventual winner Allen in the first round. At the US Nationals at Indy, Lepone finally got past the second round. He qualified #9 with a 7.39. He lasted until the semifinals where he fouled away a 7.36 against Eckman's 7.46. |

In the first round, his 7.45/184.57 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.38/187. In the middle of June, he went to St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals, where his 7.53 qualified #9. He lost to Harold Denton in round two. He raced at the NHRA Grandnationals and qualified #15 at 7.43/184.75. In the first round, he beat Warren Johnson, but his car failed the post-race fuel check. He was disqualified, and WJ was reinstated for round two. Sanchez was one of 44 drivers attempting to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals sixteen-car field. He ended up as the sixth alternate with a 7.38/186.41 best. The Atlanta 7.342 and Gainesville 187.11 were Frank's best NHRA national event times of the year. Notes: Photo 81 Nationals. Also ran 6.55 at Gainesville on 3/81 and 6.55 National Record at Epping NH on 8/81. | Joe was at Atlanta for the NHRA Division 2 Opener on March 8. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.86/196.07. A first-round 6.82/199.11 beat Bill Brock, and he set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.68/201.79 over Jeff Richardson. In the final, he faced Bill Mullins Chevy-powered car and the two had a good race with Amato's 6.71/202.70 beating Mullins' 6.73/204. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where qualified #1 with a 6.55/208.33. The car ran like a bracket racer, running 6.59/207.37 in the first round, over Bruce Horner, a round two solo at 6.61/207.37 when Darrell Gwynn lost fire and another 6.59/206.42 beat Bogie Kell in the semifinals. His final round opponent was Chet Rickard who had set Low ET with a 6.49 in the first round. Chet pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled away a 6.52/211 while Joe got the victory with a 6.61/199.11. Amato scored another win at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.62/206 behind Rickard's 6.60. These two would work their way into the final. Joe beat Willard Buff and Gwynn in the semifinals to run Chet. Once again Joe had the slower time in their final round race, but once again he came out on top when his 6.65/206.42 beat Rickard's late 6.61/207. Amato was at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Cayuga Park in Canada in May, and while he failed to reach the finals, he did set Top Speed at 209.30. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Joe qualified #1 with a 6.67, then ran a solo 6.65 in the first round, when Buff failed to fire. In the semifinals, a 6.67 beat Kell's 6.86 and Amato found himself in another final round. He faced Mullins again and this time Bill got the win with a 6.67/206 beating Joe's runner-up effort of 6.70/205.47. Amato and Rickard continued their battle at Atco on June 7 for the NHRA Division 1 race. Joe qualified #1 with a 6.78/203.16 and a 6.76/205.94 (Top Speed) advanced when Jeff Rapp broke in the first round. Another solo run of 6.78/203.16 came in the semifinals after his was opponent, Joe Baker, crashed after winning his first-round race. This put Chet and Joe into another final round meeting. Unfortunately for Joe, his transmission broke and Rickard got the victory with a 6.74/205. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.70/206.42 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 6.77/203.61 beat Mark Pieri and in round two his 6.81/201.79 beat Gwynn's 7.03/201. In the semifinals another 6.81 at 201.34 lost to Brian Raymer's 6.74/205. |

Notes: Tom was at Green Valley Raceway early in April for the NHRA Western Regional. It was an eight-car field, and his 7.12/196.50 qualified #5. He improved to 6.95/203.16 in the opening round of eliminations, but it wasn't enough to beat Willard Buff's 6.70/206. Photo from the 1981 US Nationals. |
