Notes: Dick ran a career-best of 5.94 (to this point) at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove in August. The run was made in the semifinals while losing to Bob Hilton's slower 5.95. Allard's speed on the run was 217.39. On August 9, he flipped the car while attempting to qualify at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He was OK. He ended up as the third alternate with a 6.98. That was Dick's only national event this year. Photo from 1979 US Nationals. Formerly listed 5.89/243.90 for this year, but that may have been a miscommunication of the 5.919/243.90 Summernationals DNQ from 1981. Removing those times until we can validate. |

Notes: Jeb qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 5.918 (speed unavailable), but he broke against Gary Ormsby in the first round. He qualified #6 at Baton Rouge at 6.00/243.47 but lost to Jeg Coughlin in round one, 6.08/243 to 6.17/234.37. Allen was having a bit of a rough time with his combination near the end of the season. Jeb qualified #14 at Columbus at 6.06/235.60. In round one, he beat Gary Beck, 6.389/222.22 to 6.48/238, but lost to Johnny Abbott in round two, 6.00/234 to 6.254/218.97. Jeb rebounded at Englishtown with a win at the Summernationals. He qualified #8 at 5.968/225.56 and beat Bobby Hilton in round one, 6.13/230.17 to 9.81. IN round two, he again took out Gary Beck, 5.96/231.36 to 10.03/63. Jeb defeated Bruce Hagestad in the semis, 6.06/231.95 to 6.22/219. Dave Settles had a bit of a performance advantage in each round, but he broke in the final, and Jeb took a 6.17/227.84 victory. But right after that, he was the first alternate at the Sanair Grandnationals (times unavailable but #8 was a 6.13). He barely qualified for the 32 car field at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. During Thursday's qualifying, he ran 6.12. A pair of 6.17s later backed that up. A last-ditch attempt to make the show came Sunday morning, where his 6.011/235.60 got him the #30 spot. In the opening round of eliminations, he improved to 5.922/237.46 to beat Connie Kalitta's 6.06/212. It was Jeb's first five-second pass since July. Gary Beck had to shut off against him in round two due to tire shake, and Allen advanced with a 6.066/234.98. In the third round, his 6.023/240.00 got around Dave Uyehara, whose car broke at half-track, slowing to 6.30/174. Jeb slowed to 6.201/223.32 in the semifinal and lost to Johnny Abbott's 5.99/241. He then failed to qualify at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals (6.039/234.98 first alternate) and Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals (sixth alternate, times unavailable but #16 was 6.21). Did Jeb run 5.90 somewhere? Photo from 1979. |

Notes: Dennis was the second alternate at the Pomona Winters at 6.055 (speed unavailable). Baca was the third alternate at the US Nationals with a 6.04/230 best. After failing to qualify at Indy, Baca went to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, where his 6.01/233.16 qualified #15. Unfortunately, he blew his engine on the run and stayed up all night, replacing it with a new one. While warming up that engine, it also let go, and the third alternate, Dwight Salisbury, replaced him in the show. In October, he went to the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway, but he failed to qualify there (times unavailable). Photo from Indy 1979. |

Notes: Second team car. This car was not listed in Jim Hawkins' DragStats in 1993. Did it run in IHRA exclusively? Photo from 1993 IHRA Atco NJ. Former Amato streamliner. |Wayne attempted to qualify at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals in June, but his best of 5.50/265.01 left him as the third alternate. In late August he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals where he qualified on the "bump spot" of the eight-car field with a 5.44/251.25. He lost to low qualifier Mike Dunn's 5.18/269 with a tire smoking 7.02/121.32. The following week (September 6), Wayne was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. He ended up as the ninth alternate with a best of 5.51/247.04. He had some bad luck at the IHRA North American Nationals on September 12 when he could only coax a 13.63/49.65 out of the car. He ended up as the third alternate. |

