In the first round, he improved to 6.07/229.70 while beating Jerry Gulley. But an even better 6.04/228.83 in round two lost to the race's eventual winner Pat Austin, at 5.98/233. At Brainerd, for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, a 6.23/224.43 qualified #4. In the first round, his 6.21/224.71 beat Tony Bartone's 6.25/224. In round two, a 6.18/226.70 stopped Corky East's 6.27/223 and he continued to improve in the semifinals where he ran 6.16/227.56 to beat Austin, who smoked the tires and shut off. He faced Chuck Cheeseman in the final and despite improving to his best of the weekend, a 6.15/226.52, he lost to Chuck's quicker-leaving 6.16/219. Shortly after that, he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Danny's 6.12/230.53 qualified #9. Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Manzo in the opening round. Next stop was Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, his 6.03/232.49 qualified #4. He stayed in the 6.0s throughout eliminations. A first-round 6.07/229.94 beat Bob Gottschalk's 6.23/219 and he had a close race with Dick Bell in round two that saw Danny's 6.05/230.41 drop Dick's 6.07/231. But a 6.08/230.17 in the semifinal lost to Cheeseman's 6.02/231. Danny qualified #7 at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals with a 6.05/232.01. An opening round 6.08/229.53 advanced when Gary Rettell fouled and in the second round, Mike Andreotti also fouled against him. This time, Danny coasted through at 23.55/61.86. He ran his best of the weekend, a 6.03/231.12 in the semifinals, but it wasn't enough to beat Pat Austin's similar 6.03/231. |

Notes: Jim had a great year, running 5.40s everywhere. Jim qualified #9 with a 5.419/267.22 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he blew a motor and slowed to a 10.04/75.33, losing to R.C. Sherman's 5.49/271. He was at the NHRA Arizona Nationals two weeks later, qualifying #13 with a 5.49/247.66. He lost to Glenn Mikres in the first round. He did not go to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It was his first time back at the NHRA Gatornationals after seven years. His 5.46/255.24 qualified #6. He smoked the tires in the first round, but his 6.39/235.78 still beat Al Hofmann's troubled 13.43/54. Dunn lost to K.C. Spurlock in round two. Best NHRA times from the World Finals, 5.415/272.14.
