Notes: Photo from 1990 Norwalk. Listed times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 4, Fall 1990 issue. Fred's first national event in '90 was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He failed to qualify, but got into the show when Bob Strauss broke. A 5.64/248.80 beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein in the first round, but in round two, he lost to the event's eventual winner Richard Holcomb. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, qualifying was not a problem as only eight-cars showed for the eight-car field. Farndon ran 5.89/246.71 for the #8 spot. He lost to Paul Smith driving Chuck Etchells' car in the first round. | At the Tosti Asti Spumonte IHRA Gateway Nationals, Farndon ran 5.636/254.89 but unfortunately was only good for first Alternate. At the IHRA Tosti Asti Spumonte IHRA Empire Nationals, only 8 Top Fuelers showed up & Farndon qualified #7 with a 5.736/188.58 & Faced #2 Qualifier John Carey in round 1 where Farndon exploded a supercharger & watched Carey drive away to the round 1 victory. At the IHRA Eastern Nationals in Atco Farndon qualified #5 with a 5.387/272.28 & in round 1 Faced #4 qualifier Michael Brotherton, Farndon however double stepped off the line before the light turned green to get a red light & hand the win to the eventual event champion Brotherton. |

Winter 89/90 has 284.81. | Frank started the year by qualifying #7 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.11/283.28. A first-round 5.53/270.10 beat Ed Moore. In the second round, Frank's 5.12/279.76 beat Connie Kalitta. He lost to Frank Bradley in the semifinal. At the Supernationals in March, he lasted until the semi finals before losing to Joe Amato. The team failed to qualify at the Gatornationals where a best of 5.31/280.93 was good for the fifth alternate. They rebounded by making the show in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.26/267.85 qualified #13 and an improved 5.15/278.12 beat Gene Snow in the first round. Frank slipped to a 5.47/236.53 in round two that lost to Dick LaHaie's 5.16/278. Then they went to Memphis for the Mid South Nationals where they again failed to qualify. At Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals, Frank qualified the car #10 with a 5.25/279.76. He picked up to a 5.14/280 in the first round, to beat Gary Ormsby. He had a close second round race with Lori Johns that he won with a 5.33 to her 5.34. In the semifinals, Darrell Gwynn smoked the tire against him and his 5.36/274 took him into the final. Frank lost to Snow in the final, but it was the team's first final round appearance of the season. Yet at the next event, the Springnationals, a best of 5.24/281.69 left them outside (first alternate) the field again. |

Notes: Lori won NHRA Pomona and Atlanta this year. She became the 12th member of the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel on February 17, 1990, with a 4.975 at NHRA Phoenix. Lori qualified #6 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 5.04/273.05. A 5.09/268.01 beat Chris Karamesines' 5.16/268 in round one, but a 5.11/272.14 in round two lost to Dick Lahaie's 5.06/274. The next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. This was not a good event for her as, during qualifying, she had the engine blow. The block actually split in two and damaged the chassis. Her ET on the pass was 11.57/48.89, which obviously failed to qualify. After that race, she sat third in the points behind Joe Amato and Gary Ormsby. Her team had to hustle to get a car together for Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals held just one week later(July 29). Lahaie came to the rescue as he had a chassis on the jig at Dave Uyehara's shop, and he let Johns take it. Uyehara welded the two frames together to have a car for the race. During qualifying, her times kept improving. Lori's first pass was 5.16, which was followed by a 5.14. After going backward with a 5.17, she stepped up to a 5.08/264.62 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, after all that work, her tire-smoking 6.82/125.29 lost to Robert Reehl's 5.26/272 in the opening round. With the loss, she dropped back to fourth in the points. She took another early loss at the NHRA Northwest Nationals. After qualifying #7, Lori's 5.12/268.65 fell to LaHaie's 5.09/281 in round one. Brainerd was slightly better for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. A 5.10/264.08 qualified #5. She faced Shirley Muldowney in the first round, and her 5.21/263.88 defeated Muldowney's 5.30/264. Another 5.21 at 263.85 in round two lost to Ormsby's 5.04/281. Her best NHRA national event times were at Ennis and Houston, 4.950/279.32. Photo from 1990 Grandnationals, Montreal. |