Notes: Beck had a rough season in '77. The season started at the PRO race at Beeline on January 14. Beck ran 6.28/204.54 in Friday's qualifying, but that is all the info we have from that race. He ran at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals on January 23. Gary qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.55. He improved to a first-round 6.38/203.60 to beat Arley Langlo, but in round two, his 6.52 lost to Ron Attebury's 6.44. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his best of 6.140/219.51 failed to qualify, and he failed to make the field at the Gatornationals as well at 6.320. He ran better at the Edgewater Division 3 race, qualifying #2 with a 6.09/205.46, but he failed to make it to the finals. He qualified #3 for the eight-car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at 6.265/206.89, but in the first round, his 6.38/225.00 lost to Pat Dakin's 6.20/231. At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #8 in the eight-car field with a 6.82/165.14. He picked up to a 6.47/223.89 in the first round to beat Attebury's 6.54/208. A 6.39/213.28 beat Ron Collins' Chevy-powered car in the semifinal. In the final, he met Jeb Allen, and despite running a 6.42/230.18, he lost to Jeb's 6.34/229. Gary experienced a violent engine explosion during qualifying for the NHRA Springnationals. The car caught fire, but Gary brought it to a safe stop. He was OK. He qualified #7 with a 6.078/215.82, but a first-round 6.32 lost to Paul Longenecker's 6.22. He managed to get into another final round at the third Division 3 race at US 131, Martin, Mich. He qualified #2 with a 6.13/217.39 and beat Larry Brown in the first round with a 6.22/229.59. He blew another engine in the semifinals, but his 6.13/227.84 still beat Sid Seeley's 6.18/202. A new motor was installed for the final with Shirley Muldowney, and it performed, running 6.26/213.77. But this was Shirley's race, and she won with a 6.06/240 (Top Speed). One of the few bright spots in the year came at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals on July 3. Beck qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.44. In the first round, a 6.64 beat Doug Mead's 7.14. In round two, he lost to Frank Bradley, but Frank blew his engine while winning, and Beck got back in on the "break rule." So, in the final, he faced Jimmy Edwards. Edwards lost a blower belt, and Gary drove to a 6.62/197 victory. At Englishtown the following week (July 10), Beck had difficulty qualifying. He finally made the show on the "bump spot" with a 6.200/226.70 but lost to Lee Weller in the first round. Things seemed to be taking a turn at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals at the end of July. The team towed in and qualified #1 with a 6.12/236.22. He recorded a 5.98/243.90 in the first round to beat Longenecker's 6.53/185. In the semifinals, he set track records of 5.91/245.90 over Dick LaHaie's 6.33/198. The track ET record going into this race was a 6.01 by Don Garlits. Unfortunately, in the final, he slowed to a 6.15/244.56, losing to Bradley's 6.09/243. The next event on his calendar was the NHRA Grandnationals. There, he qualified #2 with a 6.070/236.22 and, in round one, beat Jeg Coughlin with a 6.14/224.43. In the semifinals (eight-car show), he lost to Dakin's 6.10/234 with a 6.17/233. Gary competed at the PHR Championships at US 131, lasting until the semifinals. He scored wins over Allen and Paul Romine with times of 5.97 and 5.96 before the engine came up ailing in the semis, and his 6.93 lost to eventual winner Johnny Abbott's 6.59. He got another victory on August 21 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He set Low ET at 6.05 and, in the final, beat Allen for the title with a 6.24/227. Gary qualified #6 at Indy Nationals with a 5.962/236.84, but lost to James Warren in round one, with a shut off 7.33. He did not qualify at Seattle, running 6.12/229. Gary was said to have run a 5.99/199 motor-blowing run at the Ontario World Finals, but he does not appear on the NHRA qualifying sheets. |

Notes: Mike did not race at the first two NHRA events of the season but was at Houston for the Supernationals. His 5.01/277.69 qualified #8. The supercharger exploded in the opening round of eliminations, and his opponent, Gene Snow, advanced with an ailing 26.46. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #6 with a 5.11/275.48. An off-pace 5.72/231.00 lost to Ken Koretsky's 5.30/230 in the opening round. He did not compete at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.03/275.73 qualified #5. The first round continued to give Mike problems as his 9.40-84.05 fell to Don Prudhomme's troubled 6.88/139. Only 15 cars showed up at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Mike ran a 5.0 to qualify #6. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to the race's eventual winner, Lori Johns. Baton Rouge saw Brotherton finally advance past the first round. Although his 5.34 only qualified #14 for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he got past a wheelstanding Johns. In round two, he dropped Shirley Muldowney with a 5.26/277. In the semifinal, his 5.32 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.23. He then made a stop at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. This was an eight-car show, and he ran 5.40/263.01 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. An opening round 5.44/255.27 defeated Tommy Johnson Jr., but he overpowered the track in round two and smoked the tires against Jack Ostrander. Mike went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he ran 5.48/269.86 during qualifying the first weekend (June 10). The race was postponed due to rain, and he chose to race at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals the following weekend instead of racing at Columbus, which was scheduled for the same date (June 17). At St. Louis, he set a track record 5.27 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. His speed on the run was 269.84. He then reset the track speed record to 271.19. Mike had an easy path into the final as first Randy Meyer broke against him, and then Ostrander was unable to back up from his burnout when his reverser failed in the semifinal. Mike ran a solo to reach the final. He faced #2 qualifier Richard Holcomb, and the two had a great race that saw Mike's 5.36/264.44 win over Richard's 5.42/257. Times confirmed for 1990 by Jim Hawkins DragStats. Mike duplicated is 282.04 at Ennis Fall. Did Mike also win IHRA Palm Beach? Photo from 1990 Norwalk. |

Notes: Photo from 1979 US Nationals. Rob qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.92/243.90. He lost to low qualifier Connie Kalitta in the first round, when he fouled. He qualified #2 at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race with a 5.88/243.90. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Noel Reese. He did much better at the second Division 6 race at Seattle on May 4. He beat Wayne Warner and Ernie Hall with times of 5.97 and 6.07 at 241.93 to advance to the final. In the final, he faced Jerry Ruth. Jerry ran 6.08 in the final, but he lost to Rob's 5.98/242.58 (Top Speed). |

Notes: ET confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats, but Jim only lists 257.28 mph for Russ this year. Where was the 281.25 mph run (perhaps on a DNQ)? Photo from 1992 Winternationals. | Russ was first alternate at the NHRA Winternationals when his best of 5.10/267.53 failed to make the cut. |

Notes: Hank was at Columbus in the middle of June for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.16/233.94 qualified #14, and in round one, he improved to 6.04/231.00. Unfortunately, Darrell Gwynn was running 5.68/247 in the next lane. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but his 5.85/244.69 best was only good enough for the second alternate. Hank qualified on the "bump" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he lost to Joe Amato in the opening round. The team did not make the trip to Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, nor did they go to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. When Hank pulled into Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he had not run in the 5.70s since the '84 Gatornationals. But on Thursday, he ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.740 at 246.71 to lead qualifying. The engine burned one piston on the run, and it held for the low qualifying time for about 15 minutes. Endres came out to make a second run, but a broken crank seal caused an oil leak, and he was shut down on the line. The next run came with a dropped valve seat, but it still ran 5.82/227.38. Since the team was not racing for points, car owner John Carey wanted to try Sid Waterman's new injector and pump. So on Sunday, with Sid helping and the new pieces in place, the car smoked the tires to 6.15/221.13. Hank's earlier 5.74 held for the #13 spot in the field. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.89/229.24 lost to Gene Snow's 5.65/247. He still had the new pump and injector on for the run. Things didn't go so well at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Thirteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, and after losing a blower while trying to make the show, Hank ended up as the sixth alternate with a 6.14/192.30 best. The Indy times were Hank's best of the year. |
